Dr. Phil and his guests strike up heated conversations as they debate the latest hot topics. Should women give up their right to breastfeed their babies in public so other people don't feel uncomfortable? Will passing out condoms in schools prevent unwanted pregnancies or just send the message to kids that it's OK to have sex? And, is it acceptable for others to discipline your kids if they see them acting out in public, or should they just mind their own business? Dr. Phil weighs in on these controversial subjects. Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Adults eat off of plates, babies do not. That was easy.
yes, we do eat off of plates.. plates that are sitting on a table.. a table that we are sitting behind... which makes it less noticable for you to see that we are breastfeeding in the first place.. which means you would REALLY have to be paying CLOSE attention to notice us in the first place!

10/07 The Latest Debates

Quote From: petrosky

Listen, Shelly, there is much you do not understand or are not taking into consideration and I believe you may need some counseling to understand your real issue with this.  I have nursed three children and often in public.  I've also been in the company of many breastfeeding mothers.  I have NEVER seen a woman take off her top in order to nurse in public.  I'm confused about what people are seeing when they observe a woman nurse!  The nipple is covered by the baby's mouth and generally women have their shirts tucked around the baby's mouth area.  At the most, you may see a tiny bit of breast skin.  I believe you actually see more breast skin when a woman wears a low cut top or dress.  I think the problem lies in people feeling uncomfortable that a baby is sucking on a breast.  You would not admit it but I do believe you associated this on some level with a sexual act!   I think it is outrageous to ban a woman to the bathroom to nurse (in my case I would have to drag two other children into the bathroom to the side while I nurse the baby).  Again, your comment about rubbing the breast on the toilet seat was ridiculous!  Bathrooms are filled with germs, not just on the toilet seat.  There are many airborne bacteria in bathrooms (trust me, I contracted one and almost died from it last year).  I spend as little time in public bathrooms as possible!!!  I was also surprised by your comment about why she couldn't look away when someone nurses in public.  Trust me, I would never sit at a table with you and nurse.  If I am at another table, it is easy not to look.  I am only 5' 1" and weigh less than 120 lbs.  I take up very little space in a restaurant.  You can look at someone else!  What will you find offensive next?  Perhaps she wouldn't like to eat in the same restaurant as a handicapped child.  Maybe the handicapped should eat in the bathroom too?!?!?!  How about older citizens?  Sometimes table manners slip with age.  They too should not be allowed in Shelly's restaurant! MOST WOMEN WHO BREASTFEED IN PUBLIC DO NOT EXPOSE THEIR BREASTS!  Let's face the real issue, these people don't want to know that someone is sucking on a breast!  It's very sad to know people feel this way.

I read a few other posts from you and you indicate that bathrooms are not unsanitary!  Shelly...do you work for the CDC?  That's an interesting and very untrue statement.  I'd suggest you call the CDC and get better educated.  There are numerous airborne bacteria in public bathrooms.  I contracted one and I almost died.  The particular strain, clostridium difficile, is a spore forming bacteria, emitted in stool, that can only be killed by bleach...forget Lysol or any alcohol based cleaners, they doesn't work!  You should spend as little time in public bathrooms as possible.  I've even read that flushing spreads bacteria into the air...best recommendation is to run after flushing!!!!!!!!!!!

After watching the show, I was angry that the guest thinks that breastfeeding is not attractive and so on. I have 2 kids under the age of 2 and a 3 month old. I breastdeed my son in public and do not care what people think. I have a right to do that. If people dont like it. MOVE out of the way and DONT look. Whenever my son gets hungry, I will feed him, no matter where I am at.Breastfeeding isnt supposed to be attractive. I am simply supplying the best nutrients my baby needs to strive. Anybody who doesnt have children and who does not breastfeed just doesnt understand. Once you have children, everything changes, and will do anything for my children. I am always covered up, and thats why they make clothes for nursing mothers.I couldnt even imagine not breastfeeding my children.

Of course not. because you are the center of the universe, and everyone should bend to meet you and your childrens needs. MOVE OUT OF THE WAY- right? I think maybe we should all just start doing exactly as we please, common curtesy be damned.

I see that you said you are always covered up. Not everybody is that kind.

10/07 The Latest Debates

Quote From: phynemama

Hi, I am a first time mom and I breastfeed my son anywhere anytime infront of anyone for 6 months. There are ways that you can do this to were you do not expose your breast. It is natural. I do not think that women who breastfeed should be told to go to the bathroom or some place else, when your child is hungry then you need to feed him or her. Like she said on the show would you want to eat your sandwhich on the toliet? I do think that woman who are breastfeeding their child for over a year is OVER DOING IT A BIT.

ALL FOR BREASTFEEDING

Women who nurse for over a year are overdoing it? How do you figure? The World Health Organization urges that women breastfeed for a minimum of two years, and the American Academy of Pediatrics says that a year of breastfeeding is the absolute MINIMUM, and that after that nursing should continue "as long as mutually desired by mother and child". The average weaning age worldwide is about 4 years of age, and anthropologists have verified that humans "naturally" wean sometime between 2.5 and 7 years of age. The opposition to children nursing past infancy is purely a function of this particular culture, and it's just another way in which our culture is warped with regard to views on breastfeeding.

If you don't feel prepared to nurse your child past one year of age, that's your decision, and I commend you for being willing to give your son the benefit of breastfeeding for that long (it's more than a lot of moms are willing to do), but please don't harsh on those who make the informed decision to nurse longer than that...

Okay all. I have to wake up early to care for my angels. Breast feed proudly yet discretely as possible and don't let the few who cant even handle the thought of breast feeding get you down. These people need to find out why even a covered breast feeding mother offends them.

Wait a minute! You have been arguing with me all this time, and you AGREE WITH ME! *hits head on wall*

Sorry, didn't see that reply

Quote From: shellyee

Actually , I did answer this. Many times. Many, many times. Many, many , many, WAY TOO MANY TIMES.

If I never told you to GET in the bathroom, then why do keep saying the same thing? Because you can't admit that everythingelse I have said is true. It is like calling me ugly. Oh, I am a veggie by the way. No steak. And I answered the question about having to eat in the bathroom. I did answer it. Yet you all continue to pound and pound on it because it is all you have. Something I never even said. It's just pathetic now.

I am right. You all have no intentions of trying to show anyone any respect other than getting what YOU want. Compromise is just not an option. Your poor children.

But then again, this message board is so active that it's easy to miss a response.  By the way, I do b/f in public, but I always have a special apron made especially for this so that my baby and my upper body are both covered while I breastfeed.  My problem with your position honestly is not that you don't like women breastfeeding in public.  It's that when Dr. Phil asked you  what is so disturbing to you, you kept saying that it is not attractive.  There are a lot of unattractive things out there, but does that mean we have to ban them all?

As for your position on the bathroom issue, I know you didn't make the initial comment.  But you did respond to the initial comment and my understanding was that you had no problem with a mother going to the bathroom to b/f rather than do it in front of you.  That to me didn't sound very compassionate.  I have seen women b/f in public and although I do prefer that a woman covers herself up, I don't feel the urge to go beat on her if she doesn't.  I just look away.
