This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

Find out what happened on the show.

Racism -

I have never experienced racism, BUT  think most of these people are causing their own racism.

I got so upset  trying to write what I think that I give up.............

An African American is someone who is born in Africa and immigarted to America

Their children born here are "AMERICANS'  they are not Africans.....Anyone born in America is an AMERICAN....Where do they get  off calling themselves Africans

I agree they should not be called the "N" word but .......we arent even allowed to call them Black or Brown...........even though they printed their own magazine called "EBONY"..............we cant call them ebony americans either.....

Should I be called a English-Scotch-Irish American because my great grandparents came from there?
It  is disgusting to   see these so called "African Americans"  cause so much chaos trying to make us racist..when they are the ones who are the racist.

It's just wrong

Quote From: dbogue

I think the N-word should be treated the same as the F-word. They are bad for everyone. No one should use them. There is no reason to use them. They just hurt .
Amen to that! And don't forget the C-word, too.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: alyssasmommy1

I completely agree. Slavery was a long time ago. Why are the white people paying for something our ancestors did along time ago, that was then..this is now. Every race has been racist towards one another. People need to get over it. Yes words do hurt at time..but its just a word. Im white and I dont use that word. And im not going to raise my daughter or my unborn son to be that way. Color of skin doesnt matter. Stop blaming every other race for racism. Black people are just as racist as any other race. There is a big difference between the N-word and black. Some people are not aware of this. They just assume that N-word associates to a black person. So not true. The N word is  never going to go away. Although we can teach our children and there children that its not a very kind word to say. But we have freedom of speech, the N-word will continued to be used whether anyone likes it or not. You can take it as a racial comment or just let it go. Its up to you!!
what you are missing is what happened after slavery was abolished i remember the south and the water hoses and the dogs and the lynchings ...by the way i am white I think that you are way off base. I hear people use that word TODAY i hear them say things that should, but dont make them blush .I am hearing this young girl speak now and its obvious how far we have to go . well all i can say is those of you who use it are NOT welcomed in my home or in my life . I have no use for ignorance and lifes too short

Collect Money Dr. Phil

Dr. Phil please start a fund to send Paul Mooney back to Africa. He stated he was forced to be in America so I think several folks would help him out and contribute to a fund to send him back to a place he feels as his home. Apparently he doesn't make much money as a comedian, if he did and he feels he was forced to be here, he would already have gone to where ever he feels home is. No wonder people aren't bonding any better when you have people with his attitude!

People of color can use the N-Word but not any other race of people. Sounds racist to me.

I've noticed that lots of people are trying to stop using the N word but what about reverse racism?  There is a Black Entertainment Television channel but if we had a White Entertainment Television then we would be racist, right?
I agree completely,  I am getting disgusted and it makes me sick that they keep telling us we are racists.  They had better take a look at themselves.

If you dont want anyone else saying it...Then dont use it yourself!!!

Like i said...Dont call eachother names..that solves the problem.

Why is it okay for black people to use it and not everyone else? I thought you guys were fighting for equality...or it is equality when its convienient for you.

The N-word

I would like to first state that I do understand how racism can effect people.  But over the years I am becoming numb to the plight of African-Americans.   We are bombarded by this issue on a daily basis.  I do believe that Dr. Phil has had at least two shows on this issue.  As a Native-American I think that it is time to look at what is a Real issue.  I think that everyone is a little racist towards Native-Americans.  In some instances it is to the point that people don't even talk about it or avoid it on purpose.  Most people think that we just run around with feathers in our hair and work at casinos.  There isn't a Holiday to celebrate the destruction of Africans or raciest mascots, and African-Americans still have a "home land".   Native-Americans don't, our country was taken from us.  I know that some of my views may be arguable, but I think that it is necessary to be blunt because it seems that the country is collectively ignoring the issue.  My people are more then a punch-line of a joke or holiday decorations.  My people were almost completely  wiped out.  I think that someone needs to look at the reservations and other aspects of life  and show that on daytime t.v. so that Americans can see the truth.  It seems that in this case, "Ignorance is bliss".
