School Lunches

Quote From: larisa67

My son's behavior changes drastically when he eats artificial additives (colors, flavors or preservatives).  He is on the Feingold Program which eliminates all these things.  We have had great success as long as I have complete control.  When he goes to school, I won't and I don't want to home school.  I don't know what to do.  Most school lunch programs are loaded with junk and additives.  I guess I could start now and try to urge them to make changes.  It would benefit the behavior and learning of all children to take this stuff out of their diet, at least at school.  Many, Many studies show that these additives cause learning & behavior problems.  You would think schools would know this and do something about it.  Maybe I can make them change.  We'll see!

If the school serves junk, I would attend every school meeting and go to the board and change this.  If the parents want their kids to have junk then they can supply it.  The school should not be supplying junk.  You would think the school wouldn't have chocalate bars and more things like muffins and carrots and yogurt.  You would have to find out what they offer and if they have junk, fight to get it off.  As for drinks you are probably best to teach your children to bring their own drinks.  I would imagine the school serves juice boxes which like you said are full of the crap you don't want them to have.

Here in Australia the school's are really trying very hard to have foods that are less in fat and sugar. As there is a big problem these days with children becoming obese and there is a higher risk of these children ending up with Type 2 Diabetes.

Also now in most school's here the teachers are trying a program that see's the children having more exercise time, meaning that they do more sports activities and such. All this makes alot of sense as children these days aren't as active as we were as children. The children these days rather play computer games and or watch TV then to go outside and ride their bike or go and play with their friends outside if you know what I mean!!

Also, it's up to parents to make sure their children are eating the right foods at home too. Try limiting take-away foods(Junk foods) to maybe once a week. And when you do get take-away you can get foods that are more healthy that say going to McDonalds or KFC.

Some suggestions would be: Thin crust pizza's from a Italian Pizza shop(not the likes of Pizza Hut). Or Pasta with a tomato based sauce not creamy sauces. If you have to have hamburgers go to your local take-away shop and buy their hamburgers as they have less fat in them than the likes of McDonalds!!

Anyway, when it comes to your children's health you should always want only the best for them. Lots of fresh foods like, fruit and veg's!!

By the way, just so you know I am Diabetic myself and I wouldn't wish this on anyone especially children. TAKE CARE. LOVE KELLY.

This year all of public schools that are around me are now eliminating "junk food", and "sugar" from their snacks and lunches. No more cokes, no more candy bars, notta. They are only serving healthy foods and such. They are also considering doing away with pizza at school. It is actually a good thing for my son because he just started kindergarten and he is a Type 1 diabetic. (insulin dependant). However, my teenager on the other hand isnt to thrilled. But I think they all will adjust to it. My son has alreaady adjusted to living his life w/o sugar unless an emergency comes up with him. Statistics show, here in America, every 3 out of 5 children now a days are developing type 1 diabetes. They have yet to determine what causes type 1 diabetes.

Just want to say that I can understand how you and your family feel about your son having Type 1 Diabetes. Back in Sept 2000 when I was told I had Diabetes the Specialist said that I had type 1 and I thought that I'd be put on insulin right there and then, but the Doctor put me on tablets and that worked very well until I became pregnant in Nov 2001 and then I had to go on insulin 4 times per day as the tablets I was on could be dangerous to the baby and also my blood sugars were very high due to what was happening to my body and so the insulin helped to keep the sugars under better control.

I had to keep my sugars very low right through out the pregnancy so that my baby would not become a big baby. And in so doing this I had alot of hypo's and hypo's can be just as bad as high sugars for anyone with Diabetes but worse for pregnant women with Diabetes.

After I had my little girl and due to not being able to breastfeed her I was able to go back to tablets and just have night time insulin.

So, I do have some understanding about what your son goes through each and every day of his life until they find a cure for Diabetes. Lets hope together that in your son's lifetime they will find it.

I do have a friend who has had Diabetes since she was 4 years old and she is now in her late 20's and is on the kidney and pancreas transplant list. Once she gets the new pancreas she will no longer be Diabetic and she just can't wait till that day happens for her, NO MORE NEEDLES AND BLOOD TESTS EACH DAY!!

Well hope your son stays well, make sure he keeps his blood sugars in good control.

TAKE CARE. LOVE KELLY.

of course

People can drive and use a cell phone at the same time.  How could they have rear-ended someone or stopped dead in front of them or side swiped them if they weren't in a car? LMAO

I am also passionate about the debate or lack there of, for the "secondary victim" the parent/s of the child.

I am 47 years old...my life was ruined by CSA...I suffer from depression, social anxiety and PTSD symptoms, and I don't even remember all of my abuse.  I only remember I was 5 and led out to the outhouse by an adult male.  I only see their p**is in front of my face and him saying, "touch it".  The next thing I remember I was in the corner of the back yard watching myself run in my little yellow nighty from the outhouse back into the house.  I don't remember much of my childhood...most memories are outside...I don't have many indoor memories.

Oddly enough, the sexual abuse of my son by my brother devestated me more than my own.  The wall of secrecy and denial was so powerful in my family it took me 17 years to tell my brother I did not want him in my life anymore.  I was gradually ostracized by the rest of the family.  I am totally isolated and alone.

Child Sexual Abuse destroys lives and I am writing this message because when I read the list of upcoming shows there was only one on this topic and it was. "have you been falsly accused of child molestation?".  I and some other parent's of sexually abused children in my online support group wrote to the Dr. Phil show expressing our concern that all sides of this story should get equal time...

so they changed it to "have you been falsly accused of a crime".  All well and good...we made a difference and prevented a show that would have validated molesters in denial.  But what about the children??????????????  What about the parents who are also traumatized that this has happened to their child.

I so wish my son was ready to talk about this...I would go on the show in a second!  He once mentioned Dr. Phil and asking for help with his marijuana addiction. I said I would write to Doctor Phil and then he quickly changed his mind saying, "No, I don't want to air my dirty laundry in public."  I told him he doesn't have any dirty laundry but he changed the subject.  Maybe someday he will be ready.  This topic needs to be talked about openly without shame and secrecy and stigma.

As another mother of a sexual abuse victim, I would like to thank you and your group for speaking out!!!   Also, would you mind emailing me information about your support group? I would be interested in being involved in something like that myself.  Thanks!!!

I totally agree

Quote From: jettav

Nursing mothers have absolutely every right to nurse their babies in public. As long as they are not exposing themselves, who cares!!! There are approapiate ways of doing it and being dignified about it. I did it anytime/where ever needed, and I was never ashamed nor was I embarrassed. I personally have never received any negative remarks but it was sort of funny watching the reactions. I remember once going to a Joyce Meyer conference and it was crowded, I went out in the lobby and sat in a corner where there wasn't hardly any one around, I would watch people as they did go by, Most women just kind of looked and smiled, the children stared as they were walking by, I guess trying to figure out what was going on (yes, I was covered), and the men, well, for the most part, they just looked away, not sure what they were thinking, but no one said anything other then a kind lady bringing me a chair, which I was appreciative of but was content where I was. :). And besides, It can't be as bad as watching young couples practically making out in public!!! Now, that is disgusting. People just need to get a grip on life, nursing babies is a wonderful experience and our littel ones deserve to eat regardless of where it is, if some one doesn't like it, then they can turn their heads and go on their merry little way.
I totally agree with you. I nursed my son as well, and if we were out and he got hungry, I just found a quite spot, sat down, covered myself and fed him. Now my MIL tried to get me not to do it, but there was no way I was going to be switching between the breast & the bottle, especially when he was really little. My MIL didn't even want me to breastfeed him at all, trying to tell me that formula was better and that breastfeeding was hard, and that he might not even take the breast, (and this is my first child). But needless to say, I didn't listen to her, and breastfed him anyways. So ya, I totally agree that there is nothing wrong with mothers breastfeeding their babies in public as long as they are discreet about it. I think it is a very wonderful thing to see and do for your baby. Besides, I've been out and seen mothers nursing, but to be honest, I don't really notice it right away, sometimes I only see it if I look again. I was eating in a mall one day, and there was this mother sitting 2 tables away, nursing her baby, and I didn't notice until she went to burp the baby because she was covered. I thought the baby was in the stroller! So I have no problem with it at all.

Funny that you say your MIL didn't want you to nurse at all.  I think the generation before us is like that.  My mother didn't want me to nurse either.  I don't think it was all that common when our parents had us.  My mom was not totally against it, but you could tell that she wasn't fond of it, she was the same with my brothers wife.  I breast feed my youngest two, but not my first.  I was 15 when I had my first one, so that could be why, as well as  I lived with my mom.

Praying For Healing

Teresa

I have many friends that I know that were abused as children. I work with many advocacy groups on my college campus to help victims of all ages. I pray for the healing of all the children throughout their lives to help them cope with this tragic loss of innocent that seems to be more common these days.

I also work with many police agencies to monitor online chat-rooms and perform sting operations to try to catch the perverted animals that insist on preying upon innocent people. With the help, strength and courage of many survivors, current victims and supporters we are able to put away as many as 20 sexual predators a year. It may not sound like that much, but we hope to get more and more each year.

I applaud victims and survivors for being able to look inside themselves and confront the demons that haunt their childhood memories. It isn't easy, but it is necessary in order to prevent the same atrocities from happening in vicious cycles.

I support and pray for you all. May you find peace, love and strength on your journey of healing.
