(Original Airdate: 09/27/05) It's a game many kids call "Space Monkey," or "the choking game," but the consequences could be deadly. Robin witnessed her 14-year-old daughter and her friends giggling, choking and passing out. But what Robin saw was no laughing matter. Find out why her daughter enjoys the game, despite its dangerous repercussions. Then, Sarah's 13-year-old son made headlines when he died playing the choking game. How can she move past the guilt? Plus, Dr. Phil addresses a trend that looks innocent on the surface, but can affect teens in the worst way.  Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Another Version of the "choking game"

I am a 26 year old, married woman and have information about a different version of the "choking game" that we did when I was 12-13 years old.  I think it's important to provide these details so parents are aware that there are other ways kids play this game and since I haven't heard them mentioned on either show about this topic.  I'm still not sure exactly what we were doing to our bodies, however I'm assuming now that we were stopping or interrupting our heartbeat.  We would stand up against a wall and then bend over at the waste and take ten, slow deep breaths.  We would hold the last breath as we stood up against the wall.  A friend would then use both hands to push on the middle of our chests until we passed out.  We would get the same effects as the kids described getting from choking one another.

It's very scary to think about it now, but I wanted to put the details out there to help anyone that it can.

mother of two , only one living

I lost my oldest daughter in a mobile home fire on  5/7/1994, then got pregnant  and had my youngest daughter on 5/8/1997 . I had the hardest time getting over the dates, well I still havent really, I guess I have just learned to live with it . But some of the things you said today made me really think about the way I handle things with Megan . Thanks .    One Very Sad Mother. Julia Byrd.

Not New

When i saw the commericial for this show I was only shocked because it was called a new teen trend. This is not new. I am 23 years old and I used to play this game when I was around 11 or 12. I do agree this is dangerous. I need this all the time when my parents were not home because they told us to stop it. Eventually I did stop only when I 'Choked' myself once and fell backwards into the wooden arm a living room chair. My brother on the other hand was a addicted to this 'high' he would choke himself at 25 times a day, he would not pass out just feel 'tingly' and walk around the house in a 'high'. It got so bad with my brother that he had stretch marks on his neck from doing it so often. Thank God he got over this habit by himself. Thank you so much for bringing this dangerous addiction.

teen trends

Hi, My son graduated in 96 from high school. In his Junior year he and some friends were playing a game in class. I have a police scanner in my home and heard an ambulance was going to the high school. I got there before they even got a chance to call me because as I said they were playing a game. The game was seeing who could hold their breath the longest. My son won and lost at the same time. He held his breath the longest but he passed out and hit his head onthe block wall and then on the floor. He busted his head wide open. When I got there ther was blood everywhere but he was alive. He never played that game again.

We didn't know

I'm 22 now and we did this all the time in middle school.  I don't remember who started it or how is got started but we did.  I didn't even know that this was a "trend" or had a name until today.  It is so scary to think what could have happened to any of us.  It is so important that kids learn about these things.  Parents, teachers, school officials, church members, everyone has got to keep up to date on things like this and educate kids.  Kids know the dangers of drugs and alcohol but there is so much out there just like this that they may be doing and have know idea what they are actually doing.

Choking game & seizures

I'm 42 yrs old and was just mortified to hear that kids are doing this choking game.  I wasn't surprised to hear that it causes seizures due to lack of oxygen.  I was born with epilepsy 42 yrs ago and doctors are almost convinced I was born with the epilepsy due to lack of oxygen while my mother was in labor with me for 16 hours.

Living with seizures for 31 years was not easy and I wouldn't wish it upon anyone.  People are still living in the ice age when it comes to wanting to become better educated on epilepsy and what to do if someone has a seizure.

I was very fortunate to have been referred to some fabulous doctors in Syracuse, NY by my Neurologist in Pennsylvania.  I underwent 15 1/2 hours of left temporal surgery on December 15, 1994 and have been completely seizure free ever since.  I really wish that Dr. Phil would do a show on epilepsy so that people could understand it better and so that these kids who are doing the choking game as well as other things they are doing can cause a lifetime of sheer agony.

This choking game, sniffing aerosol cans, etc...it's just not funny.  Wake up kids, you are completely ruining if not ending your lives and just causing so much pain and agony to those who love you.

this is horrible!!!

I am watching the show like i always do and I see kids choking themselves for fun!!! I am 21 and I am epileptic because of a head injury I got when I was younger. And as a mother I am mortified. What are these kids thinking?  I hope they realize that its not something you should do for fun. If my kids ever did this I'd get them the help they need and I'd keep a close eye on them. i feel ad for the mother who lost her son to this game. my heart goes out to her. if these kids want to play games..play a board game, vidoe game or play sports. Choking is not a game. I have had epilepsy since i was 15yrs old. and each seizure i have i still get scared because i could die. i couldnt stand leaving my family and friends and im thankful that im still here to be with them. i hope Dr. phil gets through to these kids and their families.

For kids that are reading this

When i was 15, my friends and i played the chocking game, we thought it was funny at first.  And, then one day one of our friends had a seziure of doing it and that made us stop.  ANd it should make all of these kids stop because of that little boy dieing because of a game.
