Quote From: sherrilynnThe second guest who stated that we need to" stop seeing color and just see people" is right. I totaly agree with this young man. his friend perpetuates the racist problem when he makes statements like "he acts white" and "he can't keep a beat". If we are going to stop racism forever, we need to respect all people, their likes and dislikes shouldn't be grouped into color, and this gentleman is to be commended for speaking the truth, even when he is persecuted.
There are t.v. stations like BET, and also the negro college fund, but you don't see anybody calling that racist. Why is that okay? Im a bit confused on this. I realize that in the past, people of color were treated terribly, but should I be punished for what my ansestors did? No, we need to start rewarding people on merit, start teaching people in the poverty stricken parts of our country so that they can feel like they are capable and strong. and seeing each other as Americans--no more color differences!!!!!!!!! This is not what Rev. Martin Luther King dreamed! Quit classifying people!
As for welfare, this is not a color issue either, it is a divorced and single mother issue! Our government rewards mothers of any race for not keeping their husbands and boyfriends around. I as a married woman who has many medical bills can not get any help for my youngest child, because I am still married to his father, but my older child can get all kinds of help and they don't even care who his daddy is! This punishes fathers who are doing their part and trying to pay the rising cost of medical insurance for sick children and wives. Our country is mixed up!

Television networks and movies, magazines and books are COMMERCIAL enterprises. This means they are available for purchase to select audiances. There are "Christian" TV and radio stations, "country" ones, sports-only ones, yes, black ones, and there's even a gay TV network, probably some radio station as well. The same thing applies to all manner of magazines. It's not racist to offer a specific black station or magazine-they are catering to a specific customer, just like Pax TV, Good Housekeeping or Playboy. I'm really puzzled that anyone cannot understand this.
Just as I have no desire to listen to a single minute of country music, but there are others who have that station programmed as a "favorite", I'm sure there are black TV viewers who would like to watch a talk show that caters to say, black women's beauty issues (there IS such a show, and the needs ARE different). It's MARKETING, not racism. It's not rocket science-it's what cable afford all of us-customized programming. And as I said, you'll see that same thing in magazines. Just go to any large magazine counter.
As for the United Negro College Fund, it got it's start because as a rule, blacks were either not admitted to traditionally white colleges, or the cost was too high for a people who could as a whole, barely get jobs that paid a living wage. So the fund was formed to help ease the burden. However, you and others who think that it's a racist thing-do a search on scholarships sometime. There are specialized awards and scholarships for all sorts of specialized interests. There ARE Italian-only, Polish-only, even left-handed only college awards. Some are that way because the donor put that stipulation in the will. Others grew from a need to increase a certain population in that educational field. There are others for certain religions, military kids, children of those in certain professions, children of employees of certain companies...the list goes on and on.
This isn't racism but simply one avenue to help people afford the high expense of college.
