This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

Reverse Racism

I've noticed that lots of people are trying to stop using the N word but what about reverse racism?  There is a Black Entertainment Television channel but if we had a White Entertainment Television then we would be racist, right?

The N-Word Debate

The N-Word I believe evolved from the spanish work for color which is Negro.  This word means black.  I truely believe that it was white folks which gave the shorter word in the south.  I feel in my heart that this word belongs with the rest of profanity, such as m-f____er, and the rest.  I am a born again Mormon and I owe a great deal to a black man because a black man sheilded my father and took  schreapnel and saved my father's life during the WWII.  I do not feel that the N-Word should be used by anyone, and using such names only degrades and belittles the person who says it.

what about the R-word?

There is another civil rights issue that is long overlooked. In fact I dare say it's more about human rights.
People with intellectual disabilities are standing up against use of the R-word.
Dr. Phil you need to have a follow-up on this topic! BAN the R-WORD TOO!

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: wscheetz

I too have often thought this.  I personally think the N word is a terrible word and should not be used by any race.  I have even asked a couple of my african-american friends why it is o.k. for them to refer to each with N word; however, if any other race uses it, offense is taken to it.  I was informed that it is another slang word that they use like "bro", "brother", etc.  I just think the N word really causes too much trouble and forms an unnecessary division among races.  So in that, I must ask myself who is actually causing the division?!
I am watching this show and personally I feel that it is becoming crazy.  More african americans are using the race card now more than ever. It was so long ago it is OVER  african americans keep bringing the sore subject up again and again pouring more salt into the wounds. We also have a victory over Japan day , you do not see Japan raising a bunch of issues over things we had nothing to do with it was not our generation , our parents  generation it was our ancestors just like theres.... Will someone please bring this up. The white people are getting harrassed by this it seems daily.

Don't Be Hurtful Toward Even One Person

I try not to hurt people. My parents taught me that and I taught my child that. If I believe that I will hurt one person by using a word - no matter what it is - that MAY be hurtful, or has hurt others, I'm not going to use it. The people who believe and act as I try to do will not have an issue and the word will disappear eventually in common jargon. Unfortunately I don't believe it will ever disappear in communities where hate is practiced. It seems so simple but as I listen to the word being debated on the show this afternoon, I see that it's too high charged still to have such a simple answer. Maybe if we work toward not being hurtful, and toward accepting everyone (that is also an issue here) at some point we'll get to an agreement. I hope it's in my lifetime.

Let's get real

Ok! I have seen the show and I am pissed off to the fullest. I don't care who are, where you come from, or how you live. The N-WORD should never be used no matter what. The ancestors of white people did wrong by stealing the African Americans from Africa. They degraded them by call them the N-Word. If you look in the dictionary the N-WORD has a meaning of being an ignorant person. We have come along way from then and we should stand together as one. I don’t care if you put er on the end of the N-WORD or ia on the N-Word you are still being ignorant. That is why we are constantly at war with others because our ancestors were both thieves and slave owners, or they were victims because of others. This country makes no since what so ever to me. I am an American born and raised in NY. I have seen what our forefathers caused, I have felt the pain of slaves, I see how our government is trying to help others and keep America safe.

If the government back then had the balls that they have now we would not be discussing the N-WORD, we would not the main target of others because of the government and we would not be killing each other of a word that has no more over anyone. So if you are to blame anyone whether they are African American, White, Asian, Latin, Irish, Italian, Jewish or Arabic. (etc) we should blame our  “government now and then”

Best wishes,

Kelly M.

The N word that should be forgotten

Not even blacks should say it.  Just don't say it and forget it was ever a word.   But I wonder if the blacks want to be same as everyone in the USA, then why do they want to be called Black African American when  they were born in the USA  not Africa! !    By calling them Black African American,  that makes them different!  What do they want?  My parents were born in Australia and I do not call myself  Australian-American!
