Twenty-seven million people worldwide are the victims of modern-day slavery: They are forced into sex or back-breaking labor against their will. Most of the victims lured into this criminal world are innocent children -- maybe even your own. Last year, slave traders made more money than the profits of Google, Nike and Starbucks combined. A new documentary, Call + Response, features a few of  Hollywood's leading actresses who feel passionate about this injustice. United Nations Goodwill Ambassador and featured actress in the documentary, Julia Ormond, joins Dr. Phil to share her firsthand experience of witnessing human trafficking and what she -- and you -- can do to put an end to it. These atrocities are not only happening in other parts of the world. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, more than 17,000 people are trafficked into the United States every year. The filmmaker behind Call + Response, Justin Dillon, goes undercover in San Francisco and discusses what he witnessed. Could it be happening in your home town? You might be surprised by what’s uncovered?. Then, police in Texas recently found a 16-year-old girl who was allegedly smuggled into the state with the promise of love, only to be locked in a house and forced to sell herself at least five nights a week. Hear from an FBI agent who sheds light on the case.  And, Tyamba was a straight-A student who ran away from home at 13 and was lured into a teenage prostitution ring. Find out how she broke free and what her life is like today. Plus, hear from women who were forced to be sex slaves in a sex ring, and meet two women fighting to help get child prostitutes off the street. Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

10/10 Child Sex Slaves

Quote From: ktsetsi

I wrote an article recently on sex slavery and why women are such a palatable commodity, not only in other parts of the world, but in the United States. Advertising and media play no small role in helping us see women as objects for use - and misuse.

Gender experts and professionals in the field of women's studies contributed to the article.

Not an easy question to answer is why our country, considered by many to be a progressive nation at the forefront of securing individual human rights, is one of the principal destinations for 14,500 to 17,000 women and children trafficked annually for the purposes of slavery.

In a 2004 Trafficking in Persons Annual Report, Miller noted that information on slavery is inexact, but we believe that the majority of slave victims, in the neighborhood of 80 percent, are of the female gender. He added, We believe the largest category of slavery is sex slavery.

Ms. magazine reported in the summer of 2007 that sex trafficking is one of the most profitable crime industries in the world second only to the drug trade and that U.S. trafficking victims are most prevalent in New York, Texas, Florida, and California. The question now becomes, how is it females have come to be considered a viable, and apparently an even somewhat palatable, commodity, particularly in the United States?

  Yo Dr.Phil,

Make this a major topic to repeat and stay on top of.You have more power than you think,If you stay on top of this story "weekly" you will make a differance. You have spent a lot of time on individual familys,One family you might of over helped, but ,that`s not what I`m writting on.We have to lock up the pigs that pray on people. These people have problems that need to be taken out of our "normal world"and Taught new ways of thinking.I am not perfect and do need correcting from time to time.I do seem to blend in with most life styles with out any major problems.I am close to normal as I think I can be.

These stories on kids that are prayed on and abused make me sick. Not enough seems to be done.

You can make a differance.  Thanks.....  Roy

10/10 Child Sex Slaves

I was so upset by this show i couldn't even watch it. I was appauled that parents would allow these things to happen to their kids. I think the people doing it the pimps and the parents should all be locked up for allowing this to happen to these children. i have a 12 year old and I would never let anything like this happen to her.

Thank you for not glamorizing it

I too was a child prostitute and consistantly people seem to think that we 'like it' 'ask for it' and should be able to 'just get over it'.  i felt your show did none of the above.  I applaude the courage of those who participated in the show and to Dr Phill for getting it right this time.  p.s I loved the song...and cried my heart out

16yr old law

I don't know about the u.s. but in canada if a 16yr old runs away from home and falls into such a situation and is held by such a captor, they cannot be made to go home because canadian law says they are old enough to be on their own and the parents are held responsible for them just the same.  how can we help them if there are laws to prevent us from it?

Journalist working with trafficking

Dr. Phil - I work as a journalist with media to bring stories on trafficking to the public. It's amazing how many people just haven't been informed about the degree and the large crisis in human trafficking that surrounds all of us today. In the US we think we are immune to this. It's important to remember that the western world and the US is known as a trafficking DESTINATION for over 80 countries that are involved in the ongoing and very active slavery trade right now. I did notice that one of the mothers who made a comment earlier mentioned that things are much worse now that they've been before. I can tell you from my own research this is true and not true. The history of human trafficking and sex-trafficking shows us that the sex-slave trade has been around much longer than the US has existed. It really is thousands of years old. One case of trafficking in US and international history reveals the use of "Comfort Women" during World War II in the 1940s. Today many of these comfort women are in their 80s and asking the government of Japan to publically apologize for their kidnapping and forcing them to "service" Japanese soldiers during the war. The rapid rise we find now in human trafficking today (especially sex-trafficking) has happended because of the internet. Human traffickers are placing ads each day in countless numbers on endless websites using ads that mention "pretty ladies," "Ukranian brides," "beautiful women" "nice women to date". "women companions" etc.... We need to remember -- fuel for sex-trafficking is the ability to stay ANONYMOUS online. A buyer of a girl can stay completely anonymous from the point of answering an online ad to paying and actually interacting with a trafficked girl. All of this is part of the everyday business of trafficking. Until we STOP the online ads we cannot stop the rising tide of human slavery. How can we stop this use of the internet? By compiling detailed and accurate documentation of advertisers who are in fact human traffickers -- and then by turning this documentation over to the online companies that are hosting these ads in addition to turning over the information to the US Dept of State. Public outrage against the advertisers feeding this industy must be made. - Lys Anzia - Women News Network - WNN

NOT FOR SALE

THANK YOU DR PHIL & JULIA ORMOND & JUSTIN DILLON

THANK YOU so much for having this show and for raising awareness on this issue. I too am out here working to raise awareness, but this topic persists in being a topic no one wants to talk about. At the same time, the number of men and now women using online sex services and prostitution is climbing daily with no check and balances in place in American legal or justice system, no regulation, and no law enforcement. I have begun to wonder if prostitution is really legal in America online? And do the users of porn online know what is going on behind the scenes to make the images of what they are getting off to?

I am just an average woman living in today’s commodified consumer based culture where it often seems that everything is for sale. I would never have known about this issue either, except for knowing the wrong man. I, like many women, have been the victim of pornography and prostitution through my ex-fiancé/boyfriend who I caught just after he proposed marriage to me. I caught him using online pornography extensively and seeking prostitutes online some as young as 15 years old on Craigslist, and The Other Board among other sites like Adult Friend Finders and more.

Hundreds of these sites exist with no regulation, and they advertise their illegal commodities (flesh for sale or hardcore xxx) under the privilege of the First Amendment. Does calling them "escorts" instead of "prostitutes" allow this to go on all over the web with no law enforcement? If so what’s in a word? We all know what they are selling. You can Google for an escort and find thousands of search responses doing a basic Google Search in under .09 seconds: [Results 1 - 10 of about 26,300,000 for escorts [definition]. (0.09 seconds) Google Results].

Still, Its hard to believe that in the time of HIV/AIDS people are even more callous about having random sex with strangers and prostitution than ever. I always tell men I am meeting that I do not date men who have one night stands, have a history which includes one night stands, or have paid for sex, or have ever cheated in a committed relationship

PLEASE VISIT MTV's IS YOUR SEX LIFE:
http://www.kff.org/youthhivstds/upload/MTV_Think_IYSL_Booklet.pdf

The CDC is reporting that 1 in 5 adults now have some form of STD at any given time, herpes is the most common. AND everyone still dating should understand and learn about HPV (common genital warts - 99% of us has some strains of this - but having more sex partners increases the chance of making this dangerous, condoms do not stop it, as we get more and more strains of it from each partner - keeping in mind that you are sleeping with each person your curent lover has slept with too, which makes having a sexual past history or record from each partner really important, I thin we should have a dating resume -you can't get a job without a resume, why should you get sex without one!!! ) as it has recently been related in research studies to cancers in both men and women.

I tell men proudly that as a woman I would not date someone who has more than a handful of intimate partners, engaged in one night stands or hookups with strangers, has ever cheated on anyone ever (and this includes lying, and lying by omission), or who has had paid liaisons. I am looking for that honorable man who has respect, integrity, and character in every area of his life, and especially his love life and I know how hard this is to find in a world where everyone is for sale. I’d rather be single.

Internet Trafficking and Predation is now a silent epidemic - Please visit these links to learn what you can do...The stats show that nearly 90% of women "working" in the sex industry have been raped or molested in their life times. There' something disturbing about this trend toward making a group of society's most sexually traumatized individuals our erotic role models....-Pamela Paul, Pornified

The First Amendment does not protect obscenity.
Paraphrasing From Dr. Gail Dines Lecture at Denver University 2007:
"What does democracy look like when a handful of corporations control the cultural discourse? What does it mean to talk about Free Speech in a society where 30 seconds of speech costs $330, 000 in prime time? Free Speech is now the most expensive commodity in our media driven, corporate society. In a media culture (Howard Stern driven) the only way to be heard is through access to this media. We are only as good as our culture. The pornographers have hijacked this culture, and they did it without a battle. But there comes a time when we must ask: At what point can society no longer tolerate this? We cannot hand this culture over anymore. We all deserve better than a porn-culture. It's time we really fight back. And its time that we no longer get sold on this shallow argument that we are against free speech, when we are take a stand against pornography and sexualized violence against women and children and ultimately men too."

See the Marilyn Monroe film: The Misfits
In a world where everything is for sale, anyone can relate to the issues addressed in THE MISFITS with Marilyn Monroe who herself died of a broken heart, pimped out by the high paying men in her life. Considering that wage slaves have replaced slaves, we would all know what the phrase "anything is better than wages" implies! One of the major themes of the movie is also prostitution (selling what is sacred for "wages") -- though very subtle, Marilyn's character is a "dancer in night clubs" - a stripper, or erotic dancer we all assume b/c in those days such things were not spoken of in a direct manner. But she has herself been "for sale." The ultimate brutality is selling the sacred feminine, this makes life cheap. It is one of the worst corruptions of Western society and we are all blind to it right now. But if we each educate ourselves there is hope of turning this blind ignorance into knowing better and doing better oneday. really shows how the voices of nature need to be heard and understood by men, and what happens when men use their brute strength to silence this wisdom. I love how setting free the wild horses becomes a metaphor for this wisdom and for setting all of the characters in this free from the albatross of "a wage based value system" which makes of all of us prostitutes and murderers - pimps and whores...the animals of this planet and all living things deserve to be treated with the most profound respect we can learn and teach ourselves – this is having a contract with all that is sacred – but our world is increasingly losing sight of this, nd its wrong, and we know it and we all do - If men will not listen, to women as life bearers, and to nature, then we all lose, and the world is brutalized and polluted. I love this quote from the film addressing the largesse of the eternal inner victim: "You could blow up the world and all you'd feel is sorry for yourself." – Marilyn Monroe’s Character.

ALSO, what this does is ruinous and devastating, beyond rape - and people are sexually gratifyng and relieving themselves to this horror - again a devastating death of empathy and disconnect between the sexes.

Please read the Truth Behind the Fantasy....[Excerpt]
"The truth is there is no fantasy in porn. It's all a lie. A closer look into the scenes of a porn star's life will show you a movie that the porn industry doesn't want you to see. The real truth is we porn actresses want to end the shame and trauma of our lives but we can't do it alone. We need you men to fight for our freedom and give us back our honor. We need you to hold us in your strong arms while we sob tears over our deep wounds and begin to heal. We want you throw out our movies and help piece together the shattered fragments of our lives. So don't believe the lie anymore. Porn is nothing more than fake sex and lies on videotape. Trust me, I know." - Former Sex Industry Worker

ALSO watch the trend toward hardcore xxx as it increasingly enters the mainstream consciousness since no one is taking this issue very seriously now: "People who view it on a regular basis need more and more graphic stuff and eventually they dig a hole for themselves," says Abel. "They need more and more to get aroused." www.reuniting.org

How to Make Love Like a Porn Star: A Cautionary Tale
Jenna Jameson Neil Strauss http://www.southendpress.org/2007/items/87767

"There comes a moment in every life when a choice must be made between right and wrong, between good and evil, between light and darkness..."

Review From Publishers Weekly:
With its wit (the book is dedicated to Onan), its victim narrative (multiple sexual assaults), its celebrity dish (Howard Stern is actually well endowed), and its frank, one-fisted prose style ("After three hours of sweaty, psychotic sex, she handed me a huge black strap-on"), the queen of porn's autobiography is destined to become a lowbrow classic. Jameson's career began at 16, when she fell for Jack, a tattoo artist. At a party, Jack's neo-love uncle raped Jameson. Unable to face her father, a Las Vegas cop, she moved in with Jack. Within a year, she went from high school cheerleader to stripper to nude model to porn actress, with a stop along the way to become a crack addict. Jameson's life wasn't so much a downward spiral as a freefall into darkness.

But, as the porn world would have it, the harder she fell, the more everyone wanted her, and she quickly became a top nude model and porn star, and the country's highest-paid feature dancer, all while leaving a path of carnage worthy of several rock bands. Beneath Jameson's monstrous diva exterior, however, was a girl who just wanted to become a loving mother and wife. After many failures, she finally succeeded, and her X-rated book ends on an uplifting family-values note. Jameson's life was a mess, and with its multiple formats (interview transcripts, movie scripts, advice sidebars, diary entries, cartoon strips), so is this book. But it's a remarkably appealing and honest mess, and should earn Jameson some of the mainstream acceptance she so clearly desires.

Worldwide tragedy: U.S. not immune to sexual slavery. Women's issues are still in crisis as well around the globe. In many nations around the globe women cannot take care of themselves and are given no recourse to do so. They cannot read or write, do not know their rights, have no voice, cannot vote, cannot hold property, run a business, or establish financial or land holdings. In many places women still have no rights, and can be legally raped and murdered. In some places in the world if a woman turns a man's marriage proposal down she can have acid thrown into her face marring it forever. In some countries in Africa and Asia they still practice clitoral mutilation.

Prostitution, the oldest profession, sees 1 in 3 women in Africa contract HIV/AIDS while working to feed their starving children and in Russia the incidence is also very high. These women are selling what should never be bought or sold and no man of honor would participate in letting this situation continue, much less suppress the voices of women with the courage of conviction to speak out against these crimes against humanity and against women the world over....

A Man Speaks Against Pornography
Listen here to to Robert Jensen's discussion of the reach and impact of pornography in US society...Paraphrasing from Robert Jensen:

"Porn is used to get men in the mood to kill - military Connection."

"Pornography and the death of empathy : men are being trained to ignore the expierences and feelings of women. Women in pornography are systematically subjected to cruelty and humiliation. This is a death of empathy. This plays out in public contexts all the time. its a serious problem in this culture. In a predatory corporate capitolist system, we have to constantly struggle to reconnect as human beings.

The First Amendment does not protect obscenity.
Paraphrasing From Dr. Gail Dines: 'What does democracy look like when a handful of corporations control the cultural discourse? Life is Cheap...

when sex is for sale and human flesh is a commodity. We as a society cannot continue to tolerate this legally, ethically, morally, or spiritually.

Life is sacred. We need to also learn in our society how to have a contract with what is sacred again. Not a legal contract, or a law to make us do what is right, but a higher consciousness so that more of each of us know how to do what is right and live by RIGHT ACTION and the precepts inherent to its code, so that we know better than to pimp each other out and commodify what is sacred.... But this is the lesson where are here to learn and evolve with today too.

We have lost touch in a commodity based world with this level of being....other cultures, even those we would now consider primitive did this better than we have. See Caroline Myss on SACRED CONTRACTS or read The Tao Te Ching, The Koran, THe Talmud, The Bible, THE SUTRAS, Prana Yoga Vedic Texts, or any other mind-body-spirit connecting paradigm.

***The culture of empirical rationalism born out Cartesian dualism is a red herring that has now thrown us off the track of ourselves for centuries, this is not our only way to access wisdom and truth. We need to reconnect to all that is sacred and reconnect with our innate wisdom....see Eckhart Tolle, A NEW EARTH for more definitions on how to do this.

It’s about raising consciousness so that more laws are not the only reason for people to do what is right.

it's all about money

It just makes me so mad to hear about all of this happening in this country of ours. but it all comes down to money. My daughter and I talk about this daily. It is so sad when there are so many people out there with millions of dollars and are more worried about getting themselves another fancy car or a big diamond ring for themselves or someone else to comment on, then to be helping out these people that need the money. It would be so great to have the money to be able to help the homeless, these poor girls and so many others. There are things happening in China too where you can have only 1 child or you have to pay a big fine. So children are sold and stolen because the rich can afford them and the poor can't afford their own children.

If I had the money like some of these actors or millionaires, I would be out there feeling the bellies of the poor myself and making sure it got there. You sure think that instead of a $50,000 dollar  ring to look at and say oh, pretty, it would be a heck of a lot better feeding a ton of people that night and knowing you gave someone a safe place to sleep.

there are only so many things a person needs in life, and beyond that it is for show. Why not help out people that need the help and make them happy and yourself at the same time.
