(Original Airdate: 09/27/05) It's a game many kids call "Space Monkey," or "the choking game," but the consequences could be deadly. Robin witnessed her 14-year-old daughter and her friends giggling, choking and passing out. But what Robin saw was no laughing matter. Find out why her daughter enjoys the game, despite its dangerous repercussions. Then, Sarah's 13-year-old son made headlines when he died playing the choking game. How can she move past the guilt? Plus, Dr. Phil addresses a trend that looks innocent on the surface, but can affect teens in the worst way.  Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Quote From: joycelan

It is a sad day when an adult will belittle out youths.  by the way, were you a youth once?

OK, i honestly find it very disturbing everyone on here saying how stupid and saying dum monkey. I think its very selfish and inconsiderate. It is no different then drug addictions, anorexia, or self injurers. Theres problems in life and were all here to help everyone through it. Were kids. I personaly dont like the game. But i know some of my friends do. I never call them stupid and anything to affend them that will make them want to do it more and depressed. U guys are adults and i cant believe u cpould say such a rude thing. i dont even know what to think or say anymore. Life is hard, but we all get through it. I help my friends deside not to play the game. And i think everyone else should to. it really makes me cry about what all those message boards said. i knoe i havent been through it but i have been throiugh self injurey i used to and everyone said i was selfish and everything else and this is the same thing. if u want ids to stop help them, let them know what the problem is. dont make fun of them.

12/21 Shocking Teen Trends

Quote From: txchik83

I'm 22 now and we did this all the time in middle school.  I don't remember who started it or how is got started but we did.  I didn't even know that this was a "trend" or had a name until today.  It is so scary to think what could have happened to any of us.  It is so important that kids learn about these things.  Parents, teachers, school officials, church members, everyone has got to keep up to date on things like this and educate kids.  Kids know the dangers of drugs and alcohol but there is so much out there just like this that they may be doing and have know idea what they are actually doing.

I'm a 30yr old woman and me and my friends also played this game when we were kids, never realizing the dangers of it!!  We never had a name for the game , nor did we play it exactly the same but in general it was the same game.  I'm glad parents are aware of this game (ours weren't)and I'd like to say THANK YOU DR. PHIL for enlightening us all about the dangers...We had no idea!

Space Monkey--No Joke

About three years ago, I was awakened by a telephone call that has affected my entire family in one way or another. My youngest sister's son was found hanging by his bathrobe sash from a Bowflex machine. This young man had everything going for him. He was an honors student, an Eagle scout, and a top-notch soccer player. Something that was pointed out by Dr. Phil that most of these kids aren't aware of is the death of brain cells. I have had epilepsy since age 10, and I can tell you that while a seizure kills off brain cells, it also depreciates short term memory. I have to write everything down or I forget it. Taking tests in school was the hardest thing, because no matter how much I studied, at test time it was forgotten. Lack of oxygen to the brain can cause full blown epilepsy, and it's no fun. With all the new drugs available, there is still that stigma attached to the term. DON'T PLAY THESE GAMES

liability murders

My son was murdered in a hospital because he wanted to leave. He checked himself in for a relapse of an MS lesion and when he realized that the resident who saw him didn't know anything about neurology,  he asked to leave the hospital. He wanted to try his luck at a hospital he had been to previously.

When he asked to leave they stopped him and sedated him. Sedation acts very similarly to the choking game. To make matters worse, my son already had a brain lesion...!

Well, before too much time had passed he had a seizure. The resident let it go on for 70 minutes. This is criminal. The resident and nurses wanted him to die so they could cover their mistake of not letting him go and sedating him.

Sedation starves the brain of oxygen. It makes it swell. My son was left to die of herniation. No one called me until it was too late so I couldn't save him. I know what the mother on the show is going through.

Dr Phil should really do a show on medical murder. It is happening a lot. It's the secret horror of our times.

About The Choking Game

I am 25 years old and know better now.  But when I was a teenager, my friends and I did this all the time.  I had a couple of close calls but didn't think anything of it.  It has been at least 10 years since I have done this and was just wondering if any one knows of any side effects that show up in the future?  Please let me know.  Thank you.  Any one can email me at tinkerbell9900@peoplepc.com.

I did it as a kid

After watching the show today, I was shocked and very unnerved by what I saw.  I am 44 years old and I remember when I was 11 years old in the sixth grade, we used to make ourselves pass out by bending over, hyperventilating, having someone from behind squeeze us in the mid-section until we passed out.  At the time, I figured it was harmless but as I grew up, I realized that it was more detrimental than first thought.  Today, the game is much more dangerous as the kids are actually placing things around their necks to cut off the oxygen.  Like everything else in life, it's an evolution of finder a bigger and better thrill because 33 years ago for me, what we did was a thrill then.  It sure wouldn't amount to much for the kids today.  It's very sad and I hope that the show will make parents and kids more aware of this situation.

This is nothing new

This is my first message on Dr. Phil's site so please excuse me if I am not following protocall.  I just wanted to say that I am almost 32 years old and I can remember playing this game when I was about 11 or twelve....20 years ago. I was a bit bigger than the other girls that I played with so I wasn't their favorite person to catch when passing out so I was not usually, if ever, the one being choked.  I remember a couple of friends passing out for 10, 20, even 30 minutes at a time and my friend's mom came in and we told her about the game. She was a young "fun mom" so we thought she'd think it was fun too and luckily she had enough sense to make us stop.  I'm not totally sure that my friend listened to her mom but I know that once the passing out time reached 30 plus minutes we got worried and stoped the game....I know I did at least.  I can't totally speak for the other girls since I was not around them all the time.  Hearing Dr. Phil makes me wonder if my friend's epilepsy and Lupus that she developed later in life could be related.  If that's crazy talk then, I'm sorry.  I just started watching the episode on this topic, paused the tv and came online to write since I had done the choking game so long ago but it seemed like there can be serious consiquences from choking that are unknown.  I hope the show has opened people's eyes about the appearent epidempic and will save some lives.

Nitrious Oxide

Quote From: witchymama

Actually, many things kill brain cells - sunlight, orange juice and many other common things. Also, cells die on their own. The big problem with this kind of cell death is that is is caused by anoxia - oxygen deprivation. The reason there is a "high" to choking, huffing, dusting, etc. is anoxia. It causes the brain to try to compensate for the lack of oxygen and side effects of this are the spots, rush and other effects that the users seek.

So, it's not so much that brain cells are dying, it's HOW they are being killed during these activities. They literally  explode, hence the possibility of clots and strokes.

Also, did you know kids can use a whipped cream dispenser and those capsules of nitrous oxide that are used as a propellant for them? They suck on the dispenser nozzle and get the same effect as these other methods. Yes, it's the same gas as used in your dentist's office but it's not mixed with oxygen as it is there. Just an FYI....

My sister's ex-husband got very addicted to Nitrous and she says (after researching it) that it actually changes your personality.  It's totally self inflicted brain damage.  Have you ever seen people addicted to huffing? Like on an episode of cops? They are totally crazy homeless people and never recover. The people on that episode anyway.  My sister's ex was super smart, a computer programmer, never *ever* at a loss for words and he started speaking less clearly, losing his train of thought, fumbling for the right thing to say. She says he's into things he would have made fun of before the addition. Like his sense of humor, hobbies, etc.  He's dating a sex worker now, someone we would have found gross before.  He's a totally different person.  He yelled at my sister, called her weak and stupid and worthless...stuff he would *never* do before he had the drug problem.  I'm rambling but I wanted to agree that Nitrous is a serious problem too.

I am 57 years old and I remember the same thing when I was a kid. I never had it done to me but my friends did this evey once in a while for a laugh. It was never an on going thing and we didn't do it for the high,it was just for laughs.

This must have been going on for decades but no one ever talked about it before.
