This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

Find out what happened on the show.

Over- reacting?

This will be a topic of discussion no matter who says what. It will stay this way, probably forever, but since we're on the subject, I might as well put in my two sense. I'm so tired of people always being called "racist" for saying the "N" word. It's a word. It's in the dictionary. The meaning behind it, "a person of any race or origin regarded as contemptible, inferior, ignorant, etc" It means you're IGNORANT! which most of you are, because "African-Americans" take offense to the word. People give other meanings to words, than what they are intended to be. Some ask, well if I called you a "cracker" would you be offended? No. Because a cracker is something you eat! Not a white person. I've struggled with this throughout high school, because teenagers would stand in the cafe at lunch and create some type of debate about "their ancestors were slaves" and they act like it still affects them 100s of years later. Black people weren't the only ones that were slaves people! Do you not remember what they taught you in Elementary school/Middle school? I'm only 18, so I'm not trying to "belittle" adults, but I've recently just got out of school. You guys haven't attended in quite some time. There will still be controversy over this, no matter what someone says. But people really need to stop being so hard headed when it comes to a word. Don't be offended, if you aren't what the definition applies. I'm not racist, so don't attack me for my opinion. Because that's what it is, an opinion. Thanks.

It's never going to die

This word will never die.  It has been used for such a long time.  I asked my children if it's used at their school and they all three said "yes".  I don't think it's spoken verbally quite as much as when I was growing up in the South.  However, just because people are politically correct at work and socially I don't buy that it's not thought or spoken in the privacy of their own home.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: jaukowarrant

This word has been around almost as long as America been a country. It's history runs deep. Don't tell me that its meaning and correlation can be wiped away so easily cause it can't and its a dis honor to the ones who did suffer when this word was created. NO one is attempting to give this word power but its word with meaning that includes racist intent. D*** and Fa**** offends me too but these words are unequal for a number of reasons. The N word is a international word. Different continents knows of its meaning and who it is directed to. Other derogatory remarks such as the ones you speak about are not only have different meanings in America but isn't even consistent in other English speaking territory.

This word has been around since before this was a country!!!

the bad word

I don't use that word. But when I talk with some people who are Afraican Amerinera, some of the young people think that I am against them since they are of the heritage. Couple of my good friends is black and it does not bother me. One of them is a President of one of Canadian Football teams, and I like him for who he is. I found that they do have a good sense of humor and just want to liked. If they bleed it is the same color as mine. The young black people really think that everyone is against them. This could be the young peoples fight that they started for everyone. I do not like that at all.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: manofgoods

I really think that people whoever uses the N-word (no matter what race you are) is really disgraceful & it disrespects African-Americans. Rappers, etc., shouldn't even use the N-word in the first place in their music lyrics. That's why whenever I listen to rap, etc., I usually go for the Edited versions of it, whatever it comes from buying CD's, or downloads. Plus we wonder why kids are saying things that they shouldn't be saying. It's 2008 now, soon to be 2009.

And I'm a African-American man myself (I'm only 26 years of age). It's time for this world to grow up, & quit living in the past.

Look up the word find out the real meaning and where it came from. This is the great USA and we have freedom of speach!!!!!!!!!!

SAYING THINGS THEY SHOULDNT!!!! Its called freedom!!!!

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: jaukowarrant

I give much credit to Dr. Phil for attacking this issue. We are supposed to be a United America but this is one of the things keeping us from being that. I am black and it's been close to 4 years that I've been with my girlfriend who is white. She comes from a household that uses the N word a lot towards blacks. Growing up I knew of it only as a bad word not to be said and I retain that in my adult life. She grew up to evolve from her parents close minded believes and now we are building a family with her parents backing the relationship 100%. As an American I believe in free speech, but personally I feel as if this is a word that shouldn't be uttered. I would kill for BLACK Americans to quit using this word it simply divides us. I know plenty of blacks that don't say the word but it should be all of us that refrain from saying it. That being said it's a little dumb and childish for whites to say the word, knowing they shouldn't, and defend their actions by saying blacks use it too. To quote our parents "If Blacks jump off a bridge should you do the same?". Since the word can't be banned I say lets give this word to the ones who wish to do nothing else but separate this country. We need to become better people and self regulate on the words we say. In my eyes the word is "hands down" the number one indicator of a racist, judgmental, and prejudice person and there is no way around that. To say the word is to confirm that you are a person influenced by stereotypes and can be mislead to do and act in a way that you know is wrong. Feeble. If the word must be kept legal let it be said by the Racist and only the racist. We must show we are not the offender but the victim in this debate. The Word is Wrong end of story. If fingers must be pointed let it be used to resolve the issue.
I have to reply here!!! So I am now being childish for saying a word that means "Negro"  I would ask are you dark skinned? Look up the word! Everyone makes it what it is. I did not realize I lived in a communist country where the words I use are sencored. Grow a back bone!!!

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: cornell74

Thank you for your kind reply. I am angry. I am angry because it upsets me so bad that this fight continues. It angers me that whites have to fight to prove they are not racist. There are allot of racist whites in the world but there are allot of whites that are not and I have felt my entire life that I have to prove I'm not racist. I like blacks have been beat up by blacks and abused by one while laying defenseless after a major back surgery and instead of looking at them like their racist I looked at them like they were just evil. If I looked at them like it was racism it could easily of made me hate all blacks. Its like this, If a dog bites a child and we tell that child stay away that is a dog and it will bite you, that child will fear all dogs. However if we tell the child that was just a mean dog to stay away from that one they will know how to separate a good dog from a bad. Every time a black is mistreated by a white they automatically say its racism. Why can't it be that maybe that white person is just a mean person?  By always yelling racism makes whites look bad. I want a black person to yell "Nice white person " every time a white is polite and fair to a black that way maybe people will see its not as bad as it looks. If whites didn't care about blacks would I be here busting my butt and wasting my time with this discussion. A real racist would make a crude remark on the board and then go away and say I'm not wasting my time with that crap. Dr Phil is having this debate because the word is being used by people in a friendly way now and most people think its wrong. I think its wrong if its being used to hurt another. You know what, I live right outside of Detroit and Detroit is pretty much emptying out because there are just no jobs there. Now where I live is pretty much 45% black. I told my husband that I was so happy to see that blacks and whites are starting to live together. I feel the world has come along way and it gets better and better but every time a black yells discrimination it puts us another step back. I am voting for Obama, I think he has what it takes to make a real change. However I feel most blacks are voting for him because his skin color, that bothers me allot. I agree there are not enough blacks on t.v. I noticed now when I turn the channel there are tons of whites and not enough blacks but I also believe if we all stop yelling about discrimination and just learn to separate the good from the bad, we will then be acting as equals and get along better. Because we won't feel that sense of separation. I have no clue why t.v and magazines have mostly whites in it. I do know that this white neighborhood never said blacks couldn't live in it. Then were forced to because there are no jobs and the mayor trashed the city and so they move into the white neighborhood and everyone is getting along fine. I think blacks have more options then they realize or are willing to admit. No one is holding them back but themselves. Some of the most famous people in the world are black. I just wish we would learn to understand one another.  I feel blacks need to take a moment to listen to how we feel and whites need to listen more to how blacks feel. Blacks are not going to get what they want completely until they too learn to understand whites and get along, it is then and only then that we will be equal. Once we are on a level where we are past yelling racism then I believe I will turn the channel and see both blacks and whites. Not just black shows or white shows but black and white shows. If you noticed whenever there is a black show they do the same whites do, its all black with a sprinkle of white. If they truly wanted to be and equal why not start by being the bigger race and showing that they can have a show with both races or creating a magazine with both races instead of ebony. In doing that they would be the better person. That would create all the progress in the world. They have more power then they think. I'm finished. Oh one more thing, I do not speak for whites I don't know nor do I speak to all blacks, we all know if we relate to something or not. If you can't relate or don't feel the same way, thats expected. No one could ever ever speak for everyone only through experience and we all experience different things therefor we all look at the world differently. So don't write back yelling "I'm white and I don't feel that way", if you don't then don't worry this doesn't refer to you so move on to something that does.

To the crazy lady that loves to chop up and grind my words in the ground. Have at it, child.
I agree with a lot of what you're saying. But as far as racism, I wonder sometimes what some people think racism really is. (I'm not referring to YOU, your post just got me to thinking about some of the people I know) For example, I have a brother-in-law who told me years ago that the worst thing that the white people ever did was to bring the black man up to our "level"-referring to civil rights in the 60s. Then he turned right around and said,"Now, don't get me wrong, I'm NOT racist."  Then another BIL said,"I'm not racist, I just don't like N-word." Now to me, both of these men ARE racist. If they're not, then what exactly IS racism? My greatest shame is that when people say things like this, I just let it go and don't say anything back because they are family and I am a coward. I live in an area where a lot of people think the way these 2 men think. I sometimes wonder if it's possible for things to ever be any different.

Interesting Topic

This is an interesting topic, and kinda funny at the same time. The N word has been blown up to something bad if you say it, or mention the word. I am Native American, and you do not hear Native Americans pitching a fit because we are called "squaw" or "engine" or "savage". It is different when another Native American calls another a "skindine", and if you are Native American you understand that slang. The N word is something that means different meaning when put into a specific context, just like I was educated about seven years ago, it is how you say it but you have to be of the same race to get away with it. Yes there was a huge debate about it, I seen the N word as putting themselves down, but I was told that a person can only use the N word torward another to show respect, and they are down with them. I laughed and I said why would you allow this. I was told to look it up, and it says a person who does work for someone else. But in the real world of people that are quick to judge one by their color of skin are not God and does not have the right to pass judgement upon anyone. God created us all equal but in some peoples eyes they think that they are better then the other but in reality we are all humans but with different shades of skin. I have been taught that the N word is a cuss word, the reason why is that is offends people when you say it, and it is dispectful to say it. Now people say the word, and I laugh because people that get offended by are the first one to say it. Why make a mountain out of mole hill when we can not change people nor can we make them stop saying it. Everyone has a choice in life, and sometime we say things without thinking. but in my family that is a forebidden word to say, and I correct them all the time to say Africian American. My step son said that N word one day, and I turned around and called him "pale face", and he got mad. I told him see how you call someone it hurts ones feelings, and you do not say that word or you will find out the hard way what will happen. He has not ever said that word again, and he corrects people but it is really bad when children have to experience racisim from other children. There will be a time when people will see that there is a time and place for this word, but the bigger picture is that the N word is acceptable by the person that allows you to say it to them. People that are offended by it should speak up and say "please do not call me that word", and that is letting other people know that it is not acceptable to call them that word. This is my thoughts on the word that is blown out of portion........................

Call Me a Nig'ger, Please!

My Ancestry

For many years being called Black or N****r degraded and humiliated people of Color, especially those in America.  But, through Revelation and Research I have found a deeper 'Truth' for  the word N****r.  Praise Yahweh!

N****r comes from the word Niger or The River Niger
and is a shortened form of the word -gher n gheren- “river of rivers”
(shortened to ngher = Ng-her or Nee'ger!),

The Niger River traverses four countries, though the whole basin covers nine countries of West Africa.

The original name of the river “egerou n-igereou”, which means the 'river of rivers' was given by the Tuareg, expressing the 'Exceptional Character' they attributed to it.

The Nations of Nigeria and Niger are named after it, and many ancient Hebrew Tribes depended on this Great River.  The Greek Definition of Niger is pronounced N******r and in Latin it supposedly means Black [land of the Dark Skinned People].

 Since this River encircles the Western Coast of Africa [inland route for enslavement] where the African Diaspora- Holocaust took place, it places the Slaves History as belonging to Hebrew Royalty and African Royalty according to the surrounding Nations. {Benin being 'Benjamin'}
Also, the Hebrew disciple Simon of Niger shows that the original Hebrews often used towns to identify themselves.  The 'I' in N****r is a 'Y' in Ancient or Pure Hebrew and pronounced as a double 'E' sound as with the letter 'J'.

The stigma is gone [If people let it].  I am thankful for us all and pleased to be called N*****r, Dark or Black (although color does not define a Nation or Race); It does define the 'struggles of a people'.   If people would embrace the True definition of 'N****r' as they did with the term 'Black' many disputes, divisions, hatred and deaths would be eliminated...as We through the Almighty were able to 'dignify' the usage of 'Black'.

Why can't people just accept the Truth!  We have 'fought and dignified' the Term 'Black'....So why can't 'N*****r' {and forms of the word} be a positive force of knowledge and power?  I find the word 'Lynch' a legitimate offensive word and yet I will not even let that word 'knock me off my square'

'Can't play the game if you're not on the Board'!

I have 'grown' and learned that 'ignorant name calling' is just that: Ignorant Hatred!  Why engage in an argument about the word N*****r?  Why give credence to the false interpretation? 'Only A fool rejects the Truth and responds to hatred'.  Just accept the True Definition, please!

I do respect and most of the time really enjoy your distinguished guest Mr. Paul Mooney.  Intelligent, funny and real.

Sincerely,

Minister Yahweh_Eahoue

Words are not empty they do have meaning, and this word has great historical meaning behind it, it far out reaches the F word which all races use by far, it was used to degrade those who at one time could not defend themselfs against it.

Your two meaning you give above say the same thing, just one is shorter, and leaves the person it is meant for a wider birth of what you  meant and leads to more then less to the imagination.

Moral: If you know who you are, opinionated ideas or ignorant words are worthless and not worth the time.

Adults should be mature and impart this attitude to their children.  Innocence can be harmed by these intended insults which could result in violence besides suffering. Children need to be protected by nourishing good self-esteem, educated and lovingly validated by parents, mentors, teachers or "The Village".
