This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

It seems to me that when there is conflict with an African American and a white person that the white person gets attacked that they are racist. Could it be the other way around? Just wondering if anyone else feels this way?

Say what you will! I as a black man simply don't understan. I mean, with all the stealing and lieing on wall street. And the white house. And the super rich, stealing from the rich, and every one else. And a war, that wont end. White America seems to be a

Yes, you are right.

You should cherish your history, learn from it and move on. With your life that is. I'm not trying to imply to move somewhere else. Move on as in move forward in life. Let go of the past. Learn to forgive. Not forget, but forgive. The energy you are putting in what has happened before you were even a thought of a possible blessing to your parent is giving you a negative attitude toward other people. If we both cut ourselves, the liquid coming out will be the same color. This is all that matters to me.

By keeping this debate alive, Dr. Phil is only encouraging more hatred. We all saw it on his stage. The anger kept within this so called funny guy was far from being humorous.

I have plenty of history in my family. My ancestors had to hide to survive at one point. Because he was in hiding, I am here today. Another one was attacked and kept hostage by a tribe. Because he escaped, I am here today. Because your ancestors worked hard in the past, you are here today. It might not have been in the best conditions but you are here today, and most importantly you have your freedom in America.

Yes, I know that some people are still giving you a hard time. Stop generalizing. It is not every other person that you meet on the street. The families that still give you some reasons to feel the way you do, most likely come from generations of families that kept it alive.

Do cherish your history, but it is exactly that. History. Be proud of who you are and what your ancestors have gone through so that you could have freedom in America. Don't forget that most Africans don't have your freedom. If your history is that important to you, think about them and try to help them so that someday they can also say: Because of our American families, we are free today.

As for a negative attitude... well this "Mrs. smarty pants" looks at life in a positive way. You should try it too and move forward.

Ask

Quote From: nlambert21

Let me start off by saying that I am not a racist person, however the black people are always talking about equal rights and what not, so let me ask something why is it alright that the black people have their own black entertainment channel on tv, they have their own black beauty pageants, their own black college foundations etc..   If we started making white only channels, college foundations, pageants and stuff we would be considered racist and not treating blacks and whites equally so why is it alright for them to. It seems to me that the blacks are what is racist now days. Also what is up with calling blacks "african americans" and not calling whites "caucasian". African blacks are completely different from the blacks here in the US. They are very kind and very appreciative of what they have and receive as gifts where as MOST of the blacks here think that everything is owed to them because of what has happened in the past. Let it go. I think that the persons character and behavior and actions is what makes them a N, whether they are white, black, brown, blue. Blacks also have the highest percentage of people in jail and the highest number who is on welfare, so maybe once they start contributing to society instead of take, take take, then that is when society will start looking at them as someone who contributes instead of always taking. It just annoys me for black people to say that we are the ones who are racist when I think that it is the other way around.
My friend, white people do have their own channels. These channels include almost everything besides BET and maybe a few others. You should take time to study. Study black people and ask us questions. This is something all people on these blogs who  have misconceptions need to do. The more you ask, the more enlightened you will become. I am sure you will be happy you did it. I would be happy to tell you about us. It would make me feel better knowing that I could help someone to better understand us. We have a lot going on with us that a lot of people do not understand. I just want everyone to realize that not knowing about us doesn't make you stupid, but making negative assumptions, believing what you hear on tv, and labeling us hurts and in some cases infuriates us. So I ask you to please choose your words more carefully because you are the one who sounds racist. Peace and Love

09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: dbogue

I think the N-word should be treated the same as the F-word. They are bad for everyone. No one should use them. There is no reason to use them. They just hurt .

The adults is the ones who passed that word onto the young blacks who really don't know what is behind that word . The white slave owners is the ones who gave that word to black because they put blacks as the lowest thing on earth. Blacks are so stupid that they call themselves what the white slave owners already said what they were. including the KKK. What bothers me is that the blacks are trying to justifiy it and that is because of their ingorance. If a white call them the n-word so what they already saying they are less than human. Blacks wake up and start teaching the young  people who they are and how stupid they sound saying the n=word. Teach the young blacks how to have respect for themselves.

The N-word not a term of endearment

I think that many people lack a real understanding regarding the N-word. This is partially due to the lack  of experience and/or sensitivity. People who say the N-word means nothing or they see nothing wrong with it, have no clue regarding its origin or connotation. People are determine to do what they what to do regardless of the fact that it is offensive to many people. This is offensive to me no matter who uses it. My experience of growing up in the South and being called nig.... was horrible then and it is horrible now. The younger generation refuses to listen and embrace the feelings of those who have endured much in this society. They did not grow up being demeaned because of t heir race.  They are enjoying the benefits of the fight and struggle of their parents and grandparents.  We should not have to experience negativity to know its impact.  I don't have to be shot with a gun to know that they can kill, because I have seen too many people die as a result being shot with one.  The same principle applies to the use of the N-word, it is hurtful to the people who have been called one over and over again.

great show

i wasn't too suprised at most of the comments on this show..wow!..what a great show...it just behoves me when I see white people try to relate to what black people go through(especially black men)...there is just no way you would or could ever relate.....i was both sad and confused at some of the  reactions ...sad for the black woman that actually married a white man(haha) and confused that  people can honestly say with a straight face that they use that word as a term of endurement??...first of all its all about the posion of the word and secondly the blood shed behind the word...i wasn't born during that time, but i have heard stories and i grew up in the south and had to watch my father being called a boy(when he is a very respectable man)..you would think that our own people would realize something like this which is pretty much  a no brainer!..come on people read a book...

Using th N Word

I'm a little late in joining this discussion, due to the fact that I just saw the episode tonight.

Well, as a Black woman, I feel that the word should not be used. To say that it sholuld be taken away is wishful thinking. But the less that it is used, the less the subject will keep coming up.

The word is ignornant no matter who says it (blacks, whites, rappers etc.) If this is the only word that can be used among friends as a term of endearment, then there is really a problem here. Why someone would want to be addressed as N**** instead of honey, sweety, homey, baby, girlfriend, is totally beyond me? Regardless if you are in your home and your husband or wife is calling you that while "kidding around." I have to say as a 38 year old woman I have never had a boyfriend, a friend nor my now husband call me the N word, whether playing or being in a heated argument. So I'm a little confused how this word can be justified by anyone?

As far as the word is concerned and it's history, it does bring back a lot of pain. As much as people may say, "get over it" "that was the past" this is "2008." It doesn't matter. Ironically, I'm noticing that the ones who are trying to justify the word, and feel that anyone should say it, are the ones who were not there to fight the struggle. They weren't there when the word was written on their homes, their cars. And most of all they weren't there when that person was called the N word to be cruel and mean. So those who say to get over it, don't really know  the true affect unless they went through it. No, I did not go through it, but I can definitely sympathize, adn respect their wisher. It's not fair to tell someone to get over something that you have no clue about...that you cannot relate to. Regardless of any situation.

I have never been told that it's okay to use the word among "us" I may have heard it, in a relatives home during a family funtion; but just like I heard other bad words, I knew not to say it. And I teach my 12 year old son not to say it. It's not cool and it surely isn't a term of endearment.
