(Original Air Date: 04/28/08) Imagine being forced to dwell in a space that is so cluttered with junk, food and trash, you can barely walk. Nancy and her boyfriend, Bob, live this nightmare every day. In their two homes, flies and plastic containers fill the kitchen, moldy food is stuffed in four refrigerators, and boxes and plastic bags litter the house. The two youngest children sleep on the same couch in the living room, because one's bedroom is cluttered, and the other child doesn't even have a bedroom! Nancy, a former nurse, admits to being an extreme hoarder, but how did she and Bob, a former corporate attorney, allow their lives to degenerate to this chaotic clutter? Their home is trashed, and they're in debt $100,000. Could other issues be contributing to the chaos in the house as well? Hear from the three children, 16, 11 and 9, who are trapped in this mess. Are Nancy and Bob finally ready to rescue their family from the rubble before the kids' lives are ruined forever? Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

07/01 A Secret Inside: Extreme Hoarding

Quote From: BrianX29

When it comes to hoarding. Obviously the junk just doesn't pile up by itself. Someones gotta clean it up.........
In some ways, my MIL's house is even worse than theirs. Such as dog turds on top of clothes. And a bathtub used as a storage bin. She doesn't stink yet. Guess she's been giving herself "sponge" baths. She's in no shape to clean up all that mess, almost 80 with a painful hip and bad knees, but my SIL says she'll probably shoot anyone who else who tries. Got a gun on her dining room table, buried under a mountain of clutter. My husband is thinking of taking her to Savannah for a few days while while my two BIL's and three SIL's tackle the house. I'll probably man the decontamination station! They'll need it after handling all that crap!

I am aware

I have to disagree with you about the hoarding being a symptom of alcoholism and opiates. If they both were "clean" from their alcohol and drug addictions tomorrow the issue with the hoarding wouldn't just go away. That is a whole different problem that needs to be dealt with. The wife may have OCD but I also want to state that not all people with OCD are hoarders, in fact, many of them are extremely clean. Not that you brought that up but plenty of others did.

Yes I agree with you hoarding and OCD are not symptoms of  alcohol/drug addiction.   However, any

addiction in the way will hamper any attempt at getting help  with OCD.

I may not have articulated this.

Of course the majority of peeps with OCD related conditions are not alcoholics/addicts I also have two friends unfortunately with different degrees of it.

Nevertheless, what this couple presented on the tele,  was alcoholic and drug abuse behavior which needs to be addressed along with the OCD.

Hoarders? Ok mate...

Mate, Personally i dont think this counts as hoarding. Ok i am a hoarder. I think this means that i keep shoe boxes because they might come in handy, notes from my mates cause they make me smile and sticks off the ground because i think that if i need a new perch for my birds i could use them. But my room is as neat as anything even though i dont chuck anything out! I dont think that a room being so messy those kids cant sleep in there, mouldy food in the kitchen and all that other rubbish is 'hoarding'. Maybe the word means something different to you guys but to me, strewth i think that these people are just kinda slobs(no offence haha).

"Hoarding" is the term that has come to be used to describe the folks on the show. I think what you do is probably called something else. I do it to a certain extent myself. But, we are not hoarders as the word has come to be used. "Hoarding" is a bad thing these days.

Hoarding and pack rats

I totally agree with your show today.  I am not a hoarder or pack rat but I've had to help 2 friends to have garage sales and estate sales but once they saw the money coming in they got excited.  Then they started bringing out more stuff to sell.  The last time  I moved I sold my car, computer and gave away all my extra dishes and cristal and stuff I never used to a younger girl who wanted "nice" stuff.  .   And I haven't missed one single thing.   I kept a few little things of mom's and picutres of dad and mom and the rest I don't miss.  I agree with you.  Clutter is just "stuff."  And it's not worth keeping.

I consider myself a hoarder -and my place is a mess a lot of the time -this is beyond that. I think the difference is that although I have emotional attachments to things there comes a point when things get chucked out. I have heard of people hoarding food -it is apparently fairly common when people have gone thorugh long periods of semistarvation. This is just sick though, what bothers me the most is the rotten food and poo. My son poos on the floor sometimes (he is disabled). After making him dispose of it in the toilet we clean the carpet together. He'll get it eventually. I can't understand someone leaving 7 cats to poo through their house. I am suprised they haven't got sick

Any Followup?

It has been a few months since this show originally was taped. Any follow up? Is the Mother to the point where she will accept help getting rid of the trash, junk and filth? Is she working to get her nursing license back? Do the kids have habitable rooms?

I feel Nancy's pain

My mom has been a hoarder for as long as I can remember, and it is true that they are unreasonable when it comes to this. But I do not believe it is intentional, anytime we brought up the house when we were younger her face would always deflate like she felt like she was being lectured. I could tell it is hard for her, like something clicks inside and an overwhelming waterfall gushes over her. My mom lost her house last year because of her hoarding, and lack of paying the house payment, she had just lost her job six months before, and no one would hire her because her car was broken and the closest place you can work in my town is 14 miles away both ways, she began to start drinking more heavy. And my younger brother got taken away from her and put in a house where they did not treat their own children any better. My mom got an apartment in a town 7 miles away, and recently got a DUI and is being evicted because of her hoarding and a recent fire. I wish I could help her but it so hard when I live over 2500 miles away, and when I see Nancy's story it just brings up so many old memories....my mom didn't have two houses full of junk but she did have 3 full sized storage units and a double wide full of stuff.

I hope Nancy's life and my mother's get better. Hoarding is a very stressful thing not just on the hoarders but the people who want to help but doesn't know how. I feel for her, and her children and I think she is doing a great job. And I think if she keeps it up she is on her way to a better life.

Not easy to see your faults

So easy for others to say what you should do and see your faults but it is harder to see them yourself . When you do it usually too late. I know I am a hoarder now but never realized it till I saw it on Oprah show. I kept saying I could take care of it myself. My health has gone down ........now with the Economy I
have watched my income go way down.. Fight to keep my house and bills paid....... I want to just run and hide but because of my animals and people I care about ......cant leave them in a rut.......
I wish I could find the light in the tunnel......... it is hard to try on your own
