(Original Air Date: 10/03/05) Imagine growing up in a cult where you are forced to have sex with strangers -- when you’re as young as 5. Dr. Phil talks to people who escaped the group known as the Children of God, and need help moving on. Meet a daughter who says she can’t forgive her father for the years of painful abuse she suffered at the hands of this cult. How can she reconnect with her dad and start trusting again? Plus, China and her husband, John, are building a new life after leaving the group, where they were forced to have sex with strangers when they were both underage. They’ve had a difficult time adjusting to the outside world, and China wonders if she should prosecute her parents for abuse. What does Dr. Phil think? Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

i in all my years can not understand how a parent could allow thear children to be abused in this fashon

and you will never convinse me they didnt know it was wrong!!!!! no way in hell can any of thease parents say they did nothing wrong to thease children!!! i knew better than that at age 7,

and i relly do not see how thease parents even live with themselves today,

that guy jim didnt seem to think he did any thing wrong to his daughter, and i have to tell you it made me very mad to watch him sit thear and smile like he did when dr phil offered to get him help,

it was as if he relly didnt care about getting help he needed none he relly had no problem in what he did to his daughter,

damn how could he sit thear like he did, this is one time i relly wished dr phil had just got up and slaped the stym winding piss out of a man on his show, if ever i saw some one that deserved it i saw it today, and i could tell you aswell i for one would never buy any type of books or anything supporting a cult in any way, and i relly dont think jim is as uninvolved with his cult as he would have every one think he is, hes not a very good actor im my eyes i saw through him as i see through glass!!!!!!

Cults

Nobody knows what it is like growing up in a cult. I grew up in a cult that is still around, and there is way to much fear for past members to say anything to shut it down. And just like the people on the show today you grow up in such seclusion that you know nothing about the outside world. You are taught to fear anyone that could help you. I found that out after getting out that there was people all these years out there that would of helped if we would have asked. Little to late for that. So people that think cults don't exist THEY DO. Former cult member born into the cult and knew nothing different.

children need help

Quote From: janhoney

Thats right I really want to know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  You are not God because HE doesn't teach this in HIS teachings.  And what is this about the wrongness is NOT IN THE ACT????????????  Boy you need to go back to school and learn that Good is Good and Bad is Bad - Right is rRght and Wrong is Wrong.  A Lie is a Lie and there are no half lies or truths; those are only from Satan.  GET REAL if you can anymore.
i watched the show today on cults.. it made me very mad that child protection service dose not step in and do something about it...expecially now that it is out in the open.. children are the innocent ones who suffer....kristi ditch your dad he is not worth it.... he knew it was all wrong...and he let them things happen to you....   no real father would let that happen .    fathers usually help and protect there children from monsters like that...  unless they are sick and perverted themselves....  i think he is still in the cult...so be careful... i don't trust him.. and if i was dr. phil on the show i would have a very hard time keeping myself from knocking his teeth out..  or worse...

i am really being sorry

Hey.. thats such a horrible story that made me so sad about how can people use the religion in their own way... so these innocent people go there to find something meaningfull for their life, and then some other bad people make their lifes miserable..
I am so sad about the children so sad about society and innocent religious feelings...
Who can tell me that where the world is going to?

overcoming childhood abuse

I was sexually abused as a child, and it has one effect or another on me my whole life.  I am now 52 years old, and a born again believer (for 14 years now) and when I watched today's show I could relate, and yet I couldn't .  I thought, God look at what they went through... so much more then I did,  and what I went through has had such an effect on me I can only imagine . . . I have had my battles with the thoughts of suicide!  I have not had a healthy sexual relationship with my husband and we have been married 17 years!  I pray for those dear, sweet young women and men.  How lucky they are to have you keeping an eye on them.  I wish that they could know that God has not forgot them.  That what they went through was NOT God!

maybe at the age of 5 years old you dont know whats right from wrong, but as you get older you start to feel things are wrong, and god gave you a brain to use to know who to fear and who not to fear! now weather you use your common scence or not is up to you,why dfo people who leave this kind of a life style keep thear scilence for so many years and not goin to the police with thear story?

i can get along with the worst kind of crimanals or the cream of scoitey just by using my common dcence ive done it  i know it can be done, no one taught me a thing about common scense,

i learned from god by following what my heart felt, your brain is a powerful tool all one has to do is use it! i do however know at age 5 to age 14 a child relly has no chance but after age 14 you do know whats right and whats not, if the cult you grew up in is still active you should have told on them after you left, by keeping your scilence you help them to abuse more children the way you were abused, people need to tell on thease groups and lead officals to thear hiding places,

 Dear Afraid,
You are correct is saying that the abused children need to stand up,tell their stories, and go to the police and file complaints. There are many reasons that the abused don't actually do thisimmediately.  Its a long process before many are ready to confronttheir abusers, unfortunately long past most of the statute oflimitations tolling periods in the United States.  We are hopingthat exposing the history of this group will facilitate thisprocess.  Part of the problem with this group is that theyevidently combined the love of God with the love expressed by thevictims' parents.  I have been giving the FBI and IRS all the information that I can aboutTFI, but it is important for the communities to make themselves aware ofwho these people are and the danger they pose to our communities.
Thanks!
Jim

You can not compare Jehovah Witnesses to "The Family"

Quote From: dhaszard

I was born into the Jehovah's Witnesses cult in 1957,i was the good little JW boy who got beat up in the school yard for not saluting the flag. This was the 'better dead than red' era of the 1960's

Jehovah's Witnesses are a classic cult. The Watch Tower Corporation is a media publishing, real estate development, and convention sponsoring company and their literature all promotes the corporation and those goals.

I have Jehovah's Witnesses family in Naples Florida who practice the Watchtower JW enforced ritual shunning that i have not seen or heard from in 15 years.

I am not the only one,the 'fraud in the name of God' Jehovah's Witnesses have defrauded MILLIONS of followers.

When the Watchtower corporate racket is held accountable for their misdeeds they scream religious 'persecution'.

Danny Haszard www.dannyhaszard.com

I am not a Jehovah Witnesses, but my sister is.  To call the Jehovah Witnesses a cult is harsh.  A cult does not want it members to talk to there family's if the family does not beleave the way the cult does.  My sister is very close to me and the rest of owe family.  She is the only Jehovah Witnesses in the family.  Before she became a Jehovah Witnesses she was on drugs real bad.  Now she only lives for God and I dont see anything wrong with that.  Now about the enforced ritual shunning.  I dont know about your family but my sisters husbands family are Jehovah Witnesses and his sister stop being a Jehovah Witnesses when she came out the closet.  His family and the other Jehovah Witnesses have not shunned her.  To compare Jehovah Witnesses with "The Family" is just wrong.

 Dear Afraid,
"That guy Jim" is putting everything on the line to expose this cult.  "That guy Jim" tried to convince the San Diego Superior Court that granting me full custody of my two daughters was the appropriate position to take- back in 1981!   Instead, the court wanted an agreement between the parents, wherein the children would not be removed from the County.  One week after the order, my daughters were abducted by their mother, and adult members of The Family where they were taken into Mexico, then Thailand and were beaten and raped by TFI.  Please be more informed.  You can do so by reviewing our site at www.fpac.us.  Dr. Phil's organization did provide counseling in order for my daughter and I to reunite.  That process has been ongoing for over a year since the inital broadcast of this program.  I enjoin you to read a bit more, become more informed, and then level criticisms or judgments against me with a clearer view.  "That guy Jim" didn't abuse his children.  "That guy Jim" wants to make sure that the group can never do it again- to his, or any other's children.
Thanks!

The Family Cult

In reading some of the postings, if you haven't been in an abusive raising, cult, etc. then there is no way you can truly understand how hard it is to talk about the abuse (even as an adult). When a child is intimitated through abuse (especially sexual abuse) it stays with them in adult hood. It is not unusual for the adult victim to be in his/her 30's to 40's before they even see the abuse as abuse. It's like being raised in a tornado (you think it's normal) even with the caos, it's not until you get out and your mind will let you to start to see the abuse as not normal, do you start to think the caos of your home life was not normal.
