This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

Find out what happened on the show.

unbelievable

It is a word just like many other words that are and can be offensive depending on tone and usage.

The guest who says he is a stolen/displaced slave obviously  never formed his on identity like the young lady  who  stood up and spoke.   I am treated very rudely by the majority of blacks i encounter while grocery shopping or passing in malls.  I look peple in the eye and speak when i pass them regardless of race.  More often than not nothing is said no eye contact  is made and I am ignored.  i continue to speak to people because that was how I was raised.  Do the right thing, treat people the way you want to be treated.  There a good people and bad people of all colors.  People need to keep this in mind.

I',m brunnette I would always pick a blonde doll over a brunnette doll as being the prettiest.  Many times people want to be what they aren't .  Is it possible we haven't accepted ourselves and taken responsibility for our on behaviors and that is why we are aslways trying to lay the blame somewhere else?

The best thing for our nation is to move forward by not beating a dead horse.   The Jews and American Indians have.  By the way I'm American Indian descent how mistreated were we/ they.

I think we should move forward by focusing on manners and values.  It is poor behaviors that bring us down.

exactly

Quote From: moonrose7187

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Theodore Roosevelt 1907

  •

He had it right....we are Americans...not black, white, red or yellow. If you dont give that then you are not really an American at heart.

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im black and i can agree

I have always been called too white. Trying to be white. Which has never been the case. Now that I am married to a white man and have inter-racial children it is even worse. I myself am not offended by the "n" word, maybe because I have used it myself and can understand why some use it in a derogatory way. I have recently moved to the south and the black people I have met here are quite ignorant. Not all but many!! And I have to my husband said the "n" word in reference to them. he gets more offended than I do about it because he thinks it should not be used.
Today on the show I found that the bald black guy was the most ignorant person on the show. Yes we all go through our struggles but we are not slaves we are not in that era. We as black people are slaves to ourselves because many do wait for a handout or for someone to do it for them. Go out and get what  you want for yourself legally. Then there will be no problems. We need to focus on ourselves instead of making this such a persistent problem.

double standards

Paul Mooney and anyone that thinks like he does is pathetic!!

Please if anyone thinks the way he does  I don't see anyone holding them here go back to Africa now. The very nation that he says brought him over here and put him in slavery has made him rich.

And we feel we need to let them vent and talk about the past that can not be changed. this show just fueled a lot of people and created a lot of anger amongst a lot of bloggers. I believe Slavery was awful, but why do i feel like they are making people pay the price now? what can we do about it? I prefer to live in the now

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: dixilicious18

I am a 19 year old white female,

I believe that this word can be used by whomever chooses to say it. There is freedom of speech in this country.. whether it be hey buddy or calling someone the N word. You don't have to be racists to use this word. I went to school with a girl who was of columbian decsent. why was it ok for her to say the N word not only to a black person but to another spanish person or even a white person? I think if you don't like the word then dont expose your self to the word! but others use it as another way of greeting someone and others use it in a derogatory way.. I am not afraid to admit I have used it in a derogatory way..

IF ITS OK FOR A BLACK PERSON OR SPANISH PERSON TO SAY THE N WORD THEN IT IS OK FOR A WHITE PERSON TO SAY THE N WORD

MAYBE IM OFFENDED WHEN BLACK PEOPLE REFER TO USE " WHITE PEOPLE" OR "CRACKER" BUT I DONT CARE BECAUSE I USE THE N WORD....

RACHELLE

It's never o.k to use the word, I think that blacks who use the word in public or stupid and they lack respect to thier own race. Don't get caught using that word towards the wrong black person honey.

Couldn't Agree More

Quote From: kg4ever

WOW....

1st off, I am an 18 yr old african american male.

I know I know.., not exactly the type of person you'd think would be wirting a message on the Dr. Phil show.., but I watched the show today and I was absolutely repulsed by some of the things I heard...! The N-Word in my opinion is horrible! its repulsive! and should not be used what-so-ever! I don't think that blacks as well as any other race should have the right to use this word! Its has nothing to do with endearment! Their is no way to smooth over racism.., the N-word and racism are the same thing they are tied together! there is no way to change the definiton of a word or how it is viewed! I don't care how close you are to someone of the opposite race and you use it in a "non derogative way"! thats bologni! the truth is this! you cannot change slavery! that word was used to humiliate my ancestors! it was used to put them and their spirits down! None of us no what its like to be beaten, raped, enslaved, moved from your home and to an unfamiliar place, and forced to do unbareable labor! and if you refused the penalty is death! There was no hope! there was no way of.. okay maybe a police officer will find me and i'll be okay! NO! Everyone in power stood for the same thing! IT WAS LAW! which was used to deminish hope for african americans! we werent viewed as people! we were viewed as animals! thats where the word comes from.., there is no way to change that! there is no way in hell I would ever accept it okay for a white, mexican, native, cuban.. whatever the race may be..., I would never be able to adapt to people using the word freely! i just couldnt! there is no good way of using this word! NO WAY!

I couldn't agree with you more on the N-Word Usage.  I don't think anyone should be able to use that word.  No matter what color, creed no one should be able to use that word or any other term of racism.

Thank You

Quote From: frau_eva

It seems like every time someone talks about race, a bunch of white people come out of the woodwork to say that black people use it and racism doesn't exist anymore anyway. I wonder if anyone on the board actually watched the episode since nearly everyone is saying, "Black people use it and it's not wrong, so why can't we?" even though everyone on the panel and every important black leader says IT'S NEVER OKAY. Are you deaf, or only hearing what justifies you continuing to act and think the way you do? Black people *gasp* are not a hive-mind with one monolithic opinion! You say not to blame white people for what happened a long time ago? First you have to not do stupid things because this one black dude you saw once did it and so now it must be okay for all black people ever. You may say you're not racist, but thinking that you can act like a fool because rappers=all black people makes you ignorant.

The racist audience in this episode was constantly using straw arguments like, "It's not Jim Crow anymore!" No one ever said that, yet they have to rely on this straw argument to distract from the fact that covert racism is very real in this country. No white person has a right to tell a black person how they are treated and how they should feel, just like no man has a right to tell me that I'm not treated like a second-class citizen as a woman and how I should react. Just like it's sexist and wrong for a man to say, "Well maybe if you didn't wear make-up, people wouldn't treat you like a slut," it's equally wrong to say, "Well maybe if you were less angry/more white/more like MY standard of people of color, then things like this wouldn't happen." It's blaming the victim, pure and simple.

I happen to be a white woman with a name that's commonly assumed to be black, and just the little I've seen of racism in my life has been appalling. Of course Ms. Buffy Wasp thinks racism doesn't exist, because no one ever calls does those things to her! And hearing the word cracker once when you flip across BET is, yes, wrong, but if that's all you've got to add to add then you are far-far-far too overpriviledged. Try not being able to get a job even if you are over-qualified, try being considered uglier because of your skin, or always followed around in stores. "Trying harder" and "being less angry" somehow doesn't solve these problems. You're only blaming the victim.

An audience member admitted that she gets these ideas about black people stealing her purse from the media constantly barraging her with the idea of black people are criminals, and you wonder why we have BET? Maybe people of color need a break from a media that despises them. This episode just made me ashamed to be white; I am so sick of having to hear priviledged white people make the same arguments without listening. Mooney was right.

I am a 23 year old Black female who was raised in the south. I have to admit I call my self a partial racist because I have no choice but to be. I have experienced racism plenty of times. Those who say racism doesn't exist have not ever been exposed or are choosing to be blind to it. I have white friends and I have nothing against white people, but if you are done wrong by whites and see how they turn on you when it comes down to you or their own, you have no choice but be skeptical of all whites. I give each person I meet the benefit of the doubt and build trust with them, but I will never fully trust a white person. I don't know which ones are genuine and which ones are undercover racist. I can't blame some people for not seeing racism because it is hiden from them. Racism STILL exist it is just done uncover now a days. Just like if you are raised rich with no worries you will never understand the struggles of a poor person. People see what they want to see. No one notices how many of the same cars are on the road until they are looking to buy it or has bought it. Then you say "There are alot of these cars on the road now" NO NO NO it was that way before you just weren't paying attention. Black people play the race card because they see it more often. So it easier to notice.

The woman in the audience said she pulls her purse closer to her because the black people where she is are gangsta. Well sweetie gangstas come in all colors. Like she said that is all she has seen. That is so true. I don't know about everyones local news, but in the south, the blacks that do wrong are all you see. White people commit the same crimes other races do but they will cover it up or have a brief story on it. If a black person does something it is flashed all over the news and picture is shown. Down here you know when a white person has committed a crime there is no picture and the story is very short. And don't believe everything they say on the television they are PEOPLE reporting it and some people are racist.

I am SO TIRED of white people saying "Get over it", "That is the past", and "Stop blaming everything on race". Well let me tell you all something. You can not get over something you experience on a constant bases, the past is not the past when people are still doing it, and RACE is the ISSUE so you have to

blame it on race. No one can comment on something they have never experience.

As for the Mexican woman in the audience, DON"T commit on something you know NOTHING about and do not understand.
