(Original Air Date: 04/28/08) Imagine being forced to dwell in a space that is so cluttered with junk, food and trash, you can barely walk. Nancy and her boyfriend, Bob, live this nightmare every day. In their two homes, flies and plastic containers fill the kitchen, moldy food is stuffed in four refrigerators, and boxes and plastic bags litter the house. The two youngest children sleep on the same couch in the living room, because one's bedroom is cluttered, and the other child doesn't even have a bedroom! Nancy, a former nurse, admits to being an extreme hoarder, but how did she and Bob, a former corporate attorney, allow their lives to degenerate to this chaotic clutter? Their home is trashed, and they're in debt $100,000. Could other issues be contributing to the chaos in the house as well? Hear from the three children, 16, 11 and 9, who are trapped in this mess. Are Nancy and Bob finally ready to rescue their family from the rubble before the kids' lives are ruined forever? Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

There's no chance of this working...

Lowes wont fix the house until its empty they said. If it does get cleaned up and emptied, it would show she is trying, and that's all one can do, is try. she cant change the past, just the future.
...unless the woman gets intensive, long-term therapy and, likely, one or two medications. Just cleaning the house and fixing the kitchen will accomplish nothing. It will just put off the problem for a short time. It's like trying to bail out the ocean. The place will be full and filthy again as soon as she can manage it.

This woman is seriously ill. She's not just going to decide it's time to clean up her act and to demonstrate responsibility. She's incapable of that kind of reasoning. She may put on an act as if she's "trying" for a brief time, but that will be just part of the manipulation and sickness, allowing her to return to her current behavior. The idea of her trying is meaningless. She can't "try" to miraculously cure her own illness.  It would be like someone trying to cure their own cancer.

Those kids need to be separated from her immediately and until she gets the intensive help she needs -- and it works. Sad to say, it may well be incurable and the kids should stay away until they are adults and can take care of themselves. Dr. Phil should know this and not waste a second on getting her to "try."

Nancy's reality check.

Nancy: Your house is not cluttered -- it's filthy. Clutter is piles of old magaines and too many knick-knacks. Rotten food is garbage and animal waste is disease ridden filth. You have not had it worse than everyone else. None of us are as pretty now as we were at eighteen. Half of us are divorced. Many of us don't have the jobs we would like to have. You say you "have no life" when you have three healthy, beautiful children, good looks, good health, and a 3000 sq ft dream house. Show a little gratitude for these blessings and quit complaining. You are not the "sacrificing" mother you keep saying you are. You have a clean bed for yourself but you have not managed to give your little ones a clear space to sleep. It's a wonder their spines aren't curved. You have not given your children a safe sanitary place to live or clean healthy food. You obviously have found time to get your own hair done and shop for yourself, but where is the time spent on providing a clean safe wholesome place for your children to grow? I feel such pity for the sick "friend" whom you cared for by filling her home with clutter and then expected payment from. I realize that hoarders have a mental issue that needs therapy and understanding, but Nancy your constant self-pity and bragging about how much sacrificing you do for others was just too hard to take. You can only start to change if you quit denying your responsibility in all this.

Let's hope that the local cps workers have now visited the children in their home.  And removed them to a safer environment.
i think the woman dr phil asked a question to in the audence was from cps i could be wrong, but as for the cps workers having to visit that home dr phil saved them the trouble, he sent his staff in to film the house, i bet those poor souls would have rather went rattle snake hunting that day,

OK...SO YOUR PROPERTY VALUE MEANS MORE TO YOU THAN THESE PEOPLE? RIGHT? AND I GUESS YOU BELIEVE THAT SOMEONE WILL JUST ALL OF A SUDDEN JUMP AND SAY "YES" I NEED HELP...AND GO RUNNING TO THE NEAREST DOCTOR FOR HELP? IT DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY. LET SOMEONE COME INTO YOUR HOME AND START TAKING THINGS AWAY FROM YOU THAT YOU THINK ARE PRECIOUS...WHETHER THEY ARE OR NOT...MIGHT YOU GET UPSET? NO...EVERYTHING YOU HAVE IS WORTH SOMETHING...THEIR'S ISN'T. THEY HAVE A PROBLEM! THEY NEED HELP...AND UNTIL YOU REALIZE THAT...THERE'S NO HOPE FOR YOUR ATTITUDE. HEAVEN FORBID IF SOMEONE DEVALUES YOUR PROPERTY BECAUSE THEY'RE ILL.
i really dont think any doctor would go over and help clean her house nether, dr phils idea was better, that man from GOTJUNK.COM however will go get alot of that stuff out for  her, yeah its a good thing dr phil thinks like he does, that mess will get cleaned up now for sure. and the children will get a good nights sleep breathing fresh air. and have a kitchen table to eat on. i wouldnt worry that my property was being devalued if those people lived next door to me, but i would try to get them to clean up the smell a bit, i cant stand breathing foul air when im grilling out, even onions wont kill a smell like that.

Are you kidding me?

Honestly, It's funny how people come up with new words to replace what they really mean. Hording is just another example. Where I come from, this behavior is straight up being a slob and that's being nice!! There is no reason for having kids and animals live in that filth! After tuning in, I felt so filthy that I had to scrub up in the shower! These kids and animals should be taken away! We all have been through some traumas in our lives and we don't resort to this. I know if I were one of her kids, there would have been no way I'd show my face on national TV talking about my very nasty and unstable living conditions! Those poor kids! Reading some of your posts, I see that there are some people defending this and that is your right, but just remember that if you start in on me about being too harsh.

well i can tell you a medication that would get her off her ass and cleaning but dr phils mods cant allow its name posted, you cant get it from no doctor is why it cant be posted, but it would give her the energy she would need to get that mess cleaned up, hell i bet she could get it all cleaned in a day or two, BOTH houses, i was supprised at her being a nurse that she didnt think about it her self, as a nurse she should have known that pain pills make you want to sleep a lot, and im sure that drinking beer and popping those pills sis not help her at all.
