(Original Air Date: 10/20/08) Sixty-five percent of American households report playing computer and video games, and surprisingly, the average player is 35 years old. Computer games are supposed to be fun, but when a hobby turns into an obsession, virtual fantasy worlds can ruin lives and wreck marriages. Juli says her 34-year-old husband, Fred, plays computer games all day and ignores his entire family. Fred admits to spending up 10 hours a day in a cyber world, but will he call it an addiction? Fred’s stepson, Brandon, thinks Fred is lazy and that his mom can do better. Then, Brad, 40, was so addicted to games that he spent up to 80 hours a week locked in the basement with his computer. Not only did he accumulate close to $24,000 of debt, his addiction nearly cost him his marriage and his life! Next, Liz found her 21-year-old son, Shawn, dead at his computer from a self-inflicted gun shot. She says that a role-playing game in the virtual world transformed her son from a vibrant young adult into a depressed introvert, which ultimately led to his suicide. Liz founded Online Gamers Anonymous to educate others about the potential dangers of obsessive gaming. Then, when Wendy married a video game designer, she literally took matters into her own hands and started playing herself.  Are you or is someone you love at risk for video game addiction? 10/20 Virtual Chaos

Quote From: fabrat

I have 2 boys ages 14 and 11. They both love video games and the oldest loves the rpg games. However I have a very strict rule of no EQ and no WOW. I have heard way too many stories of addiction associated with these games. I have rules for video games in general. On nice sunny days my kids are required to spend at least one hour playing out in the sun. They also have to keep up with school work and bring in good grades to even play video games. On the weekends if we go somewhere the psp stay at home. If then have done chores then they will likely get several hours to play video games. Now my youngest would rather be out riding his bike or playing with friends than to play a video game. My oldest is starting to like riding a skateboard. They still love games but they see there is more to life other than games. My 16y/o daughter started talking to this boy she knew from school. At first it was fine they talked every day and for long periods of time. At one point he told her that she was the only girl who made him want to stop playing WOW to spent time with her. She refused to talk while he played that game. After only about 2 weeks or so his calls became shorter and shorter and before long he was right back into that game. He has only 1 good friend and has never had a girlfriend. I think that's really sad. Parents need to take time to teach their kids that there is a lot more to life than video games!!!!!!!!!!
As a gamer, and a player of Warhammer online, I applaud your efforts. THESE GAMES ARE NOT FOR KIDS THESE GAMES ARE NOT FOR KIDS THESE GAMES ARE NOT FOR KIDS. I would never let a 15 year old play an MMO. This is an adult's game, and honestly after a long day of school/work when you just want to sit down and kill some Bright Wizards (who are super OP btw) I really don't want to deal with kids when I play. They can't contribute anything, never play their classes right, and generally ruin the experience for everyone else.

On a serious note, gaming, especially MMORPGs, are a great way to chill out and play with friends. My friend met his girlfriend playing WoW. Its a blast playing with your friends and it's a very social game (For the record, I play Warhammer, not WoW, Warhammer is more player vs player focused.)

Honestly, Blizzard is doing EVERYTHING in their power to make WoW noob friendly and more casual. There is no excuse for someone to be spending 80 hours a week on that game, or any game for that matter. Blizzard has created the most succesful MMOs in history, and they are truly some of the greatest game developers on PC, or any platform for that matter.  WoW is succesful because its a good game. Personally, it bores me to tears, but 11 million subscribers can't be wrong.

Let me explain this to the parents again: its not the game's fault. Its not Blizzard's fault. The game is not evil. Blizzard is comprised of some of the most talented developers in the games industry and makes so much money each year they could probably buy the Dr. Phil show if they wanted to (and use it to promote WoW! I kid, I kid.). My point online game addiction is the result of little to no self control. For the love of the Raven God (Warhammer refrence :D) PLEASE TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR KIDS. ITS NOT THE GAMES FAULT ITS YOURS. Unplug the computer, do what you have to, or at least make him pay the $15 subscription fee by getting a job.

Yeah, it isn't the game's fault

Yeah, the game has no fault whatsoever.

By the way, I'm formerly an Eastern Human Bard of Freeport known as Lynata, a level 60 powerpath Minstrel with 1236 class mastery points. On the playstation 2 version of Everquest Online Adventures on the Mar's Fist Server.

Yeah, it's not the game's fault that it takes 24 hours of gameplay over two days 12 hours a day to gain just one Class Mastery.

It's not the game's fault that Skaynir and Lady Vox only appears (spawns) two-three times a month.

It's not the game's fault that Noxxious, Twins, Cazic-Thule, and others spawn even less than that, and there's always more than one household (guild) scouting their spawn points.

It's not the game's fault that after level 45; quest mobs spawn more typically between five to fifteen minutes to appear once.

It's not the game's fault that it takes at least 20 players minimum to kill level 60 epics

It's not the game's fault that four years ago; the development team admitted character inbalance and begins class balancing forcing players to place even more time to develop their character at even the most basic elements of the game.

It's not the game's fault that content above level 45 consists of requiring killing a single type of mob many many times for a single item to drop and requires the player to repeat the process an additional four more times.

Just to make sure, I'm on the same page. The game's designers/producer should not take any responsibility for deliberately programming a game several factors to guarantee that a player must dedicate excessive time to attain a sense of accomplishment.

If you're not a gamer, this is how MMORPGs work.

The game begins with a Continuous Positive Reinforcement. Players level their characters rapidly or gathers class mastery points rapidly.

Then, the game begins using a Fixed Ratio Method of Positive Reinforcement. Players begin leveling/cming less rapidly. And then less, and then even less until it takes 24 hours of game play to achieve a single level or class mastery. After that, it takes even more time to accomplish the same success therefore sense of accomplishment.

These game's thrive on this design.

The players must take responsibility too.

We're not weirdos, just want to say it...Or maybe we are but hey...

My whole life I've been into video games and technology. From the moment my hands played Pong I was hooked. Videogames were the stepping stone into the future. And I love them like I love my favorite authors or recording artists or films. These are not simple games either. There are skills required to play them. They require you to think and work as a team. The only downside to them is that they aren't physical. I think that there lies the rub. Because people sit on their butts the whole time, society feels it's not as good as going and moving around. I'll give you guys that one, but somedays these games will truly be immersive and people will become physically active in them, because that's the ultimate immersion experience.

Unfortunately, society thinks we're weird because we like 'fantasy' instead of real life. How is the guy on this show different from the Sport Junkies out there who spend every waking moment worshiping some team? Or NasCar fans who decorate their entire home in honor of Jeff Gordon? I think the most ridiculous sport of all is golf. No wait...I take that back. Curling. That's the most ridiculous sport I've ever seen. Let's agree that anyone who turns their whole existence into something other than the family and friends they can actually touch, needs to figure out why they are doing it.

As to the instances of someone who died because of a game, my heartbreaks for them. But again, this isn't any different than the person who thought that there were voices when the record was played backwards. These are all lost people looking for meaning. And there's no denying it's sad. But I don't blame the game. I don't blame anyone. Sometimes people just get lost and it always easy to look backward and say "this was what was wrong.

I just hope that people don't assume that it's the game's fault. I feel that people who get obsessed with anything to that degree are simply not finding life satisfying enough. They need to find the joy in themselves and the world around them.

Now, I am going to cook dinner for my family, eat dinner together, clean up together, and then afterwards, I'm going to log online and start kicking some butt. At least until my tv show is done taping and then we're all going to watch it together (AS A FAMILY).

Quote From: thrall

I am Thrall Warchief of the Horde,

Hello Dr. Phil, I have gotten word from my messengers and scouts in the fields of this so called "Hollywood". I am not pleased with the information they have brought me...

Warchief! we have gotten word that a great witch doctor from the lands of Holly wood is trying to disrupt the arcane energies of one of our members, we must act immediately and crush this madman"

So i have come to talk peace with you witch doctor, leave our people alone. Actions in which you are taking are direct violation of the treaty act wrote after the third war. We will not take kindly to your insolence and pestering into our matters. I have sent many a ret pally to the gates of your fortress to sway your actions. Any more such actions against our people will cause me to call forth the word of mass divine storm. Leave the world of azeroth alone, you are the shadow.

I say this for all of us who actually have to deal with the addict, this is not a joke. Your comment is not funny. These games actually tear apart lives!

video games and epilepsy

If you read on most games, esp the  ones that are flashy, it will tell you if you have epilepsy not to play that it can cause seizures.
Even though that is not what happened to Liz's son, I think it is something that parents don't know or overlook because their kids want it.
I have epilepsy, I didn't play the games but my   my sons did, we didn't realize the danger to me until  I had a seizure watching my sons play.  We also set limits, they couldn't play in their rooms and only 1 hr a day and 2 on weekends.

10/20 Virtual Chaos

Quote From: tawnee69

After living together for a year my partner went visit his parents and came back with wow.

After a year of being together and no sign of gaming, he jumped straight to 8 hours a day.

He got sucked.  We tried scheduling play, we tried certain days, then times, however promises were always broken.

Even his best friend would bitch about the amount of time he spent gaming and then lo and behold my ex got him sucked in too.  They are both now hooked.

So yes, it can start just like that.  Maybe don't mention things like that unless you know for a fact.

Same type of thing happened to me, So, yes I agree, it can happen out of no where. A couple hours a day is fine, but 8-12 hours a day is crazy!!!!!!!!!!!

10/20 Virtual Chaos

Quote From: efffy_

This reminds me of the D&D phenomenon in the 80's. There were kids killing and being killed by people involved in the game. People were staying up all night missing work and classes. There was some getting involved with Satanic stuff too. There were uproars all over, especially on college campuses. The game was banned in places which was ridiculous and never stopped the game. Instead of blaming the problems on people that were ill or evil the game was blamed. This game was played with books, dice and imagination. I remember some people being overly involved and always trying to get a game going, and years later I found out several of them were on medication or in jail. Do we blame books and dice? Ive known people that are obsessive about fishing, and have been divorced because of it. Evil fish! The Parker-Hulme murder was committed by two girls caught up in an obsessive fantasy world they created in written stories. (Hulme is the very well respected Victorian murder mystery writer Anne Perry)  People will always go off the rails if they are predisposed to do so. I think Ill go play my records backward now ;-)

Back in the 80's my husband's parents thought D&D was a cult because they saw something to that effect on TV. He (at 12 years old) sarcastically asked his parents "You think Dave Brown and I are a cult?" The two of them played D&D in the basement together.

So far as I know, they never worshipped the devil, they just played pretend battles. They did the same thing with action figures and army men, only there were no books and no dice and no one thought THAT was a cult. Your post made me laugh, remembering his parent's reaction to D&D. :)

Please talk to your parents or a trusted adult

Quote From: icreeper

I was a thirteen-year-old Internet addict.

(I still am thirteen.)

And, I know you may be thinking,

"Oh my god, what in the world is that girl thinking!? Posting her age? Oh, unheard of."

But let's face the facts, huns.

Everyone does it,

And nothing is really going to change that.

But anyways,

Dr. Phil, I honestly love your show!
Really, I do.

And today's episode was pretty cool, because I was like that.

My parent's just did not get it.

They did not get the fact that, contrary to what you even said, you can have Internet friends.

And quite honestly, I they thought I was crazy.

So, they had me go see a therapist  . . .

But it wasn't solely for that purpose.

Apparently I was 'angry' too, but that is off topic, and thus I will skip it. (:

I was on the computer,

and let me mind you, this was from the 23th of July to the 30th,

A grand total of 29 hours, and 45 minutes.

Ridiculous, correct?

Yes, even I think so.

Anyways, I've cut down, so that is a good thing. (:

But, I just wanted to say, it is kinda scary. . .

Being in that situation where you think you need to know what people are doing all the time.

Sad thing is, my Internet addiction has probably slowed because of my new texting addiction,

But never mind that.

I'm pretty much just rambling, but please mind me.

I have one more thing I want you to try to understand.

You can. . .

And I know you will automatically disagree with me claiming,

"They're just a bunch of pixels!"

But no, seriously.

You can have Internet friends.

Absolutely, positively.

I know it's 'dangerous', and all, but I have about . . .

Seven Internet friends that I would be willing to meet at this very moment.

I've talked to eight people on the phone, from just meeting them online.

And I've meet to many people to count (just in 'pixels').

I consider four people online to be some of my 'best friends'.

Yeah, just some facts.

And, it's not like I'm one of those geeky nerdy kids who only talk to online kids.

I was -Laughs- believe me.

But now, I have many many friends. (:

Three of which I consider to be 'best friends'.

Anyways, before I make your eyeballs bleed from all this 'nonsense', I'll let you all alone.

Thanks, Dr. Phil.

Oh, just a p.s.

About what you said about those 'personal messages'.

I get them a lot.

You just ignore them after a while.

Wanna example?

"tell me what on your mind said:

you not into watching guys on cam doing stuff?"

Translation into normal English;

"You're not into watching guys do stuff on cam?"

Msn, darlings.

It happens more than you think.

Creepy, eh?

Yup, and  guess what?

The guy is 25.

Talking like that to me.

A 13-year-old girl.

I said good bye. (:

And blocked him.

LOVE YOU, DR. PHIL 8D <333

Tootles <3

At least tell them about the guy who is 25 who make the "watching guys on cam doing stuff comment".   What he did to you is a crime and he is probably doing it to others as well.  He could seriously hurt someone and ruin lives if he hasn't already.    He belongs in a jail cell.

How do you know your internet friends are who they claim to be?   They could easily be a different age than they claim to be.   Do you know what has happened to other people your age who have met in person with online "friends"?    Do you understand that at thirteen there are certain corners that you can't see around that someone older than you can?

Please watch Dr. Phil's show about texting and driving.  Hopefully you are not driving yet, but please remember this show and all the lost lives who are real people with families, before you ever get behind the wheel.  When you do make sure you don't text while you are doing this.

I hope that you will not take this the wrong way, just understand that I am writing this out of fear for your safety.
