This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

Find out what happened on the show.

Will anyone ever learn?

I'm a 25 year old white male, honorably discharged from the United States Army in 2006, born and raised in the country in PA. My town held about 2000 people, my HS about 600. Of all those students 2 of them were black, and ironically, they were adopted and raised by white parents. I'm giving you this background because I'm sick of ignorance. We, as a generation and a race period, can only blame so much on our families and environments that raised us. I was raised in a very split family, my mother's side was racist, my father's side was not. Every race has it's own group of people that presents it's worst assets. White people have them, Black people have them, Asians have them, it's just that simple. BUT, the complexities that we, as a country, add to problems because of history astound me. We have to know where we were to get where we are going, I agree. But spend too much time looking where you were and you'll never find the time, or the path, to get where you should be. I was very interested in the show today, I found ignorance sitting on both sides of the panel. The White woman who was saying we, as a race, should be allowed to use that word. I don't think any race has a right to use this word, period. The black comedian who wouldn't let anyone else talk but said his ancestors were stolen. Seriously, do some research, your ancestors were sold to white people by other black people from Africa. I'm NOT saying that  makes it right, but it DOES give it a different perspective. Maybe not ALL the blame is on us, a majority, but not all. Also, I did find that doll study interesting, were there ever any studies done to see if it was thought that the outcome was morally right? Because I DO find that disturbing. Everyone has the right to self-esteem, and NO ONE has the right to take that away. This country has a lot to work on if we're ever going to move forward. On ALL sides, there is no pointing the finger on this one. That's one problem I've noticed with people of MY generation. Everything is always someone else's fault, there's never any responsibility. And we HAVE to have a sense of responsibility with all of our freedoms. With that, I believe this word should NOT be used, by ANY color, under ANY circumstance. If it's derogatory to such a degree that these conversations have had to go on for years, NO ONE has the right to use that word.  To use it is a simple lack of respect, and that applies to everyone. If a Black person says it, it's just as disrespectful as when a White person says it. Otherwise, guess what folks? It's a double-standard.

As soon as blacks stop referring to whites as honkies, crackers, rednecks, etc., then they'll get the same respect in return.  Until then, you reap what you sow.
What about inbreed that more appropriate

Moment Of Clearity

Quote From: prestype

OMG, Paul Mooney!!!  That man HATES white people.  You can just see it on his face.  He is the most bigoted man I have ever seen.   I am surprised that he gave Dr. Phil the respect to come on the show!!!  It seems to me that any black comedian can say "cracker", "white devil" or any other slur, but if someone white says the N-word or any other thing, they wind up apologizing to Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton.  Speaking of Al Sharpton, during the Tawana Brawley fiasco, (I'm sure many New Yorkers remember that) I was in Downtown Brooklyn on Jury Duty walking around Court Street at lunchtime.  Down the block comes the Rev. Al Sharpton.  (Alton Maddox's office was on Court Street).  Well, the Rev. Sharpton had on the most beautiful blue pin stripped suit and he looked very handsome in it.  I walked by him and said "Rev. Al, beautiful suit".  This man looked at me as if he wanted me dead.  I knew it was because I was white.  He didn't want to know anything from me because I was white, but I only wanted to compliment him.  It reminded me of how Malcolm X treated white people that only wanted to help his cause.  I laughed that day and I laugh now at how he tries to make it look like he is a good guy.  Another thing, about Barack Obama, where is his WHITE mother.  She is never around.  Unless she is dead, I think that he should have her with him because you know this whole thing is going to become a racial card and if mom shows up, this wil be avoided.  And the N-word, to me it means ignorant and believe me, I know a lot of N white people.  If you are genuinely a good person, color doesn't matter, but please don't be a phony.  If you don't like white people just because they are white, say so.  Don't tell me about your ancestors being slaves.  My people didn't come to this country until the early 1900's from Naples, Italy.  They were too poor to eat, let alone have a slave.  Just remember, if you are going to give it out, your going to get it back.

I see your point but it is not exactly true. Some people who have been exposed to racisit people have a somewhat tender spot towards people of that race.  My grandmother who was heavily exposed to racism is not racist but she remebers how it was but is leary towards white people cause she remebers it.  There are ignorant people of all races.  For someone to use racist statements towards another race is ignorant. But what we(as people) should do is try to take the high road.

I am not racist but I dislike those who think that they are better than you because they a certain color.  Now does that make me a racist because I I dislike thoses type of people? I have a friend who is white, and he keeps wondering why I feel uncomforable with the "N" word.  I told him that it is a negative word that came from and used racist.

Now to you feel towards the black figures that you mentioned.  They have taken a lead against racism and because of that a lot of (racist) come at them from various angles.  And sometimes you can keep your gaurd up so much that you may not realize that you are doing so.  Exp:  You me be in a crime infested area.  Someone approaches you for directions, and you offer them to help them but you watch them because you are not sure it is a setup.  Now you are not calling them a criminal, but you have your guard up because you are surrounded by them. And you shouldn't be considered on because because you took that stance.

I hope that i cleared it up for you some

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: moneee98

African American people are there own worst enemies. They segregate themselves and cry poverty. When the government gives them housing, education or welfare. Then they squander it away and ask for another handout. Its my opinion that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have done more to breed racism towards Afican Americans then help to abolish it. What is being done to stop gang violence, crime and teen pregnancy.  Everyday on the news you hear about drive by shootings, death and violence.  It starts in the home with parents taking responsability for the actions of their children. A skillful mariner didn't always sail in smooth seas.

What is being done to stop gang violence, crime and teen pregnancy.U need to apply that  to gov.palins knocked up teen daughter too...

i think there is a difference between black people and n*****s. black people r the ones that r descent human beings that work for a living, that have standards you know, the ones that are respectful.... the other ones that r crack heads, drunks, thieves, and murderers, those r the niggers. there IS a difference. not all blacks r n*****s. i have friends that r black. i am not racist but i believe you label yourself on how you carry yourself and what you do everyday.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: azeedra

I do agree to an extent.  Many times the whites are accused of being racist.  I don't understand why the race card has to be played at all.  It's just the way shallow, uneducated people behave  I'm a woman and I don't  appreciate being referred to as a bitch or a ho but what are you gonna do?  We're going to continue to have this problem until people learn how to become colorblind when it comes to race and show some respect for their fellow man (or woman).
I sometimes really cant believe you people, and by you people I do mean Whites... The race Card??? How many times have you been on vacation and some person calls there children out of the water because those N-----s are dirtying it up, when was the last time you were refused service not because you were belligerent but simply because you aren't the "right" color?, when was the last time your school at to be shut down because Some Black person wrote die white person die on the walls , because I can sure think of plenty of instances of Blacks experiencing this on a regular bases. I am 26 and was just called colored by another 20 something White girl just a few months ago.. Nooses are hung on trees and Slurs are wrote on houses , crosses still being burnt in yards ..Hell a Black Man is running for President and it will come down to race because White people are...racisist.  There are entire groups dedicated to hating Blacks .. Name one that is Dedicated to Destroying Whites?  You have to understand THAT MOST BLACKS AREN'T LIVING OUT JUST THEIR ANCESTORS PAINS, ITS USUALLY OUR OWN AS WELL.. OUR OWN EXPERIENCES OUR OWN HURTS OUR OWN REAL LIFE BIGOTS THAT HATED US JUST AS EQUALLY ...

The "N" Word Debate Ha!

I have to commit on about the show i just watched was the one fellow spouting off " We were stolen and brought here as Slaves"  , Now no older than what I am he doesn't look old enough to have been "stolen" and brought to the America's and bought and sold as a slave. This "we was slaves" EXCUSE is getting very old and way over used you were never slaves Slavery was abolished over 150 years ago if there was a way for the black people I'd like to see that to see how he would survive back then. Besides it was their own African people that stole them and sold them into slavery not the white people that went to capture them. I guess that since the black people can pittle whine that the "N" word offends them,  I can pittle whine all of you stole my land when you drove the indians onto "reservations" just because my daddy was half indian and his mom and her parents was full blooded.

The "N" word does not just mean black person look up the meaning and you'll see that it relate to other races as well and to be more precise i know at least two white ones and some of other colors if not many more that fits the definition of it ,( a person of any race or origin regarded as contemptible, inferior, ignorant, lazy, good for nothing, etc. ).  I really don't care what color you are GOD created you just the way He wanted you and you are perfectly made even if you're pink or purple.

And yes Jesus our Lord And Savior was a black man with blue eyes ( and futher more he was even hated by his "own kind") that's why it's still often refered to as the "blue eyed religion" should I be offened by that too???  It's time to look past the words of the world and let go of history this world has a lot more to worry about then what joe-bob across the street said or what billy-joe did to my great ,great, great, great ,great grand-parents (5 greats).

WE ARE ALL AMERICANS  WE ARE ALL HUMAN BEINGS AND WE ARE ALL FLESH AND BONE.

" HE WHO REALLY CARES ABOUT COLOR ONLY CARES WHAT CAN FURTHER HIM AND HIS OWN GAIN LET HIM THEN BE SWALLOWED BY HIS OWN IGNORANTS AND LET THE REST OF US BE "

We are one Nation Under GOD not One People under God as we should be shame on us.....

09/12 The N-Word Debate

I don't use the N word, the B word or the C word out of respect.  But, I think that the people who use this

are just hateful people.  If you take those words from everyone, the hateful people will find a word or words that are just as hurtful.  It is not the word but the attitude for other people that is the actual problem.
