This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

Find out what happened on the show.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: cabeyl

lady you have no clue! slavey is NOT OVER! how dare you tell us to get over it and that we aren't the ones that went thru it , it was our ancestors. if you had ancestors that were treated SO WRONG then you would understand. that was such an ignorant statement. and if you haven't experienced it then DON'T COMMENT ON IT. cuz you DO NOT know what you're talking about! paul mooney was so RIGHT. my advice to you is the next time you're in a similar discussion: ASK QUESTIONS, LISTEN & TRY TO UNDERSTAND BY PUTTING YOURSELF IN THAT PERSON'S SHOES! afterall you or your spanish ancestors weren't taken anywhere against their will and  were tortured and raped for YEARS!

I am a Catholic. A white Catholic.

My ancestors were tortured in the Collosium by the Romans.

They were torn to pieces by wiild animals for the ENTERTAINMENT of the Roman people.

It was fun to watch my ancestors die.

They sold freaking tickets!

I am not bitter.

I do not demand restitution from Italy.

My people got over it, because that is what you have to do to survive.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

The truth is that the word will never go away....people can say to ban it but it will never stop! I for one hate the word and dont use it because I think its offensive but I'll never say anything to someone I hear use it! I think if African Americans want to use it then thats there business but white people should never  use it because of how they would use it......they have no right to use because it would only be used to mean one thing and we all know what that is!!

As for the parts about racism still around......it absolutely is still present and the hard truth is that it will never go away either, as long as its always being brought up! My thought is that....Yes, African americans should never forget what happened and they should teach their children about their history, but I also think that they should try and move forward instead of dweling on the past. I cant begin to imagine what its like to be an African American in this day and age but I just wish that it all would stop and people just learn to live with the fact that everyone is different and the past is the past. ALL RACES!!! I know there is always going to be ignorant people(of all races) but if we could just  let racist remarks pass and not say them ourselves, then maybe it would get better......dont give the negative power of you!! The sad truth is though it will never stop and all I can do is raise my children to never hate based on skin color and always accept people for who they are(and NEVER EVER use that word)!!!!

The N Word

My wife always has called me the same name for years now and although it's not the N word, when someone else at school called me the same name with meaning, I took it very serious because they had no business calling me anything. So I can see the point of some people who say that in the privacy of their own home is one thing and using a different standard when they are in public. After all, when I'm at home I say things I would never say in public. I don't recall using the N word to anyone because I don't go around insulting people in such a harsh way.

I do agree with the gentleman who said that we as a people are still somewhat racist. I don't have to look to far to see that. And without saying to much, it's something I will have to address.

Tired of the complaining

I am white.

Grew up in a depressed black area.

I saw how all the blacks were treated eith loans to college, and got the jobs n the neighborhood.

We had nothing but trouble.

I am tired sick and tired of hearing black complain they get nothing and all that.

They make there own bed and whenever the can the color of the skin is their crutch.

They are peopl just like whites, i lived the life of a minority.  I am white.

They need to stop holding on to the slavery days and beggin begggin the world to give them more.

BUCK up and shut up!

Every race has had problems

My grandmother came to this country after world war 2, our family had nothing to do with the slave trade, but we still get punished for it, we have been disrespected by the blacks in this country, just for being white. As far as the slavery thing goes just about EVERY race has been slaves at one point or another in history, every other race has "gotten over it" because it has been realized that it was just a bad place in history. And if the blacks knew their history they would know that their leaders sometimes sold them into slavery, and many other tribes trapped others to sell, so it was not just the white folks, also if it was not for the slave trade this country would not have been built into the great place it is now, the blacks have helped to for this country. Race should not matter in this day and age, we are now all the same but we have clubs in schools for blacks, and hispanics, but any club for whites is racest. this country is moving in the wrong direction. And the black people who call each other the n word that white guy was right you make the clan proud because they think they have tought you that you are less of a person. I don't care what race you are if you want respect EARN it don't just sit around and blame the past that no one was even alive for, because the world is wide open now for everyone.

Thoughts

This episode infuriated me and my fiancee. I, as a white person, use the N-word in a playful manner all of the time.  Everytime I say it, I do not think, "I am saying this because I am racist and I hate black people." I went to a black elementary school and I have been friends with black people my entire life. I am far from racist.  Watching Paul Mooney say how white people are racist pissed me off. I don't see how we are racist, yet everything he said wasn't?  That girl was right when she said he was the most racist person in the whole room. HE WAS.  He was HORRIBLE.  Saying how african american people can use the N-word, yet people that look like "us" (white people) can't say it...that sounds pretty racist to me.  We have the FREEDOM to say whatever we want.  That is what makes this AMERICA.  whenever people start telling us what to say, that is when they start messing with our freedom.  If anything, this episode made me want to just continue using the N-word...because if african americans can say whatever they want, why can't we?!

"whites never targeted as inferior"

Quote From: laurapalmer

I am white, and I live in Madison, Georgia. My town boasts having the most free standing slave houses left to date. I am originally from WV, the first free state to cross into during the Civil War if a Slave escaped from the South. It wasn't until I moved to the South that I realized how much Reconstruction had to do with Racism in our country. What I want to say on here is that in this discussion today, a lot of White people in the audience seemed to want to re-direct Racism to Blacks, as if "anyone" can be Racist. But that simply can't be because Whites in our country have NEVER been targeted Racially as an inferior "race". I'm not sure why people can think that historical "racism" in America could be directed to a myriad of races, it was directed toward Blacks and Blacks only, which is why Reconstruction was such a trying time for the South. Slaves were Black. Whites owned Slaves. Northern banks cut off funds to Southern Farmers when Slavery ended, and White people got mad, directing all their hatred toward Blacks, which is why we needed a Civil Rights movement to begin with. It was not the other way round.  I think a lot of White people who claim that there is "reverse racism" need to read Charles Chesnutt's "Marrow of Tradition" and Lillian Smith's "Strange Fruit" to really understand history before trying to make their point, which is probably that anyone can be racist, which could be true if it weren't for the fact that Slavery was a one race based Institution here. How the N word and Racism have been used by the media against Blacks and not Whites has more to do with History than with a personal POV today. Reconstruction Whites in the Agrarian South blamed Blacks for the loss of their money when it really all came down to the South's un-willingness to Industrialize itself. the N word, whether or not it is used, should therefore remind us that American became more productive through Industry than from Farming,a nd if we don't continue to change like we needed to then, we might not be the best country to live in in the future!

Have to disagree with your statement regarding whites never targeted as inferior.  Back in the early part of the 20th century, Irish Catholics were indeed targeted as inferior in this country.  My father told me how difficult it was to get work because businesses had signs posted:  "Irish Catholic need not appy".  A lot of Irish men coming over on the boats joined the American military because that was the only way they could make a living.  Many Irish women worked as maids because that's all they were considered suitable for.

"Honky, mic, white trash", all words that are offensive.  Offenses can be hurled and committed by both sides, and they sting equally.    When will the show on words offensive to white folks be aired?

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: wyotiff

Ya but all of those stations have all races on them. I think your know getting the point about the BET debate. BET has only black characters on the station.
If BET only has black characters on their than what race is Eminem, he is blonde as I dont know what??? What race is Justin Timberlake?? BET is giving all "our" an opportunity because they have discontinued on other stations only to be replaced by white shows. Black shows only come on once a week on UPN...

Dr. Phil

I personally do not like the word and will not use it.  My husband uses it when talking about African Americans on the news.  Criminals are not good people, so he uses it to show how he feels about them.  But neither one of us would use it in public and definately not to anyones face.  I hate the word as much as I would hate to be called a halfbreed.  Even though that is what I am, it is the way it is used that I would not like.  I want nothing more then for ALL people to get a long.

Are you kidding me/

Quote From: bbaby2588

It is not the fact that the news doesn't put the pictures of the white criminals on the screen it is that fact that most white crimes are covered with laws that give them the side of the legal system. Most black k or minority crimes are petty crimes while whites commit crimes that are more extreme like blowing up buildings and mass murders and such crazy crimes as such.... while most minority crimes are survival or from drug use and on a more un sicko level.
I won't deny that the legal system can often side with whites, against blacks, that is a non issue.  How can you say that most black/minority crimes are petty or survival or on a more un-sicko level?  Black women are twice as likely to be beaten by their (black) spouses than white women, blacks consistently commit more violent crimes like armed robbery and car-jacking.  I am not being racist.  These are public statistics you can look up.  The DC sniper was black and what he did was pretty sicko!  Now, I'm even willing to go so far as to say that racism and prejudice against blacks through our history may have contributed to the fact that they are statiscally poorer and "more likely" to commit crimes.  But that doesn't excuse it.  Humans are humans and excusing "black" crime by saying it's petty, for survival or due to drug use, doesn't help your argument, as it's simply untrue.
