Dr. Phil tackles the sensitive topic of children who identify more with the opposite sex. What do you do if your son wants to wear dresses and play with dolls? Or if your daughter tells you she wants to be a boy? Should parents chock it up to being a phase that their children will grow out of, or should they intervene right away? Meet Melissa and Tim, whose 8-year-old son declared himself to be a girl when he was just 3 years old. Now, they allow their child to live as a girl and wonder if and when they should begin hormone therapy. Then, when Mary’s son was 8, he told her he felt like a girl, and Mary allowed him to experiment with dressing as a female. Now a teenager, her son is more comfortable living as a male -- but Mary wonders if she caused his confusion. Joining the discussion are experts with differing points of view: Dr. Dan Siegel, professor and clinical psychiatrist at UCLA School of Medicine, and Glenn Stanton, author and research fellow with the organization Focus on the Family. Is gender identity something we’re born with, or is it influenced by parents and environment? Don’t miss this heated discussion, then talk about the show here..

THE A*ME*R*i*CAN DREAM

Dear U,
My name is Caira J. Hyde. I'm just a musician that knows a man that has a plan. I can't speak his mind and I can't speak the words that he speaks. He doesn't know how to use the technology in this world. So I am writing you to inform you of information that has been kept hidden from the foundation of the world but has been given to one man to give to the world. This information will change the consciousness of this planet. That man that I know, has thousands of drawings. These drawings are proof of what we are. There are stacks and stacks of them waiting to be given to the world, but what good is a gift if no one will receive it? After all, it's free for everyone so why not reach out your hand to him? He is looking for you. You is anyone that can hear him. He is looking for something he already has, in you. Got Faith? It says in the bible "when the son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?" He is still waiting for someone to acknowledge that he is exists. He had the same dream every night when he 14. In the dream there were people all around him, but no one could see him and no one could hear him and he couldn't hear anything. In his dream he didn't exist. He found himself living his dream when he came to Venice, California. That's where I found him. He had been waiting for someone for over 3 years. Now we are in Iowa, and he is still living in his dream where no one can see him and no one can hear him. It is more like a nightmare for him. So it's up to you. It's up to you to share this with the people you know. It's up to you to make peace happen on the Earth. It's up to you to tell him your ready to listen to the truth. It's up to you to send him a reply and let him know that you're out there. He will respond to you. He is waiting.

-Caira

P.S. We have been waiting in Iowa for 4 months. I thinks time that we put our heads together and give this world the change that it's been waiting for. The change we need.

10/29 Gender Confused Children

Quote From: jennyg82

Your above posting is so close minded and foolish. I know many gay people who had perfect wonderful childhoods and family life. It's close minded people LIKE YOU who do emotional damage!
I totally agree with you, this type of attitude and ignorance is the same thing as verbal abuse.

FOCUS ON THE FAMILY

i am late to my son's halloween party, but i have to say something. asking Focus on the Family to share their research on this topic is like asking the KKK to share their research and perspective on interracial marriage!!!!!!  could dr phil not  find a more reputable research source??? i think i am so fired up about this b/c i love dr phil, but as a west coast liberal civil right person, and a LMT therapist, I've been unclear on dr phil's feeling about gays and lesbians.(which is not today's topic). he seems awkward. of course, so far, i have seen extremely bizarre gays and lesbians on his show. young woman pissed off at her parents, gay men cheating on their wives, a narcissistic pig of a transgender father and his 2 daughters: a creep man or woman.!!  i'd love it if he had on gay families raising kids, or 'out' politicians. perhaps i've missed these shows. but if he considers Focus on the Family as an expert on sex/identity issues, then it is all over between us. i will be heart broken, as it shows his bias. such right wing organizations breed hypocricy : live your life in this one way, and portray only this as 'right', but live your secret feelings and desires is the most extreme perverted ways. have you noticed that these moralists are the ones who are caught in the most EXTREME behaviors. when they stray they stray way far away. so dr phil, say it isn't so. i have not read these message boards prev, i hope there are some levle headed people here. some other message boards are full of jr hi IQs and silly off the wallcomments. im counting on a conversation.

Maybe..

Quote From: deborahkay52

I am so upset on parents like that couple on the show today.  No child that young knows for sure what they want.  It sounds like to me, the Mom just wanted a daughter and I think a lot of what that little boy said was put into his head from his Mom.  I think that the Dad is acting like Adam did, in the Garden of Eden, and allowing his wife, (like Eve did), to lead him to follow her actions.  He should have a brain of his own to know what is right and what is wrong.  It sounds like she has influenced him a lot, too.

She should have done like the African-American couple in the audience said what they did, or would do, if their child ever hinted at something for the opposite sex.  All of the parents of children should do as the African-American couple said on what they would do.

Parents have the biggest % of influence over their children.  They need to be reading the Bible, also, and  actually read and understand what it says.  It says in the Bible in several places about how God does not approve of homosexuality.

God meant for boys to be boys and girls to be girls.  Any true Christian would know that.

After that child reaches adulthood, then those kind of sexual preference problems are between that person and God.  That grown child will have to face God on Judgement day.

But, the parents are the ones who are to bring up the child in a good Christian way and as God expects them to, and to teach their children what God wants of them.  Those parents are going to have to face God on Judgement day, if they don't do all that they can to teach the child what God wants, and instead go along with what the child wants.

The couple on todays show, are a real dissapointment to the way that people are supposed to be.

Maybe God created a girl with a boys exterior. Some children are born with both sets of genitalia. Who gets to decide whether children with ambiguous genitalia are boys or girls? Isn't it the mind and spirit that defines a human being, not the flesh that surrounds it? Who made you God's official spokesperson, anyway?

10/29 Gender Confused Children

Quote From: jbennett

Nice to know someone finally realizes that just because a child "wants" something or "likes" something does not mean we as parents should give it to them. If they want to smoke or drink as a child because they feel like it should we as parents let them? Or do we guide them away from it. If the issue is too big then go get professional help to guide them. Don't just give in to things that are bad for them because THEY keep asking. Get real a three year old has no way of knowing how to make these types of decisions....Isn't that what parents are for?
This isn't like telling a child no when they ask for a piece of candy, or if they want to stay up late. Parents should be the biggest sport and biggest cheerleader in their children's lives while guiding them through life, not shaming them and telling them their feelings aren't right and their feelings won't be tolerated.

10/29 Gender Confused Children

Quote From: kmattrn

Here's a way to put this whole thing into persepective:  Would you let your 11 year-old decide to have sex with another child?  Would you let your 8 year-old decide to get married?  Probably not.  And the reason is because these are life-altering decisons with huge consequences.  A child at these young ages -- as Dr. Phil has said on previous shows -- is not capable of making such life-changing decisions.  A human's brain is not fully developed prior to adulthood.  Saying, "I don't want to be a boy anymore; I want to wear girls' clothes, etc" is a choice, a decision.  You don't come out of the womb knowing what girls' clothes look like, or what toys boys play with; it is learned and socially induced, right or wrong.  Parents choose to dress their boys like boys, and girls like girls.  If, as a child grows, he decides he wants to start wearing girls' clothes, he is making a choice; it's not a biologically programmed behavior.  Certainly, one would have to agree that deciding to change one's gender identity is a life-altering decision.  And so I ask, why would you allow your child to make that decision?

Life-changing decisions need to be made by a person in adulthood.

And anyone who would choose to physically alter the biological sexual make-up of a pre-pubescent child should be charged with child-endangerment.

That is so not putting real life into prospective!!!  No parent ever lets their children have sex, doesn't matter what age they are!!!  Well if that parent is sane!!!  My point is, kids are having sex younger and younger!!!  and not all parents know about it!!!!  Did I go to my mother when I was 17 and tell her, beforehand, hey, I'm going to go have sex it happens!!!  If that child is raised right than no they shouldn't have sex that young!!!! Girls get their periods at 8, these days.  Hormones changes, making girls having to mature quicker than boys due to having their period so early!  Yes, the parent did choose to let their son wear girl clothing play with girly toys!!  BUT, they did it for a reason!!!  1st 3 years, he dressed as a boy, played with boy toys, than even after he expressed the whole girl situation, they still tried to press you have to be a boy!!!!  You know how hard it must've been for the father to not be able to play football or whatever, stereotypical thing a dad does with his son!  But he realized when his son wore a dress to a halloween thing for school or whatever, he saw the glow on his face, he hadn't seen him that happy!  Not with boy toys, boy clothes etc... so as a parent do you keep pushing being a boy, doing boyish things?  Making your child depressed or do you love and cherish your child?  I have a 20 month old who walks around with my purse on his shoulder but also, plays with his older 6 year old brother's action figures, spiderman, etc.. and he crashes cars too!  Both my boys, played with a doll, and my younger one now plays with it, he kisses it and puts it to sleep and feeds it.  All boys should be given dolls, I gave him the little baby one, to teach him how to treat people, he's really nice and caring.  So should I take that away from him, because he may turn gay or think he is a girl some day?  No, I'm not!  Because, he's happy and seeing my children smile and laugh makes my day, makes me smile and laugh.  So, I wish everyone was just like me, even the Christian parents, and the ignorant people/parents, that are so against the parents who had to decide this.  Seeing my kids smile and happy; I don't spoil them with possessions, they are happy to play with a sock and whatever.  The point is, a good parent nutures, unconditionally, supports, disciplines, shows them the right direction with life!  You teach your children to be leaders not followers, to be their own person, to be themselves!  Not what the world around them as they get older, would stereotypically hate if they were gay, or if they were transgender!  Or if you're not white, than you're not quite right ,<---tgere are people out there that do that!!!  That is what is wrong with this world and the USfreakingA.  No one respects other peoples' beliefs, cultures, race, because, it isn't what they teach themselves or what they grew up as or was taught!  Because it's wrong, I will not judge someone elses upbringing but I'm not going to judge someone total existence.  Because, they would not exist if it wasn't for their mothers and fathers.

You must not know very much about alcoholism

Quote From: dpwtchr

But you can overcome this. I used to be an alcoholic and my GOD delivered me from alcohol. Do I still have a desire for it? Sometimes! Do I still "wake up and "decide" to (take a drink) - I used your quote only inserted my "vice".... the wake up and decide is the key here.... if you truly love GOD, you will heed HIS word which talks of SIN... and SIN is SIN... so yes, when I choose to sin I can't blame it on MY desire, or HOW I was born or whatever excuse you want to use.... sin is a choice, and I choose GOD - who makes NO mistakes, and who can deliver me from SIN!  If you think this makes me close minded or narrow minded, that's ok, cuz HE also says in His word that Narrow is the road that leads to life (Matthew 7:14)...  You have a choice.

Those who have been medically diagnosed with alcoholism----is a real physical disease.  One has LOST the choice.  Good for you that you can choose.  You will KILL the alcoholic who needs help, so please don't try.

10/29 Gender Confused Children

My heart goes out to the couple on today's show, I have no idea what I would have done if faced w/their situation, nobody knows unless they've walked a mile in their shoes. I would have tried to be as understanding, compassonate and knowledgable as they are.  I was blessed w/3 boys, all grown now.  However when they were growing up they goofed around with my high heels and played dress-up, even put balloons under their t-shirts for fake boobies, Big Deal, none of them are gay, they were playing. [This is for you Muslim parent's on the show] All three of my boys had Cabbage Patch Kid babies too!!  Are you kiddin me that playing with certain toys means someone is going to become gay or makes them a sissy? Whatever!!  My husband of 28 years works at the railroad and was gone alot of the time during their growing up.  It was up to me to be the decision maker, mother/father, friend, etc, and I think I did a damn good job. BTW all 3 played Varsity Football in H.S.  I raised my kids to be responsible, kind, caring [christian] adults, and to be respectful of whatever other ppls gender relations are, you see they have a Aunt and a Uncle that are gay. They accept it, and love them and their partners.  Too bad there are so many ppl out there that are ready to crucify anybody that's different than they are.  The world would be a much better place if there were more compassion and understanding, and fewer stones being thrown!

Why the Inconsistancy?

Dr Phil has, in the past,  had shows that have featured young men and women who have had body dysmorphia and anorexia/bulimia.  In these shows you have people who truly deeply and passionately believe one thing despite the fact that their physical circumstances say some thing totally different. (For example:  someone who looks perfectly normal can truly believe that they are horribly disfigured or someone who is of average or below average weight and build may see themselves as disgustingly obese.)  Why are these seen as obvious disorders which are treated with medication and therapy and something like gender confusion is seen as a choice.... for a 3 year old to make...?!  I can see no difference in the external circumstances of these groups and I wonder why its ok to treat these (body dysmorphia and anorexia) as mental disorders but we aren't allowed to even broach the idea that maybe someone who is physically a boy who believes that they're a girl might also have a mental disorder.  Instead we're considered enlightened and wise if we let them be what they believe.  Should we then let an anorexic starve themselves?  Should we let someone with body dysmorphia plastic surgery themselves into collapse so that they can make their external characteristics match their internal perception?

I have never once seen this comparison made on the Dr. Phil show or anywhere else and I wonder why that is?  I'm calling Dr. Phil out on this one.  Let's talk about this.
