This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

Find out what happened on the show.

but i GUARANTEE you that you aren't still being discriminated against. once again you have NO CLUE! you can never compare your situation or experience to ours.  whether you are irish or not your color will still be white so you can fit right in. whether i'm from jamaica or africa, my color is still black and that is how you will ALWAYS view me as. i bet you couldn't be viewed as an irish unless you revealed it. GET REAL lady. you haven't lived it, so dont speak about it.  and I have experienced it so i am NOT taking credit for something i wasn't involved in. so please pick a topic you know about.

You werent in slavery!!!!! Explain to me why its only black person who are complaining of their past????? I'm sorry but the Jews had it WAY worse than the blacks. Get over yourself, and stop being a victim. Also, you have a very poor attitude just from your writing. And believe me that probably shows when you interact with others, so maybe its your attitude and not the color of you skin as to why your being treated the way you are.

The N-Word

I saw your show today on THE N-WORD. It's very sad that  in this country, and we have  to be on pins and needles with everthing we say and do.  This is supposed to be a country of freedom.  We can't say this or that.  I think we have the right to say anything we want.  Including the N-Word as long as it's not in a derogatory way.  Paul Mooney was out of line with the things he said.  He owes those women an apology. If anybody has chip on his shoulder it's him.  He  was very out of line with his comments.  I work with two spanish girls one is from Panama and the other is from Nicuragua.  The girl from Nicuragua has a baby with a black man. When I met him, afterwords I asked her if that was "HER BABY DADDY" no offense was taken.  I am Greek, and when we talk about our ethnic backround we always say my people do this,  Or is that how your people do.  IT'S ALL IN THE WAY YOU USE WORDS, AND FOR THAT PHRASES ALSO. And Sheryl Underwood is under the boat as Paul Mooney.   If Paul Mooney would like to know his last name MOONEY means vagina in Greek.  How's that Paul.

ramblings...

I heard one guest say that there was a study done in 1960 and again this year that tested little black girls by asking them to choose which doll is prettier, the white doll or the black doll. He said that during both studies the girls chose the white doll as the prettier of the two and that this proves that America was brainwashed and is still brainwashing our children to see white people as the superior race. I would like to know if the children were given more than two choices or was it just a white doll and a black doll? The reason I say this is because as a little girl and even as an adult, we always tend to think we would like what we don't have. For example, I always had straight hair and wished it was curly. My daughter has brown hair and always wanted blond hair. My brother was super skinny and always wanted to be heavier. I could go on and on. I also feel that the same guest sounded ignorant when he said the question the children were asked should have been "which doll looks like a serial killer...the white one". The difference between that man and me (a white woman) is that I could care less if he wants to refer to white people as serial killers. Statistically he is correct! I don't condone the use of the "n word" any more than I condone the use of the "f word". It is merely a word that is offensive to a majority of people and all of us should be more careful of how we throw words around. Being from the South, I find the term "red-neck" to be offensive but I am not going to scream "racist" at the black people I hear use it! I just think we, as a society, need to practice empathy and we would all be more peaceful!!!

Were you there? It is sad that those things happened but you did not live in those times nor did we, so therfore don"t blame inocent people for the past, Have you forgot who gave you the rights you have now, ummmmmmmm, i believe it was the white man.

As a white man I find the question, " Have you forgotten who gave you the rights you have now?" rather

.......unfortunate.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: PennyLane78

Who died because of this WORD? Did people over react to the use of this word? Possibly. Did people kill while saying this word? Possibly. But no one DIED because of a WORD.

The idea behind the word? Sure...but this word only has the power anyone GIVES it.

It's clear you didn't read my entire post.

No one died BECAUSE of this word... My people died while being CALLED this word, while being force to believe we WERE this word! We, as black people, made the mistake of getting used to using this word. But, If you(white people) use it PERIOD, it has its consequences. We're tired of hearing white people use it. Face it! Words can make people feel sore. Its like insulting a child growing up, when he/she gets older he/she wont like you to use those words!!!

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: joijoi

God gave you better guidance than your parents did.  I'm glad you turned out the way you did.  You passed your beliefs on to your children.  Someone has to stop the cycle, you just did.  God Bless you.  There should be more like you.  We must learn to see pass color,  and ethnic background.  When we mix amongst each other, we learn so much.  We also learn that we are more alike than not.  We have the same hopes and dreams, live and breathe the same air, and will all die in so many years.  That's it in a nutshell.
Thank you so much...my siblings are still racist but I crossed the barrier by dating a black man...I can't call him AfricanAmerican because I live in Canada. I don't see colour anymore I just see a beautiful human being and I hope  my kids do too.  I wish everyone could be colour blind some day and racial slurs could be a thing of the past.

Unfortunately, not talking about will not help. You learn through discussion. It is just the nature of the beast. We cannot let this topic continue to be the purple elephant in the corner, meaning "everyone knows it is there but it is too emotional to discuss." This is emotional for everyone but like all things in life, not allowing conversation and opinions about it to be stated allows it to continue.

It's Time to Change

I grew up as a child in the 70's hearing the n word used by adult African Americans (then called  Blacks or colored by some elders) referring to men~saying things like " That n.......  is crazy!  or  N....get outta my face! However, I also knew the hurt and anger the was brought about by whites using the towards blacks. There was one white kid on our block who called some black  kids the n word. I don't remember exactly what happened, but he never said it again. I also learned a lot from Roots and other shows of its kind at the time. As a child, I and my friends sang lymrics with all kinds of words and phrases that would now be consider politially incorrect and racially offensive. I never repeated in my home or said them loud enough for any neighbors to hear. And even though I said these things as a child, I would not want child to say them.  Although I understand the use of the N word by African Americans to each other, I feel that because of the origin of the word it should not be used. I have similar objections to words such as pimp, trick, ho,and b..... .  The "friendly" use of the n word makes it difficult to explain to my teenage son  that even though words such as pimp and trick seem to be "new and improved" , the original meaning is still the same and for that reason it should not be used.  There may be some people who may not have known the history of the n word , but when you know better, you do better.

Get over it?

I don't use the N-word, but I am around people who do and sometimes listen to music that has the N-word in it. I have had the N-word directed at me in a derogatory manner. What struck me was the ease in which the situation went from a simple misunderstanding to having  the N-word bomb dropped on me and the hate that was behind its use. That's why I don't use it in conversations, there is too much negative connotation behind it.

What I HAVE issue with is people who say just get over racism. Also that woman who said the blacks have to just work a little harder for what they want. Why should any race have to work a little harder for the same thing? If there were no racism the playing field would be even. My son is in high school and plays football. His team is racially diverse and win or lose if they are playing a team from another town there are racial issues. I will get over racism when my son is no longer told to go home and eat chicken and chitlins or (N-Word) get off our bus.

Does this make me racist?

I do NOT use the n word and I am uncomfortable when other people (white OR black) use it around me.  I am a white woman who despises racial slurs of any kind.  I am not comfortable with words that demean anyone...black, white, jewish, mexican.

However, I am also uncomfortable with the fact that there are television stations (BET/Black Entertainment Television) that are primarily created for one race.  If there were a station called White Entertainment Television, can you imagine the uproar it would cause?  Does it make me a racist that I see this as hypocratic?
