(Original Air Date: 09/18/08) Could you be guilty of abusing your child and not know it? Where are the boundaries when it comes to parenting? Treffly is a mom of three who never thought she would be accused of breaking the law. But that's exactly what happened when she left her daughter in the car to do an errand just 30 feet away. Treffly's case sparked a flurry of opinions and heated debates across the country. People in the community and a criminal defense attorney weigh in. And find out what Dr. Phil thinks about Treffly's encounter with the law. Then, Lynn says her biggest regret is leaving her daughter alone the night the 13-year-old died. Find out how a false allegation landed her behind bars. Her conviction was overturned, and Lynn became the first woman in U.S. history to be cleared by DNA evidence. Hear how the truth came to light and what life has been like since she was released from prison. And, hear about Lynn's son, Ed's, experience growing up in foster care as a result of his mother's incarceration. What can mother and son do to rebuild their bond? Find out what you can do to improve the lives of children in the foster care system. Plus, don't miss the steps you need to take if you're wrongly accused of a crime. Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Everyone is human - don't take a chance

I tie a big baby rattle to my keys when I get in the car with my children, and tie it to their seat when we get out.  I don't think I would EVER leave my child in the car accidently, but why take a chance?  it is not easy (next to impossible) to put the keys into my pocket or purse with the rattle on it. What if today is the day my routine is different? What if I just learned something overwhelming and my focus is off? What if something distracts me? No, I always put the rattle on.

Just my opinion

The child was warm, dry, and safe.  The mother could see both the vehicle and the child.  Ok what's next? If you walk away from a grocery cart say a couple feet to gather some groceries with a child securely safe in the cart will be consider abuse.  Their are so many children that are seriously abused and people turn away from it.  Obviously the court saw this woman as innocent lets get a clue!

To those self rightous people who say "I would never do that".  I am not a lazy parent not now or when my children were small, but I have left my sleeping baby in the car to put mail in a mail box, to pay for my gas, but I only did this when I could see both my child and my vehicle.

Dr. Phil thank you for doing this show.

Lady on webcast from Illinois

I was really surprised by that woman's response in the web cast.  Dr. Phil asked about mailing a letter.  I don't believe her.  For one thing, if her child was secured properly in a child car seat,  what harm can the child get into??  He or she can't get out, if your child isn't properly secured while you are driving, you are more guilty of endangerment than someone walking a few feet to mail a letter. I would love to follow you, because I really don't believe you either. What do you do when you shop?  Do you place your child in the car and then unload the cart?  Do you leave your child in the car while you get the stroller out of the trunk or do you try to hold your toddler the entire time???  I am a mother of four.  I know how difficult things can be.  I am curious what you would do if you had 2 kids under the age of 3 and both were sleeping? I will tell you what I would do.  I would take the letter that needed to be mailed.  I would circle until I could get the closest  parking space to the mail box, park my vehicle, shut my vehicle off, lock the doors, walk the 10 feet, mail my letter, and be back without disturbing my children.

About Viewer that wouldn't leave her child inthe car to mail a letter

Dr. Phil, she's not talking reality. I can't even believe her. I've raised three children, two toddlers at once. You be as careful as you can and pray God will cover anything you might miss. She must not have a life.

kids in car

ok, this is not  a parent who left kid in hot car for hours and stuff, how many of you have put your kids in the car, and went to put the grocery cart away, or forgot their favorite toy or the car keys, or cell phone and had to run bk into the house?  I ask, how many have done that, this is a place you should be truthful, don't throw boomerangs if you can't catch it when it comes back

09/18 Parents Falsely Accused?

Quote From: msklee

Is it neglect or abuse to leave a child unattended in another room of the home for more than 2 -3 minutes?

i agree with this one, are you always in the same room or even within 30 feet of your child in your own home, or in the backyard

CASA

Quote From: tkwrites

Dearest Edward and Mom & Family, my heart goes out to all of you.  What a terrorizing thing to go through.  I am a child of the system myself-- in and out of state homes and foster care because my mother had mental illness and could not parent.  I know exactly what you went through.  They were the same to me.  The other children mattered much more and I was shoo'd away.  It was horrible and I felt so alone.  I have children now and cannot imagine your mom terrorized every single day being pulled away from her dear children wondering what they are going through every day.  I am inspired by the CASA program and inspite of my busy schedule, I am choosing to join.  If I can make a difference in a child's life as much as I needed it, that would give me some self healing too probably.

God Bless you all and I hope you find the peace in your life that you so much deserve.

your friend, Teresa

Although the foster parenting 'system' seems to be broken, the CASA program is a way to make a difference for the children stuck in it!  I am a CASA, and find it to be the work I was called to do.  There are SO many children who can benefit from having someone who is protecting and advocating for THEIR best interests.  I encourage Teresa and others to follow this lead and get involved and become a CASA volunteer in your community.  CASA is the only volunteer organization that empowers everyday citizens as officers of the court. In an overburdened social welfare system, abused and neglected children often slip through the cracks among hundreds of current cases. CASA volunteers change that. Appointed by judges, CASA volunteers typically handle just one case at a time—and commit to staying on that case until the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. While others may come and go, CASA volunteers provide that one constant that children need in order to thrive.  Thank you Dr. Phil and Robin for supporting this critical and important work - God Bless!

Lynda

what about those that are failed

My son was molested and NO ONE would help us. Michigan is big on keeping families together at all costs. The perpetrator had money to fight the accusations where we didnt. I was disappointed to hear Dr. Phil not metion how child protective services does not always do their job or that legal aid often times will not take on a case concerning child abuse. Its truelly sad that we live in a nation where child molesters will walk free because a child cannot speak or can hire an expensive attorney. Parenting classes will cure you from being a child molester.

09/18 Parents Falsely Accused?

Quote From: ladyjessica

I've gotten angry watching Dr. Phil in the past but nothing has made me as angry as watching that arrogant b---h who left her child in the car!! How could she NOT know it was wrong? She is demanding an apology? What if someone had rear ended her car? What if someone had smashed the window and snatched her baby?  Could she have run thirty feet in time to stop them? Doesn't she understand that it takes only an instant for tragedy to happen? She should be thanking those officers for giving her a wake up call.

What angered me most was her obliviousness to what could have happened and her insistence that she was the injured party.

We pay a great deal of lip service to our love of children in this country, there are great debates about the rights of the unborn and then we treat out children like trash. I don't understand.

1, what if someone rear ended the car with mom in it, 2. car was locked, i don't know about you, but i've run more than 30 feet to catch my kids from doin something hurtful, so it can be done, a tragedy can happen no matter what you do

Foster Homes

Quote From: pearamedic

I've notice its the people who accuse and dictate to everyone else how to parent their kids who have the most annoying, rude, back talking brats.  Child welfare worries about some of the dumbest things.  Child welfare should be a form of government that I believe should be banned.

My daughter was bitten at the daycare.  Child welfare NEVER investigated it.  The police department was the only people who gave a crap and investigated it.  They investigated the bite nothing but the bite.  Didn't do a home inspection, didn't invade our privacy (not that they would have found anything if they had).  But the police did a better job and cared more then Child Welfare could ever have a concept of doing.  Or should I say, Child-We-Really-Don't-Care-About-Their-Welfare.

So I say let's get rid of case workers who think they're better then everyone and above the law and place chldren in abusive foster homes.  Let's get rid of child welfare and use our police who are real trained professionals.  Also to the parents, grandparents, and everyone who have to worry about how others raise their kids.  While your watching my kids your kids are committing the crimes you complain about and leaving you grandkids to raise.

I am  a happily married 44 year old woman that just happened to turn on the television and catch the story of "Ed" being told of his time spent in foster homes.  All of a sudden my stomach started churning as I recalled my time, (7 months) spent in a foster home when I was thirteen.  My sister and I were taken from our parents and placed in a home that consisted of 7 foster children and 3 biological children.  People that have their own children SHOULD NOT have foster children without first doing some heavy research about what kind of children they may be fostering and what kind of 'SPECIAL' attention the children may require.  I grew to hate the Department of Human Resources and anything associated with fostering abused children.  I hated my foster home. On one occasion I watch my little sister be taunted by the other children as she lay in the floor to have a diaper put on her because she still wet the bed....she was 12 yoa.  This did not have to be done with an audience of cruel children but it mattered to no one but me.  There is a lot more but right now I can't think about this period in our lives without becoming emotional.......By the way my little sister never recovered from her abusive childhood and relied on pain pills and alcohol to deal with the emotional scars on her life......she passed away 4 years ago from an overdose of prescription pain medication.
