Dr. Phil tackles the sensitive topic of children who identify more with the opposite sex. What do you do if your son wants to wear dresses and play with dolls? Or if your daughter tells you she wants to be a boy? Should parents chock it up to being a phase that their children will grow out of, or should they intervene right away? Meet Melissa and Tim, whose 8-year-old son declared himself to be a girl when he was just 3 years old. Now, they allow their child to live as a girl and wonder if and when they should begin hormone therapy. Then, when Mary’s son was 8, he told her he felt like a girl, and Mary allowed him to experiment with dressing as a female. Now a teenager, her son is more comfortable living as a male -- but Mary wonders if she caused his confusion. Joining the discussion are experts with differing points of view: Dr. Dan Siegel, professor and clinical psychiatrist at UCLA School of Medicine, and Glenn Stanton, author and research fellow with the organization Focus on the Family. Is gender identity something we’re born with, or is it influenced by parents and environment? Don’t miss this heated discussion, then talk about the show here..

Find out what happened on the show.

10/29 Gender Confused Children

Dr. Phil, There was so much arguing! I would have liked to hear more of what the experts had to say.  They were insulted and interrupted so much!!!!
no kidding - it doesn't matter who agrees with what. The show was supposed to be about 'discussing" the issue - but instead we heard BLAH BLAH BLAH from toni. It would have been nice to actually hear both sides from the professionals!!

10/29 Gender Confused Children

Quote From: renandy

I'm 55 twice divorced 3 kids 4 grand kids. Estranged from all family because I am a high functioning Borderline Personality Disorder. One of the symptoms of BPD is gender identitity. I was told in 1980 that I had a disorder called transgender and I should just have surgery and live as my brain said. However I have for years tried everything Dr. Nicollsi said and had at one time even called him on the phone and read his book. Gender Identity is Nothing like homosexualtiy and NO 75% of GID individuals do not become gay. I as others hate it when we are classified in the same group as such. I have never been nor ever tempted to live a gay lifestyle. When I was a little boy I wanted to be just like my dad. I followed him everywhere I could, played army, sports and read about being a soldier in the army. Yet I still felt like a girl from age 5. No one knew but me until after I was married with our first child on the way. So the argument about just bonding with men does not hold water here to someone who is a true transgender person. I did everything you could possibly do to live as a man, including College Football, 6 years in the Military, getting  Married and having 3 kids. Nothing ever worked. I have been to more counnselors, psychologist, psychiatrist both Christian and non-Christain. Any and everywhere my parents or wife woud drag me to including a week in Colorado at a Christian ministry at Dr Solomens GRACE Church. I am deeply spiritual and have a great personal relationship with my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In trying to do the manly think I also studied to be a minister and am ordained. Still the femenine would not leave. In the year 2000 during my 2nd divorce and an overdose of medication from my clinical depression. It was a do or die move for me. So for the last 8.5 years I have been living full time as a female. AS long as I don't tell anyone about me I fit in just fine. i've been on female hormones for over 20 years. I have worked at many different type of jobs because in the mid-west it is not how well you do your job, its when they find out through social security that you had a name change from male to female, they all of a sudden do not need your expertise. I have even passed the National Board Exam for Licensed Professional Counselors, but the state level won't license me because my education was Christian and not in a secular regional credited school. Regardless that there wasn't and isn't any classes in my expertise that are taught in regionally accredited schools. So my whole life has been a catch 22 one way or the other. The gender argument HAS TO BE a one to one individual case and yes I'd suggest waiting until after puberty to make any finsal decisions as to what direction to go. It didn't make any difference in my case, but in a confused individual it may. God Bless
I agree with you. Let the child grow up a bit and then before you start that hormone therapy or whatever. When they are old enough then they can make their own decision. And at least they would know that their parents love them and tried to do what was best.

Gender Identity / sexual orientation

Gender identity and sexual orientation is not the same thing. Do not treat identity with the same treatment you would use for a transsexuals orientation case. leave hormones and surgery for the adult. There should be lots of discussion with the child about gender identity so when they become an adult they can make an informed decision. Do not treat a human child like your pet animal in order to get them to behave in what they may feel is a foreign environment.

10/29 Gender Confused Children

Quote From: neon8l

   Dear Dr. Phil,

I am less inclined to watch your show  of late. Today was an example of such. I watched the episode with the mother of a young child who is gender confused. I found Toni to be attention seeking and wanting to be the only one heard. One time you asked the 2 fellows seated opposite her to not edit her reaction. Though they were not allowed to speak and give their expert knowledge in their field  and /or  their opinions. Toni often interrupted with anger and sarcasm. Interviews and guests like Toni maybe more appropriate to shows such as Jerry Springer, which I think shouldn't be televised.

In closing , I agreed with the views of the endocrinologist and peadiatrician at the end of the program. Hoping to see more open minded  discussion with everyones view point heard.

                                                                                                                          Regards, S.F.

i agree 100% Those two men were professionals and deserved to at least give their opinion. The show was not about her and whether she agreed with what they had to say. She was a guest and should have been told to shut up

I just watched the show, and was quite disappointed that the topic became so one sided. I was very interested in hearing more about the type of therapy the Focus on the Family physiologists were offering to these families. Unfortunately they were not able to speak openly about their work, and were quite rudely interrupted by everyone on the show. I feel as if they were unfairly represented but the mother, the other psychologists as well as Dr. Phil himself. To be fair I think Mr. Stanton and Dr. Nicolosi should have had a mother on their side of the panel whose son had gone through their therapy, so we could hear her story as well. I felt that Mr. Stanton and Dr. Nicolosi were treated with complete disrespect and ignorance and were not given a chance to speak, let alone explain what they do to help families. Very disappointed in this shows one sided approach to this subject!
I think the fine conservative Mr. Stanton and Dr. Nicolosi said many times that the Focus approach was to foster more bonding between the parent of the same sex and the child. Maybe he did not say more because there is not any more to say? The thinking does seem simle.

Unless of course you would have liked for him to talk more in depth about how negative his views are towards gays and transgendered people,

But you could see that already. Right?

10/29 Gender Confused Children

Quote From: zuzubird

I agree with those knowledgeable ladies who understand that a person is born with her sexual orientation, and should never be cast out or made to suffer because of it, any more than a heterosexual person should be.  It is not a choice; I know I did not choose to be heterosexual--I just turned out that way.  If a young child displays some gender confusion, we must lay off the God trips and accept the child for who she is at all stages of her life (or his, as the case may be).  The idea that God hates certain persons and loves others is a human idiosyncrasy, and it's wrong to frighten a youngster with this stuff.
i agree! i was born lesbian. i didnt choose to be. Transgendered people are they way god made them. in the wrong body! i think people who claim they are christian and are hating the LGBTQ community need to really look at themself and ask WWJD. he definatly would not protest anything with a sign saying "GOD HATES F*GS"  love thy neighbor. isnt it in the bible?

What a train wreck

That show was a complete mess.  Dr. Phil, if you wanted to present both sides of the issue, why put a mother who has already made the decision about how she is going to proceed with her transgender son in the middle?  Ratings?  I am a conservative parent, and thank goodness I am not dealing with this issue in my house.  But, if I was, I would want to exhaust every option before deciding to allow the child to "phase".  After all, Dr. Phil stated that only 15% of the children that deal with this, deal with it into adulthood.  I wanted to hear more from the doctors who were treated so rudly.  They have obviously had success in helping many families, but we were only allowed to hear from them when they defending themselves from attacks.  Just because they represent traditional morals and values, they were automatically the villans on the show.  This show is exactly what is wrong with the world, and watching it infuriated me.

Gendered Confused Children

Quote From: phonemommy

I have never posted on any board but was so angry watching this show that I decided I needed to vent and found this board.  First off, Dr. Phil, I'm very disappointed in your handling of the show.  You sat there like you were afraid of that mother.  She was allowed to rant and rave and say whatever she wanted to the two doctors on the other side.  But, when they tried to stick up for themselves to her, you scolded them on their reaction  to her answers.  Where was your backbone?  Did you leave it in your high-heeled pumps?  Second, the mother was completely rude, obnoxious, and was obviously correct about anything and everything (at least in her mind).  If you are going to have a show about a very controversial issue then let both sides have equal time.  The show definitely was not about gender confused children, it was about angry parent of gender confused child.

I feel sorry for the boy.  He will have a tough road ahead of him. God forbid he gets on the wrong side of that woman.  He doesn't really need to have a dad, because she obviously wears the pants in that household.  I don't know much about this condition  and thanks to Dr. Phil just sitting there, looking on blankly with his fingers under his chin, i STILL don't.  I only got to hear an angry mother telling off two men that obviously care about children or they wouldn't waste their time on the show or studying this disorder.

My prayers will be for the little boy that he is able to live a happy, healthy productive life no matter which way he turns out.  And, Dr. Phil, I'll pray for you that the next time you are faced with a situation like today,  that you will find your voice and guts to step in and take control of your show and your guests (even if you are intimidated by them).

I just posted a long discussion on this but I lost it.    So........ditto!      I would like Dr. Phil to consider another program presenting both sides clearly and giving both sides the time to do it.    To me, this program was disappointing.

10/29 Gender Confused Children

Quote From: dusk357

I feel so strongly about this that I couldn't even wait until the end of the show to speak up.  I was a single parent for several years with two sons.  The two guests on the show claiming that boys being too close to their mothers is a problem are absolutely ridiculous.  One of my sons was what people called "all boy" and the other had a temperament usually seen in girls.  He also asked for an Easy-Bake oven for Christmas one year and I gave it to him.  He was like a girl in many ways but never wanted to be one.  Both of my sons are grown now and they're both still male.  I encouraged them both in whatever interests they had.  Meanwhile, when I was a child, there was a time when I thought I wanted to be a boy because I didn't like the way girls got treated in society.  It was a phase.  I'm still female but I have a lot of male interests that nobody ever discouraged me from pursuing.  I have made repairs to vehicles and appliances and am currently doing major renovations to my basement.  Whatever our interests my whole family is still the genders they were born as depite the fact that nobody pushed stereotypes on any of us.  However, for some people it goes beyond interests and you can't make them something they're not.  I am so proud to say nobody stereotyped me and I didn't stereotype my children.  If either of them had decided in their teens that they were not the gender they felt they were supposed to be I would have gotten them counselling to see if it was just a phase, without discouraging them from being exactly who they are, whatever that may be, and to help them transition if that's what they needed.

ya... but we didn't even get to hear their side
