Parents, you may not know it, but there is a threat looming in your home. It’s a frightening and dangerous trend that affects the good girls -- cheerleaders, honor students and college graduates -- and law enforcement agencies across the country are up in arms. No longer needing to walk the streets to offer sex for money, young women are turning to the reputable Web site craigslist.com in order to sell their bodies. Next to the area on the site where you can buy a jungle gym for your child, you can access erotic ads, where young women post sexy photos and advertise sex for money. When Ashley was in college pursuing a bachelor’s degree, she never predicted that she would one day meet strangers for sex in order to pay off her student loans. She says she wants to quit the dangerous profession before something horrible happens, but thinks she’s addicted to the “easy money.” Crystal says she was also addicted to the money until she was nearly killed. Hear her horrific story and how her life is now that she has escaped the industry. Could Crystal’s tale be the wake-up call Ashley needs? Then, meet a mother who fears her daughter may be using craigslist to exchange sex for money. What can she do to protect her daughter? Sheriff of Cook County, Illinois Tom Dart and Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal weigh in. Lawmakers have formed a coalition to rid craigslist of its erotic service section, but find out why they’ve been fighting an uphill battle. Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Wow, the post has already started!

I have got to get into this conversation. I went onto Craigslist to sell a few items and to hire someone to help me pack while in the middle of moving. On a hoot, I went into the 'Personals" section out of curiosity. I had no idea that Craigslist would even have this section. I must say that I was rather shocked by what I found.

Personally the 'sex for sale' is tame compared to many of the other things (and pictures) that I saw there. I saw a few pictures that made me want to hurl! Lose my lunch so to speak. If this was kept to a simple 'Man seeking woman', 'woman seeking man', 'man seeking man', etc. and kept it clean such as what would be allowed in your local paper I wouldn't think twice about it. But what I read and some of the pictures that I saw were way too much, they went too far. I would say that I can't mention what I saw on this forum but what difference should it make? The same people and underage teens can quite easily stumble across what is on Craigslist, it's there for the world to see. All you have to do to 'prove' that you are over 18 and allowed to look at the site is to hit the button that says "Yes, I'm over 18". Wow, what a great way to make sure that kids don't see any of the sick stuff that is on there.

Since I prefer to have some class and will NOT disclose exactly what I saw, plus the mod's would never allow it through, I will at least share some of the things that I have come across. The biggest thing to open my eyes was to learn how many married men list on there for intimate relations with another man while they are out of town on business. Or when their wives are out of town. It seems epidemic! Many photos are shown on this site, I'm quite sure it could rival any porn site on the web. The pictures are as graphic as anyone could get, beyond disgusting.

I was under the misguided notion that Craigslist was reputable, I was wrong! They say they have the right to moderate anything that a person may post on the regular ads, but I guess it doesn't apply to the personals. God forbid if you dare to post the same item in two separate for sale sections. What a bad person you would be to do that! It's insane!

Then of course there are the scammers. How anyone could fall for such blatant schemes is beyond me. I received so many replies from scammers that I stopped posting there and I also had a few virus's, Trojans, worms, etc. try to creep into my computer. Thank goodness for a good security system. If Craigslist says there is nothing they can do about all of the disgusting ads placed on their site than they are liars. They can obviously remove any post that is nothing less than porn. I haven't seen the show yet, I only learned that it would be on by my email of this weeks topics a little earlier. I will definitely watch this show! But for now, I want nothing to do with Craigslist. It's more work than it's worth and they are pandering to some of the lowest forms of people out there. If you don't believe me take a look for yourself. And BTW, I also saw ads for 'personal massages at your home or at a hotel of your choice', I could read between the obvious lines on that one.

By no means am I a prude but I do believe that there is a place for everything and that some things are taken too far. Craigslist definitely allows things to be taken way too far!

Tend bar!

Quote From: maryishopeful

I'm in my late thirties. I have made allot of bad choices in my life and certainly haven't lived up to my potential.

I dropped out of college years ago on a scholarship to start stripping. That would be any parents nightmare.

I don't have a pimp or drug problem but I can't get out of prostitution. I'm an actress/writer and have bar tending skills but I can't stop posting on CL . It's not something just anyone can understand. Prostitution is very addictive.

I once heard it's almost harder than trying to get out of the Mafia and I get that. I have amazing people in my life, friends etc but this is a dirty little secret. I have set dates to get out but continue to post ads on CL.

I have searched for support groups out of this line of work in Los Angeles but it seems its all for impatient and girls off the street. I really want to just make the transition over to a job like bar tending while pursuing my dream.I'm also taking classes at SMC to finish my Bachelor of fine arts degree.I'm trying so hard to get back to a full life of living authentically and living to my full potential as a human being but I just need to have some support with people who can support me. I can't do this on my own.

I saw  the show and I was going to skip watching it,but by the need of the show my  choice in doing this disturbed me. I have been once again looking for support out here. I'm  going to give 110% to getting the help I need. This show scared me a little and thats good.

People this was good because the reality is no little girl EVER says I want to be a stripper or hooker when I grow up. It's something women do when they get off path in life.I really applaud Dr. Phil for doing what he can to help.

I can't understand why a woman would rather exchange sex for money with strangers than tend bar for a living. Bar tenders can make a pretty good living. I love money just as much as the next person but I would rather work at a fast food joint (or 3 if that's what it took to survive) than to prostitute myself out. I have never understood why a woman would actually make this a choice, and it is a choice. My body belongs to me (and my husband of course) and it's not something that I could give away lightly, no matter how much money was offered. And BTW, once I was offered $5,000. in Vegas by a very wealthy man to spend an hour in his hotel room with him. I was very broke at the time, behind on my car payments, and out of work. I was also only 20 years old. I turned him down flat! I felt I was better than that.

Craig's List

I go on Craig's list everyday to look for jobs. I decided to look at some other sections of Craig's list. I looked under the discussion forums - jokes, thinking I could read some jokes. Dr. Phil or his staff should see what that shows. I clicked on the first one and I couldn't beleive my eyes. There were picutres of almost nude girls in not such nice poses.  Anyone can just click on that section.  A young child could just as easily do the same thing I did. I wonder what the people from Craig's list would say about that.  This definitely should not be under jokes.  I am definitely disappointed about Craig's list. I would not consider that section as jokes.

dark side of the Internet

I am mainly writing about  Ashley, I think that was her name.  (the college girl paying her student loans through prostitution).  People always want to take the easy way out. Granted, being a prostitute is not an easy way out, but she probably likes the fact that she doesn't have to physically work hard. I put my daughter through college (we're from Illinois and she went to school in Florida). I had to take out a loan for $50,000 to pay for her college, but all in all it probably cost $100,000.  Because I didn't  have enough money to live on day to day or for unexpected expenses, I had to charge a lot of things.  At one time, my credit card bill was up to $13,000.  Well, i had to work very hard to pay everything off, which I did and now do not owe a penny to anyone. I worked 40 hours a week. I worked an evening job for 3 nights a week and every other weekend at an answering service (extremely stressful). I also did medical transcription at home besides the above 2 jobs I just mentioned. The whole situation was extremely stressful to me.  I didn't want my daughter coming out of college with huge student loans. All in all, it took me 7 years to pay off her college loan. I am not complaining about anything. i just wanted to show that things can be done a certain way. Sometimes,  we have no choice but to do what we have to do.   Also, I do have a husband who is my daughter's biological father. He did not contribute one cent toward her college education (in case anyone was wondering if  I have a husband.

Go to the discussion forum and click on jokes. There is no statement about being over 18. This morning i went to the section.  Look through the different entries and you wil be just as shocked (maybe even more than previous). There were pictures of girls practically nude in not so nice poses.  Just think if a young person wanted to go to that section and read some jokes, they would be very shocked to see that. I know i was just totally blown out of the water when I clicked on what i thought were jokes.

Hey Jewel   Thanks for your input, unfortunately like I wrote there's just somethings about prostitution that people don't or will never understand, and it's hard for someone to really understand unless they've experienced it.Things also happen within a course of time like numbing yourself and seeing it as nothing more that an act.So there's many reasons and factors that go into it. I don't expect people to fully understand that's why I don't take judgments personally. There's a million and one reasons why people may get off their path in life and stop living life to their full potential, nothing is that black and white to put all situations into one category.Despite everything I'm a glass half full girl and the older I get the less I judge anyone unless I've walked a mile in their shoes, unless they're stilettos on the avenue LOL Just kidding. It's really not my job to judge another human being or the choices they made for whatever reason. The important thing for me is to encourage someone to move to a better life with no judgments. People close up when judged and sparked to inspiration with encouragement and motivation. That's the ticket.

I  do wish the women who have caught their husbands with prostitutes would stop for a second and trash their husbands also, nobody held a gun to their husbands heads to them pick up the phone and dial a girl, but with all that being said it's a path I would never recommend, and would do whatever I could to motivate some young lady to stick to the right path.

The important thing is a person having realizations and making progress and with that comes the much needed positive support for the ladies. That's like a plant needing water.   Good for you for never being tempted for doing that. I not only think your t good for it but all women are to good for it. It all depends what the wake up call is for people, and yes I'm pursuing a bevy of Bar tending interviews.....wish me luck and peace to you. This is all.   Take care

Where did that previous poster say that she would RATHER exchange sex for money than get a bartending job? I think all of you are mistaking circumstance for personal choices. The previous poster, much like this show's guests, are simply saying that they are working in prostitution because they can't seem to get a job outside of it. Yes, they have made the choice to sell their body, but none of them have said its a choice they enjoy, INCLUDING THE TWO GUESTS ON THE SHOW. Nowhere in the broadcast did either one of them say they didn't want to work. In fact, they said the exact opposite.

Well, my curiosity has been aroused again. I will go take a look at that. You should do the same and take a look at the 'Personals' and see just how graphic it is. It will blow your mind, be sure to click on the pictures if you can stomach it. I'm talking about pic's that are not just of nude bodies, or body parts, but things that I can't mention on this forum. There were some that actually made me sick to my stomach and I couldn't understand how anyone could allow themselves to have this done to them. The Internet is out of control and there seriously needs to be some way that some control can be used on content.

If you want to make meth just type 'make meth' into the search engine and you'll get a detailed account on exactly how to make it, where and how to steal the stuff from the farmers, everything! But at least that's not on Craigslist. It probably will be by next month though since they don't seem to care about what is posted. Oh, except if you dare to post a piece of furniture in two separate categories, bad, bad person. Simply unbelievable!

Bartending skills?

Gee, before you start to suggest that I'm a liar try reading the post that I originally replied to. In her post she stated that she has bartending skills but she is addicted to the easy money. Personally I don't feel that trading your body for sex with strange men to sound quite so easy.

Bartenders can make a very good living, believe me I know. I know because I've known a few over the years. Many people have to work hard for the money they earn, so why can't she?

But as to mistaking circumstances for for personal choices, as I said, read the post that I replied to. She stated that she has skills but CHOSE to have this other 'career' due to the easy money.

I do wish you the very best of luck with your interviews and in getting out of your current 'career'. You do seem to have a positive attitude that you can do it, so I think that you can. Thank you for stating that "all women are too good for it". I believe that wholeheartedly!

This is in fact a sensitive subject for me also, though for different reasons. I have a niece who is a meth addict. We know for a fact that she has turned to selling her body for drugs. That just kills me. I have worried sick over her for so many years. I can remember so well when she was a baby, a little girl, etc. and to see what this life has done to her breaks my heart. So I can say that I have walked in similar shoes although not the same pair. If the meth doesn't kill this beautiful young woman than a man will. She's walking a very dangerous tightrope and is bound to fall off at some point.

It's not that I'm being judgmental, it's that I feel that all of us women are 'too good for this'. Our bodies are precious, they belong to us alone. I wish you the best and will keep you in my thought's & prayers and also keep my fingers crossed. You do have a good skill to fall back on, there will always be a need for a good bartender. Wishing the best of luck to you!
