(Original Air Date: 11/11/08) How well do you know your teenager? Could your child be participating in risky or illegal activities right under your own roof? One popular teen trend is smoking or snorting the herb salvia to get high, and some kids have posted videos of their “salvia trips” on YouTube. Rebecca says her 16-year-old son, Jerry, smokes salvia and that he’s withdrawn and failing school. Jerry wonders why his salvia use is a big deal to his mother, because he says she not only allows him to smoke in the house, but she uses salvia too! Dr. Travis Stork, host of the hit show The Doctors, gives some sobering statistics on teen salvia usage. Rebecca and Jerry both say salvia, which is legal in most states, shouldn’t be outlawed in their home state of Texas. Charles Anderson, a Texas state representative, says he’s doing everything in his power to make sure this hallucinogenic herb is banned. What does Dr. Phil think? Then, the "choking game" made headlines when it was reported that teens were dying or becoming seriously injured by strangling each other until passing out. Britt fears that her son, Kevin, may be starting a new version of this trend. Find out what it is, and watch shocking footage of Kevin engaged in this potentially deadly activity. And, sex texting or sexting is a new trend where teens send explicit photos of themselves via their cell phones. One mom says she caught her 12-year-old daughter forwarding nude photos of herself to boys and wonders what punishment she should impose. Plus, find out what you should do if you suspect your teen is involved in risky behavior. Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

fire this mother

this mother needs to be taken away from her son.  she needs help herself.  what a joke, this woman is allowed to teach our children.  if she was my child's teacher and i saw this believe me my child would not enter her classroom again.  my husband is a high school teacher and what he sees every day is unbelievable and this just takes the cake.  this is why some people should not be allowed to bare or teach children.  this is a valid reason why tenure should not be around for teachers.  when her superiors see this and she has tenure they can't fire her.  my husband, who is a tenured teacher believes she is one reason why it isn't right.  drugs are drugs whether they be legal or not.  i really thought this show was a joke at first.  not sure i can watch this show anymore

a real teacher

Quote From: wonder_twin

As a fellow high school English teacher, I am absolutely appalled by the mother on your show who not only does Salvia herself but also buys it for her son!  I am not sure in what state she teaches, but in my state teachers are required to follow an ethical code, and her behavior is in direct violation.  Also, as a mother I am outraged.  She should be arrested for corrupting her own child.  In addition, if my child were in her class, after seeing her on Dr. Phil, I would demand for my child to be transfere to a teacher who is a positive role model, not someone who condones this behavior (not to mention this "teacher" can't even motivate her own child to pass the 9th grade three years in a row).  She is giving teachers a bad name!

You are the teacher I want teaching my child. I said the very things you just wrote  on this board out loud to myself as I was watching this show. Lets hope those in her school district saw this today and will terminate her for unethical behavior.

I fell in with the wrong kids at the age of 12 and smoked pot for two years failed 8th grade I had no one to blame  for my poor choices but myself. When I failed my parents could have cared less so I had to really look at myself  one day and say what do I want for myself,  where do I see myself in a few years.

I quit that day I I struggled to catch up  in school. I graduate highschool on time and earned a scholarship. This drug reminds me of LSD for the hallucinations and pot which takes away all a persons motivation to do anything but to get highand. Been there done that only I did not have a parent promoting the behavior. This so called mother/ teacher makes me sad and angry that she could inflict such a horrible thing upon her own child.

Not Your Friend, I'm Your Parent

I usually scream at the television when, after a heinous crime in a community, a news reporter asks a person living in the neighborhood where the crime occurred about their feelings on the crime.  The answer is usually: "You just never think something like this will happen in your neighborhood."  Most people go through life thinking that everyone lives their lives just like them.  They think everyone has the same moral compass and principles as they do.   So, when some abhorrent crime occurs in a house that looks just like theirs, which is occupied by people that look and, on the surface, act just like them, they're shocked.  As a cop for almost 30 years, there's nothing a person, young or old, rich or poor, black or white, can do that can surprise me.  People are capable of doing both stupid and horrific stuff.  All that to say the college educated, teacher mom who purchases and smokes salvia with her failing, faltering son didn't shock me in the least.  Been there, seen that a thousand times before.

Dr Phil has been good about bringing guests on his show that have either a new movie or book on the market.  In light of the fact many of the shows deal with kids, and adults with issues brought with them from childhood, I would enjoy seeing Dr. Phil invite E.D. Hill onto his show.  Ms. Hill, a mother of eight, five of her own and three step children, has a new book out titled, I'm Not Your Friend, I'm Your Parent."  Babies aren't born with a predisposition to grow into dysfunctional adults, that credit is most often attributable to the parents for a myriad of reasons.  Wanting to be a child's friend and not their parent (as we witnessed today) is at the top of the list.

WAKE UP!

Salvia aside, I see this idiotic  parenting behavior EVERYDAY as a school administrator.    "All he wants to do is play video games..."  WHERE DOES HE GET THE VIDEO GAMES?  WHERE DOES HE GET THE MONEY TO BUY THEM?  If your child is failing school, then his/her world needs to shrink down to the essentials for survival until they start doing their job of getting an education and then earn back their privileges.

And what about those obviously brain damaged teens who go to the amusement park....QUIT TAKING THEM AND PAYING FOR THEIR ENTRANCE TO THE PARK!!!

PARENTS - WAKE UP!!!  Quit indulging your out-of-control kids.   So what if they hate you for a couple of years??? At least they will be alive long enough to grow into adulthood and get over it.

Where are the DAD's of these KIDS?

I watched much of the show today .. had a few moments where I missed 5 or 10 minutes here and there .. and I am just wondering WHERE are the fathers???  Especially the father of the boy, with his teacher-mother, both getting stoned together?  where are the grandparents, the dad's?  Did she think by coming on the show she would be validated??  Her son, and herself .. they are a MESS.  I won't be surprised if parent's at the school were she teaches COMPLAIN and get her dismissed, and hopefully children's services will WATCH some of these shows, and step IN, and help these kids.  THESE kids are screaming for a PARENT to TAKE OVER and give them some limits .. discipline them!   For the girl taking skank pics and emailing them .. duh .. take the PHONE away, and then deal with the REAL issue of WHY she felt it necessary to do this ..    PARENTS --- get a  CLUE!

use common sense

The so called mother / teacher and I use those words loosely should be fired from teaching for ethical reasons. There unfortunately are no laws against  for being a dumb parent.

As for the cell phone issue if your kid is sextexting and you still want them to have a cell phone then have the texting and picture taking features removed. The phone should be for emergency contact nothing else hat's not too hard to figure out. Remind them that their future boss might goggle them and they  might not get that job, they may be flushing four years of college down the toilet.

For the  kids that are riding the roller coasters and passing out stop driving them to the amusement park. If they are driving themselves take the dang car away!  If they are eighteen and still choosing to do this kick their but to the curb. If they want to make those decisions then let them live on their own they won't  have much time for roller coasters as they will be to busy trying to pay the rent. This show should have be entitled the dumbing down of America

I only got to watch the show for about 15 minutes because I had to leave for work.  Why does the mother need help herself?  Is she on any other substances besides Salvia?  I wouldn't agree that someone that smokes or chews Salvia Divinorum occasionally needs help.  It's actually good treatment for people with depression/anxiety/misc mood disorders.  Giving Salvia to minors is very stupid, it should be reserved for those over 21.  I think it's silly to even discuss something like Salvia and say it's bad without really knowing much about it.  I can say morphine is bad, but it's really not.  It's bad if it's abused, I've seen people abuse it and it's horrible, but it can be good if used properly to treat people.   I thought the show was a joke at first too.  I thought it would actually provide some unbiased information regarding Salvia Divinorum isntead of the predictable scare tactics.

All valid points of course, but being a hard-ass is not always the way to go.

BARRIE, Ontario, Nov. 6 . The body of a Canadian teenager who ran away from home in a dispute over a computer game three weeks ago was found north of his Barrie, Ontario, home. Wednesday morning, deer hunters in a heavily wooded area 112 kilometres south in Toronto called the Ontario Provincial Police to report finding the remains, believed to be that of 15-year-old Brandon Crisp, Constable George Silvestri told reporters.

Foul play was not suspected although an autopsy was scheduled Thursday, the Toronto Sun reported.

After the discovery, the boy's father, Steve Crisp told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. the clothes police described on the body matched what his son was wearing when he stormed out of the house Thanksgiving Day, Oct. 13.

Rewards totaling $50,000 had been posted for the boy's return, half of which was from Microsoft, which also was assisting police in tracking the boy's online gaming history and contacts.

The boy's parents told him on the day he disappeared he could no longer play the interactive X-Box game, "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare," as he was skipping school and getting up in the middle of the night to play, the Toronto Star said.

Why do parents want to be kids friends???!!!

I don't understand this new trend, and a scary one, and that is parents that feel the need to be their kids friends. I have 3 kids myself, a 12yr old daughter and 2 sons that are 10 and 8. None of them are allowed on the computer except for school work, in which I supervise, none of them have a cell phone, although they don't think its fair cause all their friends have them. I personally don't see the need for a child to have those things. When they get old enough I may allow them to, but not now, they are all too young. I tell my kids, I am not here to be your friend, you don't have to like me, but you do have to respect me. When you are 18, and if you are the kind of adult I hope you will be, we will be friends then. When and if I do allow them to have cell phones and computer time, I will be invading their privacy regularly. I go through their rooms, backpacks and desk at school. Its my position that until they pay the bills and have their own home, they have no reasonable expectation of privacy. I do draw the line at reading a journal or dairy, but thats about it. I maybe wrong, but I know what I did as a teen and looking back now I wish my mom had been less of a friend and more of a mom. I explain to my kids why things are the way they are, and they understand it. They understand that this is my house and I make the rules, the rules can be followed and things will be great, break them and there are consequences to pay, such as grounding (they do have TV's, video game and a house phone in their rooms) all of those can and will be taken and there will be chores to do. Guess I've ranted long enough, its just frustrating to see all these parents asking for help when what they need to be told is be a parent, dang it, your not a teenager anymore!!

11/11 Risky Teen Behavior

Quote From: vptornado

i think that the mother should be punished even if its legal or not .

I can't believe this woman is a college graduate and actually teaching other peoples children.  Who in there right mind would allow their child to do any sort of drug that would make you hallucinate and fry your brain.

She should not be teaching other children, she doesn't even have the brains to take care of business at home.  UNFREAKING BELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I'm so discusted and furious that I can hardly see straight.
