For years I was thin, after an overweight teen misery.  Gained some weight after a hysterectomy, but that came off and I was even thinner.  Then I had a spinal fusion, a hip replacement, and a knee replacement, and now my stomach makes me look like I am 9 months pregnamt.  There aren't a lot of exercises I can do anymore.  I would love to have some help getting this belly to disappear once more, as I always had a flat stomach, but this is ridiculous!

I couldn't even get on the Biggest Loser show because I have arthritis, high blood pressure, and asthma...so they are no help at all.  Of course, I couldn't do those things they have to do either...I am 70 years old, but still would love to go swimming again.

Thanks

Ladies,  My advise to you is to buy Dr. Phil's UWL book and the Dr. Phil food guide,  READ IT <READ IT AND READ IT AGAIN, THEN DO WHAT IT SAYS..   If you can't afford the book, at the top of the page there is a place called Dr. Phil's advise,  I believe there is a section on weight loss with lots of good information.  Then join one of the chat boards.  The one that I am on is call Miscellaneous; serious weight loss, no excuses.  There are only three or four of us on that board, but all are very supportive and I know there are more.  Just go and pick one  out to join.

I am 76 years old and I sure do know what it is all about.  I did manage to lose 100 pounds and it sure isn't easy to keep off.  I have gained some of it back, but am working on it,  to lose again.  I have about 20 or so more pounds to get back to my goal.  Before I started working on this weight my blood pressure was out of site and I was on three different B/P meds to control it.  Since I have lost the weight, my doctor has taken me off all but one a day.  IF I CAN DO IT ANYBODY CAN!!!  It took me a long time to make up my mind to get it off.  Just wish I had done it when I was younger.

I will say that exercise is very important.  I know there are exercises that you can do sitting in a chair.  Do anything that gets some movement, even if it is just walking around the house to start with.

Good luck and let me know how you are doing.  ; )

Hugs,

Dolores

Rebecca did not "allow" her daughter to show me disrespect nor does my granddaughter only want to associate with "the physically beautiful people."  I think it would be wise to ask for all the facts before making such broad sweeping statements about people one doesn't even know.  My granddaughter and I love one another very much.  She is loving, kind, generous, caring and very much a wonderful little girl.  I completely understand why my granddaughter is embarrassed and I feel badly that I have let myself get to the point where it is embarrassing for her or for anyone else.  I taught school for many, many years and I know what kids say to one another about all kinds of issues, including someone being fat.  I think her embarrassment stems from comments they make about me and she is too young to know how to respond in a way that saves face for her and defends me as well.  I know that this little girl has God's help in all aspects of her life and she is well-deserving of it.  Believe it or not, we are a loving supportive family and we genuinely care about one another. The fact that Rebecca and I have an issue over my weight and how to deal with it, does not take away from the love and respect we have as a family.  I am working on my weight and eating issues and Rebecca is working on letting me handle them by myself.  Everything is much better and I am on my way to a happier, healthier, more secure person.  I am embarrassed by the way I look and I want to do something about it for me and for all of  my family and friends.
Oh Lynn you are such an awesome and kind person.   I bet you're an awesome Grandma too.   I bet your grand daughter just worships you.   I totally get what you mean about kids and how they talk.  How incredibly kind of you to be so patient and understanding with all children, but I guess that's why you were a teacher.   I'm really pulling for you.

hi, this is Margie, I was one of the first 3 women on the show. First, I would like to say hi to Pam, Kay, Lin and Rebecca - it was GREAT seeing the show and remembering all of the fun we had that weekend! Secondly, I would like to say to anyone struggling with weight issues (and who isn't?) that you are WORTH taking care of and every step matters. Regarding exense, I didn't even BUY the Dr. Phil book at first, I checked it out at our library before purchasing. Then I bought a 5.00 jump rope and started jumping rope in my garage - I have NEVER been to the gym or worked with a trainer, nor do i spend money on pills, shakes, expensive "health food". It is very frustrating to me that whole, healthy, natural food costs 2-3 times more than junk food but I have come to accept it and make budgets. It is an effort to cook healthy, good food for a family on a budget, that is sure.

I would also like to say that the comments regarding Lin's granddaughter seem harsh to me. I have 2 daughters, ages 7 and 11 and BOTH girls and ALL of their friends have had the "fat" conversation with me, other moms and each other. It is our CULTURE that glamourizes beauty and these kids are surrounded by unreal images. From working with Lin these past few months I know that they are doing a great job focusing on health and strength rather than physical beauty. Anyone who thinks that only girls who are submerged in diet talk ask about being fat has not been around girls lately.

It was such a blessing to have this experience, but I would like everyone to know that Wendi, Kay and I all started out in the MOST unglamorous ways, walking our sweaty bootys up and down stairs, in garages and down empty streets. NOthing is glamorous or class centered when I am up at 5:30 in my basement sweating with billy blanks or we make healthy decisions as a habit. Pick up the Dr. Phil book, believe in yourself and start with the quizzes - we are ALL WORTH IT, putting ourselves first is not an option!! Best of luck to everyone!

Well said!  By the way you look amazing!
Hi, it's Pam again! I'm not sure which one of the three wrote that last letter, but "hi" again! It was fantastic to get to meet all the people on the show. You three are the most amazing women... the epitomy of what one can do if they are ready to make a change. It's so hard to lose weight because it's a habit and it's what we know how to do. I tell you, I panic if I think I'm going to miss one meal. .. food is just so damn important to me... it's my best friend. It's always around when I'm feeling crappy or mad or happy, whenever. What I've been trying to do lately, and because I have a fantastic relationship with Jesus, is ask Him to fill that void in my life, instead of the food. I know a lot of people won't agree w/ this, and that's ok. We're all entitled to our beliefs. As I mentioned before, I've been able to drop 90 lbs in the past 4 years on my own... w/o Dr. Phil or anyone else's help. I'm so blessed my health is intact still, because it woudn't have been for much longer. I was 250 and I gave the pix to Phil's staff to prove it, but they didn't show them. I didn't go on any special diet, I just did what I could and it took a long time, but all I know is I don't have to take HBP meds anymore.

we were so impressed by your honesty on the show and your willingness to talk about food urges and binging - that is what will really help people, when they see that a lot of people deal with the same difficult issues. my relationship with Jesus helps me through the rough days as well as the successful days, and knowing that God wants us to take care of our bodies helps me a lot, too.  margie

Grandma under threat of eviction!!!!!!!

I thought the mom who was pestering her mother-in-law about her weight was mean.  She threatened to evict her mother-in-law, if she didn't lose weight...how is that helpful?  What a terrible message to the younger child(ren) who might hear that threat:  lose weight or you are out of here...was that the arrangement when the mother-in-law was "allowed" to move in?  How awful!  That woman was self-centered and callous...I was furious with such disdain.  How about helping the woman by going for a walk with grandma in the evenings or by trying to find recipes with less sugar/salt... in them and having those for dinner?  Maybe Grandma is eating because she is lonely or bored?  Does she have friends and places to go?

I am Grandma and I do have plenty of friends and places to go.  When we moved in together it was a mutual understanding that if things got tense and weren't working out we would re-evaluate our situation and move from there.  It was getting pretty uncomfortable for Rebecca and me because we were butting heads about food and such, but with Dr. Phil's advice, we have resolved a lot of those issues.  The moving idea was not initiated because of my weight, but because of our conflict over how we were dealing with it.  I was a bit surprised when she said that, but when I took a step back and really looked at the situation, I agreed it was time.  But since we have addressed what was going on and have openly discussed everything, all is well.  We are all eating healthily and exercising and helping one another as much as we can.  My eating issues are deepseated and I am working on them.  Loneliness and boredom certainly are contributing factors.  I am determined to get the weight off and keep it off this time.  I am the one who has to deal with this and want it, not anyone else.  I WILL do it!

Oh, Please...I was totally flabbergasted that this lady had to come on nat'l. t.v. to say she only wore over-sized  tee-shirts to bed so her husband would'nt notice(?). And to be gifted with a trainer, stylist and a gift card! I think a towel ...to cry into...would have been more appropriate.

Hi Margie... thanks for the kind words. You guys are an inspiration to everyone out there. I read that you guys were going up and down stairs, walking down the streets, and doing Billy Blanks in your garage! How fantastic and motivating that is to people out there. I cannot afford a gym membership like a lot of people, so money cannot be used as an excuse not to be able to lose weight. Any type of movement helps. That and watching caloric intake. When your ready to do something, the mind is mighty powerful, and it WILL be done. Of course most of us can't do it ourselves, that's why we're in the boat we're in. We need a mind set change and either reading books on why we eat or even going to Overeaters Annonymous or other programs like that, that are free, can help with that mind change. I really enjoyed seeing you all on the program!

Very well said Margie, on everything.  As you said, we have come to know Lin in these past couple of months and met Rebecca at the show.  They both seem like wonderful caring people.  In defense of Rebecca and LIn, as a mom, and you moms know this, we are very protective of our children.   Just because a child is inquisitive does not mean she is being taught to be disrespectful towards her elders.  My daughter and I have discussions all of the time about issues and it doesn't mean she is judging people or being disrespectful, it just means she is trying to learn about the world around her.  Margie is right.  She and I have laughed about how we both run up our stairs repeatedly to get exercise.  If you don't have stairs, go to a mall or some building with stairs.  I haven't taken the escalator or an elevator for less than 2 flights of stairs in a couple of years.  I park at the back of the parking lot and walk.  I make intentional decisions each and every day to get my exercise in.  It is not glamorous and it isn't always fun, but the years I am buying back to have with my loved ones is worth every unglamorous moment.   I loved Rebecca's idea about checking with the produce manager for imperfect fruit.  I live in a small town with one grocery store and not a lot of choices.  It takes me more time to shop, but honestly, because we are eating healthy and eating the right portions, I buy less food.  I spend about the same as I did when I shopped for convenience items.  We drink ice water which is in place of soda.  That alone saves about 10 dollars a week.  Did my kids love the idea?  No, but they have adapted, they didn't have a choice.  I just wanted to say that I was in agreement Margie.  You can do it and the exciting thing is, it is not a diet, it is a lifestyle change.  Once you have started it, there is no stopping it or you, for that matter.
