Quote From: blondie9872

Hello Everyone:

On Dr. Phil's show on Wed.  He stated there was going to be a "Loose 50 # club"  but I can only find the 100# club.

I know that every # is a challenge for each of us.

Am I missing something on the website?  I saw that someone else could not find the 50#  club either.

Good luck to each and every one of use in our new life style changes.

Blondie

Hi David;

My father also had Polymyositis and one thing I can tell you for sure is that exercise and eating good for you food sure helps.  He was ill for 12 years passed away at age 81 which considering they told him he only had a couple of years sure proved THEM wrong but as long as he was exercising and moving he did great.

He too gained weight when first on steroids (pain killers will also cause weight gain) but with the exercise and my Mom taking care of the good food side of things his weight gain stopped and he was able to lose over half of it.  However more important than that the exercise and good nutrition changed fat to muscle (dont believe anyone who tells you the disease will not allow you to strengthen and even build your muscles.  Side line my best friend has muscular dystrophy and they told her she could not gain muscle either but she did. Nyah!  Nyah!) improved his immune system and his spirits.

I lost 110 pounds thanks to Dr. Phil and kept it off without any effort for 5 years however last year I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma (a blood cancer) and the meds I am on have the side effect of causing rapid weight gain.  I am up 35 pounds but the good habits (behaviours) that I learned by following the Ultimate Weight Loss plan have stayed with me.  Believe me - when will power fails and life lets you down good habits will see you through.  Do something long enough and suddenly you will be eating and exercising on auto pilot no matter what happens.  In fact I clearly remember sitting in the doctors office NOT listening to him tell me about my disease because I was thinking damn it I could have had the chocolate cake last night.  But guess what?  I never did have that cake because I just didnt need it anymore.

Just a few tips All that high fat junky type food may be placating and medicating you but in the wrong way.  It is working against you by depressing your immune system.  Eat a rainbow of raw fruits and vegetables everyday for the antioxidant and immune boosting properties they have.  Eat small meals and snacks at least every 3 hours.  Take a vitamin D3 supplement 0f 1000 IU to help rebuild cells.  Start off exercising slowly but just never stop.  The first time I road the exercise cycle at the gym the speed thingy never even registered a speed but did I care when the jock instructor sneered because my 74 year old Mom was kicking my butt? Yes.  But he was an idiot.  And finally - have patience.

Wishing you all the success you and your family deserve.

Maureen

Maureen,
Thanks for the reply.  I don't find too many people with Polymyositis. especially at my age.
Your father was lucky to have your mother keep after him and keep him going.  Since I do all the cooking, I only have myself to blame.  However I love to eat fruits and vegies of all kinds, but I live with Picky eaters who don't see things my way.  I have learned to exploit the few vegetables they do like, but give me a break on corn, green beans and peas.  So sometimes I will make myself something else.  NOT anymore, they are going to have to eat what I make or go hungry or make something themselves.

My worst time is at night.  After I take what I call my Cocktail of drugs that gets me through the night and helps me to sleep, I get terribly hungry and of course loose all sense of will power.  I can chow down on anything in site, MOSTLY snack CRAP.  There is where I think (know) i'm failing.   I drink a lot of Green tee when I can, but this week I started to drink a cup of decaf (of course) green tee shortly after I take my Cocktail of drugs and it seems to help.  I learned about that on Oprah.  I also like dried fruits and nuts, which helps.  Just enough to take the edge off.

I do walk a lot and try to keep active as much as possible.  I take time at work to stretch and walk as much as possible.  I do NOT take any pain medication during the day.  I refuse.  As a regional manager, I babysit 25 employees and 15 computers, and I can't aford to be doped up all day.  I have the ability to block out pain for an extended period of time, but it can wear on you after a while, so when I get home I take a 1/2 hr. power nap before starting dinner.

I do have a treadmill, and my wife was more faithfull in using it last Winter than I was.  I had a problem when I first started using it.  My legs swelled so bad after I first used it, that the capilaries close to the skin actualy burst and I was bleeding down my legs.  After that I used it slowly and with much care.  I would rather walk outside around our development.

My goal is to get off some of the drugs and pain meds, I still have to do the chemo, loose a few pounds and gain some mucle back.  I'm doing good for a person who is supposed to be in a wheel chair.  I no longer (refuse) to use a cain and I believe I can manage this disease rather than have it manage me.

Thanks for the encouragement.  I hope the rest of my family shares my enthusiasm.  I just need to keep mine up.

David

Hello.  I'm 36, married and just had a baby 2 months ago to a beautiful baby boy.  I can't say I'm going to blame my weight on having a baby because I've been overweight for several years now.  I guess you could say I've been in the denial stage for quite sometime.  Ya know that stage where you look at yourself in the mirror and think, "I don't look too bad today"...then someone takes a picture of you and you sit there in shock and wonder who that person in the picture?  I'm a tall girl and always figured I could hide my weight better than most.

Well I have a situation where you would think it would motivate most to loose weight.  I have a good job, and I get health care through it and my husband is self employed farmer and he can't get health care on his own due to his weight.  I wanted to stay at home and be a Mom, but I can't get health care outside of having a job.  It never occured to me that an insurance agency can deny you because of your weight when everything else if perfectly healthy! No blood pressure, diabeties, nothing.  So..in order for me to get health insurance to stay home I have to loose weight.  Good motivations right?  It is, but there's a part of me that's so stuck in my ways...that's it may not be enough.

Hello All

My name in Heather and I am from Indiana.  In 2007, I lost 72 pounds, but unfortunately I fell off the band wagon and have gained about 25 pounds back.  I still have around 80+ pounds to lose and need some motivation from anyone that can help.

Thanks

How do I join the 100 club?

This is my first time on here. I want to join the 100 club. What do I do?    Also, I'm having a hard time accessing the weightloss race. I want to ask a trainer about the treadmill. I really like Nicole, because we're both under 5 ft., lol. The next chapter I'm going to read in the book is about weight loss reistence. After starting walking on the treadmill, I gained a lb! It's so frustrating!

Don't give up

Quote From: grammatrish

Hi to all, i am 75 years old with type 2 diabetes.  i am 5'2  and weigh 250 and am relatively small framed.  i  do a good job of keeping diabetes in line but don't lose weight.

activity is almost nil.  with severe spinal stenosis, and chronic pain, i don't burn many calories.  i have to use a walker some of the time.   i want better health and am using this opportunity to get the support through the program and this web site.  is there anyone out there in my age bracket, that has been successful or is trying to .   Gramma trish

Hi Gramma trish

I too am almost 70 and glad to see someone my own age with the same problems. I have had type 1 diabetes for 16 years and three years ago I got Dr, Phil's book and it has started me on the way back to good health. The first year and a half, I lost 65 lbs and because of the weight loss, I no longer need any medication for my diabetes. Proper diet and exercise really worked for me. Now, when I say exercise, I really mean that I got off my but and started moving. I do have a treadmill, which, I used for 20 min. a day. That's about 1 mile. You can do this at any speed so long as you do it. Now......last winter in Florida, I didn't have my treadmill and lost my walking buddy so my husband walked with me and that turned out to be my downfall. He could only walk half the distance I was used to and only on good days. So..consequently, I gained back 10 lb s.  My diabetes is still good but its a struggle to keep it in line. I am sure that I only ate what I could but too much of it and that was my problem.  NOW....I am recharged again and want to continue with the 100 lb club and finish the extra 45 lbs. I also need help keeping motivated. Perhaps we can help each other with encouragement and quick tips. Your friend, Pat

Hello Melissa!  I am 22 years old and I used to weigh 287 pounds.  It makes me feel less insane that someone else is dealing with the same problem.  I still struggle with emotional eating.  It took me forever to lose 77 lbs within a year and a half.  The only way I lost the weight was by making small changes in my lifestyle at first.  One of my goals of this year is to find another outlet so I won't eat nearly as much as I have been.  You are not alone.  If anyone has any good ideas about finding another outlet for emotional eaters, please let us know.  Good luck to everyone!
