This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

Find out what happened on the show.

im rachel from the show

Quote From: cornell74

correction "jake Pollard" just noticed my typo
I have changed the photo, it now shows my grandmother, great grandmother and aunts. If it were big enough you would see they have strong black features. Still I was raised thinking and believing based on my own looks that we were all white (whatever that is).  This family was created thanks to my third great grandfather Jake Pollard. I am very proud of who I am and where I come from.

White people report the news

Quote From: rharkcom

Correct.....who started the African slavery.....BLACKS!!   The Africans sold off their own people.

I lived in Africa for a year and let me tell you...the most pleasant people I met were the locals....LOVED THEM.  A real African and an African-American.....night and day!  Lets just say that African-Americans were NOT welcome and are still not welcome in many African countries.  They are not welcome for several reasons....Africans feel that blacks in the U.S. don't have a clue what it is like to be "African", that the blacks have it very nice here in the U.S.  Another reason is how badly they treat the race and portray the race.....most Africans are disgusted by black Americans.

Not to bring up another subject, but if blacks cared so much....why do you maily see white people going to help Africa, and why do you see mainly white people adopting little african kids!  Where are the blacks stepping up to help their own race???

Of course you would think that because you were there for a year,(Maybe) that you now know what it is like to be black and again the point that was still missed is we our ancestors were stollen. .You say other Africans sold Their people, that is a story we hear from the white man because you somehow beleive that because you have money you own people, (YOU DON'T ) I don't realy believe this but if you have proof..."show me a receipt" And again my issue is not wether or not africans are asking for the black man to go into their village my issue is the white man stole the African man and raped and killed their Women and children...then seperated the families WE LOST OUR HERITAGE

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: choppa87

Its interesting that you are championing this quote and I don't say that to be offensive at all but I would like to speak on some of the points in the message posted. This is moreof a general response and not one directed at you because I am sure some are reading the message and thinking Bravo as well....

Correct Paul Moony was not a slave but you must understand that because of slavery and because of racism towards black in this country is has left the black community crippled. Not entirely and that is why some have been able to make it, well many have.Slaveryhashad a far reaching effect on the mental state of black causing in some a generational defeatist mentality while in some inspiring perserverance. Economically segregation has crippled black community and denied access to resources that, had it not occured, would level the playing field more. Now I don't mean segregation just in terms of Jim Crow, for that is just an example of overt racism. Read up on residential racism, white flight and white privilege as well for examples of subtle racism that has also affected the black community. Please also note that the playing field is never level for in a capitalist society is is the dominant culture that establishes and controls the means to social mobility in our country. What that means is those at the top set qualification for being on a level playing field with them. The notion of America being a 'pull your self up by your own boot straps' or 'life is what you make it' is not reflective of the America we really live in. If that was the case those who work the hardest would be at the top. How many immagrants work 2 or three jobs and don't make as much as a CEO that works less hours and delegates responsibilty instead of doing hard work?

Also, there is not WET because most programming is tailored to the white majority. The white majority is the dominant culture in America. If this were not true think whether or not your regular tv viewing would include more rap videos, or telemundo vs desparate houswives and Dr. Phil. Secondly BET is now owned by blacks, it is owned by VIACOMM.One comedian stated your do have a WET, its called MTV. BET is its black counterpart, think not? Watch the shows and see how they mirrow one another (TRL vs 106 n Park).

The reasons you can't proudly scream white pride is the same reasons that it is offensive if you say the N word. Because the KKK shouts about it all the time, we associate it with white supremacy and looking down on other races. Ask your selves do you want to shout it because your proud (since white generically encompasses so many unique cultures I don't see why you want to be generic and not accept Irish, Italian, Russian, Polish etc Pride) or because blacks, asians and latinos also show their pride. The difference also worth pointing out is that we have to be generic, whites in this country do not. Your history is more accessible and that is why you do not have a month. Our history was altered and in schools they do not teach ancient african history unless you are in college. Your learn about slavery, MLK and Malcolm. Then you go back to Abe and George Washington for the rest of the year.

hello.i am white German Irish and Italian .my parents were born from people who came over in the early 1900.i was raped by a black male when i was 12.never held anything against themi have 4 children who have Jewish blood .i can scream I'm proud to be white because i and my ancestors had nothing to do with slavery.my children have been jumped sneered at and stabbed.by groups called gangs ,mostly black boys and girls  .calling themselves  Li solders ,Ninetta, bloods.i am sorry but most (not ALL)black people blame the whole white race  for the slavery suffrage.that is not true. slavery goes on today in many forms . white people shed their blood to free the slaves  as did Lincoln.a little girl in Africa today forced to sell her body to black men with aids for food for her family.wouldn't she be better off here in America. how many people in Africa have begged for help in chat rooms to come over here.maybe god had a purpose for bringing  them over .think about it every American black person born and raised here where would they be today. in Africa. it takes years to evolve just as it takes years if society to grow away from generations of learned behavior. i think maybe there was a plan as with the Israelites and the Egyptians.(the story of Joseph and his brothers).they say we evolved from Africa.if thats true.why am i white.tribes moved across the earth and evolved. humanity In its self is primitive.maybe the slave ships were a means to an end.was it right no.but it is my and my children's experience in this generation is that is blacks who are raciest. are your children stared down and in danger of being jumped on a daily BASIS...no but my white boys are.the n word has become gangsta.as the slang the woman used on Dr Phil's show.   my boys use it to great friends,as to say my buddy i got your back.  but they also use it to describe groups of black kids hanging on the corners trying ti intimidate people who walk buy. i don't like it nore do i like the c word for wemon.  they learned the word by the way they were treated on the streets of America by black African  people. its frustrating.i didn't enslave blacks ,i didn't rape and take advantage of myself,my kids didn't wait on corners for a black boy to jump.but if they did it would be a racial incident .when black youth jump whites its not racial?so i think .the lady had some points.why is it that we cant speak our minds but blacks can..women as a race were discriminated against and enslaved by husbands for a lot longer than any one era of social slavery .

09/12 The N-Word Debate

I really must say that I'm surprised at how uneducated people are who come onto this site saying that 'the N word' is racist. Here, I will clue you ALL in: the ORIGINAL defination: 'N****R (n, adj)--A POOR DIRT FARMER'. There is nothing in there specifically about blacks or any other race. Basically, a n****r is a trashy person, black, white, latino, asian... whatever.
And now that I have cleared that up, maybe Dr. Phil should redo the show over again, minus the most racist of all, PAUL MOONEY, so that people can actually have a discussion. There was no point in having anyone else there because of his dominating and talking over, completely disrespecting, viewpoints different from his own. To Paul Mooney, as well as any other idiots who actually use the defense that YOU were slaves: YOU were not slaves, your ancestors were. and you are no closer to your enslaved ancestors than i am to my slave-owning ancestors. therefore... GET OVER IT, GET OVER YOURSELVES. the world owes YOU nothing. If anything, the world owes your ancestors... but they're dead now so it's irrelevent. so GET OVER IT.

I take it you are black and thought you would be up on your black history.  So read the history books, the blacks from africa were sold, by their own people for money.  Nobody went and stole them, they were delivered to the U.S. by boat straight from Africa

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: dinknjen

I'm an American I can say whatever I want. Do you really think that just because they  are black that they have more rights than me. You are so wrong. My family has been through hell too. Many of my family members have fought in foreign wars for the rights that you people are so quick to destroy. How about stupid, is that worse than the N word because that is how  so many of you are acting! I have a step child by the way and if she misbehaves I will discipline them any way that myself and her mother and real father deem appropriate. THAT IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have a blessed day!
"Many of my family members have fought in foreign wars for the rights that you people are so quick to destroy"  Lol please let me know what foreign wars were fought for blacks to have more rights?  I'll wait............

Ask questions please

I loved this episode.  I love this topic and I hope you do a part 2. I love Paul Mooney and love that he speaks his mind no matter who is around. It frustrates me when people don't understand how real racism is and how it still exists. It frustrates me because it seems that  many white people form opinions about black people and black issues, yet they do not ask questions that would help them to better understand black people or black issues.  This tells me that they do not care to know and do not care to learn about black people. I love race. I love all races. I have friends of all races, yet I do not pretend to have in depth knowledge of any race besides my own (African American). I ask questions when I want to know more and I think people who do not understand black people or a "Black way of thinking" should do the same.  Peace and Love and please do a part 2.

the n-word should not be a debate.

i cannot fathom that some of the highly educated people on your show managed to find a way to rationalize using the most oppressive, derragoratory, and poisonous word in our culture. thank goodness this conversation was brought to the forefront, but why did it take so long? dr. phil, you question people who say one thing and live their life differently in regards to the n-word. you also question the double standard of black people saying vs. white people, or loving terms of the word vs. hate. THE WORD WAS DERIVED FROM HATE. HELLO! rappers using it in their music infuriates me as a white woman! anyone who recognizes their friend as such, is wrong! conversely, if a black person cuts me off in traffic, never does the n-word enter my mind. i think a huge reason that we have a lot of beautiful people walking around with chips on their shoulders, is due to this very word. how sad that there are black people out there that don't think as much about the ramifications of that disgusting word as i do, plain old midwestern white girl.

It's Thier Word

Okay this is how i look at the n-word. It's thier word they can use it however they want, the word was given to them by us. If it makes them feel better about the word to use it amongst themselves then so be it. Let me put it like this. Fat people, I use to be....We get a group of fat girls together and we all make fun of ourselves for being fat, have you ever noticed that fat people can make jokes about themselves being fat. But when you call us fat it hurts, because we know that there is intention behind it. Same with family nicknames, there might be a nickname that your family gave you that you tolerate, when they use it. But the moment someone else uses it your ready to knock them out. It's just life, get over it, thier word they can do whatever they want with it, the same way mexicans do, fat people do, prostitutes do, and everyone else in the world does. It's a word with power behind it. and even though there might not be any racisim behind it when a white person uses it, the fact that there are some who do want to use it means theres a little intention behind it. As much as we may hate it, we all have our groups, cliques, races....and we all CAN get along, but the truth of the matter is there are different cultures, different things that one culture may be able to do within a culture, but when another attempts to do the same thing, it just does not fit. Thanks for your time to read this.

What profit?

Quote From: maia2976

History has taught me that all races have at one time or another enslaved people in some form whether it be their OWN people or otherwise.  Let's not forget that there were Africans that profited from the selling of their own people.  Salvery isn't a 'white thing' - it's a human thing and it's wrong.  I don't want to be judged for anything I myself do not do much like you would not like to be judged next to a man who chooses criminal behavior.

"I have noticed a pattern in the way White think and act!"

Isn't it terrible when you hear any person say, "Those black people..."  Why should you be judged based on someone elses actions?  You don't want to be judged that way so why would you commit the same offense against me?  I'm white and apparently this means I am a supremisicst by the explaination you offer above.

Hmmm?  Let's all put our thinking caps on and rethink how we justify our own behaviors before pointing fingers at groups of others.

Where are these africans that profitted from the slave trade? Are they on the nasdaq dow jones or in the fortune 500? If you find them please let me know cause they owe me back wages for my great-great-great-great-great grandfather's work.
