Parents, you may not know it, but there is a threat looming in your home. It’s a frightening and dangerous trend that affects the good girls -- cheerleaders, honor students and college graduates -- and law enforcement agencies across the country are up in arms. No longer needing to walk the streets to offer sex for money, young women are turning to the reputable Web site craigslist.com in order to sell their bodies. Next to the area on the site where you can buy a jungle gym for your child, you can access erotic ads, where young women post sexy photos and advertise sex for money. When Ashley was in college pursuing a bachelor’s degree, she never predicted that she would one day meet strangers for sex in order to pay off her student loans. She says she wants to quit the dangerous profession before something horrible happens, but thinks she’s addicted to the “easy money.” Crystal says she was also addicted to the money until she was nearly killed. Hear her horrific story and how her life is now that she has escaped the industry. Could Crystal’s tale be the wake-up call Ashley needs? Then, meet a mother who fears her daughter may be using craigslist to exchange sex for money. What can she do to protect her daughter? Sheriff of Cook County, Illinois Tom Dart and Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal weigh in. Lawmakers have formed a coalition to rid craigslist of its erotic service section, but find out why they’ve been fighting an uphill battle. Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

03/30 The Dark Side of the Internet

It is very sad how our daughters have to go make money to live. We have raised them to be materialistic, and the men(boys) want us for nothing more than sex. It saves us women from being hurt. Saves the wasted life of being cheated on, being lied to, and ending up with nothing but 10 kids to feed while men are out screwing other women.

I have been divorced for 20 years now and all the men I have dated in those years wanted nothing but for me to lay on my back. The last man I was seeing for the last 3 years was the only one I allowed in my bed, and guess what? He had a live in girlfriend. The way I felt during this time I should have been paid to have sex with him. If I got paid to lay on my back I wouldn't have to work 80 hrs. a week sometimes more just to make ends meet. I know many women that work 2 or more jobs and I have so many co-workers that do.

I wouldn't comndem unless I walked in their shoes. If dillussion is what they have been fed the young women are going to live the life they think is going to get them the most. Money is not all there is to life, a pretty face can be lost in a terrile accident, and a size 1 body doesn't stay that way cause we all get old...

Boycott Craiglist till they take off the link...

to their "Erotic Services" section. IF the link was not provided by Craiglist many illicit illegal activiites would be halted. Craiglist is making it too easy for this kind of access, and they exclusively control their site homepages, and the code that allows these links. In effect, they are not only condoning this, they are providing a venue for this, and that in itself is illegal. Prostitution is a crime against humanity. And it is a worldwide problem.

The First Amendment does not protect obscenity.

Paraphrasing From Dr. Gail Dines Women's Studies at Wheelock U: 'What does democracy look like when a handful of corporations control the cultural discourse? What does it mean to talk about Free Speech in a society where 30 seconds of speech costs $330, 000 in prime time? Free Speech is now the most expensive commodity in our media driven, corporate society. In a media culture (Howard Stern driven) the only way to be heard is through access to this media …We are only as good as our culture. The pornographers have hijacked this culture, and they did it without a battle. But there comes a time when we must ask: At what point can society no longer tolerate this? We cannot hand this culture over anymore. We all deserve better than a porn-culture. It's time we really fight back. And its time that we no longer get sold on this shallow argument that we are against free speech, when we are take a stand against pornography and sexualized violence against women and children and ultimately men too.' - Women's Studies Professor, Gail Dines PhD

A Man Speaks Against Pornography
http://www.southendpress.org/2007/items/87767

Listen here to to Robert Jensen's discussion of the reach and impact of pornography in US society...Paraphrasing from Robert Jensen:

"Porn is used to get men in the mood to kill - military Connection."

"Pornography and the death of empathy : men are being trained to ignore the experiences and feelings of women. Women in pornography are systematically subjected to cruelty and humiliation. This is a death of empathy. This plays out in public contexts all the time. Its a serious problem in this culture. In a predatory corporate capitalist system, we have to constantly struggle to reconnect as human beings."

It's just hard to believe that in the time of HIV/AIDS people are callous about having random sex and using sex industry services.

The CDC has reported the every 10 persons in Washington DC is now HIV positive. The CDC is also reporting that 1 in 5 adults have an STD and 99% of us has some strains of HPV, now the main cause of cervical cancer and potentially other cancers such as testicular cancer in men.

CONDOMS DO NOT STOP HPV. Having more sex partners increases exposure to more strains, which overwhelms the immune. CONDOMS DO NOT STOP IT. You are exposed to each person a partner had, which makes having a sexual past history important. HPV has recently been related in research to cancers in both men and women.

"Doing Dirt to women and children in porn is no way to prove your manhood." - Founder of Men Against Pornography

Avoid intimacy with those who are casual, who pay for sex industry services, or who lie. Wherever women/children are for sale and men are desensitized, life is cheap. If they do it to others, they'll do it to you. Take the NO PORN PLEDGE, OneAngryGirl Net.

Prostitution, the Economy, & Gender Inequality...

Recently I have heard jokes on all the major late night TV shows including, David Letterman, Craig Ferguson, and Jay Leno referring to this. Jay Leno stated on 2 different shows that many women are now turning to stripping and/or prostitution because of the economy. As if this was a joke???? This is highly misogynistic and shows exactly how hateful, narcissistic, and materialistic our society has become as a PORNIFIED CULTURE WHERE EVEYTHING AND EVERYOE IS LITERALLY FOR SALE (see researcher Pamela Paul's book Pornified America and the Zeitgeist Movie). Women and children are FOR SALE in this land from sea to shining sea. And so are men....

HUMAN TRAFFICKING IS A CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY.

I am also confident that Obama's victory is victory for all marginalized "other" including other races, and genders…. He is the first president of the USA who you will not catch with a hooker or a Monica Lewinsky because he loves women truly and his wife and family. All the way back to JFK we have historic precedence for our highest male leaders using women as whores and objects to satisfy their basest needs. Its time we all called for change, because this isn'’ only harmful to women and children -–its harmful to men too. Desensitized to life, trained as good soldiers our men have lost their way. See Jean Shinoda Bolen’s URGENT MESSAGE FROM MOTHER, this is why our planet is sick too…

The degradation of the feminine principle is the reason the earth is in the condition that it is in." Tunda Asega, Male African Spiritualist….

Gender Inequality is highly related to pornography production and prostitution, Its time we all wake up, this is a toxic way that must end or it will end us....

ITS TIME FOR CHANGE! ZEITGEIST! WE ARE NOT FOR SALE! DO NOT USE CRAIGLIST....UNTIL THEY MAKE THE CHANGE.

Not the internet

I love the way Dr Phil continually badmouths the internet. Advertising for prostitution is NOT limited to the internet. For example, we have 2 free newpapers in Philadelphia that  cover Arts and Entertainment, politics, world news...the whole 9 yards...the back pages are filled with sex ads...There is nothing new here Phil...have you ever heard the expression that prostitution is the oldest profession?

Of course, Phil brings these people out and immediately turns them into "victims" that need all kinds of help to stop breaking the law. No, these folks need a big reality check instead of coming on and whining about bills coming up. Guess what...they do for me too.

And, why pick on Craig's list? No other organization was mentioned....why? And, I don't feel all that comfortable with this group that is going around censoring things, and who sounds so anxious to round up the prostitutes and throw them in jail! What a waste of taxpayers money. It's about time it was decriminalized. And why are they only interested in arresting the prostitutes...they're just trying to earn a living...what about their clients...I guess it would be embarrassing if they arrested some of their own colleagues purchasing the services of the prostitutes.

PHIL, THIS PROBLEM EXISTED BEFORE COMPUTERS, BEFORE CRAIG'S LIST, SO WHY NOT GET REAL ABOUT IT.

The Free Spech Myth

Quote From: davisa6477

I am appalled by the blatant disregard for the 1st amendment that your show just put on the air. The very right that you use everyday to express your opinion, you step on when you demonize craigslist for the behavior of other people. Craigslist is a message board, as such can be used by anyone at anytime for any matter of expressing their freedom of speech. Just because some idiots use a message board for illegal activity doesn't make the website a bad place. That's like saying it was the gun, not the person who killed the victim. The founder of craigslist has made it abundantly clear, that the company is only one person, himself. The active policing of the website, as mandated by it's user terms and agreements, is done by the users of the site themselves. Basically, craigslist is the world. The world is a dark and scary place for some people, and reasonable steps should be taken by parents, law enforcement, government, whomever to protect their people from it. But if it wasn't craigslist,  it would just be a different site, with all the same people. The fact that Tom Dart is suing craigslist for the extra manpower that he's had to use to curb the extra crime is ludicrous. His department gets more money for the more crime he takes off the street.

It is a misconception and re-direction argument as well as a myth that sex or flesh trade advertisement falls under the domain of protected speech or is in anyway a constitutional freedom or that this has anything at all to do with free speech. Prostitution/Escorting, whatever you call, is illegal in most of the USA. Around the globe whenever and wherever prostituion has been legalized, violence, mafia, drugs, disease, and other major soical problems have ensued making most industrialized nation act in creating laws and policies the prevent this soical problem. The BBC recently reported that the production of and possession of snuff porn is now illegal in the UK....THe USA is falling far behind in reacting to the Internet and regulaltion. Corruption is now the law of our land...and we are failing because of it, its EYES WIDE SHIUT.

Lets be clear, the FIRST AMENDMENT DOES NOT PROTECT OBSCENITY, but because of our extremely materialistic and narcissistic social liberalisms we have allowed the First Amendment to become abused by the Pornographers and Sex Industry who now rule the most lucrative, lawless business on the planet with almost no checks/balances or laws. This business is not suffering in this economy at all...and it is lawless, and nearly boundariless and its innocent victims are giving their blood daily waiting for us to learn these lessons....

The Internet is an even more lawless terrritory. The Supreme Court is the only court in the land that can rule on obsceinty and because of huge industry influeces from those HUSTLING THE LEFT (www.hustlingtheleft.com like Larry Flynt our Supreme Court has repeatedly been bought and sold, and has failed utterly to protect our freedoms from abuse in favor of far too over-reaching liberalism which is now part of the downfall of our times and our land globally....open your eyes.

Seriously People?

I am stunned not only at the posts I've read here but the show in general - when in gods name are we all going to get it? Let me start by Quoting Dr. Phil "You DO NOT SELL YOUR BODY......" repeated references to "use to be a good girl" SERIOUSLY?

Where are the boys who tell your daughters "its ok you can let me - really - if you loved me, the uncles and cousins and dads , dads buddys , brothers friends - or MOMs buddys all talking about what you look like,  giving extra long hugs with that "joking" snear as they try to stare down your top - Or are you even "present" with your kids? Did you notice?

Where are the fathers who do their very best to teach Jr. to Respect his mother - sister - aunts but standing in the front yard with dad on a Saturday morning Jr. watches dad drool at the neighbors 15yr old and make some completely DISRESPECTFUL comment about her t*ts - lead by example right? The dads, uncles cousins taking the 15-16yr olds to Strip joints - WHERE THE HELL ARE THEY - WHEN IS THEIR SHOW GOING TO HAPPEN.......Where on where are the folks PURCHASING these services - why are they not up on the stage being vilified - after all THEY are the DEMAND!!

Stop dragging these girls out its the same show - Bad girl bad bad girl - well how about the pimp - how about the customer - how about the boy down the street who molested her on the way from school - get to the root of issue the symptoms will take care of themselves......raise DECENT boys - truly decent not just in public but true respectful men who don't think with their.......you get the idea......

Disability?

Quote From: jamibean

I feel bad for Dr. Phil, he just doesn't get it.  He thinks being a prostitute is so easy and is something a lazy person does because they don't want to work.

I worked all my life at a great job.  Then I became disabled and I had to file Social Security (which they initially denied).  I had no money, doctor bills I wasn't paying and I didn't have a car or a mom with a basement I could live in.   I applied for welfare and wasn't given enough to pay my rent.  I wasn't getting any Social Security and was being threatened with eviction from my landlady in the middle of winter in Pittsburgh.  I could have lived on the streets and get beaten, raped and probably die

or I could become a prostitute until the Social Security came through.  That's what I did.  It wasn't easy and it wasn't what I wanted to do, but I was unable to sling burgers and lying on my back for a couple of hundred was something I could do... and did do.  Fortunately, my Social Security came through and I was able to stop.

Dr. Phil, get real, in this economy, there are times that you have to do to live.  And I did what I had to do.

Dr. Phil, you should check yourself before you go around judging people.  I hate your condecending attitute toward these women.

Every one judges. We judge situations as safe or unsafe.  We judge the type of person that we want for friends, etc.  It is you who lacks judgment.  While you were on "disability" you made money by sleeping with other people's husbands, putting yourself at risk of bodily harm and disease.   Then putting the public at risk of those same diseases including unsuspecting spouses.  Now you want to justify that by quoting the bible in the title of your post.  Jesus did not speak those words to condone prostitution.

What next?

I don't quite understand how craigslist has gotten away with their "adult services" column as long as they have. Last time I heard, prostitution in the United States is illegal, except in Las Vegas (where children disgustingly hand out porn). The woman who used college as an excuse for prostituting herself has to be one of the most ridiculous excuses for anything I've ever heard. I'm taking out a lot of student loans from my school, and I plan to spend a great portion of my life paying those off, and strangely enough I have had people recommend, usually in jest, selling myself on craigslist. I'm not sure what would possess a person to go from joking about it  to even consider really doing such a thing. It's disgusting, and what's more disgusting is that craigslist hasn't done anything to eliminate underage prostitution, or even legal aged prostitution! Because there again, I thought prostitution was still illegal! This show made me physically ill. So many girls, or women, losing their innocence to such an epidemic.
