(Original Air Date: 10/23/08) Do you text message while driving? It may seem harmless, but distracted drivers account for nearly four out of five crashes in the United States, and looking away for just two seconds doubles that danger. Still, nearly 50 percent of drivers between the ages of 18 and 24 continue to text behind the wheel. Twenty-one-year-old Heather boasts that her multitasking skills are so fine-tuned, she has no problem texting while navigating the road. Dr. Phil cameras capture Heather driving with her hands off the wheel for more than 60 seconds. Next, Linda discovered the harsh reality texting while driving can cause when her daughter, Lauren, was killed by a driver distracted by his cell phone. She created the Web site HangUpSaveALife.com in her daughter’s memory. Then, Francisco was a survivor of the recent L.A. Metrolink train crash that killed 25 people, and Roland rescued Francisco from the wreckage. Hear their reaction to the National Transportation Safety Board’s reports that the passenger train’s engineer sent and received 57 text messages that day, and that he sent a text just 22 seconds prior to crashing head-on with a freight train. Dr. Travis Stork of The Doctors weighs in regarding accident victims in the E.R. And, State Senator Joe Simitian wrote the bill that outlaws texting while driving in the state of California; he debates with State Assemblyman Chuck Devore, who is opposed to anti-texting laws. killer texting

I believe that texting should be banned in all cars and also use of the mobile phone.  In England there is an on the spot fine for using your mobile phone.  You cannot concentrate texting while you are driving, your eyes are not on the road and your mind is on texting.

Texting While Driving

I feel that texting while driving should be banned.  Two weeks ago a 17 year old young man was killed while texting.  It has stunned the entire community of Saratoga, Wyoming.  He lost control of his car, over corrected and rolled down the embankment.  His last message he sent was to his girl friend while he was on his way to the football game.  His jersey has been retired.

I don't even like to see people on their cell phones while driving.  My husband refuses to talk while he's driving.  If our phone rings, I take care of the call.

Text Msg'ing Should be Outlawed!

I am saying this as a person who texts while she drives. I think that it should be outlawed.  Too many times I have found myself swerving. When I text I watch the road.. I don't have to look at my keypad...BUT, I will text what I need to say to whomever I am texting to and then I will realize that I do not even remember driving through wherever I was driving.. Like a certain town.. I will wander if I even went through it because I was so distracted by text msg'ing. Anyways, with that being said, I know that it's stupid and after watching Dr. Phils show yesterday I realize that I need to quit doing that.. especially considering I have 2 small children who go with me in the car. I would never be able to live with myself if something happened to them.. especially when I was the cause of it. I think that texting should be outlawed when driving but NOT talking on your cell phone. If my phone rings when I am driving I usually just look at the phone and if it's from someone who I fear something may have happened, as in an emergency, then I will answer it... If not I just ignore it until I pull over.

Enforce the Laws

When I got my license many years ago there was a clause that stated to keep BOTH HANDS ON THE WHEEL when driving. The positioning of the hands at that time was 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock, since then I believe the positioning has changed.  If this was enforced to keep both hands on the wheel while operating a vehicle, with the exception of shifting gears, wouldn't we have helped solved a lot of arguments regarding the use of cell phones, texting, applying makeup, eating, etc. We always have the option to pull over and take care of business when necessary. Driving is a serious matter and one never knows what will be coming their way and when. One needs to be totally aware and COURTEOUS when driving, and if you are texting or chatting on the phone you are unable to do either effectively, it really doesn't take a genius to figure that one out.

Today I am almost in a wheelchair because I have had three drunk drivers slam into my rear end while waiting in traffic or being parked. Yes I am lucky to be alive, but I am in constant pain and have a lot of mobility issues, and uanble to work, and I am not even into my sixties yet.

God Bless the families that have lost a loved one to such a tragic accident, no one can even know  the pain they are suffering, unless it has touched their lives.

Makes me nervous

I have always been nervous in a car when someone is using their cell phone, either texting or calling someone. Now that I'm a mommy, its even worse. My boyfriend doesn't do it when our son is in the car but other times he will. I'm constantly nagging him to just wait til we get where we're going. My family and friends know I don't like it and I forbid them to do it when my son is with them, but how do I know that they are following my wishes (when I'm not there)? If something happens to my baby due to someone being careless on their cell phone, you better believe I will opt for the highest punishment they can receive.

IT IS DANGEROUS! DON'T DO IT!!

In His Distressing Disguise - the Wired Word

Dear Phil,

I would like you to read my research article in regards to your show with the Senators ;about the use of text messaging, phones, radios and any electronic devices that are distractors on the road.  The article is on my Web Page www.geocities.com/farnsworth.deborah.WiredWord.html.  The article is about Protecting Children.  The incident in this study that is on my web page is only one of other(s) I believe.  My paper is dedicated to Mrs. Jean Denkins, who died crossing the street, while going home from doing her grocery shopping.  Her groceries where reported to be all across the road, when she was hit.  The police officer at the scene of the accident called the EMS and she was taken to the ER.   Jean Denkins died in the emergency room.

Sincerely,

debfar

Cell phones and texting while driving

As a person who has used a cell phone and has done texting while driving in the past, I highly agree that it is very distracting and should be controlled. Text messaging while driving should be stopped completely. Since it's unlikely that cell phone use while driving will ever be outlawed, it should be limited to wireless only. Obviously this would be a nightmare to enforce. Since cell phone companies seem to be able to come up with hundreds of options that most of don't ever use,  you would think that they could devise some sort of motion sensitive program or something similar that would shut off the phone when a certain speed was reached, unless there was a wireless devise connected to it. The program would have to be designed to allow use of the phone when other forms of travel were used.

There is a solution

I am so tired of hearing about bans and laws.   They don't work.  There is a technology created by www.trinitynoble.com which prohibits texting while vehicles are in motion.

Laws will not work

With the technology that is available today it should be/is possible to detect the motion of a vehicle and send a message and/or just shut down the cellphone , ipod or any other device.

This would work and prevent this unnecessary problem.

I think more laws would not be enforceable and a waste of time and taxpayers money.

Makes no horse sense

Quote From: barrelracr

Dr. Phil: I had to laugh when at the end of your show today you said we should not be texting even when riding a horse! I am curious as to why? I never text. I have texting blocked on my phone, but I ride horses almost every day, and I carry a cell phone in my pocket, even when I barrel race! More then once it has rang when I was actually racing, and my horses are so accustomed to it that they never even flinched! By the way, I agree that texting while driving should be banned! I think it is very dangerous! Love ya! God bless!!!

LOL...I agree, that's just silly about not texting while riding a horse.  Maybe if  you're not riding in a playground and texting, most horse people tend to not ride in high traffic areas and if danger lurks you can simply say "whoooooaaa".  I'm not buying this one.

But, for the love of mankind, if people don't believe all these testaments of cell phone tragidies on this board, even from the truck driver who quit driving because of cell phone accidents, we might as well give up our cars and get a horse.  Just don't text while riding.  I don't think they said we souldn't talk on the cell and ride a horse did they?
