(Original Air Date: 10/16/08) Imagine waking up one day and having no recollection of anything or anyone. What would you do? Four years ago, that was the fate of a man who now calls himself Benjaman: Found beaten, naked and unconscious behind a Burger King in Georgia, Benjaman didn't even recognize himself in the mirror. Although he can't recall his past, what does Benjaman say he knows to be true about his life? Katherine, a nurse working at a health facility, took him in and is working tirelessly to help him discover his true identity. Dr. Phil put private investigator Harold Copus on the case. Did he determine Benjaman's true identity? Is Benjaman suffering from a severe case of amnesia? Dr. Barbara Knowlton, professor of psychology at UCLA and Dr. Frank Lawlis, chairman of the Dr. Phil advisory board, shed light on this condition. Then, meet Holly, who not only suffers from amnesia, but is also fighting another condition that has dramatically hindered her life. Find out how she has been able to move forward. Will the advice she offers Benjaman inspire him to keep putting one foot in front of the other? Tune in to see if you recognize Benjaman.

Find out what happened on the show.

website with Benjamin Kyle information

I think that this has been mentioned in one of the previous responses, but it was posted a couple of days ago. There is a website called websleuths.com.  There is a section called Unidentified, and there is a section devoted to Benjaman Kyle, There are numerous pictures of him in one of the subheadings. (or whatever you want to call it)

Back checking on Ben

I came back today to see if there was any news on identifying Ben.  I so hope someone has seen him and recognizes him....he is so sad but what a wonderful thing for him to appear on a nationally recognized show such as Dr. Phil.  I am so hopeful he will be identified and that whatever has happened to him isn't much more horrific than the terrible beating he was given by a TOTAL coward. I abhor violence!

Knowledge of Restaurant Equipment clue?

When reading further information about this man "Benjaman Kyle" he appears to be someone who knows a lot about Restaurant equipment and the industry of cooking. Could this man have been an owner/ employee of a commercial restaurant equipment or repair company? Also, the date that this man was found behind the BK dumpster is very close in time proximity to the loss of a man on the sea during a hurricane which occured in August of 2004. If that was the case, this man, Benjaman Kyle would only have been lost for a period of about 24 days prior to being found in the USA. He would have suffered the amnesia originally for a period of only about 24 days before being found, and has since not recalled many memories. Surely the scars on this mans body would suggest that he may have suffered some sort of accident on the job and maybe a disability claim was made during that time in his life. Can the USA find records of insurance claims made by men of this age group, where such injuries and surgical procedures have taken place? can hospitals be contacted to go back to 2004 or prior to that time? Have any rewards been posted for those who beat him?

I was wondering if any rewards have been posted to try and locate the people who may have beat this man Benjaman Kyle? surely something was seen or heard during those early hours of the morning prior to Benjaman being found behind the BK dumpster? According to something I read he was located near one of the main highways as well. Could he have been dropped out of a vehicle or thrown at the side of the road and then wandered over to the dumpster while in a semi conscious state of mind? maybe some clues to his condition could still be found near the site where he was found by the BK employee? L.

A Recovered Memory Survivor's Perspective - 2

I think benjamin and other serious amnesia suffers may be just farther along on an amnesia continuum than I have been. I have previously written about my problem on this message board. Anyone interested in my story can read what I have written by searching on my identification, beeboo22.

I realize that it might not be good for Benjamin to read my previous message board entries or even what I have written in this one. But, if he feels up to it, I would encourage him to read these entries, especially the ones about Post Traumatic Stress. I hope if he does read them he finds some of what I have written here helpful.

This last summer I spent some quatlity time going into my recovered memories. Even though before I started I felt prepared, I did find myself distressed by some of these memories. Although it may have been a bug, it was when I got into these distressful memories that I spent two days in bed sick. Dr. Phil may be correct that it would be better for Benjamin to rebuild his life with his amnesia than to try to recover his memory.

For some time I have wanted to write on this message board about the case of a woman from our area who had amnesia similar to Benjamin's. I saw this case in the media a number of years ago. I did not know this woman personally, I only know what I saw and heard about her in the media. Because of my memory problems I was interesed in her case.

The media reports said that this woman, originally from our area, was found living an entirely different life in another state. She had no memory of her previous life in our state. The amnesia included loss of memory for her family and childhood. But the comment I found most interesting was at the end of one of the presentations about her. The question was asked why this happened. The answer that was given said they thought it might have had something to do with the Green River Serial Killer. I believe there had been some limited professional connection between her and him which might explain his possibly targeting her.

I want to be very clear that this is speculation on my part so the conclusions I make about this case may not be valid. But, when I go into my recovered memory, I think I came very close to doing what this woman did. When I started to suspect that I was being targeted by a stranger who could be "The Killer," my world became unsafe. I felt at the time that few people, even ones close to me, understood my plight. At that time I considered my options on how to deal with it. I think I was considering the well known "fight or flight" response. To protect myself I think I actually considered leaving town. In doing this I could have tried to prevent this stranger from finding me by getting rid of my identity. If I got rid of my identity it would only have been a small step to dump my memory and thus become a total amnesia suffer too.

In other words, if a woman has the good fortune - good because it allows her to take defensive actions - to suspect that one of these killers is after her then leaving town without her identity and memory can actually be a survival tactic. Few people, even people close to her, would understand what had happened.

The more we know about any condition and its causes the better able we are to prevent and treat it. I write this here because I think it is worh considering.

Updates

I hope the show does an update or posts info on the website if Benjaman finds out who he is. I can't believe that someone out there isn't looking for him just as hard as he's looking to be found.
