This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

Find out what happened on the show.

The word Savage! used for Native Americans

I am decedent of the Creek Tribes in Tx/Fla on my mothers side and Creek Tribe in NC/SC. on my fathers side. the word Savage was a bad word in their day. To be called that was as you were dirty,a thief,Liar , nasty smelly and all other low down as you can get. They too, were slaves and still today that word is used. But no one makes a big deal over it. But maybe they should. I just thought I would add my two cents. thanks. Justa Coyote

As far a that N word, why even use it at all? What good is it? does it really mean anything really but to the white man? Why do the people of color use it too? Don't they know its the white mans word and not to use it? I could go on but its not worth it. Sorry but to each its own to use or not to use. Its just a dumb word that was used in a bad time and place and to people who did not deserve to be treated that way. But in this day and time, it has all come to pass, but we should not forget the past for our family's sake. But do forget all the hate that was there, and it is now and people of all colors and backgrounds are coming together now, and who can define what is black or what is red or white . There is so much mixing what else is there to fight about? Let all that hate from the past go, your only fighting within your own heart. Let it go and find the peace within your self and not hate. Who wants to live that way? give yourself peace and others will feel it. And if there is mean people in your way and ugly talk, go away from it and gather your peace for YOU and no none else. In other words Pray. thanks

the n word debate

if this word isn't suppose to be used by everyone it shouldn't be used by anyone, but what gets me is where s.c. is the state used in association with the clan! why not alabama? goodness, we could start another show here.something else that bothers me- they fuss about words, they want public apologies when they have been wronged, but Al Sharpton nor Jesse Jackson apologized to the boys at Duke. If it's right for one it's right for all.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: debenny

It's always good to first put oneself in other people's shoes before judging. Every single person in this world is looking for better life and would go anywhere it exists. If it exists in Africa, i'm sure we all here in the U.S would be relocated. Let's just be thankful rather than boastful.

Racism is not going to end by sending anyone anywhere. I have two bi-racial children ( black american and white). I have brought them up knowing both sides of their history. I also have taught them that every person in America, despite race, have a chance to do anything with their lives as long as they put their mind to it. The longer African Americans live in history, racism will continue. Not because the so called white man is doing it to them but it is themselves who won't let it go.  African Americans have more  chances at success than others because they have so many groups that are set up just for African Americans. Wheras all non African American funding is used for all races. The hate is going to stop when we allow for children to learn the history of slavery in schools and parents stop bringing generation after generation believing this stuff has effected them still to this day. The n word is not allowed around my home.  I have taught my children when they have asked what it means I tell them an ignorant person ( the dictionary meaning) and therefore whoever uses this word is just that an ignorant person and we choose not to hang around ignorant people. Therefore we don't mark a certain race because we all know ignorance knows no color.  Some of their public figures and groups could to non African Americans appear to be racist against anyone non African American but because we are in this great nation others around the world see as "The land of the free" they can be as public as they choose. But until the day we all overcome hatred on everyone's part and all come together as Americans the hate will not stop.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

The  N-word can't even be written in full on this board without it being changed .

I don't like the word I don't use the word, but I'm tired of others that do use the word like it means pal or friend, and then take offence when whites use the word. equal rights for all ( right)

Take the word and trash its historic meaning, that is their choice, or protect it and stop using it and remember those that fought to to be rid of it. but if you choose to put it out there then remember that if you do then others will use it ,  with ease again, in the way they choose to use it. You won't have that control over the word no more.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: jessstamp

When my kids started hearing this word on tv and in music after being told not to use and asked me about it, I thought long and hard about what first seemed like an impossible oxymoron before answering. But then it just came to me. It's the same as me and my sister when we were little and my two children right now. We could beat the crap out of each other because we were blood, but Lord help anybody else who even looked at the other wrong. Brothers and sisters do terrible things to each other. It doesn't make it right, it's just the way the relationship is and always has been. When they grow up and mature, they stop. The racism issue is still young. Hopefully, when it grows up and matures, this behavior will stop.
I agree with most of what you have said. I  disagree with the comment regarding the "youth" of racism. Racism has existed for thousands of years; just read the Bible. Racism will begin to erode when all human beings begin to grow up and mature. Almost all of us have made a derogatory comment to or about someone of another race. When we can stop believing that any one race is better than another and stop using words expressing that belief, then we will then begin to chip away and eventually demolish racism.

honestly, you do sound a bit old

Quote From: cinander

Quick Story that happened 9.11.08 - yesterday. Traveling down a two lane street in my local town and about 8 African American teens ages 15-19 were walking down the street taking up my ENTIRE lane. Tooted the horn for them to move and received no response. Tooted horn again and told by them to use the left lane. I advised nicely that it was a two way street and not a sidewalk made specifically for them. I was then called an Old White B----H! Can't say what I wanted to, but I did inform them that they were very disrespectful young adults and need to adjust their attitude.

I am sick of hearing about how African Americans are discriminated against when they also discriminate. Young or old , I hear all of their names for White people. They need to get out of the civil war times and get with the real world. Respect is given when it is received. And by the way - I do not believe that they are minorities these days - I believe that Caucasians are the minorities of this country now.!

first of all, caucasians are not the minorities of this country now. go on the national census bureau website and do a little research before you make statements like that.

secondly, i have to agree with you on one point. Respect IS given when it is received. and as communities within this country, people of color have not received respect. not in terms of employment, not in terms of residential or educational equality, not in terms of local, state, or federal policy, not in the cultural messages that are sent through the media, and now, not in your mind.

so some kids were walking in the street. get over it, i'm sure you will live.

oh, and your demand, 'get out of the civil war times and get with the real world' is too ludicrous and majorly flawed to even address in this forum.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: bellasaurus

I'm 17 and I live in SC so I hear people use it all the time. I've used it a time or two but look IT'S A WORD. Who decided it was bad? We all need t grow up and get over it. Honestly if you get upset over this word you are immature.
I would like to encourage you to do some research on the N word.  Who decided it was bad? When ANY word is used in a manner so as to demean and belittle another is enough to make a word bad. Yes, we all have some maturing and growing to do. I don't know if you are a Christian or not, but I would encourage you also to seek out what the Bible says about words and how WORDS do hurt and how words can cause people to get upset. It's not a matter of being immature, but a matter of having feelings and being offended when words are used toward another in a demeaning way.

the n debate

Let me start off by saying that I am not a racist person, however the black people are always talking about equal rights and what not, so let me ask something why is it alright that the black people have their own black entertainment channel on tv, they have their own black beauty pageants, their own black college foundations etc..   If we started making white only channels, college foundations, pageants and stuff we would be considered racist and not treating blacks and whites equally so why is it alright for them to. It seems to me that the blacks are what is racist now days. Also what is up with calling blacks "african americans" and not calling whites "caucasian". African blacks are completely different from the blacks here in the US. They are very kind and very appreciative of what they have and receive as gifts where as MOST of the blacks here think that everything is owed to them because of what has happened in the past. Let it go. I think that the persons character and behavior and actions is what makes them a N, whether they are white, black, brown, blue. Blacks also have the highest percentage of people in jail and the highest number who is on welfare, so maybe once they start contributing to society instead of take, take take, then that is when society will start looking at them as someone who contributes instead of always taking. It just annoys me for black people to say that we are the ones who are racist when I think that it is the other way around.
