(Original Airdate: 09/27/05) It's a game many kids call "Space Monkey," or "the choking game," but the consequences could be deadly. Robin witnessed her 14-year-old daughter and her friends giggling, choking and passing out. But what Robin saw was no laughing matter. Find out why her daughter enjoys the game, despite its dangerous repercussions. Then, Sarah's 13-year-old son made headlines when he died playing the choking game. How can she move past the guilt? Plus, Dr. Phil addresses a trend that looks innocent on the surface, but can affect teens in the worst way.  Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

09/27 Shocking Teen Trends

Quote From: dianeleh

I am a 36 year old mother of 2 beautiful children.  I must admit, I too, played this game in my early teens as well.  I can't remember who came up with the suggestion, but, we all did it to each other and experienced it as well.  Our game, which had no name, involved the breathing heavy, and then the person would squeeze each side of the neck until you passed out.  I NEVER thought it was harmful in anyway, nor would I have ever believed anyone if they had told me that there was danger.  I was never a drinker, drug user or any of the typical teen "experimentation".  People do the strangest things!  Not that this will cure the problem, however, as a single Mother struggling to put food on the table for my kids and an absentee father, I have to say that the absence of parental supervision is partly to blame.  Not the parent, but, that a single parent is forced to go out to work to make ends meet and leave their children alone or with people who don't have the same interests as a parent.  I debated even telling my kids that this game exists, however, now, I realize that I have an advantage over other parents that I am aware of it.

Single parents need to get support from somewhere...friends, family members, councelors, doctors...I am overwhelmed every minute of every day by the stress of keeping up a household and keeping the lights on, gas in the car...that I am often depressed and angry at having such pressure and my escape is sleep.  I know I need to plug back into my life...God knows what my children are doing while I am silencing the pressure by "taking another nap" while they play quietly upstairs...

My daughter is 15 and a good student, involved in sports, and an only child.  She had always been responsible and trustworthy, so I really didn't think much about leaving her home alone while I was at work, which was alot since I am a single parent.  Thanks to my niece, I was informed that my daughter was also risking her life.  Not only was she choking herself, but she was also inhaling whipped cream and hair mousse.  I never thought much about the "scratches" on her wrists.  I thought they were from our cat.  I never would have thought that my intelligent, centered child would cut herself on purpose, for the thrill of the pain.  FORTUNATELY, I found out  in time, and she got help, and is doing better.  If my niece had not told, my daughter would most likely be dead today.  I

thought, like many other parents, that my child was smart enough to never do anything so insane and risky.  I wasn't thinking like a 15 year old.

Going on for a long time

Dr. Phil,

Sadly, this choking game is not new and I'm horrified to have learned as an adult it's ramifications.  I am 34 years old and when I was 12 and 13 my friends and I played this "game" all the time.  I got so good at it, I could do it to myself while alone in my room.  We didn't think it was harmful because we weren't ingesting anything or "hurting" ourselves.  It seemed harmless.  I couldn't believe it when I learned about it again 22 years later on a news magazine show and then on your show.  I am ashamed of myself for being so dumb that I would put myself and my friends in danger.  I have two children of my own and will be horrified if they attempted this.  I will be very vocal to them in teaching about the dangers of this and other games so they don't repeat the same mistakes I and so many others have made.  Thank  you for reminiding me of this terrible trend.

Not only teens

I'm 55 years old and this has been going on since I was a little kid, back in the late fifties and early sixties my brother and his friends would do the same thing by taking ten real deep breaths and thencrossing their arms over their chest real tight while holding the last breath till they passed out, I told them then it was stupid and they was going to kill their selves. I told my mom and they said I was lying. Well it didn't kill them but they all turned to other things to get euphoric. It is a danger and when he tried to show my children how to do it I made him stop. They never found out about how to do it.

Cathy, I am so sorry--your post was not the one I intended to reply to--YOU were the EMT who was so kind and understanding.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart--if I called 911, I would pray to get a person just like you!   God Bless, Stephanie

Don't be so sure they don't find out about it.How old are your kids?Do they go to school yet?If not like we all seem to say this is not a new thing its old, but kids are STILL doing this. And of all ages too .take it from me i know .I gone on a few calls before with kids that have tried this and failed such as ending in death.I have a 15 yr old daughter ok?I never  thought  that she had even knew about this and when i asked if she had heard of it she said yes she did now my daughter started high school this year and she has knew about this game since elementary but would never take part because she was to scared of getting hurt i guess with me being a former EMT  she knew that it wasn't right also.Just be careful and weiry of this sort of thing we need to make our kids more aware when they are young the dangers of this game. take care.

suspects my teens involve..

I am deaf mother of 6 kids, am 40 years old....  all my kids are hearing.. I know its been big struggle for me that I am going through teens stage..  dealing with them (4 of them) and little ones (3 & 1)..

my oldest two kids sometimes wont admit or share or tell me whats going on or anything wrong is seriously.. I dont blame them because I am very strict.. when the pusihments come to, they lose their privledges..  and i dont let them get away.. but this time.. they are getting away for not telling me...  I have talked to school counselor to see if any suspect or foul play..  they said no..

the kids refused to go dr..   I dont want you guys think I am stalking or suspects too much..  but when the kids talk about things, it alarms you that arent safe.. they think its OK.. and think that i am worrywart... I am not..  I went through my own teen life.. Been there and there, dont want go through...

I have been watching Dr. Phil almost faithfully, whatever he talks about kids/teenagers, it helps me to understand but sometimes, I wish he find deaf parents dealing with hearing teenagers.. cuz alot of times I feeling unfair when the agurements come to.. they talk fast and walk away.. later something seriously that they just talked about which i dont know..    anyway off point..

on that day.. Dr.Phil talked about Space Monkey,  the kids came home from school... it showed about 20-25 min left...  Kids were watching..  then after its over..  I asked the kids if they knew about it..  they said.. Oh thats old news, we done it many times..  I was SHOCK.. I cried..  I told them please stop doing this..  they said they dont do them only slumber party or other parties they go to friend's..   I asked them more questions, they cut off the conversation, I begged them to talk more.. they think I will hunt down to their friends and friends' parents..  I told them well its need to talk with parents and its very risky..

after I found out... "passing out".. losing 100 brain cells..  No wonder.. since almost a year.. my oldest two kids--- their grades dropped from A to C-D...having trouble with math/reading...

my question... who can i look for someone talk to my kids about this and respecting me as parent..

-counselor didnt help at all that we tried go to.. I went there myself most of times, kids refused to go..
