This two-syllable expression is arguably the most divisive word in society. Dr. Phil tackles this touchy topic with help from a panel of outspoken luminaries: civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; legendary comedian and writer Paul Mooney; CSI actor and author Hill Harper; comedian Sheryl Underwood and conservative radio talk show host Michael Graham. First, is there a double standard that allows African-Americans to use this sensitive word, while non-blacks are forbidden? The debate heats up when Rachel, a white guest, says she calls her husband the N-word all the time. Then, should hip-hop artists be censored or fined for using the N-word in their songs? Becky says rappers promote negative stereotypes with their lyrics, but find out who Rev. Al Sharpton thinks should face the music. Plus, does tone or intent make a difference when using the N-word? See what Dr. Phil thinks and share your thoughts here.

Actually, I believe Obama is of a mixed race.  Aren't most of us?  People need to stop seeing the color of someones skin and try to look deeper.

And, you're right about ignoring the word.  If people like Al Sharpton AND Dr. Phil would stop bringing up the subject, it might just lose its power.

Glad to have you on the board. Too many ignorant people on here.

For many years, I have been offended by the N word and I am white.  However, I think we are the ones being discriminated against.  Why is that there can be organizations just for blacks but not for whites.  For instant the Negro College Fund, Miss American?  I will never understand why so many concessions are made for different races.  Not just blacks.  If you want to live here, live as an American
The funny thing is this is not a black and white America. There are many different races that live in America. I would like to thank all the races except blacks for not giving whites a hard time. I think blacks are arrogant to think we love to hate them so much.  What makes them so special that they think we are so focused on hating them. If whites are so racist how come no other race complains like you do? Whites are pretty much individualist we judge everyone by their personality. Some whites may call them the N word only because they feel attacked. People name call when they feel attacked! They remind whites everyday what word they hate the most. If you make me so angry that I feel the need to call you a name I am going to pick what will make you angry! People get called names all the time, WELCOME TO AMERICA, SUCK IT UP. Doesn't anyone see that whites are always being attacked.

I am so tired of this subject!  Only uneducated, illiterate people use the N word.  The same people that refer to woman as "Bs" or "Hs".  No matter what color you are, this language is unacceptable.  But, we will continue to have this problem until everyone becomes colorblind when it comes to race and we start showing more respect for one another no matter what your race.  Don't you think it's time to let go of old outdated modes of thought and get on with more pressing issues  like how we can help each other.

You think only uneducated illiterate people use the N word. Come on I'm far from uneducated. I'm sure you have never used it, OK  like I believe that, come on be real. I don't use it to hurt blacks, As long as I have no intention to hurt someones feelings its very OK

I too agree about the use of Al Sharpton.  I am a black woman, and I am offended that society believes that blacks need to have "leaders" to speak for them.  What other race has that?  Al Sharptons views should not broad brush a complete race.  Whenever I hear the word being used, I just consider the source.  People are going to speak how they want to.  I have challenged my two male black childeren to be "better" than what society expects them to be.  To reach beyond what the statistics say.  We need to face the fact that racism still exsists and more than likely will always exsists, however, it is not an excuse, or reason for poor actions.  We each need to be responsible for our own behavior and realize that God loves us all, no matter what the color of our skin.  I would have much rather seen Dr. Phil have TD Jakes on to discuss this issue.  Al Sharpton...come on, he isn't going to get much accomplished with Sharpton and as long as hosts with power like Dr. Phil keep bringing on people like Al Sharpton it may be great ratings and that is about it.
Watch how Al Sharpton takes what I say and totally twists it! Now to me he is racist.

i get bothered by this topic everytime i hear it.

it is 2008, its time to get over it already. i could understand better if the "colored" people didnt use it, but  for pete sake i hear it come out of their mouths more than i do a white person.. but yet if a white person says it, all hell is going to break loose. life is what you make it, and for that to still be an issue now is just crazy. i still listen to the excuse, "it's because we're black isn't it?" are you serious? there may be some predujice people out there still but come on people, in the real world, we all know that this is something of a "security" thing to use, i would love to say "it's because i'm white isn't it?" EXCUSES! get over it. as far as the "N" word goes, all i can do is laugh, maybe if they stop using it, it wont be that big of an issue, can they not decide on something else?

GOD I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It seems to me you are a bit angry yourself.  You're right, NO ONE should be playing ANY kind of race card.  But those networks, magazines, schools etc...belong to ALL of us.  I'm of Hispanic heritage and we've been here just as long as the American Indians who were here long before any other race.  It really isn't about the color of your skin, it's about what you're made of.  Offensive people are offensive PEOPLE.  Good people are good people.  Which one are you?

Azeedra I agree with you, thank you

9/12 SHOW

Quote From: ryeclan

It seems to me that when there is conflict with an African American and a white person that the white person gets attacked that they are racist. Could it be the other way around? Just wondering if anyone else feels this way?
OMG, Paul Mooney!!!  That man HATES white people.  You can just see it on his face.  He is the most bigoted man I have ever seen.   I am surprised that he gave Dr. Phil the respect to come on the show!!!  It seems to me that any black comedian can say "cracker", "white devil" or any other slur, but if someone white says the N-word or any other thing, they wind up apologizing to Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton.  Speaking of Al Sharpton, during the Tawana Brawley fiasco, (I'm sure many New Yorkers remember that) I was in Downtown Brooklyn on Jury Duty walking around Court Street at lunchtime.  Down the block comes the Rev. Al Sharpton.  (Alton Maddox's office was on Court Street).  Well, the Rev. Sharpton had on the most beautiful blue pin stripped suit and he looked very handsome in it.  I walked by him and said "Rev. Al, beautiful suit".  This man looked at me as if he wanted me dead.  I knew it was because I was white.  He didn't want to know anything from me because I was white, but I only wanted to compliment him.  It reminded me of how Malcolm X treated white people that only wanted to help his cause.  I laughed that day and I laugh now at how he tries to make it look like he is a good guy.  Another thing, about Barack Obama, where is his WHITE mother.  She is never around.  Unless she is dead, I think that he should have her with him because you know this whole thing is going to become a racial card and if mom shows up, this wil be avoided.  And the N-word, to me it means ignorant and believe me, I know a lot of N white people.  If you are genuinely a good person, color doesn't matter, but please don't be a phony.  If you don't like white people just because they are white, say so.  Don't tell me about your ancestors being slaves.  My people didn't come to this country until the early 1900's from Naples, Italy.  They were too poor to eat, let alone have a slave.  Just remember, if you are going to give it out, your going to get it back.

I was referring to using the "N" word in a negative way.  But, you know as well as I do, that word is usually taken negatively when a white person directs it to a black person.  As a rule, the "N" word is OFF LIMITS to whites.  LOL  No offense to you in particular.  And, whether you believe it or not, I don't believe I've ever used that word.  I'm an old hippie and have ALWAYS been against prejudice.

I too am against prejudice. I love blacks just as much as I do whites. You will hear me say that on the show. I am just so tired of the entire race issue. Most Blacks hates whites and Al Sharpton is trying to be their ring leader. I just want all blacks to know not every white person you see is racist. Yesterday I went to the video store and as I always do I locked my door with my key remote as I was walking in. A black man .that was parked next to me yelled out a laugh as if I did it because he was there. He was the passenger in the car and heard me lock the door. It really made me mad because I was judged for being racist for locking my car door. If a white person burps it racism! I don't have a problem with what color a person is. I have a problem with the attitude that is behind the color. SO what if whites don't like blacks or blacks don't like whites, lets all live our lives and move on. Deal with the problem as they come. As for Al Sharpton watch as he twists everything I said into a racist remark!!!!!!!!!
