This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

Find out what happened on the show.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: manhattanmati

Dear Dr. Phil

I have never used the N word nor do I condone the use of this word.  It bothers me to hear the African Americans use it towards each other.

However, concerning the comments about BET.  My 27 year old child worked at BET in NYC, my child was the only Caucasian in the NYC office.  My child was subjected daily hearing the "N" word,a word they had been taught since childhood was a hateful name to use.  They were also subjected to listening to disparging remarks about "whites".   As the only "white" person on the whole floor my child was unable to assimilate with co-workers as it was felt that they would not or could not be accepted or have to defend being "white".

The truth is that while BET is owned by VIACOM  they do NOTHING to promote "sensitivity training" for their employees specifically at their NYC office which is predominately african american.  Subsequently my child left the job, without prospect of other employment, because it was believed that it could be determental to the job they were hire to do and possibly to their well being to complain about the remarks.

My child also believed that this "network" is not presenting the best programming for African Americans, but promoting the mind set that continues to separate people from learning from each other and respecting people for their character not their race.

How much of BET have you watched?  Watch it for a day or two before you pass judgement.  And who is your son to say what he thinks we need to watch as black people.  There was not many TV shows on regular TV that showed black people until the Cosby Show.  When BET came about it was the first time I had seen blacks in music.  MTV hardly ever played anyone maybe Michael Jackson or Prince.  Thank you BET for exposing me to music that I have fallen in love with.  Don't get me wrong..It's equal opprotunity over here I like all things and all types of music

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: quietstorm

"My younger brother fights for this man to have freedom here" God bless your brother and I have nothing but respect for what he is doing. However, if you really still think this war is about "our freedom" or "Iraqi freedom" then it is YOU that needs to WAKE UP.....
If not for our freedom then what the hell are all of his friends dying for? He fights for THIS COUNTRY and what it stands for. I may not agree with it all and you may not either, but my point is that many people have died for the freedoms that we take for granted. Some people don't like rap music, but would it be a just statement to say that just because I don't like it that you can't listen to it. Think about that. When push comes to shove all ethnic groups will stick with their own. I have a diversity of ethnic groups in the people that I call friends, but when I am the only white person in the group I am made to feel like the minority. That is human nature. As far as the N word, I have been called much worse! I am proud to be white, and if you are black then you should be proud to be black. Maybe you should look at our declaration of independence before making a stink about what we can and can't say!!!!

fridays episode about the n word

I'm only si xteen years old and i have a very big opinion on this word.

the other day i was talking to my dad that dr.phil was on today and that it looked really intense and i couldn't wait to watch it. do you know what he said to me?

"What? The one about saying N*****?" I was speecheless. I just looked at him...jaw dropped and wide eyes. i couldn't believe he said in front of me. icoulnd't believe he said that at all.

that word when i hear it makes me sick.

just the sound of it is disrepectful and insulting. it's a disgusting word that never should have been said or made up.

white people get mad and say that it's so hypocritical because blacks call us cracekers!!! COME ON!!!

does cracker really hurt peoples feelings? no. it doesn't . say cracker and then say the n word. which one sounds worse? i know and you should know too. that word is disgusting and makes me sick. i hate that word and think that it should never be used.

even when people say ot to a group of their friends as a joke..it's still wrong.  it's hurtful and disrespecful and disgusting.

how can people feel ok with themselves when they say that? i have never said that word in my life and  i never will.

that word is a disgrace to everyone and everyone shoud be ashamed of themselves for using it.

i'm not trying to put down those of you who use it...i mean we all have freedom of speech...but don't be proud of it and don't flaunt it. it's not something to proud of that you can say it.

I had a co-worker take me the wrong way!!

I was working at a nursing at the time of this incident. We were all standing around the nurses station and we were talking about braiding hair. I am a white/female. I blurted out "I wanna know how you guys get your hair braided so close to your head", one of the girls I worked with is African-American she turned to me and said "That sounded to me like a racial comment to me". I said "That wasn't meant to be racial and for her not to be calling me that, that I had lost a bi-racial baby due to a miscarrige". When I told her that she changed her tune towards me and apologized to me. The rest of my time working with her she seemed to get closer to me after that incident.

The new face of America

I grew up with a Cop for a dad, who used all slang terms, for all kinds, particularly black people.  My sweet grandmother may of uttered it quietly about some of her renters.  My grandfather never did, even when a black man that used to work for him, murdered his daughter.

I am married to a cop, who occasionally uses the word and It makes my skin crawl.

I have a 5month old grand daughter and a 6week old grandson.  Both have black fathers.  Neither daughter has chosen to get married.  We don't know what they are besides a growing population of a blend of cultures just like my German grandfather and my Irish grandmother.  These babies are beautiful and, much like their mothers and grandparents, mutts.  Irish, Scotch Irish, German, French, English, Danish, Cherokee and now black too.  They are the face of our nation.  It is my hope that they will do as their mothers did.  Accept people for who they are, watch their mouths, run if they feel they are in danger and apologize later if they were not and it offended.  I will teach them that this word is an old, offensive word that nobody uses any more unless they are mean, nasty or unhappy people.

I believe using the N word is just as grating as using many other words that are meant to degrade.  It should go right there with the nastiest of swear words.

I believe that we can't have a whole nation as long as we are constantly trying to set aside a chunk of the population as an exception to the whole.

I prefer the word ethnicity, because there is one race, the human race.  If not, what is the other race?  Alien?

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: mrgrt56

I don't understand how this man gained so much fame and respect, when he rose to those by lying and perpetrating a fraud?  Why is it okay that the African Americans can spew hatred about anyone and none of them are taken to task? Did the media go balistic and criticize Kanye West after his outburst on TV after hurricaine Katrina? No, they replayed  it as a condemnation of the Bush administration?  An African American child calling a white overweight child fat is as hurtful to the white child as the "N" word to the African American. I doubt if any uproar would be made about the child being called fat.

Black people were dicriminated against because of the color of their skin. Children were raped beat spit on etc. You can loose weight but you can't change your skin color. Any hatered expressed by African Americans is usually, not always expressed out of anger due to racism they've experienced. No it doesn't excuse them but, but if your hit hard enough eventually you're gonna lash back. The N word is very hurtful and disrespectful to a myraid of people of color and of all ages. There was no love behind that word just a meaning of disrespect torture and belittling. As an African- American with friends of all nationalities, I don't use that word to them and I also feel, out of respect to our ancestors, grandparents and to anyone whom had to endure the pain behind that word we should just let it go. Webster has many more words that can mean ignorant or "terms of endearment".
