This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

Find out what happened on the show.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Very well said and I agree 100%.  Also, I had not thought about that with Barack but it is a very good point.  And I think the way you are teaching your granddaughter is wonderful.
I don't think that Barack is ashamed of who is. If he was he would not be showing photos of his mother nor acknowledging his grandparents. He's realistic he is Black and any time you have a drop of Black blood in you you are considered Black. There is no one pure race. If you check your history and research you would know that every race originated from an Nubian Eve.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: the_truth2008

People stop being foolish and saying most violent crimes are commited by whites!

Personally while working apts throught Atlanta doing Cable tv from 1999-2005 i outsmarted 2 carjackers in 2001 (yes they wanted me to drive to the woods so they could kill me), had a crackhead in bankhead courts (where TI is from)  point a gun at my chest to rob me back in 99...THEN tried to sell me the same gun!
Ive walked in on a gastation robbery around 2004 and had a assult rifle pointed at my face by one of the 5 black males in ski masks.  So am i racist to admit EVERYTIME IT WAS A BLACK MALE!!!

Theres something seriously wrong with a race of people that leave over 70% of their kids with NO FATHERS...and are 11 TIMES more likely to have AIDS...and over 20% times more likely to have other STD's.
I also worked around thousands of mexicans and whites...and NEVER had a serious problem with any of them.   Its the young black cats out there that have NO respect for anything but "get money"  any way they can!  And if your a educated black...they dont descriminate...thell rob and kill you as well.
So to the 25% of black males that take care of your families.... .CONGRATS...but your culture is very screwed up....i truly feel sorry for black women.
first let me say that you have unfortunate bad luck and maybe its something that you did in your life that so many bad things happened to you . Maybe you should look to God for the reasons. Secondly, most of black men can't find a job because of people like you so wonder why they get the mentality "get money".Our kids need to eat to- while white people sit around and turn up their noses at us.I am a black woman- and please don't you feel sorry for us becaause you would never be the one to contribute anything to us.I guess white America is a great race that gives everyone a chance- um no - its the race that likes to keep us under and oppressed.I LOVE MY SKIN. I LOVE MY BLACK BROTHERS AND SISTERS. Could you ask the white man to let our men outta the prisons so that they can take care of their families-no because thats to much like right. the good ole boys love the fact that they can portray us as low lives with no fathers for our kids but just let you and every other white person know- i stand by my race.white people should have left our race alone- deal with the consequences.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

I just finished watching the N-word debate.  This was outrageous.   I cant believe that Dr Phil allowed the biggest racist around on his show.  Paul Mooney is the worst representative of Black America he could have brought on the show.  I was wondering to myself why he set up this horrible platform.  I am an American plain and simple.  We all use stereotypes and if you say you dont you are a liar.  I work with alot of Blacks as a matter of fact I am a minority in my dept.  Out of 43 people we only two white women.  White men there are only 4 so that is 6 out of 43 so I dont want to hear squat about racism in corporate America.

This show was really really a waste of everyones time.  Nothing will come out of it.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

i think the real focus should be trying to get the influencial stars to stop using the word, because this generation is growing up hearing it all over the place and they dont realize the significant tragic history that this word carries. its a disrespectful term that shouldnt be used regardless of your color.

i think the big misconception here is that anyone who uses the n-word is automatically labelled as a "rasicist" which isnt always the case. its just wrong and i dont think people know the true meaning of the word.

Wondering

Quote From: anjib15

I don't know the actual origin of the "N" word, but it doesn't matter who uses it.

They sound illiterate when they do.  You could be a highly educated Harvard law graduate, or

a high school drop out living on welfare.  You are in the same class when you use that ugly word.

I lose so much respect for anyone who uses it.

First of all, the "N" word, as you call it, is a slag term for "Negro": "Member of the black race." - Webster's Dictionary.  I'm sure you have seen stories on the History Channel referring to one having "negroid features."   Italians used to be called a "Wop."  My mother-in-law was Italian and called herself a Wop and used to tell me "Wop" jokes.  Chinese were "Chinks."  Japanese were "Japs."   I think Negroes (blacks, or whatever) are making too much of the word - if they didn't SING it, SPEAK it, WRITE it, it would probably die out, just as those other nationality terms have.

I resent the use of the term "African-American"  - if they are born in this country, they are AMERICAN,..otherwise ALL of us would have long lineage terms for ourselves...Irish/English-American, Polish/English/Scottish-American, African/English-American  - and on and on.  Drop the "African" - it's demeaning and racist.  I read a story in Reader's Digest on that subject which was written by a black man.  He said his ancestors came to this country as slaves.  He had traveled to Africa and saw where his ancestors had been and, but for the fact that they came to this country as slaves or otherwise, there he would be also.  He said "I was born in this country and I am an AMERICAN.  My ancestors came from Africa and so my lineage is African, but I am an AMERICAN and proud to be American."  I have remembered the story all these years, because it was written so well.

Also, people should learn to speak English and pronounce their words - it's not "my birfday is tomorrow, I axed you a question, he went wiff me,   Don't substitute "f" for "th" - work on pronunciation.   My mother used to say, dress neatly, be clean, wash your hair (and comb it), pronounce your words, be honest, be respectful - people will judge you by the way you present yourself.  She is right.  And, as you said, when you use those slang terms, you seem illiterate.

Racism is still alive and well in America

If anyone thinks that Rasicm doesn't still exist they are so wrong. I am a black women married to a white man and we have one son.  Most of my friends are asian americans and white americans and all my friends know that the use of the N-Wordn is not ok to use around me. The N-Word is just not a word in my vocabulary because I do feel like it's very rude and disrespectful. I am a black women who grew up in a mostly white middle-class neigborhood. Classmates, "friends" and their parents all said very racist and stereotypical comments to me about and about my family several times and this was 8yrs ago (so not long). We were a poor family living around a lot of "rich" white people and they never let us forget that they were better. I have been called the N-Word and it hurts a lot.  I will teach my son what is right and what is wrong and I think thats what most parents need to do and what most parents don't do.  I do not think its ok for anyone to use but we cannot control everyone people are going to say and do what they want. Everyone just needs to lead by example and it may take many many years but I think things will get better.

Thanks

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: bandersnac

First I would like to ask Dr. Phil to do a show about "whites"  being called names, that said, I will move on.

Moody has anger issues against "white" people.  Although he acknowledged saying the "N" word in his stand up comedy previously, but now he is older and he has chosen not to use the "N" word and wants it banished from our vocabulary in and outside the home. That will never happen!  And  Moody was not brought over as a slave, as though "he claimed to be," and then when a "white person in the audience said to Moody  you were not brought over as a slave and that you are you the most raciest person in this room, "he stated that well you thought me that white people."

I cant tell you how many times I used the "N" word durning a one hour segment.  Sharpton, not defending Jessie, but making excuses.  Typical.

I close with this thought:  If we "whites" had a "White Americans Convention," would that be accepted??? NO

Clue- KKK conventions

OK!OK!OK!

OK! OK !OK !

Can we just stop this ...with who is and is not allowed to say the word .

I feel that NO MATTER what , if you are BLACK ,WHITE ,PURPLE ,GREEN ,ORANGE .

NO ONE !  has the right to use  that word .

Not in a hurtful way or in a greeting or in passion there is no need for the word.

It is just a word that is wrong .

Think of the sound it makes when you are to say it , in any tone it SOUNDS BAD!

dr phils show today

It doesnt matter what color you are we are all people/humans we need to get over our selves thinking that one color is better then another, cause trully there is no such thing as a color. you cannot look at people by the color of there skin but by who they are individually. everyone is entitled to there opinion, but there should be no racism involved. just because a person from a different race does something wrong to you , you have something against them not against there race. no matter what race we look at there are people in everyone that do somehthing wrong, people can say that only african americans do something wrong well thats what people are gonna think because thats whats being showed on news. people make a bigger stink about african americans doing something wrong then say if a white person did something wrong. we all have different beliefs in life and we all have a different way of living. we all need to respect that. it does become a problem when violence comes out of things going on, but thats when someone needs to step in a say something. I strongly believe 100% that alot of the problems going on right now have to do with the goverment not caring and doing what they really need to be doing, instead of people worrying about what politician is cheating on there other half they should be working on a way to solve some of these problems going on in society today. you can get into trouble with the law for using racial words but its okay for people amongst the laws to use them. Thats not showing you to good of an example. the law states violence isnt okay but its okay for law enforment to use violence on someone for reasons unjustified.  if the goverment and law enforcement would step up and do what they trully need to do maybe some of these issues would get solved. and if someone is white and did something wrong to you, by you saying something about it doesnt make you racist, as if someone that is african american did something wrong to you by you telling someone about it that doesnt make you racist what would make you racist is if you call them racial names when explaining what happened
