This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

I agree with those who say the use of the N-word makes the user look stupid.  Regardless of the color of your skin or your station in life, if you use this word you sound stupid.  By the same token I do not believe that people of todays generations can possible expect or be expected to PAY FOR SINS THAT HAPPENENED NEARLY 150 YEARS AGO.

And to the guest on your show that was so angry and stated that 'he was drug here in chains from Africa', if he is so unhappy that he isn't in Africa maybe he should relocate.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

What was said about the black dog being ugly and the white dog being pretty was absolutely ridiculous. There are pretty people of every color and there are people that are ugly of every color - it is their poor attitude and actions that make them that way.

THOUGHTS ON TODAYS SHOW

i am only 17 years old, and i am very mature for my age, buht i have alot to say about this topic. i am half african american, and the use of the 'N-WORD' frustrates me. the term n***** is now probably the most offensive word in english. its degree of offensiveness has increased markedly in recent years. i think people are confused because nobody knows whether 'n***a' or 'n****r' is being overly used. 'n***a' is a slang term which means, a black person, a member of ANY dark-skinned people. n***a with an 'A' is not necessarliy meaning harm to anyone of color..it is used as a greeting now days, on the other hand 'n*****' is extremely disparaging & offensive..'n*****' means a person of ANY race or origin regarded as contempitible, inferior, ignorant. a victim of PREJUDICE similar to that suffered by blacks. a person who is economically, politically, or socially disenfranchised. the use of this word(s) is never going to just go away. its always going to be around. racism hasnt fanished, and i feel like this word(s) is just opening doors for anything to occur. for instance if a white person came up to me and said 'whats good my n***a??' i wouldnt take it offensivley because its a greeting just like 'how are you doing today??' its a way of communication, on the other hand if ANYONE OF ANY RACE, CREED, RELIGION.. came up to me and said. 'get away from me n***** '...i would take the extremely offensive..and there would be a problem..its a matter of how you use these words..& the meaning behind what your trying to say..

thats what i think!!

When is it ever going to be enough?

African americans always act like white people in America owe them something in life. From all of my experiances with african americans, it seems as though we need to walk on egg shells around them. If an african american has a view then everyone must listen but, if a white person has a view about the subject, we"just don't understand". This was an issue for quite some time ago. I am fully aware that there are many people still here on this planet who were around during that time but, it was a long time ago. I believe they need to see how far they truely have become. They have just as many oppertunities as white americans do. They have "african american" schools and clubs and government organizations for their race. If a white person had any of these things it would be shut down so quick! HEll, America has a chance to have an African american president!!!!!!!!! So I must ask, " When will it ever be enough?"

I waited all day to see this episode of Dr. Phil, unfortunately, I was unable to watch it in it's entirety. I was interested in seeing the different points of view on this topic. I quickly regretted the decision to watch as soon as Paul Mooney opened his mouth. He is one of the most racial and self-absorbed "experts" on the panel. I think he is a disgraceful and repulsive human being. I was shocked to hear him refer to himself as a "stolen African". Really? I could have sworn he was born in Louisiana, that's an ocean away from Africa my friend. I just cannot begin to explain my absolute detest for this man. I understand the need to have all sides of the discussion available but, this man is so distasteful and utterly stomach churning. I could not watch the entire show. I wanted to throw things at the television screen every time Paul Mooney spoke. I had to turn it off. That man does not belong on Dr. Phil's stage, where there is actually some class. Ugh. I hope I live the rest of my life without seeing that man or hearing his name again. I sincerely hope there isn't a follow-up for this show. Dr. Phil, please spare us.
I almost turned it off but kept hoping Dr.Phil  would step up to the plate he never DID I'm so disappointed with him

09/12 The N-Word Debate

What does whitey have to DO for these people? Every movie, commercial, judge, boss, person of authority, is now either black or Hispanic. Even on Dr. Phil's e-mail registation, the last catagory is white/caucasion.When do we quit coddling to every other race. We need to be American- not Asian/American, African/American.

I live in w palm beach fl. When you look thru the newly arrested police logs, how come there is 5 blacks for every white? We are NOT picking on them. Wake up, its not our fault!

What point are you trying to make? Your post has completely confused me.

So yes,  A LOT of movies, commecials, authority figures have a well rounded ethnic basis. We've come a long way in the sense as a country. Did you look more closely to make sure that email registration wasn't listed in alphabetical order?

I don't blame whites of this generation for slavery. I simply blame racists for being racist.

No need for any 'slang' words in the world today!

I will be happy and hopeful the day that this country and all of civilatization can live with one another and accept each other as they are!   I feel there is no need for words such as the 'N' word, 'F' word- used towards gays, or any type of word that gives a meaning other than what is the actual meaning in the dictionary!   I don't like or appreciate the fact that anyone nowadays think they reason to use such words.  Are we all not grown up adults to know to teach our kids better than that? And us as adults should know that this is what keeps all of the world always in constant feuding over ignorances that we all have created!

I agree

I agree with you here, If he feels he was forced or kidnapped then go back I am sure he will not be missed.

He was out of line today..

And it is racist if it is considered ok for blacks to use words that whites hardly ever use.. No one I know uses it..

I agree I will start a fund of 25 cents    I guess he does not know his history. His people sold them to the white folks. so there take that. go back if thats were you would rather be or get over it. You are very racist

Need the peace

I am white, you are black. Who cares??? I didn't drag you here to plow my fields. My ancestors did and If I could I would spit in their face and tell them how ignorant they are. I would not allow it! I personally do not use the n word. I don't know where I stand on this debate. I think a word is a word is a word. I just know that we all gotta stop hating each other for things that happened long long ago, that I myself and you, yourself had nothing to do with. If you are sincerly hurt about what whiteys did a very long time ago. You are free to go back to Africa. At the same time you are free to stay in America. You are an individual not a race. Figure out that not everybody is a hater and you will learn to forgive and forget.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

This lady is crazy.  Thats all she knows how could she say that BET is a double standard.  It was started because there weren't enough TV shows on that showed people that looked liked me.  I can't believe she had the audacity to say what the h.ll she just said.  Now I am truly out done by her statement.  Yes I agree with DR Phil when he says that there is a lack of exposure.  I totally agree.
