This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

Find out what happened on the show.

Oh my gosh!

Quote From: xlntmommy

Yup, you're right..I mis-read an article. But everything else I wrote is dead on. That's the best you can do? One sentence? My bad for being wrong about our current gov. going to Iraq...which has nothing to do with Obama's inexperience and the N word..lol.

 I'll offer my post again.

Unreal. The original post I responded to claimed that as the reason to vote for the man. Period. Twist it how you want, the post is there in black and white (pardon the pun) and that was the sole reason cited, with the intent of voting soley based on that reason typed there as well. Nothing about issues or accomplishments. If you are going to try and defend Obama's record against McCain's, you're the one that needs to do the research. Did you research ACORN and Ayers? LOL. Probably not. And that Rev. White, he's a beauty too.. telling us we "deserved" 9/11? Come on.

During the debate Obama stated (saw it myself) that Healthcare is a "right'...that's Socialist pure and simple. Ask anyone who's been living in Canada or the UK for the past 5 yrs how they like their gov't sponsored healthcare. And it would bring about change alright..Calif has proven gov't heathcare will bankrupt the them..imagine that in all 50 states. The only reason we ever started taxing was for a combined military to protect from invasion. That's why we're 50 United States and not 50 separate countries. Everything else is gravy..your schools, all those lovely liberal programs, roads, etc. heck ever fire fighters who will come and use the most up to date high tech equipment to put your fire out if your house and possessions are threatened. (Ever been to europe? Asia? How about a 3rd world country? Hav you ever even been to Canada? Ever seen THIER "up to date" equipment? ANY of those countries I mentioned..ever seen what they offer their citizens? Didn't think so..) But I digrss..There was one reason and one reason alone for taxes. Military.

And if you actually had looked into Obamas plan, he will give $1000 in one hand and take $3000 with the other...and no not just from the person who makes $250K annually..read the fine print my dear..it's not a real plan at all. He will kill small business which WILL affect the economy. Read his plan. If your going to speak of it, don't just parrot a cadidates words, read it for yourself. I did. The man is  a LIAR, and I am scared of him like no other.

Those "big business" tax breaks you spoke of? Do you know how tax breaks really work? I suggest you look that up, too...larger corp's get them...but with a caveat...they hav to re-invest them back into hiring people..thus productivity goes up, and they wind up paying the same DOLLAR amount in taxes, so the gov't loses Nothing. Understand? NOTHING. Or very little, but they usually wind up paying more. It gives that money as a stimulus to creating more jobs. I could go on & on, but unless you know feduciary process, you won't get it. Don't believe everything that's pumped at you via the cathorade tube...media wants you to watch their (ads) shows and the mulolet wrapper wants you to buy their paper..

My senator Charlie Christ has been to Iraq four times. A senator who aspires to the job of Commander in Chief should hav vested interest long before 6 months before he hopes to take office.

OK..now to the stock market "fiasco". Your using some pretty broad terms here which you probably googled, but let me brief you real quick.

The stock market has NOTHING to do with anything you referenced. If you knew what you were talking about you'd know that the japanese and UK markets are getting hit hard as well, a result of GLOBAL impact. It's not just the US and it;s not Pres Bush. We will pay for the bad loans, but bailouts are nothing new. You are probably not old enough to remember Chrysler and Lockheed. The dollar amount is higher on this bailout (each time goes up) because our GNP (each year goes up) is the highest it's ever been as well.

Also the stock market will Never see a crash like in the Great Depresion because the reason for that was you could buy stocks on credit back then. Today you must fund 90% up front before purchase. There's a lot of other particulars, but I am not a typist...it takes a long time and quite frankly the INET is a huge time-burner for me...you answer 4 emails and an hour has gone by. I could spend 8 on this issue alone.

The election isn't about skin color. If Gen. Colin Powel were running I'd vote for him in a hearbeat. I am promoting Condoleeza Rice for 2012. I hope she runs. (Think of it, if you want someone to be "proud of", black and Woman at the same time). Plus she has a focused, in-depth knowledge of how the world operates. To say "Why would Barrack Obama go to Iraq" is a clear indication that you don't grasp the magnitude of the job as Commander in Chief. He's not running as a game-show host or media spokesman..he's taking the helm of The Most Powerful Nation on Earth. Obama has been a Senator who's responsibilitiesw are to his country. If he feels qualified enough to run the country, he should had invested of his knowledge of that job loong before 6 months ago.

Lastly, the Truth is you've never been affected by slavery. Period. Get off it. What a crock. The best your race of your generation can name about slavery is the history of it. It's been beaten to death and using it as a crutch is nothing more than drama-seeking behavior to shirk responsibility for your own emotional well-being. The only mature thing to do is to speak about the merits of what you HAV experienced in life. As I see it little girl, there's along way that you hav to go.

Now, go use that anger towards something good..like real information.

Good Luck.

You mention here that our President is taking the helm of the Most Powerful Nation on earth, yet you seemed to have forgotten that McCain is 72 years old and his pick for VP is a woman with no experience. Well, that scares the heck out of me! A soccer mom as the most powerful woman in the world, with no experience at all. Haven't you even thought about that at least once during this election?

my comment on the n word debate

this word makes me so mad, I am from nova Scotia and when i was in grade ten I moved to a new town and a new school  which most people attending the school were black, i grew up around black people all my life but the black people at this school automatically made u out to be racist if they did not  know you and drove you to the point that u wanted to call them the n word, but really i wasn’t going to say that t because then i would just be giving them what they wanted.  but besides the fact of that I don’t understand the reason that black people can go anywhere and say the n word and think its alright and as soon as someone of a different race, especially Caucasians they make it an extremely big deal and call us racist. i don’t understand why some black people (not saying all) still think that’s its okay for them to do and say anything they want because they must think we owe them something, when they cant get over they fact that most of these black people saying it weren’t even around when this went on and neither was mostly anybody these days. and the fact that on music videos they will bleep out the curse words but when black people say the n word they don’t bleep it out at all or if they do u can still tell that they are saying the word!. i don’t know why its right for them to say it and not anybody else, because if black people thought it was such a big deal for other people to say it then why would they even remotely use the word. and the fact that they have b.e.t .(black entertainment television) is so stupid because of the fact that all their shows are about black people and all of their commercials, and they say that we are racist. ha-ha we don’t have shows specifically for white people otherwise we would be racist wouldn’t we. so yeah i do know that their are plenty of racist white people in this world but these days its getting to the fact that black people are further more racist.

The other side of the world

I live in Aus. I was intersted in this epersod as I live in a country that in regard to the treatment of "Black People" is at least 1 of not 2 generation behind the USA.  I am only 31 and the last time that an Abroigonal (?Spelling) was shot leagerly was in 1978 (that is with in my life time!). the N word is often used to refer to them as well as others. I Find it shamful that WE (Astralians) had band traid with South Africa due to Apartite (?Spelling) yet wereactivly procticing this with in our own country.

some sad facts about Aus:

Abroigonal people were forsed to live on missions up to 15 year ago

Aboigonal children were forsably removed from there families up to 30 years a go

Abroigonal people were not recagnised as Human - and therefor have human Rights - till the 1970's

I know and am close frands with many aborigonal people and find it sad that so many of my country people dont know our history - espesaly the aberiganales.

PS I have dislexis so sorry about the spelling

n word in the world

Living in Australia the n word doesn't have the power It would in the rest of the world. However as children we were taught it was derogatory and not to use it. Now because of the prevalence of American culture worldwide it has come back into use. My nephews who listen to rap use it all the time. American culture good or bad is setting the example.
There are other words in english that have gone through the transformation from derogatory terms to terms of endearment and viceverca however I can see two differences. Firstly they rarely had the history of pain and suffering that the n word has, and secondly there was no restriction on who used the word. An example of this is the word Gay, From a word for happy, to a derogatory term, to an identifying term, to a term to express ones pride of sexuality, to a term for something that is lame, unwanted or inferior.

Absolute nonsense. The N word is alive and strong in Australia and has been long before Rap entered the mainstream consciousness or American (bad) culture was shoved down our throats by media and capitalists wanting us to consume, consume, consume. (Black) Indigenous Australians and South Sea Islander Australians are frequently referred to using the N word by other red-neck/devolved Australians. South Sea Islanders' ancestors were "black-birded", brought here, known as "Kanakas" to work as slaves in cane fields, same as Afro-American's ancestors. People from other countries are always commenting to me how aghast they are how Australians they meet expect them to hold the same racist views as they do. Even New Zealanders are more evolved. The person who wrote that the "n word doesn't have the power it would in the rest of the word" at best must live in a very insular uninformed bubble. Or socialises in some small clique where racism is not so rampant - there are places in Australia far less racist than others just as in the States. But (her) ignorance is still no excuse. It perpetuates a white-washed myth. For the record I am a white Australian. If I were black and wanted to raise myself up I definitely wouldn't embrace the poison "N" term of perpetrators and call myself a N. But there are black Australians who do, just like in the States. Other immigrant cultures have embraced other derogatory terms. 'Wog Boy' the movie is a prime example of how the Mediterranean - European cultures do the same dis-service to themselves and others as black Rappers and gangs swallowing poison, wearing it like a badge and pushing it back out into an already problematic (racist) world. It could be said that it is a person's choice how they refer to themselves. I think it shows a lack of political consciousness on the part of most - I don't think a certain percentage would embrace it if they fully understood the implications. In the past the N word at times had to be embraced by victims simply to protect themselves from all kinds of other harm - that isn't the case today - but we still have those who just will embrace it anyway, for all kinds of diverse reasons. The very stupid lawyer woman on the Dr Phil Show repulses me. She thinks she's hip and cool to call her mixed culture pals Ns and her white husband N. Possibly the fact she chose such a base profession, mixes in base legal circles, partly explains why her intelligence and conscience is so devolved and white-washed no matter the color of her skin. She is dumbing herself down without even connoting the offence she does to herself, victims/survivors of racism, our global village. And this is a woman we presume has had a political consciousness education in hand even if she didn't get one grass roots, on the streets. I'd also assume her poor attitude is because she has insanely embraced that bad American hype that says all of her nonsense is just howdy do in certain (elite) circles. The world is already way too devolved for her to act smart-ass about a serious topic like racism. But my presumably white Australian sister will be correct when she says her nephews use the N word all the time. Australians are so xenophobic the Government (maybe the new one will change this) expects immigrants to take an entry test that I expect a good quarter of Australians already resident/born/educated here would fail because their command of the English language is so abysmal. I live in the main street of a red neck regional 100,000 population Town (some like to SKITE, as Australians so much love to do, that it's Paradise). I spend every night listening to Australia's finest, its youth, going to and from Night Clubs unable to string a sentence together without using F, C, N, B etc etc, then starting the same old sentence all over again. PIcking fights with the Ns and the White Cs. And all so very proud of themselves. I wasn't impressed by the Mexican ex-pat without empathy who wanted black America to "get over it". I know it's a bit of a tough call to again ask the black people to do better than the white people, to have to stand up, yet again, taller and stronger, and throw out the N word for all time. But if you don't, if you don't keep defusing it, silencing it, raising your collective consciousness beyond using the language of your fouling conquerors and those who have taken their place without missing a beat, I consider you are just fuelling racists and racism, and little white nephews in Australia, when you don't need to. However it's also way past time those close to the little white nephews started to do some political consciousness raising of their own and stopped passively sanctioning devolution/racism. I know some people simply cannot be changed, they are like lemmings but that doesn't excuse serial fence-sitters especially since the problem, as I see it, from an Australian perspective, is getting worse not better. Some countries have at least attempted to clean up their N act. Australia isn't one of them.

From the view of yet another Aussie...

To begin with, in Australia we only just saw this episode yesterday, so if you were wondering why 'we' are all jumping on here to comment, that is why.

As an intro, I am Australian born female with Lebanese and Cuban heritage who has been the recipient of countless racial slurs throughout my short 20 years of life. However, aside from the recent arousal of the word "terrorist" being hissed generally to people of my colour (I know, ridiculous right?), I find it hard to say that there is a single word throughout history that can match the hatred and power of the 'N' word.

People on the show tried to justify their use of the word by saying it as a "term of endearment". However, the recipients or passers by who witness the use of this word may not feel the same way and may be utterly offended. Justify that.

As was mentioned, there are countless words to show love and affection so why use a word that has/is caused/causing so much pain to others. Even if used in private, and no matter what race you are, you are carrying this word like a disease throughout the years and people will continue to fall victim to it's sting.

Now, for the reason I came on here - The people in the audience that decided to stand on national television and tell Paul Mooney to "get over it" and I also think I heard in there somewhere that "HE didn't experience it", should simply walk themselves right into the ocean. I don't think I have ever been more fired up about that sort of plain ignorance in my life. Even South Park gave the issue more respect in their episode on the subject of the 'N-word' then this woman and her supporters did! Paul Mooney should have had more support when this idiot got on her high horse for her two minutes of fame. I know that if I were there I would have given her a piece of my mind and backed Mooney up... Telling him to get over it! Honestly.

Just when I thought it was all over, another big mouthed moron decides to stand up and tell Mooney that he is "the biggest racist in the room". Somebody stop me! THEN the audience applauds her! Well help me Rhonda! The audience (only those who jumped on this ridiculous bandwagon) that day should have realized that to other countries, like us, they represented a small portion of what America thinks of this issue and honestly, the opinions weren't all that admirable!

Next time that the audience member (or any of her supporters), looks in the mirror and complains of something superficial, or gets upset or angry over petrol prices or forgetting a grocery bag, I hope, I truly hope that someone will walk up to her and tell her to GET OVER IT! The things that people carry on about day to day are NOTHING compared to the issues surrounding the "N-word" and it's meaning/s.

How America is portrayed.......................

I just want to say that I'm very surprised to learn how America is looked upon by other countries. I had no idea that we were thought of as being racist. The truth is that most of us are not. But what is funny is every single time that I have stated on this message board that I do not judge others by the color of their skin I am called a liar by someone who is black. How can they say that? Do they personally know me? It's very frustrating for people to assume they know what goes on in my head and judge me for the color of my skin, white. This country in which I live is made up of every race imaginable, how many countries can say that? We are a melting pot! For those of you who look down at us, well, don't look at all if you don't like what you think you see. For what you see is what gets on the news, not the every day where we are able to get along. Gee, that is always left out. What you probably also don't see is the gangs, drugs, and automatic weapons that are a threat in America. I have to say that they are mostly black and Hispanic. I have nothing against either race but I do have something against gangs. Anyway, try not to judge us by what you see on the television as it does not represent the true American people. That would be judging us without even knowing us, is that really fair?

America is not the only country that is made up of every race imaginable as Australia is one also. Our goverment is proud of this and will pull it out every time imergration is mention. unforchently every country is like this I think. We (that is every one black, wite, asian, hispenic, latnio etc) need to learn to exceped each other on their deads not their skin couler, accent and coultral backgroulds - or sexuality, etc. One of the best experences that I have had was as a teen I grow up in a comunity with a large aboriganel poplation, I becam friends with many of them, to the point that most of them refered to me as "cuzz" (a term of affection and family used by aboriginals its an abrevation of cousen). I moved in my late teems to a diffrent town were the relationship between the aboriganals and whits was not very good. arfter living that for 6 months one of the aboriganles that I had meet (and had become friends with) was visiten relitives in the new town when we  ran into each other and fell streat into the paten of spech that we used in the Old town his friends cold him on letting me speek to him is that way - his anser was "why not she's family". His friends were VERY suprised at this answer. The even more amazing thing was that from then on I was seen as family by his relitivesin the new town.

The point of this story is that once I was seen as "family" their attertued changed and thay got to know ME and not my skin couler then friendships could be made. I wish is that this could hapen to us all.

As I have said befor I have dislexia and my spelling is bad - sorry but thats life

I am a white australian on the outside. However I am also aboriginal. I have also lived in every state of Australia, grew up in the bush and lived in every major city including Hobart. So my little insular bubble is called Ausralia. I've had racism from both black because I'm white and white because I'm aboriginal. I've been told all the Tasmanian Aboriginals were wiped out so I'm not one. Mostly I find people are just people and take me for who I am. But of course there will always be those who need to boost their ego by defaming others. In Australia I find they are usually gutless and back down if stood up to. Is it the same in the US? My nephews are teenagers so all my chastisement for their use of language falls on deaf ears. The gangsters have all their attention.
