(Original Air Date: 10/03/05) Imagine growing up in a cult where you are forced to have sex with strangers -- when you’re as young as 5. Dr. Phil talks to people who escaped the group known as the Children of God, and need help moving on. Meet a daughter who says she can’t forgive her father for the years of painful abuse she suffered at the hands of this cult. How can she reconnect with her dad and start trusting again? Plus, China and her husband, John, are building a new life after leaving the group, where they were forced to have sex with strangers when they were both underage. They’ve had a difficult time adjusting to the outside world, and China wonders if she should prosecute her parents for abuse. What does Dr. Phil think? Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

so what your saying is you were never a member of that cult

Quote From: jlamattery

 Dear Afraid,
"That guy Jim" is putting everything on the line to expose this cult.  "That guy Jim" tried to convince the San Diego Superior Court that granting me full custody of my two daughters was the appropriate position to take- back in 1981!   Instead, the court wanted an agreement between the parents, wherein the children would not be removed from the County.  One week after the order, my daughters were abducted by their mother, and adult members of The Family where they were taken into Mexico, then Thailand and were beaten and raped by TFI.  Please be more informed.  You can do so by reviewing our site at www.fpac.us.  Dr. Phil's organization did provide counseling in order for my daughter and I to reunite.  That process has been ongoing for over a year since the inital broadcast of this program.  I enjoin you to read a bit more, become more informed, and then level criticisms or judgments against me with a clearer view.  "That guy Jim" didn't abuse his children.  "That guy Jim" wants to make sure that the group can never do it again- to his, or any other's children.
Thanks!
Jim LaMattery
if i wrongley acused you please forgive me but still you should have gone a step ferther to insure your dhildrens safety,

well jim i read what happened on the show just to see if i heard wrong

well i didnt you in fact were in that cult and had those children while you were in that cult,

you knew right from left, but yet you did nothing, you talk about when you were in that cult it was the best years of your life! dosent sound like words trying to convince any court of how abbusive a cult is to children( infact it sounds like someone who is trying to defend not condem!)

so you say im wrong!! no infact you are the one wronf in this picture!!!

when you left that cult why did you not take those children and run?

you even talked about you and your wife then being instructed to stimulate the children for sex,

you knew what was goin to happen to them at that point, no way can you tell me you had no idea they were going to rape those children, no one in this world is that dumb that they couldnt figure that out!!!

but yet you seem to have done nothing to change noones feture but your own,

that alone in my book is showing that you cared not what happend to them!!

you only cared what happened to you,  jim thats a coward hands down, and after all those children endured you asked your daughter what were the good things that happened to her that she could remember, damn boy get your head out of your ass for a min, thear are no good memories for that child to remember about all of that period of her life,

you relly dont care do you, how could you even think anything good about a cult such as that one,

instead you should be trasking them down for the police and helping your daughters put all of that in thear past,

CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE - DEFINED

Child sexual abuse (1 in 3 girls and 1 in 7 boys) occurs among all groups of the population. It happens to children in both rural and urban areas and in all socioeconomic and educational levels, and across all racial and cultural groups.

There is no rule governing the age range between a victim and a perpetrator. Generally, children are sexually abused by adults who are related to them or known by them or their families.

Sexual abuse is forced, tricked, or coerced sexual behavior between a young person and an older person.

Child sexual abuse may consist of any one of the following acts:

1. Nudity 2. Disrobing 3. Genital exposure 4. Inappropriate kissing or fondling 6. Masturbation 7. Oral-genital contact 8. Child pornography 9. Digital penetration 10. Vaginal or anal intercourse

Acquaintance perpetrators are the most common abusers, constituting approximately 70-90% of all reported perpetrators. In sexual abuse cases committed against females, approximately one third to one-half of all perpetrators were related to the victim. Only about one-tenth of the abusers were related to their male victims.

WHY REPORT CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN 72 HOURS

If the sexual assault has occurred within 72 hours of a physical examination, forensic evidence collection should be conducted.  A complete physical examination, including careful documentation of any lacerations, ecchymoses or petechiae, is critical. Physical examination of the oral cavity includes inspection of the hard and soft palate for bruising or petechiae, and inspection of the frenulum for any lacerations that can result from forced oral penetration.

Rape evidence collection kits are available in the emergency department of most hospitals. Evaluation of acute sexual assault may be conducted in an emergency department setting or, if available, at a children's advocacy center. In nonacute cases, the office of the family physician has the benefit of being a familiar location for the patient.  The physician should maintain a gentle and calm demeanor and be considerate of the apprehensive child. It is helpful to explain the examination beforehand to the patient and caretaker.

Medical problems include anogential trauma, bleeding, irritation or discharge, dysuria, frequent urinary tract infections, encopresis, enuresis (especially after continence has been acheived), pregnancy, diagnosis of a sexually transmitted disease (STD) and oral trauma.

Children may present with somatic complaints such as recurrent agdominal pain or frequent headaches resulting from the psychologic stress.  Sexual acting-out behavior is the most specific indicator of possible sexual abuse.

Child sexual abuse generally refers to sexual acts, sexually motivated behaviors, or sexual exploitation involving children. Child sexual abuse includes a wide range of behaviors, such as:

  • Oral, anal, or genital penile penetration
  • Anal or genital digital or other penetration
  • Genital contact with no intrusion
  • Fondling of a child's breasts or buttocks
  • Indecent exposure
  • Inadequate or inappropriate supervision of a child's voluntary sexual activities
  • Use of a child in prostitution, pornography, Internet crimes, or other sexually exploitative activities

Sexual abuse includes both touching offenses (fondling or sexual intercourse) and nontouching offenses (exposing a child to pornographic materials) and can involve varying degrees of violence and emotional trauma.

The most commonly reported cases involve incest, or sexual abuse occurring among family members, including those in biological families, adoptive families, and stepfamilies. Incest most often occurs within a father-daughter relationship.

Mother-son, father-son, and sibling-sibling incest also occurs. Sexual abuse is also sometimes committed by other relatives or caretakers.

Consider the possibility of sexual abuse when the child:

  • Has difficulty walking or sitting
  • Suddenly refuses to change for gym or to participate in physical activities
  • Reports nightmares or bedwetting
  • Experiences a sudden change in appetite
  • Demonstrates bizarre, sophisticated, or unusual sexual knowledge or behavior
  • Becomes pregnant or contracts a venereal disease, particularly if under age 14
  • Runs away
  • Reports sexual abuse by a parent or another adult caregiver

Consider the possibility of sexual abuse when the parent or other adult caregiver:

  • Is unduly protective of the child or severely limits the child's contact with other children, especially of the opposite sex
  • Is secretive and isolated
  • Is jealous or controlling with family members

The presence of a single sign does not prove child abuse is occurring in a family; however, when these signs appear repeatedly or in combination you should take a closer look at the situation and consider the possibility of child sexual abuse.

Hope it helps!

08/24 The Family Cult

Quote From: harleyrider

i watched the show today on cults.. it made me very mad that child protection service dose not step in and do something about it...expecially now that it is out in the open.. children are the innocent ones who suffer....kristi ditch your dad he is not worth it.... he knew it was all wrong...and he let them things happen to you....   no real father would let that happen .    fathers usually help and protect there children from monsters like that...  unless they are sick and perverted themselves....  i think he is still in the cult...so be careful... i don't trust him.. and if i was dr. phil on the show i would have a very hard time keeping myself from knocking his teeth out..  or worse...
THIS IS NINA KRISTI'S OLDEST SISTER AND I HAPPEN TO KNOW MY DAD IS A GREAT FATHER. NOONE CAN SAY THAT THEY COULD'VE DONE BETTER TO TRY AND GET THEIR KIDS BACK BUT THEIR KIDS. AND AS ONE OF HIS KIDS HE TRIED EVEN WITH FORCE. WHAT WE WERE WHEN WE WERE REUNITED WITH HIM IS NOT HIS FAULT BUT IS MY MOTHERS. I KNOW THAT HE DIDN'T NOT WANT TO RASIE US IN THE CULT AND TOOK STEPS TO RASIE US OUT OF THE CULT. WE WERE KIDNAPED.

Quote From: bastanz

Should Kristi or her sister or any other young person of this cult need a home to come to - I am here to help you Dr. Phil.  I live in Orlando and there are lots of jobs here.  A quiet neighborhood where these young people can adjust back into society by attending CFU or working.  Please contact me if you think one/two of them needs to start a new life.  My heart is open to helping them readjust.  There would be no pressure regarding any contracts/profit making or the like.  Just the warmth of a friendship and guidance for them.

THIS IS NINA THE OLDEST SISTER TO KRISTI AND JIM'S DAUGHTER. JUST WANTED TO SAY THANK U FOR THE OFFER TO HELP US. RIGHT NOW IM FINE BUT WISH KRISTI WOULD HEAL HER PREOMBLEM WITH MY  DAD I HAVE HEALED FROM THE PAST

THIS IS NINA JIM OLDEST DAUGHTER AND KRISTI'S SISTER MY FATHER DOES LOVE US.

and im very glad to hear you have healed and i relly do hope your little sister is able to heal as well, but all i can tell you is if you girls had been my daughters that cult never would have gotton thear sinful hands on you girls, it wouldnt have mattered to me what a court order said, if i knew what thear plans were for all you children as jim knew i would have taken you children and left that state, also i would have gone to the president of this country with my story and the f-b-i as well, even if it ment i was goin to jail, that would have been better for you children than to fall in the hands of a group of sinners such as that cult, if jim would have shown a bit more back bone with the courts order it is very possable the judge would have reversed his or hers desision! you girls would have not been placed with your mother by the court untill a through unvestagion into all the alligations were cheacked out by the court! as i know had they went ahead and placed you children with out cheacking jims story out they the court and state would have been responcible for you girls well being, and thears not a judge in this ciuntry willing to just take a foolish chance like that, all the abuse you and your sister had to indoure  could have been avoided!!! i am glad you girls got away with your lives, and just know your mothers day is coming when she can nolonger avoid ancering for her sins against you girls, and she wont be able to lie, god already knows the truth!!! god bless you and your little sister and i have to tell you your heart is in the right place it takes a very strong and honest person to be able to forgive what you went through and be able to put it behind you,

stay strong for you and your little sister, god bless  you both

When "religion" goes bad!!

Who is Warren Jeffs in reality? A freak? A bad person? And how did this cult of his come into existence? The answers to these questions shocked me a couple of months ago when I learned about  him on the internet ! His socalled cult was a part of the Mormon Church where in Utah they worshipped and practiced with the other non cultic Mormons in harmony while not being cultic themselves at the time.....before Utah became a state of the USA! The condition that Utah had to accept to be allowed to be a part of the USA was to put an end to polygamy within its' borders...a common practice within Mormonism. For the vast number of Mormons this created no major inconvenience in regards to the practice of their religion and maintaining their residency in Utah after it became a state of the USA. For other Mormons this was a condition they were not ready to accept. They consequently moved out of Utah to the designated area as mentionned in this program, and if not right away, later on adhered to the teachings of Warren Jeffs, THEIR Mormon Prophet. All Mormons have a prophet that they are obliged to obey. Unlike the average Mormon the mormons who were followers of Warren Jeffs became Fundamentalist Mormons who continued in the practice of polygamy.

At the time of my learning of Warren Jeffs he was on the FBI's most wanted list as a result of acts of pedophilia and the officiating of  marraiges of underaged children. I learned this soon after being told by a Mormon that no mormon prophet can lead his followers to do wrong! Like DUHH! I brought this information to the attention of the Mormon in question on a "flaming board" on a game site on the web only to have the post removed by administration who were convinced somehow that I wanted to speak on the topic of pedophelia instead of on the topic of this prophet who can't lead his followers to do wrong. (I have since left that site).

I was born into the Catholic religion as a child. I was told that I had to be a good catholic to get into heaven....whatever that was suppossed to have been. Ironically, as a result of being a Catholic and having the need to please God I became what is referred to as a Born Again Christian. Though originally a joyful transition it didn't take long for that belief system to make not much sense.....because I was lonely and as a result wound up committing the sin of idolatry....putting other Christians before God. On the whole it was not the overall joyful experience it was painted out to be. For the last several years I wanted to quit Christianity but was afraid to because I might "lose my salvation" and end up in Hell forever. After a brief stay in the psychiatric ward that I had to fight to obtain, I decided that no G(g)od of any religion organised or not was worthy of a return to such a ward.

Consequently, I'm no longer brainwashed and am surprised by the similarities between atheism and Fundamentalist Christianity. Yes, similarities! Athiests call themselves non believers in any god but often preach "political correctness" in the same way that pastors preach the Bible! And both have the equal capacity to brainwash those who are lonely or in some other way vulnerable!

I'm 51 yrs old and though I have had no real connection with church since 2002 I do get lonely at times and do fear about where I will end up after my physical death. If for no other reason being agnostic doesn't offer an answer to the question, where did humankind begin? Believers in the BIg BANG theory can't present a convincing argument for such being the origin of life.  So I do get nervous about the future sometimes! But I do experience more freedom today than when I was a Christian!
