Dr. Phil's first guest, Charlie, admits that he's a racist and it's tearing apart his family. He has stopped speaking with his daughter, Virginia, because she's pregnant with a biracial child. With the baby due any minute, will Charlie miss out on the joy that comes with a grandchild?  Then, Rujon says he's prejudiced against his own race because he "acts white." Should he be concerned about what other people think? Plus, Marla's daughter, Daphne, has been missing for six years, and her photo was never shown on the news. Marla is angry and says missing African-Americans are ignored by the media. Dr. Phil attempts to even the coverage by putting photos of missing women of color front and center. 09/22 Are You a Racist?

Quote From: heyaamya

I completely relate to you BCurry.  I have heard that I talk "white" as well, and I have to constantly reply with, "No, I speak properly!!"  And that's all that's to it.  I think it has now become a problem where people now feel there is a certain way that a person is supposed to be based off of their color, which is so far from the truth.  I really hate that it has gotten this ridiculous.  I have a two year old daughter and now they comments are that she talks white.  It's almost as if black people often feel they are beneath white people; when they are not.  Everyone is equal.  And if  you feel less than another person, that's something you need to work on within yourself, or ask to go to the Dr. Phil show and he'll straighten you out.  Comon' people, can't we all just get along.
I so glad to finally hear someone say "no, I don't sound white. I speak properly"

I hope Daphne's mom can find peace

I was so sad by the story about the missing young woman Daphne. Shame on the local networks for not bringing her story to to the public. Is the media racist? They probably are at times, but more they look for "sensational" stories. The Lacy Peterson and Chandra Levey( cant remember how to spell that, sorry) cases were very sensational and very unusual. I think this is why those stories were covered nationally, not because they were white. Now, the story about the young lady who disappered in Aruba or where ever that was, I have asked myself many times what was so special about this case, as apposed to the hundreds of young woman that go missing every year. I hope that Daphne's mother can find out what happened to her daughter and  I hope today's show will make local medias take notice that they need to bring stories of young ppl in their communities to the community.

I appreciate your post

I am the wife of a police officer. A white Irish Catholic police officer. You want to see racism? Ride along with him one night. You will see it against him everytime he puts his badge on.  Lets see, the blacks, oh well he just shows up at their house for no reason and harrass them, nevermind that he has received a 911 call, that he MUST respond too, even though it's his 75th call of "baby momma drama".The whites, well they want to know why the police are going after the "real criminals, although he is there because some white person is commiting the crime. The mexicans, they yell that the only reason that immigration is being called is because they (the police) don't like mexicans...no, it's because they are here ILLEGALY. I could go on and on...But you know what? We don't..He leaves me every night to protect these same people day after day after day. Let me give you a little clue though, my husband doesn't care what color you are. Neither does any other officer. They are prejudiced agains ANYBODY who can't not conform to society's rules and laws. Against anybody who uses violence against them, or their neighbors in the community they have sworn to protect. If you shoot at them and try to kill them, beleive me the color of your skin is the furthest thing from their mind. Stopping the threat is the first! Now, all you liberals go ahead and blast me for this posting..Im ready for you, I've been hearing you people for 10 yrs bash my husband and his brothers and sisters. Just like Dr. Phil did today by insinuating that all police officers just pull over blacks because they can. So, go ahead, just know, that these same people whom you curse and bash, will still be there tonight, to watch out for you, protect you, and willing to die for you regardless of the hate that they are confronted with EVERYDAY by all of you.!!!!!

I appreciate your post, and I appreciate all the police officers and their families. With this being said, it is true that most police officers are not racist, but many are. Racial profiling happens. Is racial profiling an excuse for the high number of blacks in jail? No, and I don't believe this is what Dr. Phil was saying ( I hope not ) . I think I would consider myself a "liberal" and I take offense to your stereotype of us! Just because I am a liberal doesn't mean that I think racsim is to blame for all of our social woes in this country. It is a real problem, but is just one part of the social problems. Thank you!

I agree

I agree with you, Donna on EVERYTHING you just said.  Color doesn't matter to me either, but behavior is the whole reason that prejudices continue to be around with blacks and whites, especially.  I know there are "bad" in every race, but when you see certain things over and over again committed by the same people, it is hard not to be prejudice.

Lets agree to disagree

Quote From: lonalea200

I completely agree that not every black person is racist.   Every race has their good and bad citizens.   I too stay clear of those who try to take advantage of the system.  And I do have many black friends, but I don't like to refur to them as black. They are my friends.  They are respectful and follow the law.  That is a person.               Liz

MY (NOTE:MY) Opinion:

I agree that the MAJORITY of people claiming "racism" are the blacks.  But let s all understand that as long as we have freedom, we will always have differances and we will always have that double standard.......about sexual woman being easy and sexual men being heroes, about mexicans, blacks, asians...whatever.  If you ever notice, commercials always have the perfect "mix" of races.....isnt it sad that most of us are no longer racist but are forced to be scared of unintentionally hurting someone and then being called a racist, that we have to think and rethink the things we do?  I am not a racist because I understand that everyone is there own person and that just because the majority of 'whatever' do/say/think alike, it does not mean ALL of them/we do.  Example:  I am from Texas and I say "y'all", like a lot of other texans, but I dont ride horses, wear wranglers and boots with spurs.  Like Liz says , every race has its good and bad citizens.......we need to stop walking around eggshells with everyone.  Look, MOST whites hurt Native Americans by breaking 400 of there treaties.....but that has changed, its time to live life.  MANY, not all, hurt African Americans during the Slave era, but that is changing everyday......we are a different culture now.  Can someone please tell me how many people would get burned, fired and attacked if there was a WHITE ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION (WET) like there is a BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION (BET) channel????  We are creating this standard for one another by being too scared to JUST BE.---JUDY

09/22 Are You a Racist?

Quote From: mskaren45

As a woman of color, All of us know that when a black  woman is missing, you never here about it. but about 1 minute on your local news, but if  a white woman is missing, we hear about it for 24 hours 7 days a week. local and national. i am glad that she came on the show, to let them know that we know. if a child is missing, it don't matter what race you are, the attention is the same. it's is so real. jennifer wilbanks(the runnaway bride) wasn't really missing and she made national news.

I agree that racism definetly factors in, in many cases, however, I think you may be missing something. The cases of Lacy, Chandra and even the ridiculous "runaway bride" are all very sensational stories. I think this is why they made national news. ( the "runaway bride" story was never true "news") NOW, I think it's terrible that the local news stations didn't  bring Daphne's disappearance to the community. Was racism to blame? I don't know, of course, but I would bet that it did.

09/22 Are You a Racist?

Quote From: bergie1

ok, todays show on being a racist.......I am in no way trying to degrade the importance of a missing person....I feel that every means available to get the word out should be used for EVERY missing person....however...obviously the world evolves around the almighty dollar, unfortunately for the every day "joe" that is missing, networks realize that this is not a "good rating" story and thus will not spend the time airing it.  If you remember Miss Levy was allegedly having an affair with a married Senator....and Mrs.. Peterson was pregnant....so you can see why the networks raced to the story.....I personally do not believe that "color" had anything to do with it.  I am not racist , but what would the World say if I started a new cable channel called W.E.T.    (white entertainment television)  think about it......

That was beautiful! Well put

I DO agree with you on this one.......I dont think MOST people are racist, but the Media sure is.  Lacy Peterson, Rest In Peace, got sooooo much attention yet that same week Scott was on trial, 2 of the same cases were shown on my Southern Texas news station and it got 2 minutes each.  The differance: They were Mexican.  It's not even the majority of people.....it's not like whites are calling stations saying "Oh My God, you cannot show that cus they are Mexican or poor"....Lets not blame it on a race....it's the people who have actual control of the Media.  Sure, some are mexican/asian/black...whatever, but the Media  (reporters, journnalist) have the means to get these stories out there and they dont.  Not even this whole media thing is to blame on one race alone, if we are gunna point fingers, we should point them at ourselves for not standing up and doing something.

THIS POEM SAYS IT ALL:

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.
