This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

Find out what happened on the show.

I am not willing to pay for ur ancesters

The problem is that the black people has a grip on a word.....lol

They have a grip on racial discrimination.............lol

They are a danger to themselves. They make the problem and hold on to it with all they are worth.

The ones that let go, have educations, have great jobs and have lives worth something.

I am not willing to pay for whatever their ancestors went through

I have ancestors that had hard times.................I am not willing to feel entitled by another human being to owe me anything because of it.

Get a grip,  Seems you know how to work the system in your favor in the USA, but if you were really smart, you would let this go and the best revenge is using the system to get ahead.

More privelages offered to the black, so go for it. Take what you think is due, but take the good with the bad as does all races in this country.

The " N " Word

I have a problem with blacks calling themselves  " African American" unless they actually came from Africa and became an American Citizen.  So...should i refer to myself as an American American? I was born and raised here along with alot of different races and we are " Americans" no matter what your race is if you were born here OR became an American Citizen.  So black Americans in my opinion are just that American minus the African part unless you actually came from Africa.

Now about the " N " word.  I agree there IS a double standard and some blacks are just as quick with the " white bitch or cracker" names for degrading a white person.  I grew up on a street full of english speaking polish people that people referred to them as " polocks". The street behind me that i hung out on was black....I am white.  I went to a school that had racial riots but had two black girls fighting each other and calling each other the " N" word.....so you talk about confusion!!!!  Lets just call ourselves Mutts and let it go at that.....LOL  I would love for race to be taken off any job application or anything eles for that matter.

I have laughed my butt off when one of my favorite comedians Linda Lapinelli  (who says she is Italian) has made fun of every race that was in her audience. I hate the fact that some black people are STILL blaming the white people of todays generations for what happened in the past. One of those people is Oprah!!!!  I won't watch her show anymore for that very reason.  Put history where it belongs....IN THE PAST and not hold it for what is happening NOW in the PRESENT. We weren't alive back then. We had NO CONTROL over Slavery because

Jesus loves the little children all the children of the world.....red and yellow, black and white they are precious in his sight.....Jesus loves the little children of the world.

I love all races and all people but i don't have to love your actions.

N Word = Slave

I admit I have used it at home a few times when my family has nagged me to my last nerve. "I am not your N..."

I would never say it about a person. I do not like hearing black people call each other that because they should think of themselves as better then that. Even if they do not mean slave.

I don't blame people for not being able to just "get over it". It's their legacy. My family has it's own set of problems they have passed down and I wouldn't know where to begin getting rid of them because they are part of me.

That word hurts no matter who says it or why. It just reinforces all the negative things it has ever meant.

This gives me a new reason to make sure I never say it again. My kids never knew it till they went to middle school. The youngest doesn't know it.

I think sometimes it gives the kids that are standing around doing nothing and calling each other that a subconscious reason to not achieve all they could.

I never want someone to feel like they are nothing but a slave. That is easily the darkest period in this countries history. We can't forget it, but we can move on and leave that word behind.

the word

i do not think any white person should say the word, i am a white woman who grew up in the projects and i would never say that word do to the pain thats behind the word. People shouldn't be so disrespectful and think about the feeling behind the word it's a painful thing for many poeple and for some one to say well they say it  so i can well as people say if they jump off a bridge will u????? just because black people feel the need to say the word to get over it doesn't mean everyone else should. the N word is  a word that most people should stay away from out in public and at home and even in there mind...

09/12 The N-Word Debate

I feel that we (blacks and whites) should be able to use any word as we please. This agrument is about respect. If a black person is offended by a white person using the N word, then  a white person should not use the word around them. I personally don't like when the word is used by white people and even some black people but that is me. I don't understand how the white lady that went to the mic said she calls her husband that, her justifaction doesn't make sense at all. And who cares what Al Sharpton has to say, in mind he is not tryin to help anyone just make everyone feel bad about who they are. But anyways... i don't see why white people care about black people using the word....

words have meaning

no matter how people say they are using the n-word as a friendly gesture, it is still wrong. The devil has a way of dressing things up to sound good, but in reality, it is still wrong. We must look at the definition of the word and see that it's true definition can not be changed. Everytime you call someone that word, you are speaking that into their spirit and what's sad is we are accepting it thinking it's okay because someone said it's a friendly gesture. We must be careful what we call people no matter who it is or what the word is.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: mralexander34

This lady is crazy.  Thats all she knows how could she say that BET is a double standard.  It was started because there weren't enough TV shows on that showed people that looked liked me.  I can't believe she had the audacity to say what the h.ll she just said.  Now I am truly out done by her statement.  Yes I agree with DR Phil when he says that there is a lack of exposure.  I totally agree.
I can understand what she is saying but I am listening with my eyes and ears wide open. If a white person decided to start a network and called it white entertainment, you may be a little offended. Some people are actually offended by black history month. What about white or asian history month? I think we need to open this up a bit and decide to be better people. I don't like to be called a wetback or any thing else but I've always been called that by blacks and whites. We need to stop hurting each other and quit teaching our kids to hate each other.

Nobody should be able to use it!

Do white people call each other cracker on a regular basis???  I live in Canada - perhaps I am blind or should I say deaf to society, but I have NEVER called another white person a cracker!  So WHY do black people call each other the N word?  If you can use it then EVERYBODY should be able to use it!  I am not a racist person by any means and would never use it, but if I were to use it it would not be in a 'racist' format. I agree with the question that was posed in a prior post - Who is really causing the division between racism....

Isn't telling  a white person they aren't entitled to use the N-word the same as a white person telling a black person they can't sit on a bench?  In principle it has the same effect!

Yes I feel the same way do you see that we have an all white tv channel no you dont ,but they have an all BLACK CHANNEL BET......This show could have not more from the truth then any I have ever seen...Mr.Mooney need to sweep his back door before he comes looking for TROUBLE eles where..We as white people have less rights then blacks they want to ALWAYS scream racits all the time no matter what to the food they eat to the store they go in.I know that because my mom was called racist over some solr lights she would not take back that a black lady had for many months well that is bull crap she tore them up and wated her money back and low and behold she got it because she was back.....
Was it because she was black or because she was right, I often buy things and don't use them right away. When I do decide to use them if they are defective, I think I have a right to return them.

A common sense based prospective.....

Alright, I got to watch the Dr. Phil show today, and WOW!  I wasn't prepared to see such a wide variety of emotion, it took me by surprise and in some ways angered me.

Some of you may say, "What does she know, she is from po-dunk middle America?"

The N-word should never be used, whether publically or privately. But at the same time you had better throw in the F-word, and any other derogatory based word. People that use those words regularly are only showing their ignorance or lack of common sense.

One board member brought up Slavery- it has been over for a really long time, I had nothing to do with it- do not treat me as though I did just because my skin is pale!

The African people were not the only ones suppressed; the Italians, Irish, and many more races were treated in a manner less than respectable.

Stop fighting within your culture, stop lowering yourselves to drug/alcohol addiction, pull yourselves up by the proverbial bootstrap and get on with life.

We all need to accept the fact that we live here in this great Country, and we will have to associate with differences- skin-size- or whatever else!
