(Original Airdate: 09/27/05) It's a game many kids call "Space Monkey," or "the choking game," but the consequences could be deadly. Robin witnessed her 14-year-old daughter and her friends giggling, choking and passing out. But what Robin saw was no laughing matter. Find out why her daughter enjoys the game, despite its dangerous repercussions. Then, Sarah's 13-year-old son made headlines when he died playing the choking game. How can she move past the guilt? Plus, Dr. Phil addresses a trend that looks innocent on the surface, but can affect teens in the worst way.  Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Beware....Another Game Being played

I too heard about Dusting, where 9-15 year olds use Dust off to get high! I think it is really sad that kids are fining new thing's everyday that are bad for there bodies, and that can possibly kill them.

Adderall

Quote From: just16

Right before the part in the show were they talked about the kid who was addicted to the computer and cell phone they showed a video that had little snatches about other teen trends but they didn't go into a discussion about any of them. One of the things mentioned was adderal. Anyone have any idea what that was about?

also, Dr.Phil mentioned a websight that has supposedly been helpful to him and that he said there was supposed to a link to it from this websight. Anyone know what the websight was or where the link is?

Just a FYI on Adderall:  It is a prescription medication. It is an Amphetamine ( "upper") It is prescribed to children for the treatment of ADHD. This medication is taken recreationally for it's "high". This drug is dangerous when abused- it has a long list of side effects- some which can be life threatening such as high blood pressure and rapid heart rate. Young ppl should know that any medication- prescription or over the counter, can be DEADLY if not used correctly, such as under the directions of a doctor.

NOT NEW JUST PARENTS ARE MORE CONCERNED NOW

I just wanted to say that this game isnt new, as have many others who've posted...I can remember ppl doing it when i was younger and i am now 30...its not a teen epidemic either, alot of young adults do it, and they do it under the influence of drugs or alcohol..its very sad that children are dying from this game but its been a reality that alot of parents have refused to acknowledge for a very long time..  It seems that there are more and more parents actually caring about their children these days, so hopefully with this show the word will get spread out and we can protect our children a little better...  For Sarah and Samuel:  My condolences on your loss, I hope you are able to pick up the peices of your lives very soon! Thank you so much for bringing this to America's attention!!

I thought about this too. Of course, "murder" is for when you kill someone with intent. These kids have no intent, they are just very, very foolish "thrill-seekers". However, a charge of manslaughter could be brought. I think perhaps Dr. Phil's focus was on the safety and lives of youngsters. But, I don't think it would have hurt to bring up the legal aspect.

Thinking of you and your boys

Quote From: pacatte

It is my hope that when this show airs, teachers, school administrators, doctors, medical examiners and coroners will start to take this seriously: I pray that teachers and school administrators especially, will start to warn and educate about this deadly game. It would be a small matter for them to includewarning and educating about this thrill seeking

(LtoR Samuel,Me,Elizabeth,Arthur and Gabriel...We miss him.)behavior into pre existing curriculam such as 'drug awareness' 'red ribbion week', etc. I wish I had known this game killed and continues to kill children. There have been five other deaths from this game since Gabriel's in May of 2005.

Thank you Dr. Phil for seeing the urgency and importance of informing the public. Thank you so much Amy, Gaylin and Astra for sticking it out with us. Russell, oh you sweet man you! Thank you for being so kind to Samuel... I will always be grateful that it was this group of people who worked with us!

Much fondness and,

Still Loving All Four Of My Children,

Sarah

I wanted to say that before today's show, I had not heard of this game- and I am a young, "hip" mom. I called my 14yr old son in and made him watch the show, so he could be aware of this and know the dangers. He is, coincidentally named Gabriel too. I am so sorry for  your loss, and admire your mission to help get the word out, so that other wonderful young people don't have to die.

My Old Schoolmates

When I was in 6th grade (1973) we played this game...so for those who ask "what is the world coming to?", it's not a new trend.

Alyssa - of my school mates who went on to do drugs in high school, two died, I see a few others walking around pretty destitute but in a school of 500 kids, most of the people I know came through it. (THIS is not to condone the drugs because those who came through are just plain lucky!) Of my elementary school mates who played this game, I have epilepsy, two are worse off than the biggest acid head from highschool and one died while playing the game.

If your friends still want you to do this...show them this message board and tell them to kiss your butt.

How about this young lady getting charged with murder, if the person she "chokes" dies???

teen trends

I never heard of this "trend" before this show. I do remember that when my son was in the Marine Corps, they were taught how to do this to an enemy. My son told me that they had to practice on each other. He told me that they would choke someone til "they were out." This was even done in the barracks so they could do it for the DI(drill instructor) It is a dangerous game and hope that our children will find something else that is positive to do instead of something that is so dangerous.

Cel Phones

Consider the hundreds of thousands of people who made the transition from kid to grown up without a phone...isn't the "cure" obvious with the cell phone addiction? We survived, the world was just as dangerous (oh yes it was...not in the news but oh yes it was dangerous) and when someone rings up a $399 bill just talking to his friends, obviously he doesn't need it for emergencies. I don't own a cel phone so I don't know but in all this high tech stuff, is it not possible to restrict a phone from just his number to his mum's and the police or something?  How about taking the phone away for good, not just a few weeks? He's obviously not mature enough to have one. It's not child abuse to deprive them of a cel phone.
