(Original Air Date: 09/18/08) Could you be guilty of abusing your child and not know it? Where are the boundaries when it comes to parenting? Treffly is a mom of three who never thought she would be accused of breaking the law. But that's exactly what happened when she left her daughter in the car to do an errand just 30 feet away. Treffly's case sparked a flurry of opinions and heated debates across the country. People in the community and a criminal defense attorney weigh in. And find out what Dr. Phil thinks about Treffly's encounter with the law. Then, Lynn says her biggest regret is leaving her daughter alone the night the 13-year-old died. Find out how a false allegation landed her behind bars. Her conviction was overturned, and Lynn became the first woman in U.S. history to be cleared by DNA evidence. Hear how the truth came to light and what life has been like since she was released from prison. And, hear about Lynn's son, Ed's, experience growing up in foster care as a result of his mother's incarceration. What can mother and son do to rebuild their bond? Find out what you can do to improve the lives of children in the foster care system. Plus, don't miss the steps you need to take if you're wrongly accused of a crime. Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

12/22 Parents Falsely Accused

I LEAVE MY CHILDREN IN THE CAR TO PUT MY CART AWAY. I THINK THIS GOVERMENT HAS TOO MUCH CONTROLL OF OUR PARENTING. AND THAT IS WHY THERE ARE MORE CHILDREN BEING CHARGED AS ADULTS. I BELIEVE A PARENT SHOULD HAVE THE SAY OF WHAT THEY DO WITH THEIR CHILDREN (NO HURTING).  I GAVE BIRTH TO MY CHILDREN NOT THE GOV.

A little common sense PLEASE!!

O.k., I don't usually respond to these boards but I felt this show reveals just how tunnel visioned our society has become-you're either a child abuser or a martyr. Life is not so black and white people and I don't think this woman deserves the blacklisting people seem to be giving her. If everyone who thinks she is wrong takes 3 kids out of car through rain, sleet, snow and hail as you would seem to attest, just to drop something off for 1 minute, then WOW! My hat is off to you. Personally, I find it safer-that's right SAFER-to leave my 3 kids in the car when the weather is crazy and I am just dropping off a letter, etc. and still have them in view, because if I don't, I run the risk of at least one of them trying to run off. You say you think it's riskier to leave a child asleep in a car seat, but what about the health risks of bad weather, or waking them repeatedly from naps, or having them run off and get hit by a car or abducted, etc. etc. You're taking a few situations of children being left for Hours in a Hot car and using it to justify this new parental witch hunt. Of course it is Wrong to leave a child in the car to go shopping or eat at a restaurant--but this is the point...Common Sense should dictate our disgust not extreme cases of neglect that led to death. That baby was in no danger and if you believe she was then let me sell you the Golden Gate Bridge!

My kid was safer in the car

When my son was about two, we shopped in a village where the merchants left their doors open to the sidewalk.  I had quick business at a print shop and knew my little boy could be out the door the minute I wasn't looking.  I parked directly in front of the door, left him in his car seat with the windows up and the sunroof open on a fine, pleasant day.  He had his favorite book and I watched him and waved to him while I waited in line, maybe 15 feet from him.  He was happy.  A policeman came in and asked whose child that was.  Someone from the restaurant next door had called the police and exaggerated that he had been left in the car for half an hour.  I explained, the officer gave me a scolding.  The person who ratted me out would have done better to come into the shop and ask in person, rather than calling the police and lying about how long my son had been there.  It was the only time I ever did that.

UGH!

I am sorry to all who have ever had to deal with Children's Protective Services.  I asked my mothers co worker to go check on my daughters daycare due to diaper rashes.  I told her that if she was home there were none but the minute she was back to daycare she had them.  So I was a concerned mother.  Then went there and left then went back with a warrent to remove my child from my care.  I was accussed of medical neglect!  For the diaper rash and not enforcing her to wear her hearing aids!  Remember, I asked them for help!  For 9 months, I did everything I was told I had to do.   During her stay in foster care, we experienced many problems.  She was in 8 homes in 9 months!  One of the homes took her to a new doctor cause she was ill and the dr told them that she had a liver disorder.  He sent her to Uof M and they did tests.  Finally a skin biopsy was done.  COme to find out that she has a rare genetic disorder taht diaper rashes are part of it and that her hearing would always be an issue.  There is no cure for this disorder and most children die by 19 years old.  The judge at the hearing to let her come home was the only person to appologized to me for having this happen and that they should have investigated this more.  I have nothing nice to say about the system or Protective Services!

12/22 Parents Falsely Accused

I watched your show today and just need to say the lady know she would not do all that to put mail in a box. About the mother who was accused of killing her daughter. I felt the family pain.I was so outraged that this system is letting so many people down. And the family is the one that suffers. I feel when a big mistake like that someone should be held responsible. My heart really went out to the son. I just had to cry, I was so mad.

CHILDREN LEFT IN CAR

LAST YEAR A MOTHER LEFT HER CHILD IN THE CAR AND IT CAUGHT ON FIRE AND THE CHILD DIED.  SHE WAS ARRESTED FOR MURDER.  AFTER MANY MONTHS OF PUBLIC HARRASSING, THE WOMAN WAS NOT FOUND GUILTY BY A COMPASSIONATE JUDGE.

HOWEVER A PARENT SHOULD ALWAYS CONSIDER ALL THINGS THAT CAN HAPPEN TO A CHILD LEFT ALONE.   KIDNAPPING IS NOT THE ONLY THING.

What are we teaching out children?

I feel that the way the country has changed since I was a kid is very sad. I think child abusers should be put in prison where they belong. Some things are completly taken out of context though. When I was a kid we didn't even call what we got a spanking we called it a whipping. We were not abused we respected our elders and I love my mom and dad very much.If another grownup punished us for doing something back then we didn't dare tell our folks or we would get another one. Nowdays kids have no respect for anyone because parents jump in the middle no matter what the kids have done. Kids nowdays are taught they can get away with anything including murder because someone is gonna come to their rescue..

We use to leave our doors unlocked but not anymore. When children have no fear of anything no matter what they do this is what we get . I would love for someone to show me how this way is better.

Went too far, there's more important matters

She could still see the car and could run back within 10 seconds. If anybody tried to break into that car to kidnap the kid they'd never make it before she got back. Can't just snatch her easily she's in a car seat. And I completely understand why she left the toddler in the car, it was easier and she was close enough. Parents who leave their kids in the car a long time, can't see the car, and it's too hot that's a problem. This woman didn't do anything wrong. What gets me is I live in Illinois too and I've known some people who are having real abuse done to them and the police don't take enough action. Like they've actually told the police they are being sexually abused and the police just went and talked to their parents told them it was wrong blah blah but they didn't get arressted or even put on probation. And one guy I know was getting beat and the police said they couldn't arrest his parents because they didn't have enough physical evidence and he also wasn't able to report it for 3 days. Said he had to have reported it that night.

So what gets me is the police go over the line and arrest a woman did something that wasn't all that bad. The kids have to watch their mom get arrested and they almost get taken away and could very well be placed in a foster home with real abuse or a real neglegent gaurdian. But the police don't always act on cases where there's real negligent or abuse. Stop over reacting on small cases and go out and arrest the parents who really truly did something wrong and do not deserve the kids.

mail box

I thought it was great when Dr Phil said something about the lady putting mail in the mailbox. I wonder myself what some people would do if a camera were to follow them around....
