Last week police conducted a stunning raid which resulted in hundreds of women and children being removed from a polygamist compound in Eldorado, Texas. On this 1,700-acre ranch, formerly led by Warren Jeffs of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, children were allegedly sexually abused by older men, and girls as young as 14 allegedly had babies. Dr. Phil goes on location in Colorado City, where he first covered this sect three years ago and where some members of the religious group still live. For the next two days, he explores the psychological ramifications of children being taken from the only lifestyle they knew. Then, Eldorado townspeople weigh in on this unfolding drama. Helen, a volunteer, says she was shocked to see such young girls pregnant and married, and she shows the Dr. Phil cameras what life was like for these kids immediately after they were removed from the compound. Plus, Dr. Phil talks to Warren Jeffs’ niece, Naomi, who escaped from this bizarre religious sect at age 13. His cameras stayed with her every step of the way as she tried to get past police check points, desperate to find the sisters she left behind 16 years ago. And, Naomi meets another woman who escaped the FLDS religious group, Carolyn Jessop, who was married to the second-in-command at Warren Jeffs’ organization and had eight children with him while she says she was trapped inside this sect. Find out the devastating news Carolyn shares with Naomi. Will Naomi’s search finally reunite her with the family she left behind? Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

04/22 Secrets inside the Compound

The current legal age of consent in Canada is 14.   I was curious and thought I'd check.   I was shocked and sickend!!
I think, to some degree, the lowered ages are indicative of a government not wanting to prosecute TWO minors having sex with each other. Many states, and perhaps Canada, have stipulations that the other partner cannot be more than 2 or 3 years older.  We don't want 25 year olds having sex with 16 year olds, but do we really want to criminalize and prosecute a 17 year old having sex with a 16 year old.

you are absolutely right
I agree that FLDS and LDS are totally different as i have family members in the LDS! I think  Dr. Phil (stupidly, no offense drphil) assumed that his viewers know the difference.  He should not have assumed it and explained that at the onset of the show.

That's dumb....

The age of consent for Utah is 16 for boys and 18 for girls. I got this from avert.org and two other websites whose names escape me.

Split ages?  Come on now, Utah!  So who's the 16 yo boy supposed to have sex with?  An 18 yo girl?  How does that work?  When I was 18, I was all about the college dudes.  Maybe he's supposed to find himself a cougar?  Yucky!  :p

I don't know I thought the age of consent in Utah was 16  I'll have to see if I can check on that.  Part of the trouble in prosecuting is this group keeps to themselves so who knows if a girl is "married" or not?  Unless there is a complaint to investigate nothing can be done.  If asked they don't answer, plus some don't have birth certificates so there is no record of their age.  One Utah polygamist, Tom Green was prosecuted because he spoke out instead of keeping quiet and they could prove that one of his wives was under age when she became pregnant with his child.  He was sent to prison.

please do check it out, I'm thinking in the Warren Jeffs, it was stated that 14 was the legal age, the girl in that case is now over 21 so it would of been a few years ago, could of changed.

CPS took it oo far.  I happen to know some of these stories are fabricated.  I do not support child abuse, but I wish people would check the facts.  I'm tired of seeing bitter people get on national television and make accusations that nobody ever verifies. It destroys lives!  There are good poeple living polygamy.  They shouldn't all be made out to be such monsters because of a few bad apples.
It is not a few bad apples.  It is a systemic issue that needs to be addressed.  There is plenty of statistical information on this issue.

Polygamy is against the LAW.

And isn't it against the law of common sense.

This is a sect that allows the abuse of women and children.

This is a sect , a cult that allows SEXUAL ABUSE OF CHILDREN, and the mothers and everyone else looks the other way.

CPS DID NOT TAKE THIS TOO FAR.    They need to protect the children.

The men in this cult hide behind the women's skirts....yet  some of the women  are actually possible  victims from birth themselves.

They were offered safe shelter with their children yet they returned to the sect's compound.  Very few women sought shelter with the kids.

NOW THE WOMEN ARE TO HAVE THEIR DNA TESTED AND THEY'RE REFUSING TO DO SO,

THEY WANT THEIR CHILDREN BACK BUT REFUSE NOW TO CO-OPERATE AS THEY ORIGINALLY SAID THEY WOULD IN ORDER TO GET THEIR CHILDREN BACK.

DO YOU KNOW WHY THAT IS?

And WHEN WILL THESE POLYGAMISTS THAT ARE "BLEEDING THE BEAST"  (AS THEY PUT IT, & CONDONE)  When will these polygamists stop bleeding us the US TAXPAYERS  and our government of all the $$$ and support  they collect each and every month for themselves and all those children???

THEY CLAIM TO BE UNWED MOTHERS WITH DEPENDENT CHILDREN.

The men then confiscate the $$$.

04/22 Secrets inside the Compound

Even in the fabric dept at our local  hardware store, you see the "pecking order" of the FLDS wives.  First wife gets to pick whatever ($$) fabric she wants...bottom wife obediently picks fabric off the $1a yard bargain table. I have on several occasions watched the first wife (when the men are not around) get down right irritated and snippy with lesser wives... hence the "wave the wedding ring"  happens. Despite what they may tell you, it is simply human nature to occasionally get jealous and prideful... yes, there is a pecking order. Although the women, themselves may not even be aware of it.
The hair thing I'm not sure of, but I know that in the 90's - when the hair style was to swoop it up and back - I wore my front hair flat, no big "swoop" for me!

Oh and by the way,  Joseph Smith DID NOT outlaw polygamy......when Utah wished to enter the Union in 1896, they were denied admittance until polygamy was outlawed. That's when the FLDS was formed...separate from the LDS church (which outlawed polygamy), please don't confuse the two, they do not ever, EVER intersect.
Today's LDS church members despise the thought of polygamy.
If you have the opportunity to read it, I have a book named "A Mormon Mother", an autobiography by Annie Clark Tanner. It is copied from Annie's journals and published by her descendants to explain what happened when  the LDS church outlawed polygamy. A pretty good and insightful read.

Good point on the reasons for outlawing of polygamy.  However, the polygamy DOES intesect when a husband might be a widower and get sealed to another woman, yet the women can never be sealed to more than one man.  This is a fundamental similarity that can not be overlooked.

04/22 Secrets inside the Compound

Amen! When will we wake up and protect our rights?
Your rights are protected, but the children of the FLDS are not (until Texas stepped in).  As a matter of fact, the only people with rights are the men calling the shots.  This is not about an idiological arguement, it is about abuse.  It IS very similar to other fundamentalist terrorist groups.
