This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

Find out what happened on the show.

N-word

I don't believe that we should use the word due to the past history of this word and the hurt it brought out to our families and friends. I watch the show today and was a little disturbed by the ignorance from comedian Paul Mooney. I know he didn't mean any harm, but how he carried his self with the conversation and verbal language was very ignorant. I as a 22 yr old black women has learned to have a open-mind about things and truly believe that the past is the past.  I too have learn from my grandmother to not use the N-word, but at the same time i know she thinks to use it cause of the way she was raised with it.  As stated on the show, the word was made in the past as a racist word so we should just leave it in the past as is.

works both ways

As soon as blacks stop referring to whites as honkies, crackers, rednecks, etc., then they'll get the same respect in return.  Until then, you reap what you sow.

I have a retarded son.  I hear that word all the time to describe someone stupid.  I think with all the problems in this world, my retarded son is the smart one.  He loves almost everyone, with the exception of mean people.  Anyway, I don't care what color your skin is, we all bleed the same color.  We need to divorce the "N" word.

Love you all,

Sweething25

I agree. Sadly,we will not be able to stop people from using this word anymore than people using the word retarded. They are hurtful words and we all need to pay more attention to our words and actions that are hurtful to others.I also have a handicap daughter that is retarded and this hurts me deeply.

Racism

African American people are there own worst enemies. They segregate themselves and cry poverty. When the government gives them housing, education or welfare. Then they squander it away and ask for another handout. Its my opinion that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have done more to breed racism towards Afican Americans then help to abolish it. What is being done to stop gang violence, crime and teen pregnancy.  Everyday on the news you hear about drive by shootings, death and violence.  It starts in the home with parents taking responsability for the actions of their children. A skillful mariner didn't always sail in smooth seas.

ignorance

Quote From: charpier

My Grandmother was born in 1888.  We are of white/europen descent.  When I was a teenager, she explained to my siblings and I that she never wanted us to use the N- word.

She explained that, when she was a child it referred to unkempt, slovenly people.  She thought that people changed the meaning when they used it as a mispronunciation of the word Negro.

She said we would only show our ignorance to use it in such a way.

I agree ,that it only proves our ignorance and thoughtlessness when we say things that can be taken badly to anothers heart.I want to say from the very core of my heart and soul , I am ashamed of the past and dont want to be any part of it !! Hoping to love and be loved by all !!

09/12 The N-Word Debate

I just watched the show on the "N-word" I'm sorry but it just seems like black people love to harp about how racist white people are but did anyone see the hate in that black comedian? I think that black people do need to get over it and stop going back to slavery. ITS OVER!!! Everyone experiances some kind of racism or prejudice in there lifetime. It's not nice and no one likes it but you have to learn to get over it and stop being a baby about things. I feel like people need to stop using there race as a crutch. I'm just tired of hearing how black people dont get the same treatment as white people. My final statement GET OVER IT!!!

09/12 The N-Word Debate

I really think the N word is taken a little to far extreme.  Blacks have such a problem with it, then why dont they stop using it.  Its okay for them to use it, but got forbid anyone else to.  The man on stage commented that he was brought here as a slave.  You see, thats why this racism wont stop.  Its gettin brought down from generation to generation.  His ancesters might have been slaves, but he wasn't.  Thats just like my ancestors could have had slaves but i didn't.  I don't teach my children to hate because of color. I don't teach my children to hate because of what happened in the past.  This racism will never end as long as we keep instilling it in our children.  Yes i have problems with blacks, as also with other races including my own.  But that person as an individual has to do something to me in order for me to have a problem..I dont hate because of your race.  I am married to a black man.  and yes we have had to deal with a lot of obsticals pertaining to us.  I love him.  I just dont understand, why it keeps going on and on.  We as adults have to stop it.  Stop instilling it in our children....

Using the N word

I just want to say that I hate the N word, the B word, the C word and all words that put anybody down like that.  I feel it just shows ignorance and hatefulness.  When I hear someone call someone a word like the N word it makes me very upset.  Just my opinion.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: ohines

It seems to me that there isreverse racism going on. Blacks can use N***** in their songs and raps but Whites aren't supposed to say it. Where's the logic in that? If they can use it about themselves then they shouldn't get all in our faces when we or anyone else uses it too.

Besides....aren't there more important things to work on in this world of ours besides the use of a word?

You know what if a black person goes and jumps off a building are you going to do it? Didn't your mama teach to be a leader not a follow? For all the people that say blacks use the N-WORD on each other, if you took the time to listen to what is said you would know that blacks say ( what's up n***a not n****r) so get it right. I feel that if anybody wants to use the word in the negative way then you are the true and real meaning of the N-WORD. Look it up if you don't know what it mean. The world have changed whether you like it or not move on with the present and for those who wants to living in the past do something with your life. Go read a book or something so maybe you will become smarter then what you are know.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Where do I begin ? The "N" word should not be used by anyone at anytime in my opinion. The female attoeney on the show today said something along the lines of it is only the power you give to the word or any words for that matter.I couldn't believe,an educated woman, said such !!! The power you give !! The word, all words have power. The world was created by words. The atmosphere we live in is energised by words. Do you not realise that you can feel the negative energy when you walk into a room after someone has had an argument ?? Words are powerful.

With that said,I'd like to say a few things about the 'Doll Test' that was talked about. The reason that children percieve the non-white doll as being ugly could very well be because of the power of that ugly word.If a child hears that word over and over again, then it is ingrained in their little minds that is ugly.Childrens minds are like sponges and they soak up everything around them.Good, bad and everything in between. It doesn't matter if they hear their parents, caregivers or the guy in the grocery store use the word,if the child knows the meaning of the word,by our society, then the child knows it's a bad word.I believe that the word can not be used without some sort of negative meaning with it.Even if you are using it privately or calling your friends that, the word is so negative that a postive spin can not be put on it.

If I had children,I would do everything in my power to keep them from hearing that word, which would be a monumental task in itself considering how much it is used in the media, especially the music that the world is listening to.I grew up in the south and was never alloweed to say that word, not even among family and friends. It is an ugly, ugly word that has so much power on its own, that it can seperate a nation. The word is full of hate and ignorance and has been used to express such for decades. When someone uses the word,it only shows whats in their heart and I mean when anyone, under any circumstance uses that word.

I know that the word will continue to be used and debated all of our lives.I applaud the people that are in the public eye that have determined not to use the word. That is huge and should be applauded.I believe that we as Americans,no matter what race we are, should make the same vow,and discontinue the use of such a foul word.My hope is that all slang words that reference a race would stop being used.Is the world that we live in not filled with enough negative things without using words that are filled with hate?

If you want to see change in the world, start with yourself and your home.Clean up where you are.Don't use negative words or allow them to be used in your home.Don't allow your children to listen to garbage or to watch it on television. We can not change the world if we can't change ourselves.
