09/12-13 Hurricane Katrina: Rescuing the Rescuers and Rebuilding

[quoteat least I can stand up and speak up when I see something that is B.S.[unquote

me too and I see a lot of it in your post...also resembles jealousy.

I am so sick and tired of hearing idiots like you come down on the people from New Orleans. I don't care if every resident in that city was given a handout, they lost EVERYTHING. It wasn't just a house they lost...it was a home, memories, family, etc.

All of my family was born and raised in New Orleans <some are still there> and they worked damn hard to get where they are now...which is "well off". It is so ignorant to base comments on the lazy people there....and I'm sure there are some lazy ones where you are too. Probably yourself. There are many people in New Orleans who had well respected jobs and to come across as though these people deserved it is heartless.

Do I think it was ridiculous for people to stay there knowing the consequences? Of course.

But I'm also not in their shoes. Some of these people that did not want to leave were elderly or in wheelchairs and had no assistance for a long while. I thank the Lord that my grandfather passed away last year and did not have to go through all this.

And all this B.S you see is purely prejudice. Unless you have talked to most residents in New Orleans, shut your mouth. I'm proud to be from there and I'm not gonna let some moron tell me my city deserves all of this.

Proud of Dr. Phil

I just knew that I could count on Dr. Phil to focus on important issues for his shows re: Katrina.   It was such a pleasure to hear his words of wisdom and encouragement for the rescuers and evacuees.  There are plenty of forums for political discussions and I was so relieved that he avoided that.

Thank you, Dr. Phil, for giving me 2 hours to celebrate the amazing resilence of the human spirit and for helping these people in their time of need.

Its very hard for me to listen to hogwash like this and not get upset. How naive and ignorant and misguided so many people are. THERE IS NOT SUCH A THING AS "GOD"! "God" does not exist. You people sit here and talk about the power of prayer and talk about praying to your almighty God for strength and courage...the same God that was so gracious that he thought it was imperative to send or allow Hurricane Katrina to hit New Orleans and leave over a million homeless indefinitely and thousands dead. GET REAL! I'm going to pray to God for allowing me to survive Katrina even though he allowed it to happen. Does that really make sense??? When will you all wake up and realize there is no "GOD". God is just a fabrication passed out through the centuries to maintain some sense of order. People need to feel they are living life for a purpose...not just some senseless, wretched existence that culminates in grim, everlasting death. No "Merciful God" of any type could sit back and watch let alone allow something like Hurricane Katrina to happen. As much as you all go to church and try to justify and rationalize this horrible disaster, you all dont want to conform to the fact that "God" isnt an entity. I just dont see how something so obvious is yet so vague to most people. "God"...umph! I have woken up and smelled the scent of reality, when will the rest of you? That doesnt mean that I worship the devil (who doesnt exist either) or am a bad person, I'm just enlightened.

It's always nice to hear from people who consider themselves so enlightened.    Just one question:  When will you become enlightened enough to exercise tolerance and respect for others?

Giving to Police Officers in Hurricane Area

Quote From: cecyshaw

I'd like some information on where/how to give DIRECTLY to the Police Department of this city and surrounding cities.  My husband is a police office in Texas, so after yesterday's show I really felt like I needed to give back.  Any information would be appreciated.  God Bless.
You know what - I'll bet your husband's office/police department has a listing of all the other police departments in the country, with addresses, phone numbers, etc.  They can problaby give you the number and you can call and ask how you can help them.  I'm sure they will greatly appreciate it!

09/12-13 Hurricane Katrina: Rescuing the Rescuers and Rebuilding

Quote From: arlenejp

My husband and I live in New Jersey. There are no open shelters here for people to go to from Hurricane Katrina. We and a few of our family and friends would like to open our homes for some people. We are looking for a couple with one child willing to get out and work. I own a retail store and would be able to help them by giving them a part time job for the holiday season.

So...basically we need someone with retail experience...and a willingness to work and share a household.

If you know of someone let me know.

Arlene & Tom

I hthnk you should get on the Red Cross website and other websites that ask for Hurrican help.  People don't really look for help on the Dr. Phil site.   :)

Living in Louisiana

I just wanted to imput on what it is like here in Louisiana. I am blessed that I just have damage to my home and my husband and I have been laid off, but we have our family and we have our home. I didn't get to see any of the new shows because the television stations who carry Dr. Phil are off the air. Since Tuesday after the storm I have been volunteering in shelters with my kids. All of us living in Southeast Louisiana are going through this. I read how some of you respond on how depressed this makes you, but still you watch. Well for us, we have to fight that depression as we look how our lives have changed and we have watched it on television too. It was the only thing we could watch for the first two weeks, if we could get television to work, or had power. I have all that now, but still the phones don't work right, cell phones are almost impossible, no one can call me and I am lucky to call out. That is the way for all of us here and in Mississippi. As for those living in shelters, think for a minute how it would be to try to go to sleep yourself on a gym floor with 3000 to 8000 other people. At the Lamar Dixon Center we had to get Dow Chemical to donate ear plugs so people could sleep. As far as the person that said there is no God, let me tell you how I have seen God work in the people invovled in this disaster. The traffic here is terrible we have never had traffic like this, yet people are kind and let you out, they are patient. When you go get in line for assistance, the people are kind and considerate, including the people working there. Our first responders have been living in conditions that no one should, but yet they stayed when they could leave and kept working, rescueing. Not everyone, but most. The news just tells you about the minority that make it look bad. I have seen people bring evacuees to dinner at resturants, they have given so much clothes that we just cannot handle any more, except for those precious underwear. Now we are working towards moving our fellow survivors out of those gyms and into a more long term housing as we rebuild. All of us experience stores who are having difficulty meeting our needs for food, dairy, and drinks. Walmarts where you can not find personal items and underwear. People going back into their communities, still with no power, no gas, few grocery storer and those are low on food. So as you guys discussed this with all your opinions, imagine for a moment how you would handle this. How being poor, or middle class how hard this would hit you. How you would feel asking for help where you never had to. How to not have very much and then loose it all, to leave with only the clothes on your back. To be a law enforcement officer in a city, where one minute you are controlling contraflow to get your people out, and the next you have no communication, you are overwelmed with the number of people you must try to protect and then the water begins to rise. Or for St. Bernard parish to loose all dry land during the storm, no communication, not enough boats and no help for days, nobody comes for four days, no water to drink while surrounded by 11 feet of water. Having hundreds if not thousands trapped in their attics and knowing that two days with no water becomes a death sentence. Then look around and realize how good you really do have it. That being able to help, or pray, or send a dollar, or give some things you don't need any more, but could help a family because it is still good is a way to help. That being depressed right now could be overcome by helping others that don't have what you have. And thank Dr. Phil for the advise you have given on the Larry King show, which is the only place I have been able to see or hear you.

Let's just suspend reality here and say there is no God as you put it.  For those of us who truly believe in God we live our lives accordingly, what if we are wrong and there is no God...we've lost nothing by living the way we do.   If the way you feel is true and you don't believe in God as you say...What if you are wrong?  You are entitled to your beliefs just a little food for thought.

Out of disaster comes great things people come together and help each other.  It will be along time to rebuild I know...But it will be better than ever.  Faith is all we have.

What about the white family?

This hurricane was an equal opportunity life destroyer.  I can't help but ask why the white family was not given any financial assistance.  Was it offered and not accepted?  Had there been five white families helped and no help offered to the black family, all heck would have broken loose.  I'm of mixed race so don't go there with me.

I have been walking around for days telling people how MAD I am at Dr. Phil -(usually I brag about what an awesome guy he is)  I love your show Dr Phil and i ave seen you do some great work but boy was I mad.  Thirteen people in one house and you give advice like "stick to the rules" and stay with your usual routine!"  How on Earth do you expect a child to go to bed at his normal time when "bed" is on a mattress in the middle of the living room floor!?

This family could have used $10,000 from Di-Tech and Dr. Phil I am sure.  If they didn't want to take it -- you tell them it is OK and that it isn't a hand-out or meant to take their manhood away but a helping hand from people who care.

I would like to know the lifestyle and work habits of the families that were given homes and money!  Are they responsible people that are going to put the money to good use or are they going to spend that money and wait for the next handout?!

I agree everyone deserves help -- but GET REAL!!

Befrore I rant on and on I will stop -- but please Dr Phil -- help THAT family -- I am sure they will be greatful for anything!!!
