(Original Air Date: 09/08/2008) Parents, listen up! If your child has an online profile, he or she could be one click away from disaster. We’re living in a digital world, where photos can be published online for the world to see in an instant. What you or your child might find acceptable might not be acceptable to college recruiters, potential employers or even the police. Former Miss Washington Elyse Umemoto knows all too well the pitfalls of private photos posted online. After being crowned Miss Seattle in 2007, she posed for pictures while celebrating with friends. When the snapshots ended up on the Internet, she landed in the middle of a scandal. Now she worries how it will affect her future. Then, a college student and a recent graduate meet with a job recruiter to perfect their interviewing skills. Find out what the job recruiter saw online that he thinks might keep them from being hired. And, don’t miss how one college student’s online profile may have helped land him in prison! If you think your digital photos are for your eyes only, think again. What you post on MySpace or Facebook could lead to serious consequences. Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

This audience member is a woman with class and manners, somehting many Americans have lost along the way of our sickening changing values...or should I say lack there of.

Clearly if you are going to be a bartender you do not run the risk of having a corporation run a check on my space or face book.

Lines are no longer dawn because, people like you have not been out spoken to politicos who run our life!

Yeah, whatever.  That's not CLEAR as you say.    Where is the line drawn?  You tell me Miss Goody Two shoes.  Only GOD can judge.

09/08 Busted Online

I understand that plenty of people never drank, smoked or had a racy photo taken of them.  It can happen.  But what about all the other things that they did wrong?  Think back to the time where you did something bad and you were afraid of your parent/spouse finding out.  So maybe there wasn't a pic of it.  But now imagine there was a picture.  Maybe it was of you cheating on a test, SPEEDING, running a red light... (you know, something not so bad to you, but maybe to other people.)  Then think of how you would feel.  Stop judging people who have pictures of them online.  You have your fun, others have there own.  Everybody needs to grow up.  Stop judging people.  I don't see anything wrong in her pictures.  You might.  I don't think you are a bad person, so you shouldn't think I am.  Or her.  "To each their own."  All you people who think that this girl is a horrible person needs to think back to when you did something wrong, and then think about how that would affect everybody around you.  No matter what it was, no matter how insignificant you think it was, doesn't mean somebody else doesn't think it is horrible.  That is why I say, stop judging.  She isn't your daughter.  All you can do is teach your kids what you believe, what is right, what is wrong, then in the end it is up to them.

And I'd just like to point out that this post is coming from a 23 year old female, with no kids.  Why should I be teaching you how to act.  When I have kids, I wouldn't want them learning to judge other people!  And also ONE PICTURE doesn't show how you really are, all day, everyday.  It shows how you are in the ONE INSTANT!

Just because you made that statement, your sons are going to to the same thing.  It's like a racist family saying that their sons or daughters will never marry someone of another race and what is the first thing that little Sally does..........................Gets her some chocolate love!!!
Sorry,
Responded to the wrong person!!  Now I can't find them to respond!!

Online Has Become A Public Place

The Internet has become a public place of information that is relevant. I have never once posted a complete profile of my true self. Not because I necessarily what to remain private but because I have never had sufficient reason to display a complete real profile of myself. Once you do that you are using your name and I take that serious. Only through a very unique set of circumstances would anyone be able to realize who I actually am. And the day I do put my real name on something on the net, it will be something worth while putting my name on right. Because there is really nothing wrong with putting your profile on line as long as you respect who you are and realize that on line is now a public place.

I have NEVER had a PHOTO taken of me like that or even near such behavior. I had parents who raised me with manners and grace.  You are generalizing.

you are obviously young when you can say you have never done something out of charter then maybe you can judge her, til then GET REAL AND GROW UP

On today's show, Dr. Phil speaks of employers or other public institutions having the ability to look at facebook profiles. But he never mentioned how they receive access to individual profiles. Is it possible to retreive information off of an individual's profile if that individual has maximum privacy settings?

Does facebook sell information? Are they obligated to disclose a profile to employers or law enforcement?

Thank you to anyone who has any infromation.

Sanja

I've seen numerous shows and news spots on this subject, and they NEVER mention HOW these companies get into your profile.  I can't get access to anyone's profiles with out their permission.  I've just typed in a random name and I can't see anyone's profile.  I also would like to know how this is done.  Is it legal for them to do so? Does facebook have any obligation to "the law"?  Should I be worried about MY privacy?  I understood that only my friends could see what I'm up to.

Does anyone know?  thanks

I agree. This young lady, and I use the term loosely , said the party was just like any other time.  If this is so than it does represent who she really is.  People are not even embarrassed any more for things they do.  I don't know if they just don't care or it they were never taught to control themselves.  I have done some embarrassing things in my life but I sure don't take pictures!!!

Where do we draw the line

Watching todays show I feel confused on how a potential employer has the right to look you up online to see what you have done in your past. I am sure everyone has done something in their past they are not proud of, I feel that just because we have new technology does not mean people have the right to seek out information that does not have anything to do with them; Like Ms .Washington she did not intend for her pictures to be used against her but they were ... has it really come down to checking people out online to see who they are or should we go back to old school where people meet you and take that first impression and form and opinion from there. I am sure Everyone has a skeleton in their closet that they don't want let out. Sometimes I think no-one has any privacy anymore.

Monday's Show

I watched Dr. Phil's new Sept 8 show also. I really didn't understand why he and Robin had to go through the first 8 or 10 minutes of the show explaining that they were not getting divorced and showing us her empty seat, what was that all about. Dr. Phil you sometimes really can dramatize things. If you have watched the show for all these years and have seen them together and see her sitting in that seat day after day, year after year, I would think we would all have enough sense to realize that these rag papers are just that and if you buy them read them and believe them you deserve the dirty gossip they reveal.

On another note, I tried watching the new spin off with the four doctors but unfortunately, they are on the same time on a different channel, so how do you manage this Dr. Phil??? Now I have to tape Dr. Phil show on one TV and the Doctors show on another. What is the purpose of this competition????  If I didn't love you so much Dr. Phil, I would have said, hell with this and not watch you at all. Ok, I vented for today, now tomorrow I will return to work and hope my tapings work and I can get both shows to watch.
