(Original Air Date: 04/09/08) “Fat slob!” “Lardo!” “Lazy butt!” Obese people are often the target of ridicule, but can you imagine hearing this type of verbal abuse from your own spouse? Dr. Phil takes on fat abusers, people who intentionally belittle their husband or wife simply for being overweight. Roger says he was very clear when he told his wife, Linda, before they were married that he couldn’t stand fat people. Now 20 years later, Roger says Linda has gained 40 pounds and is about to lose him. He says sex with her is like “rolling around in a bowl of Jell-O” and is considering divorce if she doesn’t shed the pounds. Should Linda take his behavior as a wake-up call and end the marriage? Then, Alisa and Leon have been married for 28 years, but now that he tips the scales at 305 pounds, she calls him “Fat Butt.” She filed for divorce because she says she can’t stand looking at his stinky, flabby body. Their daughter, Amy, also puts Leon down and says he's the reason that she’s full-figured. Don't miss Dr. Phil's surprise for Leon! And, viewers were left speechless by Rick, who called his wife, Karen, a fat whore, fat pig and even the C-word. Has he changed his abusive ways? Join the discussion.

Bullies...

Quote From: yoshiyoshi

Or maybe they're not attracted to "healthy" people, aka people who are thin. Because they were allowed to be bullied by them in school, and be talked down to by them because they weren't "healthy"..I mean thin, like them.

Why would you want to associate with people who have proven to be cruel in the past?

The "healthy" bullies aren't that healthy.  They probably have a boatload of emotional issues that they want to unload on the "fat" kid because they can't cope with all their problems.  They're not healthy either, but in a different way (psychologically), because mentally healthy people don't bully.

Gross?

Quote From: rainpainrain

Every single obese person I have EVER met in my ENTIRE life will not lose weight by simply getting a nutritionist or a gym pass. I do understand your point and you are VERY compassionate, and as a gross obese person, I thank you.

But every single obese person I know is suffering from hurt. They think very little of themselves. They think they are dirt, worse than dirt. Hurting themselves becomes second nature. Eating becomes addictive because you get a chemical rush from it.

Until those issues are dealt with a gym and nutritionist are like putting a band-aide on a gaping wound.

and as a gross obese person, I thank you.

I think you're being a bit hard on yourself.  I know that you're dealing with a lot of hurt from your past, but I don't think obese people are gross or worthless, but there's a reason they are the way they are.  Self talk is SO hard to control, I still struggle with mine on a daily basis.  Through talking to you, I can tell that youre an intelligent, pragmatic, interesting poster, and I can tell you love your family.  You have all those wonderful attributes that are worth more than just your weight.

Surprised at Dr. Phil!

Quote From: lost1234

I get so mad at fat abusers. I am married to one. I haven't been fat until i injured a back injury 3 years ago and then had a brother whom commited suicide. I have put on 100 pounds plus and now am struggling to loose the weight. It is very hard and when stupid people call us fat slobs and other mean and cruel names, it just makes it worse. I know from experience. My husband used to be ignorant in this department, until i almost died, due to complications of pneumonia. People can change, as he has. He said he never knew why he said those things, but that he regrets every word ever issued in ignorance. I am slowly loosing the weight and i feel very sorry for people who are made fun of. It hurts and can really traumatize someone in ways a person could never know. I hope that these people can learn that fat people are not bad, nor are they slobs. Some people do not try to loose the weight, but in some cases such as mine alot of it was due to meds and bed rest for a long time and then depression sank in. I honestly didin't know i had gotten so big until i finally looked in a mirror and was shocked and sick with myself for letting it get this far. I was always skinny. So beleive me it hurts. I have indured insults in public places and in front of my kids. People need to learn to keep their mean comments to themselves. If you don't like the way a person looks, don't look. and if you cannot love them anymore, do not threaten to leave just leave as  you aren't helping threm in any way and they would probably do better without you anyway. I  hope dr. phil gets people on this show to see  how dumb they can really be....

I was shocked that Dr. Phil didn't offer the first woman on the show some counseling!!!  And that @#$%@ of a husband of hers - who'd want him!???   Wow,...  they call that love!?  No thanks!

She truely has self esteem issues, and very low self worth to continue living with a man who continues to be mean and cruel to her... He needs a kick in the ass.... and she needs to file for divorce... that is not a healthy loving relationship!!   So he says he's sorry,.,.. right.   He's still a mean spirited, selfish man.  I say  kick him to the curb and don't look back.

I realize that....

Quote From: rainpainrain

Well, as your Dr said, your metabolism is very slow...but there is no way that fat just generates out of nothing. Fat is a substance, it's made out of the things we eat. It doesn't appear out of no where, that is scientifically impossible.

My point is that overeating is not the only cause of extra weight, if that were the case, I would still weigh 103 lbs! My body takes the little fat it gets and hoards it. It's not because I eat too much of it. It's because I don't eat enough of ANYTHING.

I would like to add...

Quote From: yoshiyoshi

This is what I'm talking about. It's not your fault Peterspumpkin. Our bodys are naturally set to be at a setpoint weight, yours happens to be 170. You also mentioned you had to eat 5 ritz crackers every three days for a month to loose the weight.

Show of hands, does that sound like healthy eating to anyone, hmm? For all of you people out there who think you don't have to starve to loose weight, this is proof that you do. You cannot force yourself thin, that is reality. We're all built differently, with different genes, and that's what makes life beautiful. Despite those who want everyone to be the same.

As soon as I went back to my regular one meal a day, the weight came back and I am right where I was before the ritz crackers diet. My body apparently likes 170. It's happy here. I'm not happy but it apparently is!

SS Officer?

The mean 1st husband on the show was so cold and emotionless.  He reminded me of an SS officer.  I could picture him with the hat, uniform, skull and crossbones...
Maybe he should get an agent out there in LA.  Who knows maybe that will be Mel Gibson's next project.

Gwarrior I totally agree with you on this.  Bullies are not psychologically healthy people.  They do have their own issues, and they find a target to direct their attention on because they think that by bringing someone else down that they somehow look better.  If I think back upon kids who bullied me during childhood, I can now objectively see the issues that they were trying to cover up...which I totaly did NOT see while the bullying was happening so many years ago.  Instead, I was wondering what was wrong with me!!!  Now I see it for what it was.  Levelling, as Dr. Phil calls it.  trying to bring someone else down to make themselves appear better.  Well, guess what?  They Do Not look better.  They look like the bullies that they are.

THEY FEEL BETRAYED DUE TO THE FAT!

I am a woman, 51 years old, and personally, I don't blame that husband one bit for not wanting to  sleep with his wife who is 170 lbs, when she was 130 lbs when she married him.  He married a slim woman, and he TOLD HER AHEAD OF TIME that he didn't like fat women.  And she gained 50 LBS.  That's a lot of weight.  I do not agree with the name-calling.  But I can understand how he would say having sex with her is like diving into Jello (or whatever he said).

Now, the woman who married a thin man (gorgeous in the photo!), and is now married to a 300+Lb tub of lard, with a dangling belly apron...FORGET IT, I would NEVER SLEEP WITH THAT THING, and I don't blame her AT ALL for not sleeping with him and for telling him that he looks fat...HE IS FAT, and compared to his old photo, now he really does look horrible.  If the man I married at 150Lbs suddenly grew to 180, or 200Lbs...I would be friends with him (maybe)...but I wouldn' t sleep with him, becaue it would make me sick to see the dangling belly thing.  I am with her.  If I was her (AND HE FARTS AND BURPS IN PUBLIC, AND IS OBESE ALONG WITH THAT???) -- If I was her, I would've ditched him with the first fart...and that probably happended long before he gained all the weight.
