This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

Find out what happened on the show.

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: lopezspup

I watched the show and thought it interesting that the black Americans think that the Americans whites do not understand what they go thorough. They do not think of what women had to endure white or whatever. And they still meet challenges and rejection. Although we are trying to change all that we still run into the cooperate white man America. We all have had challenges thorough all our life no matter what color or race. They all think they are superior and run around in circles. Last time I knew God made us the same. Belly aching about it will not change the way society thinks, help changing it will.
Ok I'm a black man and I would like to respond to your comments. Didn't you hear Paul Mooney tell the white woman in the audience that she was a minority and an endangered species? It's because it's true. It is also true that historically, black men have had it much worse than white women. During slavery, black men were castrated, burned alive, hanged from trees... Did you know that some pregnant black slaves were hanged upside down while a white man cut her open and let her baby fall out so that he could stomp on it. Slave owners did this to instill fear into the rest of the slaves, and it worked. It kept them afraid to revolt. Anyways, unless things like this have happened with white women, please don't compare the black struggle with the struggle of the women.  In terms of current issues with women, I agree that women have been discriminated against in the workforce and have been voiceless and this is a terrible thing. However, please do not forget that black men dominate prisons. Please understand that we are still being unfairly  pulled over, harassed and beat up by the cops. I don't think I'm superior so don't generalize. Obviously, you weren't raised around many black people. If you did, there is no way you would make such an ignorant statement.  Black folks are at the bottom of the totem pole so don't say we think we are superior. Even if we did think we were superior, what could we do about it? Can we kill crooked cops? Can all of us get ANY job we want? Can we sneak a loved one out of prison who did not commit the crime in the first place? Should we beg and plead for equality in terms of finances and education? You made a few good points but a few ignorant comments messed it all up.

Respect!!!!!

I would never use the N word to anyone.  I call white people white, black people black, Asian people Asian, etc.  When my husband was in the Marines, they called black Marines dark green and white Marines light green.  Nothing offensive there!.  The word cracker doesn't piss me off.  But the N word is a horrible sounding word.  That word should be wiped off the face of this Earth.  Oh, I was rasied as a Air Force Brat and I had a lot of black friends.  When I worked I had a lot of black friends.  I NEVER used the N word on any of them.  There is no sense in it.  Also, the music needs to stop too.

How about the fact that Whites didn't have enough Power to even have there thoughts and feelings expressed on the show. What if every one up there was white.I thought what black wanted was to be equal. What about equal time so that whites could defend/express ourselves.

Please do not make it seem as though whites got treated unfair. This show was about the N word. This is really a black issue so why would you want whites to dominate this discussion? Blacks are the most poorly treated minority in the world so the least you could do is be a little understanding that we get a forum to discuss the N word. Is that too much to ask for? You wanted more white representation from the show? Did you want "equal" representation? Forget about it. Let us have something. Let us have a voice. Is it often that black people get to discuss such a topic openly in front of millions of people? Dr. Phil did a great thing and I commend him for it. Truth be told, whites dominate this country. Whites dominate the media, dominate the police force, dominate the political positions, dominate the judicial positions, and much more, so try to be a little compassionate for us  because we don't have much and we don't get these opportunities often.

Keep quiet

Quote From: xcryrosex

I really must say that I'm surprised at how uneducated people are who come onto this site saying that 'the N word' is racist. Here, I will clue you ALL in: the ORIGINAL defination: 'N****R (n, adj)--A POOR DIRT FARMER'. There is nothing in there specifically about blacks or any other race. Basically, a n****r is a trashy person, black, white, latino, asian... whatever.
And now that I have cleared that up, maybe Dr. Phil should redo the show over again, minus the most racist of all, PAUL MOONEY, so that people can actually have a discussion. There was no point in having anyone else there because of his dominating and talking over, completely disrespecting, viewpoints different from his own. To Paul Mooney, as well as any other idiots who actually use the defense that YOU were slaves: YOU were not slaves, your ancestors were. and you are no closer to your enslaved ancestors than i am to my slave-owning ancestors. therefore... GET OVER IT, GET OVER YOURSELVES. the world owes YOU nothing. If anything, the world owes your ancestors... but they're dead now so it's irrelevent. so GET OVER IT.
Ok I'm a black man and I take offense to those comments. I was not a slave but my ancestors were. Should I forget about that? Does that not matter? How far back can you trace your roots? I hardly can. By the way, what was my ancestor's last name? What country did my family originate from? Oh that's right, it doesn't matter. I should just get over it. Get over the fact that we have a proud history that white people tried to take away (and in some instances did).  A history in which you know nothing about. Get over one of the biggest (if not the biggest) tragic eras in American history. You probably learned about slavery in elementary school for a few days and then closed the book. The End. Sorry, but there was so much that went on during slavery that you have no idea about. You have no idea about the long lasting effects slavery has had. You have no idea what it is like to be the minority that was/is considered to be less than human and worthless. You have no idea what it is like to be pulled over by the cops just because you are black.  You have no idea what it is like to be called the N word in elementary school by a white kid. You have not idea what it is like to have white kids tell you that you can't go down this slide because you are black. Therefore, you need to speak about your race and your race only. Stop pretending you know black history. If you were intelligent and you wanted to know about black people, then you would ask. That is how you could learn. Other than that, keep quiet because you know nothing about black people. Speak up when you become brave enough to take that blog you wrote and repeat it in front of a black audience.

Come on

Quote From: lazinda

Dr.Phil  I am a loyal viewer of your and was very disturbed by your viewing of this show.  While you stood to the side and let some very militant blacks run rampant on your stage.  To view something this racially one sided at this time I find strangely unfortunate and I wonder about your reason.  Was there an attempt to make whites afraid of blacks.  If not than you failed because that is exactly what  you did.  You could have found reasonable blacks and whites to discuss this but instead you aired extreme militants.  This close to a historic election I wonder about your motives.  Your credibility took a direct hit with this one.  Remove me from your list I am no longer a viewer.

Are you serious? Militant blacks ran rampant on Dr. Phil's show? That word, militant, is a dangerous label to give someone. I loved the show. Maybe it's because I'm a black militant myself. What is a black militant? is it someone who wants justice and equality? I am confused. How could this show offend you so much? You got a chance to see real people, both on stage and in the audience, and everybody expressed themselves openly and honestly. It sounds as though you wanted to hear something different. Maybe you wanted a less heated exchange, but not me. Human emotions ran high and people expressed how they truly felt. Beautiful. I didn't agree with a lot of the comments made by audience members, but it taught me a lot. It let me know that there are very racist white people who claim not be racist, and who are probably very nice people, but deep down have a distaste for black people. The truth came out and I hope Dr. Phil does a part 2.

I know what I would think.............

Quote From: cillysue

I am 61 years ol, grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles and never experienced racisim.  I wasn't taught it, I just never knew about it.  I learned about it when I married a militarty man and lived all over the place.  When I learned that a friend of mine from Florida would not get on a bus if the driver was black, it made me laugh.  I have never heard of anything so ridiculous.  Then my black neighbors told me what they had gone thorough when growing up, couldn't try on clothes they wanted to buy, etc.  I was mad.  I know my mind, and If I had been born black and lived in their area I would be dead.  Now I am a very proud and happy gramma of a black grandson and he considers himswelf black.  I try to teach him all I can about his history, try to keep him from going into the gangs (white or black or hispanic, asian).  I want him to carry himself with pride, be smart, make the right choices and tell him how it is.  He has a great sense of humor, manners, and he does not even think about "what" his friends are.  I see lots of people looking at him then looking at me and I know it is because he is so handsome, how could it possibly be anything else?

Children live what they learn.

If I happened to see you out with your grandson I wouldn't have any thought at all unless, he was exceptionally good looking, had a great smile and was polite, was loud, rude, screaming and running around. Those are the things that I notice. The fact that you are white and he is black wouldn't mean anything to me, I would just consider it a normal grandma & grandson outing. As a white person, I have to admit that I'm glad that I didn't grow up during the time where black people had to "stay in their place". The injustice of that would have ripped my soul out! But considering the fact that it's the year 2008, the 21st century, I feel that it's high time everyone was recognized for who they are, not the color of their skin. In my own mind it's such an antiquated notion. As humans we should be able to rise above such pettiness. But since world peace is unfortunately such an unrealistic goal, why should I expect that the idea of racism should be a thing of the past? Maybe I'm just too naive and not nearly cynical enough? We should be kinder to one another, why can't we be?

You said that blacks are the most poorly treated minority in the world? Have you never heard of Jews? And what about what they have had to endure from the beginning of humankind? It seems odd to me how people of the Jewish faith have been so ignored over the years. And to add insult to injury, actual victims of the holocaust have had to listen to morons stand up and say that it never even happened. There are even Professors in our colleges that are denying the Holocaust ever existed! I don't believe that I've ever heard anyone deny that black slavery existed in this country, have you?

Did you even read my post?

Quote From: anw1815

You may not pay attention but others do. And I do not believe I am 100% wrong on the character issue. It is not that I believe it happens all the time but alot of blacks whites Hispanics ect are judged by race and not character. I feel that maybe you are in a bubble somewhere. Character does make you who you are and in your character is the ability to accept that there are people out there that are racist and part of your character depends on how you react to it. I do not go around looking at how people treat me. I may notice it here or there but I don't base my life on it. I just accept the fact that my children will have racism around them from Black and White people. I know that I will have to deal with it one day. Not by everyone but by some. You are only going on what you feel and not by what is true. I never said it was the majority of white it is white and black.  You may see my children as just children but not everyone will. I have not judged you. You are one person. But you can not be blind to it. racism is alot of ignorance to the fact that most people act like it does not happen and therefor look to be cold not meaning to be but don't really realize how their actions may affect others.  Everyone should stop noticing the color and judging but until there is one race a race as my daughter would call Mixed Up And Beautiful people will still judge by color.(Not all but it will still happen)  White Blacks all races has people that judge others. All I am saying is that it still exist and will always exist. It will get better or maybe it might get worse history repeats its self.

First of all I don't need to calm down as I am already plenty calm. And no, I don't live in a bubble. As I said, you didn't even read my post. And back to the subject of character? Yes, it is the most important part of any human being. Character is what makes you who you are. Maybe you have no real understanding of what that word means. I'm not going to waste my time arguing this point.

Good luck in your life!

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: seenfff

I take it that you were hoping for a more in depth reply? I agree because hate against hate will cause problems, and the countries economic, employment, immigration, and housing problems aren't going to help any.

It is just frustrating that I have yet to find any apology over that remark. It was a downright act to cause problems. Considering, many people, myself included, are only waiting for specifics before I cast my vote for Presidency. Obama already won my vote during the primary, but I simply expect more to come out of a Presidential Campaign than inciting hate between ethnic backgrounds.

How many Blacks do you think are going to vote for Obama clearly because he is Black?  I can tell you right now Black people that have never even cared to vote will walk in on election day and vote for Obama, the sad thing about this is that they are voting for him for the color of his skin and they can't even name off one of his views or what he is calling "CHANGE".  Do you think that is racism?   I do!  How many black Republicans are now going to vote Democrat because of Obama.  Plenty!  Do you think that is a form of racism?  I do!

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: aaron2020

I understand what you are saying. I'm a black man and I don't think complaining is going to help anything. However, I do think there needs to be a discussion on how conditions for black people in America can and should improve. Things are not equal and if you don't believe me then go to your nearest inner city and tell me what you see. Tell me if the schools look the same and are funded the same as schools in the suburbs. Look at the percentage of blacks in prison vs. whites. I can go on forever. Things are better than they used to be but the one race holds the majority of the power.  I agree that complaining isn't the answer but I think we need to look deeper into this complex issue and not say "Just try harder" or "Step up to the plate" or "Go get a job." I know things seem that simple but trust me,  some things are not always as simple as they appear.

I live in Norfolk, Virginia...and I can tell you why there are more blacks in prison then whites!!!

Nobody is holding blacks back from getting a good education, it is solely up to that individual on how bad he/she wants to be successful.  It all goes back to hwo we are raised.  To many people are happy with being lazy and living off of welfare checks....nobody can be blamed for that but themselves.  If the government is going to support uneducated and lazy people, and those people are happy with it....then why would they try to better themselves.  Oh, this goes for all races btw!
