This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

Find out what happened on the show.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: ryeclan

It seems to me that when there is conflict with an African American and a white person that the white person gets attacked that they are racist. Could it be the other way around? Just wondering if anyone else feels this way?
What bothers me are shows like the Jefferson's.He is on one channel talking about crackers, whiteiee's, and so on, and that is just suppose to be funny. Now a white show on another channel say something about colored, blacks, or N######, and they are cut off the air. WHAT IS THE DIFFERANCE???? We really don't know what to call blacks anymore. It seems that every name the blacks settle on is bad when the white people use it. We should get the same respect from black people , as they should have from us. I call you the N word, and you call me a cracker, whiteiee. You call me a whiteiee, cracker, and I call you the N word. Let's respect each other, and not call any names.

The N Word

I grew up in wv where we only had 1 black person in our school; where there was one community close by that most of the blacks lived; where I was threatened by family to be disowned if I even looked at a black person in a romantic way. I married a puerto rican and we have to boys that look like me--pale white. I have taught my children from itty-bitty that God made everyone the same inside and we're all differant on the outside. I think for ANYONE to use the  N word is a disgrace to us as the human race. We all have the human desire to want to be accepted--can't we just accept each other without the name calling. I don't allow my boys to call anyone names.  Even used as a term of endearment to someone can cause ill-feelings. In my opinion it's a term of disrespect--and who wants to be disrespected?!!!

09/12 The N-Word Debate

It very much upset me when the gentle man on your show said he was brouhgt here as a slave. Then he became very angry screaming that his people were brought here in chains. We all know that is true.My people were American Indians. Does he realize the horror that they went thru? They had everything taken from them.To this day they are still treated poorly. We would all do well to remember "our people"were not the only ones who suffered greatly at the hands of others. It is time we let go of the past and remember we are all of the HUMAN RACE before we are anything else.

to be fair,

Quote From: nlambert21

Let me start off by saying that I am not a racist person, however the black people are always talking about equal rights and what not, so let me ask something why is it alright that the black people have their own black entertainment channel on tv, they have their own black beauty pageants, their own black college foundations etc..   If we started making white only channels, college foundations, pageants and stuff we would be considered racist and not treating blacks and whites equally so why is it alright for them to. It seems to me that the blacks are what is racist now days. Also what is up with calling blacks "african americans" and not calling whites "caucasian". African blacks are completely different from the blacks here in the US. They are very kind and very appreciative of what they have and receive as gifts where as MOST of the blacks here think that everything is owed to them because of what has happened in the past. Let it go. I think that the persons character and behavior and actions is what makes them a N, whether they are white, black, brown, blue. Blacks also have the highest percentage of people in jail and the highest number who is on welfare, so maybe once they start contributing to society instead of take, take take, then that is when society will start looking at them as someone who contributes instead of always taking. It just annoys me for black people to say that we are the ones who are racist when I think that it is the other way around.
actually, youre the definition of racism in america today.

The "N" word

Dr. Phil, I'm a 59year old black female. My mother was half white, father was black.Grandmother on my mother's side was white and grandfather was black. I was taught to respect everyone and to treat pl. as I would want to be treated.I went to school with white and black and I did not experience racism at all.

I do not like the N word, I feel that it is degrading. I would never use that word or any other word that would afend someone. In some of your old dictionaries it had the N word in it, and it meant, vulgar, nasty, and uncoof. Looked in my newer dictionary and it is not in there. Thank God they took it out! If you look in the Bible, it says that every idle word will be judged. When I stand befor the Master, I want Him to be very please with me, and say well done my good and faithful servant !It's all about loving your neighbor as you love youself.  Thank you!

The Video I watched only gave Me a Mixed Message with what Mooney said He wanted & I think if Mooney really Dose NOT want the N Word Used he would NOT have it used by Himself Nor his Friends & Post it on MySpace,You Can't have it both way's.

As soon as blacks stop referring to whites as honkies, crackers, rednecks, etc., then they'll get the same respect in return.  Until then, you reap what you sow.
Where the hell u think those words come from, it came out of whitey calling blacks the n-word, coon and spook...

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: manofgoods

I really think that people whoever uses the N-word (no matter what race you are) is really disgraceful & it disrespects African-Americans. Rappers, etc., shouldn't even use the N-word in the first place in their music lyrics. That's why whenever I listen to rap, etc., I usually go for the Edited versions of it, whatever it comes from buying CD's, or downloads. Plus we wonder why kids are saying things that they shouldn't be saying. It's 2008 now, soon to be 2009.

And I'm a African-American man myself (I'm only 26 years of age). It's time for this world to grow up, & quit living in the past.

agree completely

N-ey word debate

Calling N-ey one a derogatory name is not acceptable. It's not a matter of just the N word, it's a matter of all words that cause distress to a person. I personally think that words like, IDIOT, MORON, JERK, STUPID, MINDLESS FOOL and any other name that belittles a person is just not acceptable. I do live in the real world but don't believe in cutting folks to ribbons just because of  intense emotions that might go out of control.

I worked as an EMT in a large city back in the 1980's. One hot night my partner and I were called into a heavily populated black area. As we took the patient out of the apartment building, out of the darkness came a deep voice.."HONKEY" was what that voice spoke. I was not feeling too safe however, it was my job to take this sick person to the hospital. Color wasn't important. All blood is red, flesh is the same color under the skin. But...I know what being called a derogatory name is like and I was not happy with it considering the dangerous situation I was in at that moment. It was demeaning as is the N word.

I live in a very diverse town. I believe that all folks (whatever color or ethenticity)  have the right to a good life, education and a safe environment.

I can remember the first time I heard one black man call out to another one..."Hey N"~!  I have to admit, my jaw dropped~! I had been taught that it wasn't a good name to call someone and that I could get killed for it or at least get very very hurt~! But to hear that word called out like that really surprised me. I'm not that foolish to think it's not happening but to have it done so publicly was unbelievable to me. I despise racism in any form.  There is no place in this world for the N word~!!!!

Not rocket science people!!!

I grew up in the Sixties and Seventies and back in the day when the "N" word was very powerful in making racial comments on political decisions such as segragation in the south and the Civil Rights movement. All of our steps to equality and non-racial actions is being threatened by our attitudes today. Living day to day not feeling like your offending someone by what you say has become an everyday chore like washing dishes. Has it come full circle??? Have we not progressed?? Have we still not realized that we live in a world with different cultures and different skin tones?? I see alot of hatred that still exists, and it's coming from all races. Muslim, Jewish, Blacks, Whites, Native Americans, Asians...........we all have our own personal differences, culture and habits of life. Why then do we end up having issues with each other and blame them on race. It's not race that's the problem, it ourselves...we need to deal with our own issues and stop blaming race when it comes to our issues. It's not rocket science people, love yourself and live life to the fullest, stop worrying about your neighbor and the color of his skin. No race is more beautiful than the other, we are all beautiful and have lots to give this world. Stop using distasteful words to make yourself feel domenent over another race. The "N" word is one word that is distasteful, I could think of more, but I'm too much of a lady to say them. Think twice before you speak, that's a human thing regardless of your race. Thank you
