This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

The N Word

Boy, the female audience member got it right when she accused Paul Mooney of being the biggest racist in the room!  This man is not only a racist but just so full of hate and loathing.  He makes Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and David Duke look like choir boys.  How this man ever gained the right to have this public platform is beyond belief!!!  One can only hope he develops an extremely severe case of laryngitis that lasts the rest of his life!

SHE DIDNT LOOK LIKE A FOOL AT ALL.WHATS THE DIFFERENCE, BLACKS USE IT ALL THE TIME.WHAT GIVES THEM THE RIGHT TO USE IT AND NOT US.IM WHITE AND I GET CALLED IT ALL THE TIME.SO IF ITS A BLACK THING WHY AM I BEING CALLED IT.AND BIG DEAL YOUR ITALIAN.SO WHAT.SO IM WHITE CONGRATS ON BEING ITIALIAN
She did look like a fool!  If you do not like being called that word then it is up to you let tell the person or people to stop calling you that word.  Blacks use among each other as a term of endearment, which you probably do not know what it means.  Check your history to see where the word came from and then you will see how much of a fool she is.

THIS GUY IS JUST CRAZY.I WOULD'NT BE SCARED BUT I THINK YOUR RIGHT HES NUTS.
I agree with you. I would love to stick Paul Mooney and Andrew Dice Clay in a fight cage together and let them tear each other up. In my opinion, Paul Mooney and Andrew Dice Clay give a bad name to comedians and are despicable representations of both races. Not as a white woman, or a black woman, but as an American, I am ASHAMED!

09/12 The N-Word Debate

i can't believe that in this year of 2008, there is still such ignorance about people.  People are people, we are who we are, you do not choose your race, hair color, eye color.   I do not teach my children to give things that we do not choose any weight in who people are.   Judgement is part of life whether we choose to do so consciously or not,  but i choose not to judge on the things we don't choose, skin, sex, sexual orientation, etc.  If you choose to do wrong instead of right, if you choose the easy way out, just when it gets hard i will judge accordingly.   There are good and bad in all sizes, colors, sexual orientations, and genders.  The only way that things can ever change is by action.  You cannot sit, do the same thing day after day and expect someone else to change the world, or even your life.  YOU MUST ACT.   I try,  and sometimes it's hard, to live by these words "Be the change you wish to see in the world"   So don't tell me how to change or what to change unless you are leading the way.   Respect yourself, and respect others, we do not choose how we look or where we came from, but we do control where we go and how we get there!

The N word?

Having worked in Corporate American for 30 years, I worked along side many, many African-Americans.  I considered them people, not African Americans.  I respected those that worked hard, were creative, educated and articulate.  Never did a person's color influence my level of respect.  Never did the N word cross my mind.  On the other hand, working for an international company, there is a lot of minority recruiting.  I would guess that in the past 5 years the hiring ratio was 20% white and 80% black or other minority.  Is that right?  I can assure you that this is this type of recruiting that appears to give any minority is what brings out resentment in the professional white community.  It's no win for all.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: ryeclan

It seems to me that when there is conflict with an African American and a white person that the white person gets attacked that they are racist. Could it be the other way around? Just wondering if anyone else feels this way?
Please, I love the fact that white people are so quick to call reverse racism.  I have been dealing with white peoples racism all my life in Charleston, SC.  I previously told myself forgive and forget, it's not all white people that are that way.  But my daily experiences prove me wrong.  After my most recent racist encounters with white people I understand that why there are blacks that hate white people and they should.  I recently moved into an apartment after spending months searching for an apartment in a safe, racially diverse neighborhood. I thought I found it, but I couldn't have been more wrong.  I soon discovered that the leasing office refused to rent me an apartment in certain areas, I later discovered that all white people lived on those sides.  I had to contact the vice president of the company to get an apartment, and I can kick myself for moving in.  My white neighbors where nasty and hateful.  One of the white ladies that lived upstairs from me would literally run if she saw me or not come down the stairs when I was going in or coming out of my apartment.  Thankfully they all moved out shortly after I moved in, which was wonderful, but then all the apartments were filled with blacks in my area.  So now this section is the new black side.  When I was younger and heard blacks, especially older blacks, say things that I thought was not very nice or even true about white people I would speak against it.  But never again.  when my lease is up I'm moving to a majority black city, Atlanta, where I know I can succeed and live in nice areas, get a job, go out and enjoy myself without dealing with hateful white people that are always quick to call reverse racism, but are some of the most biggoted people in the world.  No, I don't want to be around white people because I hate them, I just don't want to be treated badly or be around people that don't want to be around me based on their ignorant misconceptions about who I am and I thought that is what I was doing when I selected an apartment in what appeared to be a mixed neighborhood.  I have worked hard all my life, I'm about to recieve my Masters degree in Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina with a perfect 4.0 GPA and I have always treated everyone, regardless of race with respect, but (as hard as it is for white people to believe) blacks are humans and we do have feelings and the treatment we receive from whites do have damaging and hurtful impacts.  I have no desire to discriminate or treat any group of people bad, but I will do my best to segregate myself from whites b/c there is but so much I can take and this was the last straw. Plus, if there are so many non-racists whites out there, like so many of you claim, why does this type of discrimination exist.

All Blacks do not use the N-Word. How do you suggest blacks go about stopping the nations entire black population from saying it? Your logic is flawed.
