This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

Find out what happened on the show.

I'm a little late in joining this discussion, due to the fact that I just saw the episode tonight.

Well, as a Black woman, I feel that the word should not be used. To say that it sholuld be taken away is wishful thinking. But the less that it is used, the less the subject will keep coming up.

The word is ignornant no matter who says it (blacks, whites, rappers etc.) If this is the only word that can be used among friends as a term of endearment, then there is really a problem here. Why someone would want to be addressed as N**** instead of honey, sweety, homey, baby, girlfriend, is totally beyond me? Regardless if you are in your home and your husband or wife is calling you that while "kidding around." I have to say as a 38 year old woman I have never had a boyfriend, a friend nor my now husband call me the N word, whether playing or being in a heated argument. So I'm a little confused how this word can be justified by anyone?

As far as the word is concerned and it's history, it does bring back a lot of pain. As much as people may say, "get over it" "that was the past" this is "2008." It doesn't matter. Ironically, I'm noticing that the ones who are trying to justify the word, and feel that anyone should say it, are the ones who were not there to fight the struggle. They weren't there when the word was written on their homes, their cars. And most of all they weren't there when that person was called the N word to be cruel and mean. So those who say to get over it, don't really know  the true affect unless they went through it. No, I did not go through it, but I can definitely sympathize, adn respect their wisher. It's not fair to tell someone to get over something that you have no clue about...that you cannot relate to. Regardless of any situation.

I have never been told that it's okay to use the word among "us" I may have heard it, in a relatives home during a family funtion; but just like I heard other bad words, I knew not to say it. And I teach my 12 year old son not to say it. It's not cool and it surely isn't a term of endearment.

i couldn't have said it any better!!..well written and well spoken...after reading your words..it brought me to tears......

Lesson

I just watched the show and must say that normally after watching shows on such topics I always feel disappointed mainly because it is such a deep seeded debate with many people on various sides of the issue the real message can become lost in the shuffle.

I have read the various posters arguments some poignant, and some just rants lacking neither logic nor real perspective. In My humble opinion the "N" word will never go away.  We can debate, argue, scream and symbolically bury the word.  However, in the grand scheme of things the word is a cancerous infestation in not only the hearts and minds of Americans, but many Western cultures either familiar with our popular culture or with a shared culture and history.

Actually, It would have been more advantageous for Dr. Phil to have a show about racial epithets of every race, not just so called African Americans.  Focusing on just one race does nothing for the overall debate, which is, "Is this society ready to do what it takes to move past our carnal, egotistical, moronic, selfish desire to belittle everyone but ourselves?"  Is America ready to face not only race, but class, religious extremism, sexism, mysogeny, and bigotry toward Gays?

The problem is no longer racism and bigotry, it is Selfishness and Narcissism.  All of our societal ills could be cured in one day if we all truly had real empathy toward our fellow human beings. One of the problems that Blacks have with the "N" word debate, and the Slavery debate is when people of other races,  and I have heard many other races say, "Just get over it, slavery is over, or racism does not exist anymore?"

The problem here is that although those people are historically correct, they fail to realize that although slavery ended over 200 years ago, the Badges of Slavery is still very much alive.  Jim Crow was a standard practice within American law until the 1960's, police brutality of blacks was rampant in the 70's and 80's and injustices within the Justice system is still an ongoing and very difficult pinpoint.  However, the injustices that occured with the 6 young men in Jena, Louisiana in 2006- current is a tale tale sign that racism is alive and well.

I implore anyone who feel as if blacks are whining about something or other to listen to what is being said instead of rushing to judgment based upon your own private experiences.  All because you may not have been called a racial epithet, all because your family or you have gone through rough times, or whatever else your experiences have been DOES NOT LESSEN IN ANY WHAT SHAPE OR FORM, the reality of what life is like in America for Blacks.

I wonder what the conversation would be if someone in Dr. Phil's audience would have told the Jews to just get over the Holocaust, or the Japanese to just get over being placed into internment Camps during World War II.  People would never think of such things because that would be unreasonable.  So, why say that about Jim Crow and Slavery.  Possibly because in our inadequate American History books we have been told that Slavery ended and some black people had to march after that but now we are okay.

So, what will happen with the Jews 200 years from now, will we tell them to just get over the horrific ordeal suffered by their ancestors? Will we say that to the people in Darfur?  Why is it that People can empathize with certain people's plights for humanity and not others? Possibly because these individuals feel so far removed from the holocaust and Darfur that they feel comfortable because, come on, No one in their right minds would think to put people in Gas Chambers because they are of a different religion.

However, when it comes to Good Old Fashion racism, especially when it comes to Blacks why does the empathy change? Is it because that hits too close to home for people? They may not see themselves engaging in ethnic cleansing. But, they have said the "N" word in anger, they have clutched their purses or crossed the street when a young black man walked by, they have tossed that resume in the garbage with the ethnic sounding name.  Yes, that may not be the actions of a Nazi, but I am sure the Nazi's justified their behavior also.

Lesson:  We should not over simplify one another.  Everyone has a story, pain and strife and until we can have true empathy for the next person, this debate will never end.

Peace and Blessings

THE N-WORD DEBATE

Quote From: ohines

It seems to me that there is reverse racism going on.  Blacks can use N***** in their songs and raps but Whites aren't supposed to say it.  Where's the logic in that?  If they can use it about themselves then they shouldn't  get all in our faces when we or anyone else uses it too.

Besides....aren't there more important things to work on in this world of ours besides the use of a word?

Yes, I  agree that there are more important things to talk about. But, in response to your comment about Blacks using the word n***** in their songs. That's a generalization. They are not our songs as you say. They are the songs of ignorant, selfish individuals, who exploit their own people. Besides, why don't you pose that question to the record company owners, many of whom are white. I often wonder if these same rappers wanted to use other degrading racists slurs, such as those directed towards whites or other non-blacks, would they permit it? I doubt it. And yes, Def jam may be owned by Russel Simmons, but as aforementioned some blacks will exploit there own mother to make a living. Lastly, although Blacks can be prejudice, as long as the current non-black power structure controls the wealth, means of production, and political system in this country, We can never be racist. To be racist is to have the ability to impose

your standards of beauty, religious beliefs, economic policies, political ideology, etc, upon another group.

IT is there and always will be.

You cannot ban the N word as is, it exists and will exists in the future. There is no possible way to prevent that you can stop everyone from using it. As a person you can separate your self from the people who use it and say you don't hear it any more and it doesn't exist in your world, but back to the real world people are using it and there is no way you can stop it. If that word becomes a hate crime you might as well kiss our freedom of speech good bye. But if that word gets banned all the other bad words for other races should be banned as well. I use that word with my friends and in front of them. and I have not said it in a racist way. But we all have a little racism within our selves its natural to not like someone and sometimes its someone from another race. I would consider you a liar if you said you were never ever racist in your life or had a racist thought. We are all human its normal to make mistakes we are not perfect as is but one thing is for sure, the words are already made its up to the person who decides to use them; how to use them, when to use them and in what intent.

That'd be something "new" to do. That sounds sort of like PBS when they teach new words. Oh well, just a thought of something "new" to do for you.

Everyone have a GREAT weekend and "be the change you want to see." Me too. WE too.

The Problem Is This.

Quote From: aaron2020

My friend, white people do have their own channels. These channels include almost everything besides BET and maybe a few others. You should take time to study. Study black people and ask us questions. This is something all people on these blogs who  have misconceptions need to do. The more you ask, the more enlightened you will become. I am sure you will be happy you did it. I would be happy to tell you about us. It would make me feel better knowing that I could help someone to better understand us. We have a lot going on with us that a lot of people do not understand. I just want everyone to realize that not knowing about us doesn't make you stupid, but making negative assumptions, believing what you hear on tv, and labeling us hurts and in some cases infuriates us. So I ask you to please choose your words more carefully because you are the one who sounds racist. Peace and Love
Americans have come a long way with regard to race.  I believe that a majority of Americans would drink after, use the restroom after, sit by, buy from, sell too, enroll, hire, work for, and befriend an individual of a different race.   In early America a white person and a black person could not even use the same bathroom, drink from the same drinking fountain, or swim in the same pool.  White people forced black people to the back of the bus. This was true racism.  Honest to goodness you are not allowed to eat here because you are black racism.   The term racism, however, has been perverted into a retarded hybrid of its former meaning.  In today's society a  person opposing affirmative action can be labeled a racist by someone who agrees with the plan.   Affirmative action is a policy argument which has very little bearing on a person's individual feelings regarding race.  The term racism gets tossed around so much that it distracts from the minority of real race issues that are still prevalent in small cross sections of the United States.

Mr. Mooney is clearly angry with what he termed "White America."  He wants his pain validated.  He does not want to be told that he is wrong and that he needs to "move on."  Why should he, his pain is real.  However, that is no excuse for his anger with so-called "White America"    Terming whites into this "White America"  clearly lumps every white person in America into a group with a negative conotation.  Is this not the same generalization Mr. Mooney claims "White America"  is doing to Black America?  It is intellectually dishonest.  I have no doubt, given Mr. Mooney's age, that he has experienced his fair share of ignorance from white individuals.  Therefore, as I stated earlier, his pain is justified.  However,  at some point Mr. Mooney has to acknowledge that race relations have come a long way in America in the last twenty years.   It is also wrong for Mr. Mooney to view "White America" as the enemy based on his personal experience.   At some point, Mr. Mooney has to forgive and treat everyone as equal and the same.  Otherwise, this  ignorance only perpetuates itself from one generation to the next.

PEOPLE OPEN YOUR EYES!

I was getting so into everything that was going on sitting in my living room watching it. I think that NO one should be allowed to use the "N-word." It can't be used in a "nice" way. That's not how people use that term. I also don't understand why people in their own "cliques" get to say words to the people in their group, but if an outsider says it to them, they get all defensive. There is no difference. If someone says something that doesn't offend them, a person who walks by may get defended. I would. It doesn't just happen with the "N-word" it happens with every "clique". Homosexuals call each other fags, girls call each other bitches, hoes, sluts. Why does that make it okay? I don't understand it. I think people should not use those words. They are very hurtful and demeaning. Some lady was talking about using the "N-word" in private? Hell no! If you're doing it in private, it's going to slip out one way or another. Also, people who wear After 9/11 I remember everyone saying how everyone who wears a ghutra (Head Dress) is a "bad" person. I have some very good friends who were discriminated for wearing something that is part of their culture! What is wrong with people? People need to actually look at what is around them. Just because a few stupid people in their race decided to do something terrible, does not mean that they are ALL like that! I hate when people say "that's so retarded" or "that's so gay". When did gay become stupid? I was a Coordinator for a program for school called Unity Leaders and we talked to our peers at school about racism and how to accept people for who they are. A person is a person no matter what their race, religion, sexual orientation, age, etc... I think people need to be reminded of that. A soul has no color. T

Jessie and Al would be all but out of buisness

"Ban the -N- word" Are you crazy ? It's an attention grabber for sure and the media can't get enough of it .If you banned it we would probably see less of Sharpton and Jackson in the news for sure. Someone has already wrote on here to use it at your own risk and I agree. My boss is fat so I hardly ever here fat jokes on the floor at work and I damm sure don't tell any when she is around. I think common since might make a come back some day and I hope I live to see it happen. Most people of normal intelligence can tell within a sentence or two being uttered my someone you just meet what level they are on . Not that I am superior or inferior to anyone . I was taught as a child that not everyone is going to like you or what you have to say . I am almost sure with a great degree of certainty that most of the people that this topic is a big issue in their life are not registered voters.I have to say I had to work and missed the show when it aired but caught only the second half of it when it aired the second time on channel-9 here in L.A. I wonder if Dr. Phil would consider having Paul Mooney be his audience warm up guy . I promise you that if you ever saw Paul Mooney on stage at one of the clubs here in L.A. or where ever you would laugh harder than you ever had. His humor is so off the chart I can't explain it . Rev Al  looked pissed the whole time he was on the show and nobody called him anything he was just mad . The only reason th media loves him and Jackson is because they know that everytime they do a piece on either one of them it pisses white people off . I have to give them some props that in there day they my have had some good intentions ,but niether one of them has ever held an office in the Government and they don't have the power or the real desire to change anything that would be useful to anybody .I don't like or dis-like either one of them but I see right through there motives and agendas. You can only be lead if your willing to follow . If they were on a crusade to do something good for poor people like taking the profit out of street drugs so the cops could quit practicing new tactics in the poor neighborhoods and trailer parks on people that are already having a hard go of it in life ,I would applaude and respect that. The N word is offensive I do agree ,but I think promoting that you will never be anything more than a victim of your circumstance and surroundings is far worse. This is America the greatest country in the world and you can be anything you want to be . The only person that I don't think would ever use the N word is Billy Gram ,as far as I am concerned all the rest of those T.V. preachers are going straight to the hell, save for a couple of them that I think are sincere.Well that's about all I have to say about that show ,Oh Wait one more thing about the experts on the panel. Paul Mooney is the only one on that panel that is an expert on the N word ,because he took it made it funny a long time ago,he tells the truth about it and paints a picture that nobody wants to look at cause it's the truth that nobody want's to look at and he such a comedy genius if you take what he says personal you are exactly the type of person he is talking about white or black. Some comics get boring after you have seen them doing the same thing over and over you can't wait for them to get a sit com or something so they can have somebody writing something different for them to say,But I you can watch Paul Mooney and never get enough and he will never bore you . A lot of comics have taken some his best stuff and changed it a little bit went far with it ,some of them bomb bad with it though ie:Micheal Richards. Gotta be Mooney to pull it off right is all I can say.Now that's all I got to say about the N word

09/12 The N-Word Debate

What a frustrating topic.  I thought Hill Harper was very well spoken and was able to get his point across with a good tone of voice.  Paul Mooney appears to want to keep the separation between races and did come across as being raciest by the way he talked to others of a different race, raised his voice, talked over what others were saying because he felt what he had to say was more important and held more weight.  He did this all while talking down to them.  I guarantee that if it was Graham that said he would never be with Sheryl that it would have been considered a raciest remark but it is OK for Sheryl to say she would never be with him and it is suppose to be funny.  It was a RUDE comment aimed only to embarrass him.  Sounded raciest to me as well.  To the person that is so into telling other about "us" as a race and how white people do have their own TV channels.  You will never see the White Entertainment TV as a channel, or White Miss America Pageant, or American Indian Miss USA Pageant, or a Dominantly based Mexican race college.  Why, because all of those would be considered raciest to the African American community.  I have never seen a "white" person enter the Miss Black USA pageant because they needed a quota of entries.  I think the audience member who said that this was based on people giving the word power is right.  Because it has been used in a negative term that is what people will think of first.  Just like in South Carolina, they took the rebel flag down from the State House.  It did not matter that it was a sign of the history of SC, weather it is good or bad, or that many died of all races during that period.  They took it down because there were white people who used it as a negative symbol.  So even though I know that it is a sign of the SC history, that we can't change, and that we are not proud of, that flag had to be taken down because of the negative symbolism that was attached to it.  As far as the get over it comment.  I get that.  I have had a rough life and sometimes things just stink but I don't walk around and blame every other thing that doesn't go my way based on the past.  I am American Indian and history shows land was taken from them.  You don't see them in a uproar blaming those acts that took place before their time on the things that are not going their way now.  If you are of another race than black then you are not allowed to disagree with something that a black person says because you are then considered raciest.  If something doesn't go their way then it is comes down to being because of their race.  Why can it not be because of their attitude, or because of rules set or something.  I don't think that there will ever be a world without racism because the black community wants to keep things separate and it seems to be OK but if any other race does that then they are raciest.  I am American Indian and I like Barack Obama for him.  Not because he is black but my black friends say that they only support him because of his race.  Though I think he will win, I do believe that if he doesn't it will not be because the AMERICA  people wanted someone with different ideas.  It will be perceived that he didn't win because of his race.  People of other races than black are always trapped because they will always be accused of racism first in a heated situation and a situation will never be explained that maybe they were reacting to the person being rude and breaking rules.  Oh no, no one wants to hear that side of it.  It is just so frustrating because it always seems like the black community is raciest against the white community yet the white community is always the ones being accused of the raciest if they argue or express a different opinion.
